DVD #2: Rock & Roll Express vs Rick Rude & Manny Fernandez
Resident Evil replied to Loss's topic in DVD Discussion
Very good match. -
I watched this and it was a pretty good match but the MSG match is a much more enjoyable experience and it is definitely the number 1 Bret vs Yokozuna match I've seen. I saw some differences and similarities here.
-
I don't know about this match as I haven't seen it yet but the MSG one proves Bret Hart is one of the best wrestlers of all time. Yokozuna has always been an underrated wrestler. Charasmatic and he stood out. Come to think of it, I can't even think of one guy in the WWE who currently stands out as much or is as charasmatic as Yokozuna.
-
It's different and it's a one time thing. I liked it. It's good to get the audience talking about you and stand out some. It's not enough to keep people away from watching Mysterio and it helps him keep his "x" factor. The match itself I unfortunately only watched part of but it was shaping up really nicely. A very, very good match from what I saw. Cena vs Orton was okay. Strong effort. Is Orton's punt move actually legal? I don't understand why every other wrestler on the roster doesn't use it if it works so well. Regal dancing was pretty cool.

Actually I think Benoit would have gotten into the WWF eventually through his connection with the Harts. He did have a tryout with the WWF shortly before he joined WCW in 1995, but I think a deal couldn't be struck because Vince was unwilling to work around his Japanese dates. That said, I doubt he would have gotten above the level of a dependable mid card technician if he had never made his name in WCW first. Bret Hart if I remember him correctly was trying to get Benoit in along with his brother Owen very early in his career. Perhaps as early as 1988 for Benoit. Bret would've looked after him in the WWF. I think he would've done well there especially with his talent level. However, it would've been an undeniable uphill battle for him.
-
Well I think pretty obvious that RnR v Heavenly bodies from WWF smokes Steiners v Heavenly Bodies from WWF. But I doubt you're arguing that WWF Steiners was prime Steiners. And I assume Resident Evil would tell you that Steiners v Heavenly Bodies was better because it was worked like proto-Smackdown Six with lots of meaningless moves to get pops. But assuming we're talking WCW Steiner 89-91 as prime: I remember watching RNR v Doom shortly after watching a ton of Brainbusters in WWF and being struck by how much better the RNR v Doom was then any Brainbuster match. I liked RnR v Doom a bunch but would be uncomfortable pimping it as in the top twenty tag matches in WCW that year. I haven't watched Steiners v Doom as recently as I watched RnR v Doom. Watching lots of Mid-South has made me want to watch as much Butch Reed as I can get my hands on so I should start tracking down Doom matches. But are you arguing RocknRoll v Doom>Steiners v Doom. Quick points before I have to go. Wow. Different worlds altogether. Wow. When did the Steiners backlash start? Is there anything safe from backlash? Who's next? Don't know if I've ever seen Steiners vs Heavenly Bodies. I think I may have have but I've forgotten about it. Same deal with the Bodies vs the Expres so I don't know what I'd tell you about what match is better. I'd have to watch them again. I can tell you that I do like believability in my matches so the Steiners always have an advantage over the Express who I like but I don't find as believable or as aweinspiring. I don't like blanket statements like proto smackdown six with lots of meaningless moves to get pops especially when a good portion of the matches were constructed well. Steiners were great up until at least 94 in my opinion and popular in both New Japan and WCW. THe tag team where you buy them being as good as or even better than the main event kayfabe wise. I think they left a terrific impression on the fanbase. People aren't putting this into perspective here especially what it was like at the time to watch the Steiners wrestle at the time. It was somewhat similar to watching Tiger Mask wrestle in the 80s. Influential in making others around them up their game. I would also say you can sit bits and pieces of their influence years later when they helped bring in a more realistic, more inspired style (at times) in wrestling. Don't care for their stiffing people but did like their aggression. I happy for the Express getting in the Hall of Fame. They deserve it.
-
I honostly can't see how anyone couldn't vote for the Steiners. The most believable tag team of all time who were draws and energised crowds like few others. A sure lock for me.

