The Great Kabuki vs. Tracy Smothers

 

Despite his history as a fan favorite in PCW, it didn't take long for Tracy Smothers to get under the skin of a lot of people. First, he ran his former partner, Steve Armstrong, out of the territory. Then, he did the same to the much loved Brutus Beefcake. Tonight, Beefcake's some time colleague The Great Kabuki sought revenge against Smothers. To give the devil his due, Smothers did a good job of winding Kabuki up until he couldn't think straight. Smothers kept working in cheap shots and dirty tactics that raised the ire of Kabuki, but did it so deftly that the ref saw none of it, and it was Kabuki who took the blame when he tried to retaliate. Eventually, Kabuki had enough and let loose with the green mist, only for Smothers to duck out of the way and it was the ref who took the full brunt of it. Once he had recovered, the ref called for the DQ, which so enraged Kabuki that he nailed the ref with a thrust kick and followed it up with a piledriver. Once PCW security swarmed the ring and dragged off Kabuki, Commissioner Dutch Savage got on the arena PA and declared that Kabuki was now indefinitely suspended, effective immediately. While the crowd was shocked by this announcement, Smothers clearly found it quite hilarious, and was laughing hysterically as he left the ring.

 

Nick Busick & Bam Bam Bigelow vs. The Pacific Warlords (Jimmy Snuka & Don Muraco)

 

Several months ago, Bigelow was put out of action following a dastardly ambush by the Pacific Warlords. Since his comeback, he and Nick Busick has made considerable strides as a team but this would be his first proper chance to get revenge on Snuka and Muraco. The Warlords were certainly no pushovers, and gave the Army an hellacious fight. But Busick and Bigelow were at the top of their game, working like a well oiled machine. In the end, Busick hit the Spinebuster Slam on Snuka, then tagged out to Bigelow, who came off the top with the nuclear splash, giving the Army their most impressive win yet.

 

Chris Adams vs. Steven Regal

 

Once again, Adams would be facing one of the members of British Steel, and Regal made sure to have his partner, Robbie Brookside, in his corner to make sure Gary Hart didn't try any funny stuff. Despite all of this, Hart still kept trying to interfere in the match, at one point trying to toss in a set of brass knuckles to Adams. He was stopped by Brookside, who grabbed his wrist in one hand and Hart's collar in the other and started to shake down the horrified manager. The Hart Foundation rushed out to bail out their manager, and when Regal went to his partner's side to even things up, he ended up being counted out of the ring. As he left the ring with his men, Hart was apoplectic that someone had dared lay their hands on him.

 

Golden State Tag Team Title Match : Chavo & Hector Guerrero © vs. Badd Company

 

These two teams have had some classic matches for the Golden State Tag Titles, and while Badd Company had not yet pulled out the victory, it seemed like they were getting steadily closer to winning the gold. This match was another classic, where the Guerreros did everything they could to hold back Tanaka and Diamond and the challengers pulling out all the stops. It seemed like they finally pulled it off when Tanaka nailed Chavo with a cartwheel kick that sent him to the mat. But before Tanaka could make the cover, the bell rang, signaling a 20 minute time limit draw. Badd Company may have been disappointed by the result, but they had certainly proved themselves to the champs and the fans, and are clearly set for big things in 1986.

 

Loser Leaves Town Match : The Brigade (Mike Rotunda, Barry Windham, & Al Perez) vs. The Freebirds (Terry Gordy, Michael Hayes, & Buddy Jack Roberts)

 

This is it. The final showdown. Over a year ago, the Freebirds made their PCW debut with a brutal sneak attack on the members of the Brigade. Since then, the men from Badstreet have run rampage on PCW, including a lengthy reign by Terry Gordy as Pacific Heavyweight champ, while the fortunes of the Brigade took a bit of a tumble. But lately, the Brigade have had a resurgence, getting revenge on several people who had crossed them, and saw the Freebirds as the last bit of old business to settle before moving on to 1986. They were so determined to settle things for good with the Freebirds, they made a huge gamble, putting their own PCW careers on the line for the chance to get their ultimate revenge. Well, the Freebirds are at their most dangerous when they are cornered, and what followed was a titanic battle for the ages, with a lot of near falls that kept the fans on the edge of their seats. Towards the end, it seemed like it might be all for naught, as Hayes looked set to finish Rotunda off with a running bulldog headlock.  But Windham, who was slugging it out with Gordy, broke loose and nailed Hayes with a lariat. Rotunda hoisted Hayes across his shoulders and, while Windham and Perez held back Gordy and Roberts, executed a Samoan Drop to score the pinfall. The Brigade had pulled off the seemingly impossible feat of running off the Freebirds to cap off an epic year for them. It looks like, in 1986, the Brigade truly will break out.

 

Pacific Heavyweight Title Match : Eddie Gilbert © vs. Grizzly Boone

 

In his brief time as champion, Gilbert has had to defend his title against several much bigger opponents. Few of them, however, could be said to be as scary as Grizzly Boone, who has taken several tough wrestlers out of action since his arrival in PCW. While Gilbert was not intimidated , he seemed at a loss to figure out just what to do against the huge mountain man. He tried to stick and move against Boone, but nothing he did seemed to make a dent in the Grizzly. When Boone was able to get his hands on Gilbert, he certainly made him pay the price with some devastating slams and drops. It is a credit to the resilience of Gilbert that he was still able to kick out, but Boone was able to make him pay a heavy toll. Gilbert was able to eventually take advantage of Boone's frustration at his inability to put him away, drawing him into making more risky moves and then rolling out of the way, causing the challenger to crash hard into the match. Eventually, the action spilled to the outside, where Boone had Gilbert up against the corner post for an avalanche, but Gilbert dove out of the way, and Boone went chest first into the corner. Gilbert then started peppering the staggered Boone with lefts and rights before coming off the ring apron with a forearm that put him down to the ground. Gilbert was able to make it back into the ring before the count of ten, getting the win by countout. A narrow victory, but Gilbert has withstood his sternest test yet.

Smothers is quickly establishing himself as a serious threat. Tonight he sends Beefcake packing. Beefcake really found himself in Pacific. 

Cameron is living up to his "Lethal" name. With his new attitude, he's going to be hard to stop. 

Thundercats are rolling but I'm very curious on who this new mystery team is coming in to face them. 

I don't think Adams should be messing with British Steel while he's preparing for a title shot with Gilbert. However, he does have the Hart Foundation watching his back. 

Just when you think Rose is on his last legs, he issues a challenge with a mystery partner in mind. Crazy Gang better not take this lightly.

LA is a special place for Pacific. The fans here always get some pretty spectacular cards and tonight was no different. 

As much as Smothers has become a hated heel, it's Kabuki that pulls out some nasty heel tactics on the Ref, even getting himself suspended. I cracked up when Smothers thought this whole thing was laughable. Clever way in keeping Smothers heat. 

Yea I would call Busick and Bigelow's win over the Pacific Warlords impressive. These powerhouses will be the team to watch in 86. 

I thought Adams might be getting in over his head but he's taking advantage of all the chaos and is getting the better of British Steel. 

Guerreros and Badd Co. give us another classic. I love these encounters. Badd Co. are making a great chase. Will they have the Guerreros number one night? 

Oh man Brigade pull off a big win over the Freebirds and send them packing. This is a pretty huge deal and gives the Brigade massive credibility as a unit. I will say, Gordy's title run was one of my favorites in the game. 

Gilbert has proven to be a fighting champion by taking on all comers. Tonight he faces the monster Boone. Boone gave Gilbert a scare but Gilbert manages to pull out the c.o. win. After this showing, I would think Boone will get a rematch down the road.

Tom Zenk vs. Lanny Poffo

 

Zenk won with a top rope missile dropkick

 

Pat Tanaka vs. Hector Guerrero

 

Hector ducked under a roundhouse kick and countered with a low blow, then followed up with a Butterfly Suplex to get the win

 

Paul Diamond vs. Chavo Guerrero

 

Chavo whipped Diamond hard into the corner, but Diamond swiftly went up to the top rope and came back reverse bodypress to score the pinfall

 

Pacific Tag Team Title Match : Cabin Fever (Grizzly Boone & Manny Fernandez) © vs. The Thundercats (Too Cold Scorpio & Norman Smiley)

 

The Thundercats did their best to use their speed and agility to stay out of the clutches of the big moves on Cabin Fever. The match ended with all four men slugging it out on the outside, leading to a double countout finish.

 

California Title Match : Al Perez © vs. Mando Guerrero

 

A tightly contested title match that ended when Mando attempted a German Suplex, but Perez blocked it and countered with a Small Package to get the three count.

