At the time this felt like one of those rare instances where WWE actually presented a dream match. These two had been kept apart from the time they both ascended to the top of Raw & Smackdown during the build to Mania 21 which made for a truly fresh match. Even with Taker/Edge in a Cell, this still seemed like the real draw at the show. They didn't disappoint, working an oddly compact match in under 14 minutes that's a virtual sprint compared with some main event matches today. They work a basic power match with lariats, powerbombs and slams for Batista while Cena is constantly looking for the FU. A neat wrinkle along the way is Batista borrowing a page from Flair's book as he clips the knee, goes to a kneebreaker and then actually breaks out the Figure-Four. What I loved here is how simple this was. Basic transitions borrowed from the Horsemen like a kick to the gut. Yeah, we had finishers teased throughout but they weren't spammed. They maintained a solid pace as there were no real rest spots or killing clock for anyone to regain their wind, but at the same time they let everything sink in. Every shot and offensive maneuver was allowed to breathe so that its impact registered. One legit false finish at the end on the powerbomb where Batista caught Cena coming off the top for his legdrop that absolute absolutely popped the crowd, and made the finish that followed thereafter all the more satisfying. Still amazing that this was a 100% clean job, although Cena didn't look at all the worse for wear coming out of a match that felt like stage 1 in a prolonged feud. Perhaps Cena's injury had something to do with that but they wouldn't return to it until 2010 when Batista was a true heel. Great, simple match with no real waste. ****

It's a wild, bloody Puerto Rican brawl; what's not to love? Miguelito looks so great here as the worlds most badass/hairiest Freddy Mercury. A guy with great punches, throwing lots of punches is probably the easiest match formula for a good match. He had some fucking crazy "fired up" selling too and I liked how he started bitch slapping his opponent as if he wanted more of a fight. Both guys get thrown over the announce table awkwardly, barfight style, and chairs thrown in their face while security guards anxiously watch for potential knife attackers. Castillo's transition to offense was a little weak but his offense looked plenty violent. I also liked his bloody 1000 yard stare. Some bullshit going on for the finish involving Carlos Colon and some other guy which actually ended up being cool aswell. -

This was a really good studio match between two talented young workers. Hell knows why, but for some reason they got a lot things right that many other joshi matches get wrong. It may be just my imagination. The thing I liked most about this bout was that it was basically a primitive approximation of a lucha title match. They start it very mat based and build nicely from simple holds into submission nearfalls. Then Bolshoi Kid was working like one of the stranger luchadores - think Matematico, or maybe Super Astro, doing all these funny clown moves that work really well for an eccentric technical wrestler. Mariko shows her colors when it's time to drop bombs and she dishes out some big suplexes with a lot of snap. Really good sequences where Mariko gains the upperhand and lands a series of big dives, but gets caught with a piledriver on the floor. Mariko actually sells the floor piledriver a good deal allowing Bolshoi to get some nearfalls over her at this point much more established opponent. Quality match, proof Bolshoi could really go and Mariko too.