WON awards front-runners for the first half of the year
Resident Evil replied to Bix's topic in Megathread archive
What I"m saying is that people are often in a hurry to knock down the good guys in life and praise the bad guys if possible. I sense that in this topic. Benoit was a psychopath. Did we know it? No, but it always reminds me of that conversation I had with my friend years ago. We were talking about how succussful people can be really strong in one area hence their being famous for soemthing but on the other hand be weak in another area giving them all sorts of problems. Than we started talking about how lucky some guys were that they were strong mentally in one area and not in another way which would lead them to insanity, jail or something else. Two of the guys we talked about that day among others were Benoit and Kobashi. 2 of the most driven superstars ever in an activity that is among the hardest you can find on this earth. "What if they were born a different way?" we mentioned. Than everybody would hate them and they'd be the exact opposite of heros. I always knew Benoit was wired differently than others. His training outside of the ring proved the guy was a nutcase and different from all others. I personally loved that about him although it did worry me some. In that sense, he was a psychopath already. I hope I"m using the word somewhat correctly there. However, I don't think Benoit was a psychopath murderer from the get go. In 1989, for example I don't think Benoit would have murdered his kid and wife if he was indeed married. Maybe he could've. I don't know. Maybe the roots were there because he was obviously a different kind of person than your average Joe. Drugs change people and I've seen what drugs can do to people. Brain damage changes people. Life changes people. We don't know exactly what everything did but it does seem Benoit was detoriating mentally over the last while. That indicated something was changing with him. This is not an excuse but just an observation. I just feel so sad over this. I have two psychopath uncles who compound things with their drug problems. One of them I got into a nasty confrontation yesterday after he was drugged up. The other one is unbelievably insane. He shows problem signs all the time and it would be crazy to trust him at all even if he's acting okay for a bit. The signs are there and you have to look at them, not ignore. If someone shows signs in wrestling, than you have to look at them too which there has been some avoidance of in this thread. For example, who would let Lawler around their kids? Who would go in a shower with Bradshaw? If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, than you have to be extra careful to make sure that duck doens't do anything duckish around you. -

This scares me here. If I could exaggerate here for a second, I'm seeing the common problem of people here wanting to tear down good guys and build up bad guys. (I'm not commenting on who's good or bad but just making an observation) It's also the same problem some people have here when discussing wrestling. It's like when you legit have a good person and a bad person. However, once in awhile the good person gets in trouble and the bad person does something good. So, what happens? THis stands out more because of their personalities and people latch on to this. Add that on to people wanting to be smart and all of a sudden the good person is EVIL and the bad person is GOOD. The reality is though that the good guy is still a good guy and the bad guy is still a bad guy no matter how anyone wants to rewrite history. As for the awards, I'd vote for the Steiners if I was able to. Rey too and the Rock. Ventura was the best commentator of all time (didn't like everything he did politically) who was a big part of the WWF pie so he's in. -
On the Pillman DVD documentary, there are highlights of a guy in red tights getting annihilated by Pillman. I can't remember this match. Who is Pillman wrestling here?

Suggestions for things to include in the future
Resident Evil replied to Loss's topic in Feedback and Suggestions
Johnny Smith/Bad News Brown vs Takada/Maeda New Japan Rip Rogers vs Terry Taylor, Z-Man or Brian Pillman Various Stampede The best of rare Lucha libre. -
Thanks Jingus. That was a good match there.

Is this match online anywhere? I would like to see it again.