 

Pacific Television Title Match : Bob Orton © vs. Leo Burke

 

An intense fight between two of the toughest men in PCW. Burke looked like he was about to become the new TV champ when he locked Orton in the Sleeper Hold, but Orton was able to make it to the ropes and force the break. Orton battled back and was ultimately able to nail Burke with a lariat to successfully defend his title.

With the last shows of the year wrapped up, Pacific Coast Wrestling is excited to announce more details of the up coming New Years Day Special from Vancouver :

* as already announced, Eddie Gilbert will be defending the Pacific Heavyweight Title against Bret "The Hit Man" Hart, and The Thundercats (Too Cold Scorpio & Norman Smiley) with take on a mystery tag team

I liked the Guerreros working singles matches. Especially Mando going after the CA title. Him and Perez can go. 

Orton and Burke are two guys that seem would have great in ring chemistry. Looks like they gave the fans in Santa Barbara a solid main event. 

Looking forward to the New Year's special. Looks like a lot of new faces are coming in. The tag team division is going to explode in Pacific. Can't wait to see all these new teams in action. 

I'm sure Gilbert and Bret are going to put on a classic.

Pacific Wrestling Showcase New Years Day Special from the Pacific Coliseum, Vancouver, on ESPN / TSN, January 1^st

 

The Snowbirds (Owen Hart, Brian Pillman & Biff Wellington) vs. Darnell Hamilton, Caleb Reynolds & Peter Baggenstos

 

The New Years Day special kicks off with the first of several debuts, and few incoming wrestlers have generated as much buzz as this exciting trio of young wrestlers out of Canada. Wellington showed great technical expertise as he dominated Hamilton on mat before executing a series of quick suplexes. Pillman, a handsome former football player originally from Cincinnati, got a lot of appreciative looks from the ladies in the audience but impressed even more with his deft high flying moves, including a springboard dropkick on Baggenstos. But it was Owen Hart, youngest son of the legendary Hart Family of Calgary, who impressed the most. He dazzled the fans both on the mat and in the air, taking Reynolds down for the count with a lightning quick reverse flying body press. These young superstars have certainly started off 1986 for PCW with a bang.

 

Paul Diamond vs. Chris Adams

 

While Diamond was joined by both his manager, Missy Hyatt, and his Badd Company partner Pat Tanaka. Adams, however, was accompanied not just by his manager, Gary Hart, but by a tall, powerful man with long dark hair and a beard, wearing a black Karate gi. Hart got on the ring and declared that he was sick and tired of wrestlers thinking they could lay their hands on him, a manager, and he should charge them all with felony assault. Instead, he has hired a bodyguard to watch his back : the American Ninja, Brian Adams! The presence of Adams may have intimidated most people, but it certainly didn't stop Missy from letting loose with a stream of verbal insults and invective, which Hart was more than ready to respond with in kind. Eventually, the American Ninja walked over towards her side of the ring, looming menacingly , which did quiet Missy down somewhat. Regardless, Chris Adams and Paul Diamond had an extremely tight bout where both had the advantage at different times. The end came when Diamond went for a sunset flip, but Adams blocked it by getting a hold of the ropes, then maintaining his grip on the ropes to get a leveraged pinfall. A dirty win, but a win none the less, and one that shows Adams determination to challenge for the Pacific Heavyweight Title, held by Missy's man Eddie Gilbert.

 

Chris Candido vs. Paul Wachter

 

The next debut tonight was from Candido, a very young and fit man from the East Coast. Candido was the grandson of retired WWF wrestler "Popeye" Richards and had a sour disposition that seemed to take offense at pretty much everything his opponent, the ref and the fans did. Despite his poor behaviour, Candido had considerable wrestling skills, making short work of Wachter before finishing him off with a top rope flying legdrop. Candido might just have a great career ahead of him in PCW, if he can only learn to improve his attitude.

 

The Brigade (Tom Zenk & ?? ??) vs. The Hollywood Knights (Gary Young &

?? ??)

 

"Gorgeous" Gary Young has been through a lot in his short time in PCW. Having lost both of his Vice Squad teammates, he has decided to start anew with a brand new team, the Hollywood Knights. Coming out to "Hollywood Nights" by Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band , his partner was Dan Severn, a rough and rugged Michigan native with a suave mustache and a no-nonsense disposition that contrasted sharply with Young's braggadocious manner. Severn brought with him a truly impressive set of credentials, including an extensive amateur and collegiate background and the prestige of having been an alternate for the 1984 American Olympic wrestling team. Next out was Zenk who was joined by all of his colleagues from the Brigade : Mike Rotunda, Barry Windham and Al Perez. Rotunda got on the microphone and said that he wanted to thank all of the fans for sticking with them through thick and thin. The Brigade had taken care of old business and were ready to move into 1986 with a clean slate. This is going to be the year that that the Brigade breaks out, and to that end, he was proud and happy to welcome a new member to the Brigade. A world class athlete, a former Florida Seminole and pro football player, 2 time All American and Orange Bowl star …. Ron Simmons! The crowd exploded in cheers as the powerfully built Simmons charged out to the ring, giving high fives to the fans all the way. When the match finally got going, both newcomers made their mark. Severn showed an easy confidence, getting the advantage over Zenk in several lockups and quick mastery when the action went to the mat. Simmons, on the other hand, showed truly explosive power, bowling over Young with devastating tackles and eventually scoring the victory when he caught him off the ropes with a crushing powerslam. While it was the Brigade that won the day, both teams had established considerable credibility.

 

The Gold Exchange (Shane Douglas & Todd Morton) vs. Patrick Bolton & Alan Ball

 

The next tag team to make their debut tonight were the Gold Exchange, two good looking young men in matching gold trunks. Morton is the brother of former PCW Tag Team champion Ricky Morton, while Douglas is a trainee of Dominic De Nucci out of Pittsburgh. While both men certainly had the attention of female fans, these were no shallow pretty boys. They showed incredible speed and coordination, dazzling the crowd with their rapid fire tags and combination moves. They were able to finish off Bolton with a move they called the Gold Rush, where Morton used a schoolboy trip to assist Douglas hitting a running cross body press. It looks like the tag team action in PCW is set to kick into a whole new level in 1986.

 

Nick Busick vs. Waylon Mercy

 

When he was allied with Jake Roberts and Nord the Barbarian, Mercy was a frequent thorn in the side of the Three Man Army. Now that Roberts and Nord have been run out of PCW, Waylon Mercy finds himself on the wrong side of the numbers for a change. Busick was joined at ringside by his colleague Bam Bam Bigelow, and while the Beast From The East never tried to interfere in the match, Mercy kept losing his focus and issuing warnings to Bigelow not to get involved.  He should have paid closer attention to Busick, who was able to catch him with a Spinebuster Slam and get the three count. After the match, Mercy was enraged at what he perceived as unfair treatment, and got on the ringside mic to challenge Busick and Bigelow to face him and a partner the next night in Victoria, a challenge which they accepted.

 

The Crazy Gang (Bob Orton, Manny Fernandez & Grizzly Boone) vs. Buddy Rose, Ed Wiskowski & ?? ??

 

For the last while, the Crazy Gang have been running roughshod over Pacific Coast Wrestling, taking titles and putting their competition out of action. In spite of suffering some considerable losses, Buddy Rose and his Playboy Club have refused to give up and have promised to get payback tonight with their mystery partner. Bob Orton and his crew came out confident, seemingly unconcerned by any threat that their unnamed opponent could pose to them. That all changed, though, when the arena PA started playing "Working Man" by Rush and Rose and Wiskowski came out with their partner … "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan! Duggan came out loaded for bear, laying out the members of the Crazy Gang with big lefts and rights and the pride of Glens Falls immediately had all of the fans behind him. What followed was not so much a match as a bar brawl with all 6 men being in the ring pretty much at all times. The ref eventually gave up all hope of trying to gain control and declared the match a no contest, but both sides kept slugging it out long afterwards until Commissioner Dutch Savage came out and threatened suspensions all round if both sides didn't return to their respective locker rooms, to which they begrudgingly complied.

 

The Wild Bulls (Ed & Rick Gantner) vs. Jacob Derwin & Brendan Shapiro

 

This evening has seen the debut of several new tag teams, but none of them have been quite like the Wild Bulls. The Gantner Brothers towered over their opposition, initially intimidating them and eventually terrorizing them. Ed Gantner was an extremely powerful and muscular individual who flattened Shapiro with lariats and devastating power moves. His older brother, Rick, was a raw boned slugger who battered Derwin with jarring haymakers before polishing him off with the Hangman's Drop (two handed suspended chokeslam). The other teams in the PCW tag division had best keep an eye out for this devastating new combo.

