Boss Rock Posted June 6 Posted June 6 I haven't seen a ton of Dynamite Kid, but the Tiger Mask series has definitely not held up well. I wonder if that's the case for the rest of his resume.

They both seem like very well regarded pro wrestlers in ring, but it looks like not so much as time passes. They're far less bullet proof than other contemporary guys like Fujinami, Robinson, Baba or whoever. Why would that be the case? Harley in particular interests me the most, as he's a big figure in late 70s-early 80s (the biggest, maybe?) and has a lot of material on tape. I think the Kid drop is kinda weird, his NJPW stuff is *still* quite strong and subsequent footage reviews have proven that he was quite solid in AJPW even way past his peak and beyond. It might be perhaps just people being tired of that style because of similarities to modern work or revisionism. I can't really pin any single element where there was a movement against him or anything, especially since Tiger Mask did very well by comparison.
Matt D Posted June 7 Posted June 7 Eats up guys to the detriment of the match from 88 on and to a lesser degree from 84 on. People are now lower on Harts tags but higher on Dream Team ones. A lot of what made his case was of the moment and not timeless.
ohtani's jacket Posted June 7 Posted June 7 I guess favorite targets like Sayama and Brody have rebounded while Race and Dynamite Kid haven't. In the case of DK, I don't think people take into account his WoS work, his Calgary stuff, or even his Portland work. That said, his positives amount to an extremely short career. It's really a matter of whether you think his execution is deserving of his rep.
funkdoc Posted Wednesday at 10:27 PM Posted Wednesday at 10:27 PM Since i saw someone complain about Alex Wright finishing above his father here, i can give some possible context on that: A few years back, one of the more popular Youtube channels in this space (Wrestling Bios) had been doing a series called "Reliving the War" where he reviewed each week's episode of both Raw and Nitro. He happens to be a huge Alex Wright fan and would mark the fuck out in his videos whenever he appeared, and that enthusiasm eventually spread to his audience. There's been a big reappreciation of him and a lot of younger fans discovering him through this (and Bischoff singing his praises on podcasts also can't hurt with the older demographics). Oh yeah, and his promo in the WCW Thunder video game has lived on as a meme to this day ("You're gonna have a hell of a wictory, I PROMISE!!!!!"). i'm willing to bet that's where this came from. He also just fits really well with Gen Z culture loving the goofballs & dorks of any given roster, especially with how memorable that dance is!

I think Steve Wright also suffers from being niche and not much buzz. I am the person nominated Steve Wright the week before nominations were due with a good amount of other wrestlers. I assume he fell into the pepole who liked assumed he was nominated. I think Alex Wright has the benefit of wrestling tv and ppv matches that have pre-embeded better quality production wise and story/character investment especially with so much WCW nostalgia right now (Tom Green also doing WCW streams and the Vault). Steve Wright is digging into tapes wrestler and even than it's alot can be difficult given the quality of CWA footage. I haven't seen enough of either to say who is better though.