I'd been thinking about doing this for awhile but have never gotten around to doing it. Basically, I"ve always wanted to do a long list of matches where I'd rate them. I had a couple of problems though as I'd always forget matches that I've matched. The second problem is that I"m kind of eh on the star ranking system. I like it and I don't. So after thinking about it, I"ve decided to rate all matches on a personal enjoyment scale. All marks will be out of 10 and even those aren't definite either. A match may also have the same enjoyment rating as another match on here but that doesn't mean I felt the same about both matches. Some matches I may enjoy for their flow while others for their athetic feats and so on. I have watched an awful lot of wrestling but don't expect every match to be on here. Like I said, I can't remember everything and there will be no match here listed that's under a 6/10. This is a celebration of all my favourite matches and not a place where I"m going to diss matches hence the word favourite. Leave comments if you want. Resident Evil's Favourite Matches Ever. Continually updated 1969 Antonio Inoki vs Chris Markoff, JWA 05/16/69 6.5/10 --- Really good spirited battle with the evil villan battling the classic face. 1981 DYNAMITE KID vs TIGER MASK 8.5/10 -- The best bridge of all time? Tiger Mask certainly makes a case for it here. DYNAMITE KID vs KEITH HART STAMPEDE 8.1/10 -- Very short match but still awesome enough for a lot of enjoyment. Dynamite and Keith go at each other so hard that it would make Kobashi, Misawa and company wince. Dynamite flies off the top of the ringpost onto the floor. I"m not sure on what year this is. 1983 DYNAMITE KID vs TIGER MASK 4/21/83 10/10 -- The best of the series imo as it's easily the most emotional. A terrific ending that does give you a suitable conclusion to the seriesbut still leaves you with the biggest "what if" in wrestling history. RICKY STEAMBOAT & JAY YOUNGBLOOD vs SGT SLAUGHTER & DON KERNODLE JCP 03/12/83, Cage Match 8/10 -- Very, very good cage match. I also really enjoyed the prematch contract signings. 1986 1987 RICKY STEAMBOAT vs MACHO MAN 1987 MAPLE LEAF GARDENS 9.1/10 -- Excellent match from Maple Leaf Gardens which I think occured in 1987. HULK HOGAN vs ANDRE THE GIANT WRESTLEMANIA III 8.5/10 -- Awesome match between two legends. The bodyslam heard round the world. RICKY STEAMBOAT vs MACHO MAN WRESTLEMANIA III 6.5/10 -- Two counts! 1988 RICKY STEAMBOAT vs RICK RUDE ROYAL RUMBLE 6/10 -- Good solid bout 1989 Rip Rogers vs Terry Taylor WCW 9.8/10 Im not sure of the date of this at all but it is one of my favourite matches of all time. I'm a mark for everything here. 2 undercard cards fighting a competitive match but yet there's still hierachary. (lease forgive the spelling of that word) Everything looks really rough with the lighting adding to the effect. This is something I always preffered over the non imposing lighting of the WWF at the time. And I love cheering for Rip Rogers! He should've been world champion.. I always wanted to see the Pillman matches from WCW. BRIAN PILLMAN/BRUCE HART vs MIDNIGHT COWBOYS aka RIP ROGERS and STAMPEDE 1989 7.1/10 -- JIP big time but it's enough to show a really fun match. Pillman and Rogers both shine in this one with Pillman bringing some insane heigth (Pillman had already been having a lot of injury problems in Stampede) to his flying moves and Rogers working a smart match. CACTUS JACK vs NORMAN THE LUNATIC aka MAKAHN SINGH aka a million other identities WCW 7.1/10 -- I've only seen limited Cactus Jack from his initial? run in WCW. Here he gets a lot of offense and proves that he can put a match together at this stage of his career. The very charasmatic Makahn Singh is always capable and proves here that he knows what he's doing too. He deserves much more than being remembered as Bastion Booger. 1990 STEINERS vs NASTY BOYS Halloween Havoc 90 9.2/10 -- 2 tough teams just go out there and obliberate each other. The Steiners just look like they're from another world here if you're just used to watching the WWF. This is the best Nasty Boys match I've ever seen. But it's just not stiffness here. The match is put together well. 1991 ULTIMATE WARRIOR vs MACHO MAN RANDY SAVAGE Career vs Career 9.9/10 -- This is one of the matches that really stirs me up emotionally. The ending with Savage just crawling out of the ring is epic. I don't know if the WWE will ever be able to top the angle afterwards which is helped tremendously by the match preceding it. TED DIBIASE vs VIRGIL SUMMERSLAM 9.5/10 -- Very emotional. This was years in the making. CACTUS JACK vs KENTA KOBASHI ALL JAPAN 6/10 -- The offense is what gets this match up