 

The Thundercats (Too Cold Scorpio & Norman Smiley) vs. ?? ??

 

Possibly the hottest topic of discussion among the Pacific Coast fans was the identity of the mystery team that would face the Thundercats. Scorpio and Smiley came out first, looking ready but still wary. Then the arena PA started playing "Chase" by Giorgio Moroder and their opponents revealed themselves … the Midnight Express! Dennis Condrey and Bobby Eaton, fresh off a very successful run in the NWA, came out accompanied by their manager, Jim Cornette, and his bodyguard, Big Bubba Rogers, and were looking incredibly smug and cocksure. If they thought that the Thundercats would be pushovers, they were sorely mistaken, as Smiley and Scorpio were more than ready to go toe to toe with Cornette's men. Condrey and Eaton kept going back to their repertoire of double teams and underhanded tactics to wear down the PCW favorites, but every time you thought the Thundercats were down for the count, they would come back with a flurry of offense and be back in the game. Jim Cornette tried to tip the balance in his team's favour by tossing in his trademark tennis racket, but it was intercepted by Scorpio, who started chasing Cornette around the ring. Unfortunately, this provided sufficient distraction that Big Bubba Rogers was able to sneak into the ring, out of the sight of the ref, and hit a crushing Bubba Slam on Smiley. Eaton swiftly went up top for the Alabama Jam and that was it. A heartbreaking loss for the Thundercats, but Scorpio immediately challenged the Express and Bubba to a 6 man tag match against all 3 members of the Thundercats, and the match was set for the next night in Victoria.

 

Pacific Heavyweight Title Match : Eddie Gilbert © vs. Bret Hart

 

The evening culminated in this, the big main event. Gilbert and Hart are no strangers to each other, having faced each other in tag matches, but this would be the first time where the Pacific Heavyweight Title was on the line. Hart came out with his manager, Gary Hart, as well as Brian Adams, but no other members of Gary Hart International were in tow. The champion was accompanied by his manager, Missy Hyatt, and while the presence of the American Ninja may have discouraged her usual stream of invective towards Gary Hart (in stark contrast to her behaviour earlier in the evening) , her look of sheer hatred spoke volumes. While the Cold War went on between the managers, the war between the Champion and Challenger blazed hot. In contrast to his normally methodical approach, Bret Hart came straight out of the blocks the moment the bell rang. The two opponents were very evenly matched, matching each other hold for hold when they chose to engage in a technical matchup, but both were just as ready to throw down and go to fist city when they found themselves at a stalemate. The longer the match went on, the intensity of the Hit Man's attack increased, until he finally tried to put Gilbert away with a Piledriver. He couldn't quite get him up for it, and Gilbert was able to counter with a small package. This got a count of two, but when they returned to their feet, Gilbert was able to nail Hart with a forearm that staggered the challenger. He followed up with another forearm, and a third, before hitting his own Piledriver on the Hit Man. Gilbert did not go for the cover, but instead used the last of his strength to drag Hart to his feet and hit one more Pildriver and finally get the three count. A hard fought victory, and Missy Hyatt was jubilant as her exhausted man joined her at ringside. Frank Bonnema came over for a ringside post-match interview.

 

Bonnema : An amazing win over Bret Hart, Eddie Gilbert, you must be very proud of yourself.

 

Gilbert : (clearly exhausted) I am, Frank Bonnema. Bret Hart may work for that creep, Gary Hart, but he gave me one of the toughest fights of my life. I don't like the Hit Man, but now , I definitely respect him. That said, I'm looking to the future. 1986 is a new year, and I've got a lot of new challenges ahead of me. Chris Adams is gunning for my title, and I know he's not going to be a pushover. There's a lot of new talent in Pacific Coast Wrestling, and they are all going to want a shot at the champ. Well, the champ doesn't duck anyone, and no matter who the challenger is, I am going to be ready …

 

The interview is interrupted  by the arrival of a young man at ringside.  Missy Hyatt looked annoyed, but Eddie Gilbert looked more curious than anything.

 

Young Man : Mister Gilbert, I am so sorry to intrude. I am new to PCW and just getting started as a wrestler. My brother said I should look you up the first chance I got, because he said you might be able to help me find my way in Pacific Coast Wrestling.

 

Missy Hyatt : Oh, sweetie, I know you mean well, but that's just not the way things are done. Eddie is the Pacific Heavyweight Champion. He really don't have time to help out new wrestlers, no matter how well intentioned they might be. I'm sorry, but it's just not possible.

 

The young man is clearly disappointed and about to walk away, but Gilbert looks thoughtful and beckons him back.

 

Gilbert : Hold on a second, kid. You said your brother said you should look me up. Who is your brother?

 

Young Man : Ricky Steamboat.

 

A gasp goes up from Missy Hyatt and the fans, but Eddie Gilbert simply nods.

 

Gilbert : Of course. Ricky was always talking about his younger brother, Vic. He kept saying that you always wanted to be a pro wrestler, and how proud of you he was. Your bother is one of the best men I have ever known. I wouldn't be the Heavyweight Champ if he hadn't been a man of honour and made sure that I got the title shot that he promised me. I owe him a considerable debt. Now Missy is right, as champion I don't really have time to help you out. But there is a space in our organization, with Brutus having left. And I know someone who can help you out … one of the people I trust the most in the world. Are you with me, Vic? (offering his hand)

 

Vic Steamboat : (shaking his hand) Thank you, Mister Gilbert , I won't let you down.

 

The audience cheers as the show cuts to the closing credits.

WOW! A lot going on as Pacific heads into the new year. 

The young and exciting Snowbirds have arrived and are looking to make a name for themselves. They're off to a good start. 

Gary Hart brings in a very menacing bodyguard. His presence is known as he manages to quiet Missy down a bit LOL. While all that is going on, Adams chalks up another win as his road to a title shot continues. 

Candido arrives along with a bad attitude. 

Young brings in Severn and Zenk counters with Simmons. You talk about two of the toughest. Brigade come out on top and it looks like 1986 will be their year.

Another exciting debut as the youthful Gold Exchange excite the fans. 

Impressive win for Busick as he puts Waylon down. I can't imagine who Waylon will get as a partner. 

Hacksaw Duggan with the Playboy Club! I never thought I would see that LOL. However, if you're going to get crazy with the Crazy Gang, then you can't find a better partner than good ol Hacksaw Jim Duggan. 

Good grief, the Wild Bulls come in with impact. They could make some waves here. 

Awesome way to debut one of the top rated heel teams in wrestling by having them come in and beat a hot young babyface team! Cornette, Bubba and the Midnight's have arrived! With all the amazing teams here, they are going to have their hands full. This is going to be a lot of fun to watch. 

After all that, we get a Gilbert/Hart classic. Hart puts up a serious challenge and it takes Gilbert a lot to put him away. Great match! 

Then there's more, as yet another newcomer arrives. Vic Steamboat is here. Very interested in seeing how he does here. Pacific is a good place for him. 

Pacific defiantly has a new, fresh and exciting look.

The Snowbirds (Brian Pillman, Owen Hart & Biff Wellington) vs. Mando, Chavo & Hector Guerrero

 

Initially, the Guerreros didn't seem to be taking the young Snowbirds seriously, shown in their dismissive manner in their initial exchanges with the team. Big mistake, as the men out of Calgary were set to make their mark in PCW and swiftly got the better of the Guerreros with their speed and athleticism. The brothers tried to regain control of the match with dirty tactics, but to no avail. Owen Hart had been trained well by his father, wrestling legend Stu Hart, and was able to spot and counter almost every cheap shot the Guerreros sent their way. The end result was that both trios were still going at it when the bell rang, signaling a 15 minute time limit draw.

 

Nick Busick & Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Waylon Mercy & ?? ??

 

Bigelow and Busick came out to the sound of "Ramrod" by Bruce Springsteen and high fived the fans on the way to the ring, but were still somewhat reserved, being wary of what might come. They were deep in conversation , clearly concerned just who Mercy's mystery partner might be, but even they couldn't have been prepared for just who came out to the ring … Stan "The Lariat" Hansen!!! The Mad Man From Borger came charging out with Mercy and they immediately threw down with the two members of the Three Man Army. Busick and Bigelow were battle hardened by their recent feuds and were certainly no pushovers, but Hansen was extremely difficult to corral. The Army put in a valiant effort, but Hansen proved too much to handle, and when he flattened Busick with a mighty lariat, it was all over. Mercy may have lost his old allies, but he has gained a dangerous new one in the crazy Texan.

 

Badd Company vs. The Hollywood Knights (Gary Young & Dan Severn)

 

For a brand new pairing, the Hollywood Knights certainly seem to be gelling quickly, giving a fierce challenge to the more experienced Badd Company. Severn was particularly impressive, tossing Tanaka around like a ragdoll with some devastating suplexes and Judo throws. Badd Company did ultimately prevail when Diamond caught Young out of the corner with a Sunset Flip, but the Hollywood Knights certainly made their mark.

 

The Thundercats (Too Cold Scorpio, Norman Smiley & Larry Cameron) vs. The Midnight Express & Big Bubba Rogers

 

It was no surprise that Jim Cornette and his men were all confidence as they came out, laughing and oblivious to the jeers of the crowd. What was surprising was the entrance of the Thundercats, with Cameron clearly trailing slowly behind his two partners. While Scorpio and Smiley were focused on the match ahead, Cameron seemed bored and disinterested as he lackadaisically made his way to the ring. Smiley and Scorpio did their best to hold up their end , but Cameron was entirely disinclined to give his partners any support whatsoever. This reached a climax when a battered Scorpio reached out to him for the tag, and Cameron looked at him, shrugged … and jumped off the ring apron, walking back to the locker room! Having been abandoned by their most powerful member, it didn't take long for the Thundercats to fall apart. Once Rogers nailed Scorpio with the Bubba Slam, it was all academic and the ref called the match for the Midnight Express. A sad outcome for the popular Thundercats.

 

Mike Rotunda & Barry Windham vs. The Dog Pound (Brian Knobbs & Rick Steiner)

 

The newly resurgent Brigade took on one of the toughest teams in PCW in a hard hitting battle where Windham was finally able to put down Steiner with a running Bulldog Headlock.

 

Pacific Tag Team Title Match : Cabin Fever (Grizzly Boone & Manny Fernandez) vs. Buddy Rose & Jim Duggan

 

Another crazy match that ended in DQ when Boone hit an Avalanche on the ref. After the match, Cabin Fever tried to gang up on Rose, but Duggan came in swinging his 2x4 and ran them off.

 

Eddie Gilbert & ?? ?? & ?? ?? vs. Chris Adams & The Hart Foundation

 

The champion's first partner was no big surprise to those who watched the New Years Day special : Vic Steamboat. Gilbert then announced his second partner, the man he trusted to watch both his back and that of his new friend … his younger brother, Doug Gilbert! The new trio then too the fight to Gary Hart's men. The new members of the team made a strong impression in the match, showing the trademark Steamboat skill and Gilbert toughness. But it would be the Heavyweight Champion who would get the pin when he countered an attempted running tackle from Jim Neidhart into a Hot Shot. For a moment, Missy Hyatt's men were triumphant. But  then, the arena lights went out. When they went back on, a black clad figure was at ringside, holding onto a clearly terrified Missy. It was the Great Muta! He grabbed her by the back of the head, them sprayed her face with the Green Mist! While Steamboat and the Gilbert Brothers rushed over to attend to their hysterical manager, Gary Hart's men scuttled away, cackling as they did so. Eddie Gilbert and his partners may have won the match, but they were now facing a new and even more dangerous threat.

Snowbirds holding the Guerreros to a draw is a pretty big deal. Snowbirds just got the fans respect.  

I knew Waylon needed a tough partner to contend with Busick and Bigelow, but he went way beyond that and got STAN HANSEN! Stan comes in with a bang! Stan is going to be awesome to watch here. 

Badd Co. racks up another win but the Hollywood Knights prove that they're a tough team. 

Brigade keeps up their winning ways and should be in the title picture soon. 

You mess with Duggan you get the 2x4! Buddy Rose is a very smart man. 

Eddie calls in family as brother Doug shows up. Doug aligning with Vic Steamboat gives Eddie some solid back up. I thought that was a big moment but it gets overshadowed by a new evil Muta. Muta does the unthinkable and sprays Missy! Eddie is going to go crazy. However, he's going to have to stay focused because now he has both Adams and Muta coming after him. I know you will get a lot out of Hot Stuff Inc. vs Gary Hart's stable. So many angles can come out of this.

The Wild Bulls won when Ed Gantner pinned Todd Morton after a big running legdrop

 

Vic Steamboat vs. Chris Candido

 

Vic Steamboat had his first PCW singles match with the arrogant young Candido. The result was a tight contest that Steamboat won with a flying cross body press.

 

Biff Wellington vs. Brian Adams

 

Wellington put up a good fight against Gary Hart's towering bodyguard, but in the end he was overpowered with a spinning backbreaker

 

Ron Simmons vs. Gary Young

 

Ron Simmons won with a flying shoulder tackle

 

Leo Burke vs. Dan Severn

 

An intense technical showdown where Severn was able to pin Burke with an Oklahoma Roll

 

2/3 Falls Match : British Steel (Steven Regal & Robbie Brookside) vs. The Hart Foundation

 

1st Fall : The Harts ambushed British Steel from the jump and hit the Hart Attack to get the first pinfall

2^nd Fall : British Steel battled back and evened the score when Brookside countered a clothesline by Bret Hart with a crucifix and get the one two three

3^rd Fall : Bret Hart snuck in a blind tag to the Anvil and Neidhart blindsided Regal with a running forearm to win the match

 

California Title Match : Al Perez © vs. Tracy Smothers

 

Smothers tried to steal the win with a rollup assisted by grabbing Perez's trunks, but Perez was able to reverse it and keep Smothers' shoulders to the mat for the three count.

Whenever I read yor shows, I always feel like everyone is a the right place at the right time on your cards. Major props for you in doing so. Seems like Al Perez has ascended the ladder of your territory since the last time I was here. Great match also between British Steel and the Hart Foundation!

Vic Steamboat is off to a good start.

I think Severn got the biggest win of the night, taking down tough veteran Burke.

Even though the Hart Foundation won the overall match, British Steel deserves some credit for scoring a fall. 

Perez vs. Smothers was a match I was looking forward to. Perez retains tonight but I'm hoping to see these guys work a program.

Pacific Wrestling Showcase from the Portland Sports Arena, Portland , on ESPN / TSN ,

 

The Snowbirds (Owen Hart, Brian Pillman & Biff Wellington) vs. Mando, Chavo & Hector Guerrero

 

The Snowbirds came out to a huge welcome from the crowd. It certainly didn't take long for these young men from Calgary (in one case, by way of Cincinnati ) to become big fan favorites. Their combination of good looks and dazzling talent generated immediate buzz. The Guerreros certainly changed their attitude to the team in the week since their match with them. Last week, the brothers were quite dismissive of the Snowbirds, but after their match on Pacific Super Cards where they went to a time limit draw, they are clearly considering them a threat and came out much more aggressively.  For a bit, the veteran brothers dominated the younger teams, and it looked like the Snowbirds' earlier success might have been a fluke. But little by little, they started to come back, their natural athleticism pairing well with a determination to prove themselves. This made the Guerreros even angrier, but their tempers led them to start making more mistakes , and the Snowbirds eagerly took advantage. This culminated in Chavo whipping Owen into the corner, only for Owen to quickly ascend the turnbuckles and come off with a flying reverse body press. One … two … THREE!!! The Snowbirds just beat the Guerreros, and by pinning one half of the Golden State Tag Team champs, no less. The Guerreros were livid but the fans exploded in applause for the impressive victory. Clearly, the Snowbirds are a trio to watch out for.

 

Chris Candido vs. Pat Cusack

 

Much like the Snowbirds, Candido is a in impressive young newcomer looking to make his mark in PCW. Unlike the fan favorites, however, he distinctly lacks their positive energy, instead being possessed of a sour petulance that rubs everyone the wrong way. Despite all of that, there is no denying his considerable athletic gifts as he completely owned Cusack from beginning to end, polishing him off with a spectacular top rope sunset flip. A big win for the youngster from New Jersey. Hopefully he will find the right guidance to hone his talents and smooth off his rough edges.