here. Really good match energy on a fam cam. All Cactus Jack fans should make sure to check out the ending on this one. 1992 RICKY STEAMBOAT vs RICK RUDE BEACH BLAST IRONMAN 9.1/10 -- What a bout that managed to put both men over. The ending was especially great with Steamboat surviving an excellent sleeper spot by Rude and than getting the pinfall. Than Rude wrestles "face like" in a last bit high paced desperation effort to tie the hockey game up which is what this felt like at the end. Ending gets a lot of points for being unique and smart. BRET HART vs RODDY PIPER WRESTLEMANIA VIII 8.9/10 -- Rare face vs face match at the time with some nice storytelling. I love the ringbell spot BRIAN PILLMAN vs Z-MAN WRESTLEWAR 92 7.1/10 -- Nice match and a good atmosphere. I loved seeing the crowd have sustained heat for a match with the Z-Man since I always was a fan. NIKITA KOLOFF/RICKY STEAMOBAT vs DR. DEATH STEVE WILLAMS/TERRY GORDY 6.2/10 -- For the most part, one of the most realistic matches I've ever seen. Dr. Death always has these awesome looking amatuer exchanges with his opponents wether it's with Steamboat, Koloff or Kawada. Sting/Steamboat/Windham/Rhodes vs Rude/Arn/Eaton/Zbyszko, WCW Saturday Night 02/22/92 6/10 -- What I enjoyed about this is how well everyone had their roles down pat in this bout. There is no noticable weak link here in the ring. This brings me back to the days where I was an absolute WCW and New Japan fanatic. 1994 CHRIS BENOIT vs GREAT SASUKE JCUP 94 9.8/10 -- A different feel than the Lyger match earlier in the night and appropiately so. An epic way to end the tournament JUSHIN LYGER vs GREAT SASUKE JCUP 94 9.8/10 -- This is one of my favourite puroresu matches and is their best match together by a long shot. Great underdog battle here with exciting action all the ways through. Looove the much talked about ending which actually adds to the match. GREAT SASUKE vs EL SAMURAI JCUP 94 9/10 -- The ending sequence enthralls me especially with Sasuke's talking to the reff at the end which makes the match seem so competitive, real and important Bret "The Hitman" Hart vs 1-2-3 Kid 07/11/94 9/10 -- Bret defends the title in a beautifully told story where the upstart 123 Kids attempts to take the title away from Bret. MISAWA vs KAWADA 6/3/94 8.3/10 -- If you're reading this, odds are you know about this match! 1995 CHRIS BENOIT vs GEDO JCUP 95 9.8/10 -- To me the best match of the tournament. I looooved Gedo's selling here of the match he just want through. Gedo crawls through the tournament by the skin of his teeth by getting "lucky" each time. First against Caras and now against Benoit. Fluke move at the end, a controversial 3 count and every mark/smark is cursing Gedo upside down. I really liked Gedo in this tournament. CARAS vs GEDO JCUP 95 9/10 -- Gedo heels it up and I love it. Always a mark for Caras' submission moves. BRIAN PILLMAN vs JOHNNY B. BADD FALL BRAWL 95 9/10 -- Face vs face battle where Pillman turns eventually turns into a heel for the match. I love the match finish as it's a fav spot of mine but also how it perfectly into what they were doing Bret Hart vs Hakushi Raw 7/1995 9/10 -- Memories, this was the match that reminded me of how awesome Bret Hart could be. I enjoyed it as much as the KId match. The spot that has forever stayed with me is Bret deciding he can fly too and does that awesome rope aissisted splash from the ring apron to the floor. Space Flying Tiger Drop! 2000 KOBASHI vs AKYIMA 12/2000 8.5/10 -- I enjoyed the long fought out battle here. Make sure to check out Kobashi's eye at the end of this. Ouch! 2004 SAMOA JOE vs CM PUNK III ROH 7/10 -- Really good match here and one of my favourites from ROH. The work around the sleeper was pretty cool. 2007 Chris Benoit vs MVP Backlash 8.7/10 -- It's hard to talk about any Benoit matches. This was a great match and I can't help but give any match that has the highspot of the flying splash only to be met by the knees a high mark Chris Benoit vs MVP Judgement Day 9.3/10 -- My kind of match. The fans unfortunately didn't bite into it like they could have but still put together really well. It had a chance for me to be absolutely epic if it had gone on longer. Still a fitting end as this set up another rematch but unfortuanately they didn't get to finish the series. Fit Finlay vs Ric Flair Smackdown 6/10 -- Really good little match and this makes it because I love how Flair gets revenge on Finlay for attacking his leg by doing what else? Attacking Finlay's leg! Good way to get the crowd into it. It also looks like Finlay has a new leg submission. Flair has improved since a few years ago but I still think he should retire for his own health.