 

The Gold Exchange (Shane Douglas & Todd Morton) vs. The Wild Bulls (Ed & Rick Gantner)

 

Oh , dear. Things started innocuously , with Douglas and Morton high fiving the fans on the way to the ring. But then, "Flirting With Disaster" by Molly Hatchet blared over the arena PA, and the Gantner Brothers stormed the ring. Immediately tossing Douglas from the ring, the Wild Bulls went to town on poor Todd Morton, tossing him from pillar to post with big power moves and double teams. Morton took a bad fall from one of them early on and was clearly hurt throughout the match, but that was just like, well, waving a reg flag in front of a bull. Ed Gantner showed no mercy, whipping him into the ropes before flattening him with the Bull Hammer (running forearm smash to the face). Even this was not enough for the Wild Bulls, and older brother Rick tagged himself in and destroyed Morton with not one but two Hangman's Drops (two handed suspended chokeslam) before finally putting his foot on his chest to get the three count. The carnage didn't stop there, as they pounded him with elbow and leg drops until the officials ordered them from the ring. Morton couldn't get up under his own power and had to be taken out on a stretcher. The other teams in PCW have to be concerned about this devastating pairing of the Gantner Brothers.

 

Iron & Steel vs. James Lim & Bradley Kleihege

 

When "Lethal" Larry Cameron walked out on the rest of the Thundercats last week, abandoning them to their fate at the hands of the Midnight Express, people were wondering just what had gotten into the powerful former football player. This is perhaps cleared up this week by the debut of a new tag team, Iron & Steel, a duo consisting of Cameron and none other than "Mr. USA" himself, Tony Atlas. The muscular duo towered over Lim and Kleihege and proceeded to dismantle their opponents, tossing them about the ring with ease before atlas forced Kleihege to give up to a Full Nelson. Cameron may have moved up the tag ranks with his switch to a new partner, but he certainly isn't winning points with the fans for loyalty.

 

The Thundercats (Too Cold Scorpio & Norman Smiley) vs. The Hollywood Knights (Gary Young & Dan Severn)

 

Speaking of the Thundercats, Scorpio and Smiley seem to have lost a lot of focus and momentum since Cameron's betrayal. Case in point, tonight's match, where they just couldn't get things in gear against the new team of Young and Severn. It got to the point where Young started randomly working in cheap shots against Scorpio, not for any advantage but just to amuse himself. Occasionally, the Thundercats would rally, but it would be swiftly shut down by the Knights. Severn, in particular, showed a cool ruthlessness as he crushed Scorpio with a pair of backdrop suplexes before forcing him to give up to a Body Scissors Sleeper. A decisive victory for the Hollywood Knights. Hopefully, the Thundercats can come back from this and get back on track.

 

Jim Duggan vs. Manny Fernandez

 

The seemingly unstoppable campaign of terror from the Crazy Gang hit a major stumbling block with the arrival of "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan and his alliance with the members of the Playboy Club. Even with Fernandez having Grizzly Boone and Bob Orton in his corner didn't intimidate Duggan, who had Buddy Rose and Ed Wiskowski there to back him up.  The Ragin' Bull was pretty used to having his way in the match, but the Pride of Glens Falls was having none of it, matching Fernandez shot for shot and haymaker for haymaker. Fernandez tried to goad Rose and Wiskowski into interfering, luring them into a brawl with the rest of the Crazy Gang, but should have kept his attention on Duggan, who blindsided him with a running spear and got the easy three count. It looks like the tide in the war between the Crazy Gang and the Playboy Club might just have turned in the direction of Rose and his compatriots.

The Guerreros are having a tough time with the Snowbirds. Can the Snowbirds carry this momentum when the titles are on the line? 

I like Candido's character here. So fitting. 

Oh man will anybody be able to stop the Wild Bulls? Morton gets the stretcher and this might only be the beginning of the Bulls path of destruction. 

Cameron and Atlas as a team? YES! I love this pairing! These two powerhouses are going to make waves in Pacific. 

Hollywood Knights score a big upset over the Thundercats. Thundercats might need to take some time and regroup. 

Playboy Club hit the jackpot with Duggan.  Duggan proves his worth with a devastating win over Manny.

Ed pinned Scorpio after nailing him with the Bull Hammer (Running Forearm Smash to the face)

 

British Steel (Steven Regal & Robbie Brookside) vs. The Hart Foundation

 

Regal had Hart trapped in the Regal Stretch (modified STF) when Neidhart rushed in to try to break it up. The ref tried to intercept him, and was rewarded for his efforts with a punch to the face, giving the match to British Steel by DQ

 

Bam Bigelow & Nick Busick vs. Waylon Mercy & Stan Hansen

 

Bigelow and Busick were not caught off guard like they were last week, and more than held their own in this hard hitting match. Hansen was able to catch Bigelow with a lariat that knocked him out of the ring, resulting in a countout victory for him and Mercy, but the two sides kept slugging it out after the match.

 

Shane Douglas vs. The Great Muta

 

Muta won with the Moonsault

 

Mike Rotunda & Barry Windham vs. The Hollywood Knights

 

This was a tightly contested match with an exciting battle of matwork and holds between Severn and Rotunda. Windham wound up scoring the pinfall after a Bulldog Headlock on Young, but the Knights continued to impress.

 

Buddy Rose, Ed Wiskowski & Jim Duggan vs. The Crazy Gang (Bob Orton, Grizzly Boone & Manny Fernandez)

 

Another crazy affair with lots of blood and brawling where Duggan was able to hit the running clothesline from the three point stance on Orton to get the one two three.

 

Pacific Heavyweight Title Match : Eddie Gilbert © vs. Brian Adams

 

Gilbert was defending his title against Gary Hart's bodyguard, and one could tell that Adams focus was less on winning the title and more on doing as much damage as possible. Adams and Hart were accompanied by Chris Adams and the Great Muta, so Gilbert and Missy Hyatt brought along Vic Steamboat and Doug Gilbert for backup. The champ did his best to stick and move against the big American Ninja, but every shot that Adams was able to land clearly knocked Gilbert for a loop. Gilbert was able to bounce back and eventually get Adams off his feet before wrapping him in a Figure Four leglock, at which point Muta got involved by entering the ring and hitting the Power Driver elbow drop. The ref called for the DQ, but both sides kept on brawling until PCW security eventually cleared them from the ring.

Wellington came close to pinning Mando on a number of occasions, but Guerrero wound up winning with a German Suplex

 

Ron Simmons vs. Chris Candido

 

Candido did everything he could at the start of the match to avoid locking Simmons, but still gave the much larger Simmons quite a challenge before going down to a big power slam

 

Dan Severn vs. Shane Douglas

 

Douglas gave his best effort, trying to adjust to the loss of his partner, but Severn ended up dominating him before forcing him to give up to a Body Scissors Sleeper

 

Doug Gilbert vs. Jim Neidhart

 

In this latest chapter in the war between Missy Hyatt International and Gary Hart International, Gilbert took down Neidhart with a top rope clothesline

 

Steve Blackman vs. Chris Adams

 

Blackman, a newcomer from Annville , Pennsylvania, put in a game effort against Adams before the Gentleman hit the Superkick to get the win

 

The Thundercats (Too Cold Scorpio & Norman Smiley) vs. Iron & Steel (Larry Cameron & Tony Atlas)

 

Cameron pinned his former colleague Smiley after the Harlem Hammer (running double axehandle to the back of the head and neck)

 

Badd Company vs. The Midnight Express

 

An exciting and intense tag team showdown where the momentum swung back and forth. The end came when Tanaka had Eaton set up for the cartwheel kick, but as he was coming off the ropes, Condrey nailed him in the back with Cornette's tennis racket. Eaton followed up with a clothesline to get the one two three.

 

California Title Match : Al Perez © vs. Gary Young

 

Young, buoyed by the momentum of his new team the Hollywood Knights, wound up being a lot for Perez to try to corral but the Latin Heartthrob prevailed with the Ally-Copter.

 

Golden State Tag Team Title Match : Chavo & Hector Guerrero © vs. The Snowbirds (Owen Hart & Brian Pillman)

 

Another tightly contested tag match that ended up going to a 30 minute time limit draw

Wild Bulls are running over the competition. 

British Steel continue to give the Hart Foundation some tough challenges. 

Bigelow and Busick vs. Waylon and Hansen is the type of feud that's going to take a lot out of everybody involved. Talk about hard hitting.

Windham and Rotunda were a good team IRL. Maybe we'll see them make a run for the titles in this game. 

Duggan has certainly been a game changer for the Playboy Club. Crazy Gang better come up with a plan. 

It looks like Gary Hart's mission is to destroy Gilbert and take his title away. I cant wait for Gilbert and Muta to go at it. 

 

Ron Simmons will develop well here.

Doug Gilbert scores a big win over the Anvil. 

Blackman is welcomed to Pacific with a superkick by Adams. 

Thundercats woes continue as former partner Cameron scores the decisive pin. I'll be rooting for Iron and Steel.

Badd Co. and The Midnight Express would of given the fans their money's worth tonight. 

Loving Perez's run as Ca. Champ. A lot of good challengers he can work well with. Young is one of them. 

Snowbirds are hot on the Guerreros trail. The bookers may have to extend the time on their matches.

Pacific Wrestling Showcase from the Cow Palace , San Francisco , on ESPN / TSN, January 15^th

 

Leo Burke vs. Steve Blackman

 

Blackman made an appearance last week in a match with Chris Adams, but this would be his first PCW match, squaring off with the tough veteran Burke. The powerful youngster from Annville, Pennsylvania, impressed the fans with his speed and skill, even getting the better of Burke on a number of exchanges. Burke himself seemed impressed, nodding and grinning between lockups. Blackman looked to take the match with a rollup off the ropes, but Burke blocked it by grabbing the ropes, then reversed it with a belly to back suplex that kept Blackman's shoulders down for the three count. After the match, Burke helped Blackman to his feet and enthusiastically shook his hand, which Blackman accepted as the fans cheered.

 

The Thundercats (Too Cold Scorpio & Norman Smiley) vs. The Wild Bulls (Ed & Rick Gantner)

 

The Wild Bulls have been on a hot streak since arriving in PCW, stampeding over the competition in devastating fashion. Although greeted mostly with boos when they came out to their trademark song, "Flirting With Disaster" by Molly Hatchett, the was a small but boisterous group of fans who dubbed themselves the Bullpen who loudly cheered their every move, getting a slight grin from the Gantner Brothers. The Thundercats, on the other hand, seemed listless and disjointed, completely lacking the enthusiasm they had before their current losing streak. The Wild Bulls made fairly short work of the Thundercats, with Ed Gantner finishing off Smiley by nailing him with the Bull Hammer (running forearm smash to the face).  After the match, Rick grabbed Scorpio and looked like he was going to give the Hangman's Drop (two handed chokeslam) , but his brother whispered something in his ear, and Rick nodded and let Scorpio go. The two brothers took a moment to point at the Bullpen before returning to the locker room. What will it take to put a spark back into the Thundercats and get them back to what they used to be.

 

Chris Candido vs. Jeremy Crawford

 

Despite his terrible attitude, Candido has gotten a number of wins on PCW TV, and made a strong impression with his talent if not his personality. He was all over Crawford for the get go, bouncing him about the ring with high speed dropkicks and throws before pinning him after a top rope headbutt. After the match, Frank Bonnema spoke with him at ringside.

 

Bonnema : Chris Candido, a lot of people say that you have a lot of talent and potential, if only you can improve your attitude.

 

Candido : There's nothing wrong with my attitude, Bonnema. It's the other wrestlers and these so called fans with the lousy attitude. They are clearly jealous of me, with my superior skill, looks and athleticism. And the referees! They are the worst! They are all either incompetent or on the take! But I am a star that will keep on shining, no matter who they put in the ring with me.

 

Candido is cut off by a cheer from the fans, but it certainly isn't for him. Leo Burke makes his way down to ringside and joins Bonnema and Candido.

 

Burke : Begging your pardon, Frank, Chris, I had to come out because I have something to say. I've watched all of your matches, son, and I see greatness in you. You have the moves, you have the drive, you have the ability. But what you are lacking is maturity. That comes with time and focus, and I can help you get there. I know you are a bit hot headed, you remind me of myself when I was your age. But I am sure I can help you work past that. I've done my best to give guidance to Bam Bam Bigelow and Nick Busick, and I think I can do the same for you. The Army is looking to expand, and I can see a place for you in our ranks. What do you say?

 

Burke offers his hand for a handshake. Candido stares at it for a moment, then swats is aside and starts laughing.

 

Candido : Seriously, old man? I'm Chris Candido! What could you possibly teach me? I don't need any army, and I don't need any friends. And if I did, I can certainly find better ones than you. Get out of my interview and quit wasting my time!

 

Burke looks like he is about to slug Candido, but composes himself and returns to the locker room. Candido tries to get back to his interview, but the crowd drowns out everything he says with boos, and the so-called Blonde Bombshell storms off in a huff.

 

Shane Douglas vs. Gary Young

 

Shane Douglas has not had a good time of it since arriving in PCW. After debuting with much promise, his tag team of the Gold Exchange ended almost as soon as it began when his partner was taken out at the hands of the Wild Bulls. Being forced to go into singles action, he lost his match last week against Dan "The Beast" Severn. This time out, he would be facing Severn's partner in the Hollywood Knights, "Gorgeous" Gary Young, while The Beast glowered at him from ringside. The fiery young Douglas was determined not to be intimidated, and kept going after Young no matter what sort of tricks and cheapshots were thrown his way. Young got madder and madder throughout the match, and this led to him to drop his guard and charged right at him, only for Douglas to catch him in a belly to belly suplex and shockingly get the three count. He didn't get a chance to enjoy his victory, though, as Severn dove into the ring and took him down, raining punches on his face before locking him in the Body Scissors Sleeper. Young started shouting abuse at the trapped Douglas until help arrived in the form of Nick Busick, Bam Bam Bigelow and Leo Burke charging to the ring and ran off the Hollywood Knights. Busick then brought Douglas to his feet and he and the Three Man Army helped him back to the locker room. Douglas may have been on his own before, but it looks like he may have found some friends now.

 

Vic Steamboat & Doug Gilbert vs. Keith Sowell & Eric Hafemann

 

Missy Hyatt may have been initially reluctant to take on Vic Steamboat as a part of Hyatt International, but he and Doug Gilbert have proved a loyal and valuable part of her organization, leaping right into the firing line of her war with Gary Hart. Missy was enthusiastically cheering her men on as they easily handled Sowell and Havemann. Gilbert pasted Sowell with lefts and rights before Steamboat came off the top with a Flying Cross Body Press to win the match. A commanding victory, but they will be facing much sterner competition in Gary Hart International.

 

Interview : Frank Bonnema stands in the ring

 

Bonnema : Ladies and gentleman, my next guests certainly made a big splash with their Pacific Coast debut a couple of weeks ago … Jim Cornette and the Midnight Express!

 

The crowd loudly jeers as Cornette struts to the ring, accompanied as always by Dennis Condrey and Bobby Eaton, along with his bodyguard, Big Bubba Rogers. Cornette takes a moment when they get to the ring but jaws with the fans, but clearly, he and his men are reveling in the negative attention.

 

Bonnema : Jim Cornette, you definitely know how to make an entrance. Your appearance at the New Years Day Special sent shock waves throughout Pacific Coast Wrestling. After so much success across America, what brings you to PCW?

 

Cornette : Well, Frank Bonnema, we were starting to run out of places to conquer! Everywhere we went, we ruled the roost. But we kept hearing about the Pacific Coast and how it was the place to be. The most beautiful women, the best food, and the toughest tag team competition. Well, we knew that we had to make our way there and show you little people what the true kings of wrestling looked like. So we pulled up stakes and made our way to PCW. And I gotta say, we soon discovered that we were lied to! *the audience boos loudly* The women are nothing but silicone and spray tans, there is nobody here who can make a decent Mint Julep, and as for the so-called tag team competition? I have never before seen a more putrid collection of half baked tag teams in my life! The Kitty Cat Club couldn't even hold it together through two matches with us without Larry Cameron abandoning ship. The Gold Exchange crashed harder than the Stock Market and we aren't going to see them anymore. There's a bunch of brain dead fratboys calling themselves the Brigade, who would be better off calling themselves Delta House. Those dumb jocks would lose a battle of wits with a tackling dummy. And there is this Lower Third class of English schoolboys named, what is it, Flock Of Seagulls? Whoever it was that hired those juvenile delinquents oughta be fired in disgrace! Face it, you've never seen a tag team as  talented as "Beautiful" Bobby and "Loverboy" Dennis, and if that is what you consider great tag teams, we are going to have a pretty easy time of it.

 

Bonnema : Wait a second, Jim Cornette, you keep crowing about how amazing your team is. But a lot of your victories come thanks to interference from your bodyguard, Big Bubba Rogers.

 

Cornette : Now that is outrageous Slander, Bonnema, and you had best watch yourself before my mother's attorneys have a long chat with you. My boys are more than capable of getting the job done on their own. While Bobby and Dennis take care of business in the ring, Bubba protects me and my interests outside of the ring. That is what makes me smarter than all of the other alleged managers in PCW. Gary Hart is just a copycat. He sees that I have a bodyguard, he just has to go and get himself his own copy cat, like some Gary Come Lately. And Missy Hyatt … well, I would tell you what I think of her, but my sainted mother raised me to not associate with women like her, so I won't even dignify her with the attention. Face it folks, Jim Cornette and the Midnight Express are here to stay, and you might as well get used to it!

 

Buddy Rose vs. Grizzly Boone

 

For a while, it was looking like the Crazy Gang would run unchecked through Pacific Coast Wrestling, and it was only a matter of time before they crushed the Playboy Club for good. But then came "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan, and that was all tossed on its head. The pride of Glens Falls may seem like an odd match with the Playboy and the Polish Prince, but together they have gotten the better of the Crazy Gang on a number of occasions, and have steadily chipped away at the aura of invincibility that Bob Orton's crew had previously possessed. Both Duggan and Wiskowski were backing up Rose in this match, just as Boone was accompanied by Bob Orton and Manny Fernandez. Rose was clearly no longer intimidated by the huge Mountain Man, and taunted him as he played cat and mouse throughout the match. Boone tried to keep focused on the match, but the opposing sides outside the ring provided a constant distraction for both him and the ref. Orton and Fernandez tried to interfere, but found themselves being chased around the ring by Duggan, waving his 2X4. This caused the ref to take his eye off the action in the ring, and when Boone tried to come off the ropes, Wiskowski yanked down the top rope, causing the big Grizzly to tumble to the outside. Boone was unable to make it back into the ring in time, losing by countout. Duggan and Rose have now twice beaten Cabin Fever in singles matches. But can they get it done when the Pacific Tag Team Titles are on the line?

Burke gets the win and Blackman gets respect. I could see Burke mentoring Blackman. 

Wild Bulls are on a serious roll while the Thundercats are in a serious slump. Looks like the Gantners have a following. 

Speaking of mentoring, Burke tries to offer Candido some guidance but gets laughed at. Candido is quickly becoming a very hated man here. 

Douglas pulls off a huge upset on Young and takes a beating for it. However, he appears to have some new found friends with Burke and his army. 

Vic Steamboat and Doug Gilbert seem to have some nice chemistry. Tough task ahead when they meet Gary Hart's Hart Foundation. 

I remember you saying you didn't like to write interviews but when you have Jim Cornette, there's no way out of hearing him talk LOL. I could totally hear every word in his voice. I think Cornette and the Midnight Express are going to have a tremendous run here. 

Playboy Club might be getting the cheers but they're not afraid to break the rules against other rulebreakers. They're getting the better of the Crazy Gang...for now.

The rowdy Oakland crowd was host to a particularly loud contingent of the Bullpen who hooted and cheered for everything the Gantner Brothers did. This was another one sided match that the Wild Bulls won when Rick planted Scorpio with the Hangman's Drop (two handed chokeslam)

 

Steven Regal vs. Jim Neidhart

 

Neidhart tried to bully Regal throughout the match, but Regal lured him into a running tackle in the corner, then dodged out of the way. He then followed up with the Regal Plex (modified cradle suplex) to get the three count

 

Barry Windham vs. Larry Cameron

 

A hard hitting match between two big powerhouse wrestlers. Windham was able to catch Cameron with a Western Lariat to get a hard fought victory

 

Buddy Rose, Jim Duggan & Ed Wiskowski vs. The Crazy Gang (Bob Orton, Manny Fernandez & Grizzly Boone)

 

Another chaotic brawl between these two factions that ended with Rose pinning Fernandez after the Inside Out Backbreaker

 

Eddie Gilbert, Vic Steamboat & Doug Gilbert vs. Chris Adams, The Great Muta & Brian Adams

 

A long and intense battle between Hyatt International and Hart Internantional. Muta was able to sneak in spraying Doug Gilbert in the eyes with the Green Mist before hitting a spin kick to score the pinfall

Pacific Coast Wrestling show from the Selland Arena, Fresno , January 17^th

 

Biff Wellington vs. Hector Guerrero

 

Wellington went all out against Guerrero and came close to pinning him on several occasions, but the more experienced Hector snared him with the Guerrero Clutch to get the pinfall

 

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Waylon Mercy

 

Bigelow won with a Slingshot Splash

 

Mike Rotunda vs. Tony Atlas

 

Both Barry Windham and Larry Cameron were in their respective partners' corners for this match. Cameron wound up taking advantage of a ref distraction by coming in the ring and hitting the Harlem Hammer (running double axehandle to the back of the head and neck) on Rotunda. Atlas then followed up with a running splash to get the tainted win

 

Brian Pillman vs. Mando Guerrero

 

Pillman has been developing quite a following, both for his good looks and considerable wrestling talent. He won a very closely contested bout with Mando when he was able to hit a springboard clothesline that the fans dubbed Air Pillman

 

Nick Busick vs. Stan Hansen

 

A big match between two heavy hitters that threatened to break the ring. Hansen was able to blindside Busick with a surprise short lariat to get the win.

 

Owen Hart vs. Chavo Guerrero

 

The youngest son of veteran wrestler Stu Hart has generated a lot of buzz among the fans. He had a classic match with Chavo Guerrero where it looked like Chavo had gotten the best of him by setting him up for a German Suplex, but Owen blocked it and countered with a belly to belly suplex for the victory

 

Leo Burke vs. Chris Candido

 

Candido took an eternity to lock up, and once he did, took every opportunity to complain and sulk about the fans, the ref, and anything else that came to mind. Fair play to him, he did show a lot of talent and solid ring instincts in his match with Burke, which ended when Burke was able to hit a belly to back suplex and keep Candido's shoulders to the mat for the one two three. Burke offered Candido a handshake , but Candido gave it a derisive snort and stormed off in a huff.

 

Badd Company vs. The Midnight Express

 

An epic tag battle that had the fans on their feet throughout. The Midnights were able to pull out the win by hitting the Double Goozle on Tanaka.

 

California Title Match : Al Perez © vs. Tracy Smothers

 

This was a very tense title match where Perez had to constantly be on his guard against Smothers' underhanded tactics. It looked like Smothers just might take the title when he was able to hit the Jawjacker on Perez, but in doing so Perez collided with the ref who was unable to make the count. By the time the ref recovered, Perez was able to hit a German Suplex on Smothers to successfully defend his title.

Been listening to a lot of Cornette podcast clips during Lockdown and he is a very easy voice to write in.

Couple of fun house shows.

Simmons gets the fans in Oakland warmed up by taking Mando down with the spear.

Wild Bulls continue their dominance over the Thundercats. I'm liking the Bullpen fans. 

Playboy Club get the win over the Crazy Gang. Rose was pretty big in the Bay Area, so good call with him getting the fall. 

Hart Int. win a battle against Hyatt Int. Gilbert is going to have to find a way to counter the mist. Perhaps a fireball? LOL 

Looks like a feud is developing between Windham/Rotunda and Atlas/Cameron. I'm all for it. 

Air Pillman and Owen Hart are gaining some good buzz as they each pick up wins over the Guerreros. 

Hansen and Busick is one hard hitting match up. Hansen picks up the big win. I could defiantly see Hansen making a serious run at the title.

Burke gets the best of Candido but Candido's attitude remains the same. 

I know Badd Co. and the Midnight Express tore the house down. 

Smothers came really close to winning the Ca. title. Will Smothers eventually dethrone Perez? I'm enjoying this program.

Pacific Wrestling Showcase from the Olympic Auditorium , Los Angeles , on ESPN / TSN, January 22^nd

 

Ron Simmons vs. Ronnie Bardah

 

Ever since his debut in PCW a few weeks ago, Ron Simmons has steamrolled over close to everyone he has faced. The powerful former football player has rapidly established himself as someone to watch. His colleagues in the Brigade were at ringside to cheer him on as he kept rolling straight over young Ronnie Bardah. Simmons tossed the rookie all over the ring before flattening him with a running spear to take the match. The Brigade are looking to do big things in 1986 and, with Simmons on their side, it would be hard to deny them.

 

Brian Pillman vs. Hector Guerreros

 

Another group on the rise in PCW is the Snowbirds, who have compiled an impressive record, considering their relative inexperience. They have gotten some singles wins against the Guerreros and have even taken them to a draw in Golden State Tag Title matches. While the Guerreros were initially dismissive of the newcomers, they are taking them quite seriously now. All of both teams were assembled for this matchup between Hector and Pillman. Guerrero certainly had his hands full with the handsome former Cincinnati Bengal, and the result was an incredibly fast paced match where the momentum seemed like it turned on a dime at several points. A frustrated Hector tossed Pillman from the ring, but Pillman caught himself on the top rope and landed on the ring apron. When Hector turned around, Brian hit him with the Air Pillman and scored the one two three. The Guerreros had best think fast if they want to maintain their grip on the Golden State Tag Titles.

Bonnema : Ladies and gentleman, my next guests are a tag team making a lot of waves here in Pacific Coast Wrestling … Gary Young and Dan Severn, the Hollywood Knights!

 

As "Hollywood Nights" by Bob Seger plays over the arena PA, the crowd loudly booed as the Knights headed to the ring. Gary Young was laughing at the response while Dan Severn reacted with his usual stern indifference.

 

Bonnema : Dan Severn, considering your substantial credentials as an amateur wrestling, including being an alternate on the 1984 American Olympic team. You would be the last person one would expect to be teaming with, umm, someone like Gary Young. *Bonnema cringes at Young's possible response , but "Gorgeous" Gary just laughs it off* What exactly is it that brings you to PCW as part of the Hollywood Knights?

 

Severn : "Alternate". Let's just let that word roll around in your mind a bit, Bonnema. "Alternate". You're right, Frank Bonnema, my credentials are substantial. I am a two time All American, Canada Cup Gold medalist, National Sports Festival gold medalist, and several time amateur champion. I am a black belt in judo and jiu jitsu as well as a Sambo master.  I have won titles in every country I have visited, and I have visited plenty. And yet, I go to the 1984 Olympics as an ALTERNATE! In the Olympic trials, I beat Lou Banach, plain and simple. But the judges , in their infinite wisdom, felt otherwise, and gave the spot to Banach. They sent me here, to Los Angeles, as an ALTERNATE and I had to sit and watch as the man I beat take the Olympic Gold Medal that should have been mine! That stuck in my craw and would not go away, until I knew I had to make a big move. I was going to come back to LA, to Pacific Coast Wrestling, and show those ingrates on the Olympic team just what they passed up. I don't care who I have to go through, I will win every title in this place, and there's nobody here who is man enough to stop me. Gary Young and I see eye to eye, he knows what he wants and I know what I want, and together, we are putting together the organization to take over PCW.

 

Bonnema : Organization?

 

Gary Young : You got it, Bonnema! The Hollywood Knights are going to take over the whole of Pacific Coast Wrestling, and we are expanding to take all of the titles. And who would be better to join to join the Hollywood Knights than Mr. Hollywood himself?

 

Bonnema : Mr. Hollywood? Who on earth is Mr. Hollywood?

 

Gary Young : Well, that would be the newest member of the Hollywood Knights … "Mr. Hollywood" Tracy Smothers!

 

The crowd boos even louder as Tracy Smothers, clad in a shiny silver jacket, comes out to the ring.

 

Tracy Smothers : That's right, Frank Bonnema, it's me! Mr. Hollywood! The Southern Boys, that team was too small for my talent and vision. My former partner was too much of a small time hick to run with me. I am destined for the bright lights of Hollywood! That's the only place big enough for someone of my considerable good looks and skill. And who better to be my colleagues than the Hollywood Knights? And what more fitting title for me to have than the California Title? Keep that belt nice and shiny for me, Al Perez, because it's only a matter of time before it ends up around my trim and deserving waist. The Hollywood Knights are the next big thing, and Mr. Hollywood is going to make sure of it!

 

The Thundercats (Too Cold Scorpio & Norman Smiley) vs. The Dog Pound (Brian Knobbs & Rick Steiner)

 

While the Wild Bulls have their Bull Pen, a small group of rowdy fans have taken the Dog Pound to their hearts. Calling themselves the Wild Dogs, these fans barked and cheered when Knobbs and Steiner came out, frankly getting on the nerves of the other fans nearby. Things haven't been going nearly as well, however, for Scorpio and Smiley. Ever since they were abandoned by Larry Cameron, the Thundercats have seen their fortunes spiral into free fall. Loss after loss has stacked up and the former Golden State Tag champs have felt their confidence dissolve as a result. Even though the fans still cheered them, Scorpio and Smiley seemed listless and disinterested throughout the match and never really had control of the pace of the match.  The Dog Pound easily dominated the match, and when Steiner caught Scorpio coming off the ropes with a jarring powerslam. Or it least, it should have been, but after the bell rang, signaling the end of the match, and Smiley helped up Scorpio, Knobbs gave Scorpio a hard shove from behind, sending him back to the mat. Scorpio tried to ignore it and got up again, but now Steiner shoved Smiley. Smiley was quite annoyed by this and offhandedly shoved Knobbs back, but Knobbs retorted by slapping him in the head. The two teams escalated from shoving to punches, and sparked into a full on brawl. The PCW officials came out, but it was nearly impossible to get the two teams separated, and they were slugging it out on the outside of the ring and even through the barricades. Eventually, it was only the threat of suspension from PCW Commissioner Dutch Savage that sent them back to their respective locker rooms.

Bonnema : Ladies and gentleman, after starting out as one half of a tag team, my next guest finds himself on his own in Pacific Cast Wrestling … Shane Douglas!

 

The fans cheer warmly as Douglas heads to the ring, and in turn, Douglas takes time to shake hands with the fans before he joins Frank Bonnema .

 

Bonnema : Shane Douglas, the Gold Exchange debuted with a lot of promise, but after your partner went out at the hands of the Wild Bulls, you have been on your own. How have you adjusted to singles action.

 

Douglas : Well, Frank Bonnema, it has certainly been challenging. I've done my best , but as I found out last week in my match with Gary Young, it can be rough without somebody to watch my back.

 

Bonnema : Well, Nick Busick and Bam Bam Bigelow were certainly quick to come to your side last week. Perhaps they might be people you could turn to.

 

Douglas : Busick and Bigelow are good people, but I would never want to impose on them. No, I am just going to have to make it through this on my own.

 

Douglas is cut off by "Ramrod" by Bruce Springsteen plays over the arena PA. Douglas is initially puzzled, but his face breaks out into a broad grin as he sees who is coming out : Nick Busick, Bam Bam Bigelow and Leo Burke. Busick asks Frank Bonnema for the microphone.

 

Busick : So sorry to bother you gents, but I heard what you were saying, Shane, and I just had to come out. Most folks don't know this, but Shane and I go way back. Before I came to PCW, I spent a lot of time in Pittsburgh, and when I was there, Shane and his teacher, Dominic De Nucci , were good friends to me. They took me in and made sure that I always had a place to stay and work. When I saw he was coming to PCW, I was rooting for him all the way, and when I saw him attacked by the Hollywood Knights, I just couldn't stand by. Shane, I don't want to hear any more talk about you imposing on me. You're my friend, and friends help each other.

 

Bigelow : Any friend of Nick's is a friend of mine, Shane. He's been telling us what a great guy you are, and Leo has something he wants to say to you.

 

Burke : Son, Bam Bam is right, Nick has been constantly raving about you, and having seen you in action, I can tell he hasn't been exaggerating. I see a lot potential in you : strength, talent, and most importantly, a positive attitude. I've given some guidance to Nick and Bam Bam here, and I have been proud of what they have achieved together. I offered the same guidance  to Chris Candido, but that was a mistake. He didn't even want to hear the offer. But you don't have a chip on your shoulder like he does. You are smart, skilled, and willing to learn. It would be an honor to help teach you and have you help the Three Man Army become the Five Man Army.

 

Douglas : Five Man Army?

 

Burke : That's right . Candido never gave me a chance to say this, but I have got a hell of a partner for you, and I think you two will make for an incredible combination. What do you say?

 

Burke offers his hand and Douglas wastes no time in shaking it.

 

Douglas : Thank you, Mister Burke, I accept. I promise, I won't let you down.

 

Badd Company vs. The Midnight Express

 

Last week, Jim Cornette made some comments that Missy Hyatt took quite personally, so she demanded a match to that her men, Badd Company, could defend her honour. The Midnight Express tried to bully Diamond and Tanaka , but Missy's men would have none of it, and for a while, Badd Company drew on their considerable speed to run circles around them. Eventually, Condrey and Eaton started getting their shots in, and the two teams waged a war that had the fans rapt in attention. Missy Hyatt was staring daggers at Jim Cornette as he kept up a steady stream of snide comments, but eventually he took it too far, and she stormed over to his side of the ring and slapped him in the face. He immediately had his omnipresent bodyguard, Big Bubba Rogers, get in her face, so immediately Paul Diamond left the ring to interpose himself between his manager and the big man from Louisville. This proved to be a big distraction as Condrey ambushed Tanaka with a clothesline from behind, setting him up for a neckbreaker from Eaton that got the pinfall. Missy had her men immediately leave the ring after the match, but she was clearly seething as she headed to the back, swearing vengeance all the way.