You know, I was watching some Eddie Guerrero a couple of days ago and I realized there's nobody currently in the WWE who approaches his charisma level. Because of this, I really think they could use Jericho because there's nobody there who has the charisma of him either especially with Michaels and Undertaker gone. That's not saying that others don't have any charisma. Some do.

The Jim Ross Is A Grouchy Hateful Vile Human Being thread
Resident Evil replied to Loss's topic in Megathread archive
Yeah, I remember years ago telling my brother the same thing. I've also mentioned this on boards here and there. "Proof" to people in the know that the WWF/WWE promotes drug use. In Ross' defence, he was just probably telling Jones the truth and that's actually not a bad thing. He also might not have known that he was telling Jones to go on the juice but I'm skeptical on that. -
The round thing bugs me too though it can work. It breaks the flow of a match and hurts heat segments. I've also seen it screw up what the wrestlers were doing by having the end of the round end. There were two matches around this time but there was also an earlier match from 1981? that's available.

I should know better than to compliment Lance Storm. Apparently you can be drug free and still an idiot. http://www.stormwrestling.com/072007.html Lance Storm on Marc Mero: Yes it was Mero's steroid use that pushed other wrestlers to put the needle to their ass while the promotion is only guily of not stopping the problem or looking the other way. I agree with Lance here quite a bit. Yes, it was Mero's steroid useage in part that pushed other wrestlers to put the needle in as was all the other wrestlers who did it. He was and they were/are part of the problem. The thing is although wrestling is not a sport where there are wins and losses it does happen to be an extremely physical activity. Moreso than most of the sports out there. Steroids give you an edge to preform this. They give you an athletic edge and allow yourself to take you to the next level. A level that the person who doesn't have roids in him can not reach. That puts them at a disadvantage and is simply not fair. Now of course, wrestling is showmanship as well but the fact remains that it has always been and always will be an athletic spectacle too. meone who is doing it the right route without help is going to feel compelled to take some juice just to keep up. This happens in bodybuilding and sports as well. In wrestling, you also have the problem of lookingbelievable. Steroids also give you the edge there and make you look more the part. So yes, although it's a personal choice it is wrestlers who are taking steroids that are pushing others who might not otherwise do so to take the juice. Lance is not saying the promotion is only guilty of not stopping the problem or looking away. He's saying that the wrestlers are more likely guilty of the problem than the promotion is. That the promotion's biggest problem is perhaps just looking the other way on what the wrestlers would do anyway. This is a tremendous point. The mentality of the people in this business is such that they themselves will take help to get ahead. And trust me, even a good portion of the people who don't want to think of doing it as well. The wrestlers will do it on their own because of the way their brains are wired. However, in saying that promotions like the WWE are a big part of the problem as well. There is no denying that.

Very little but I'm still around. Some people have been talking to me on MSN. I had decreased my posting for awhile now due to some life stress. After the Benoit tragedy I didn't feel like posting too much. I do have a lot of thoughts on the tragedy but I'm not sure if I'm going to go into them on a message board yet. I feel very sorry about what happened. I had actually changed my name on a couple of different boards before the Benoit tragedy due to various reasons and was pondering changing it on all boards. After the tragedy, I thought it'd be best that I changed it everywhere. I still have some boards where I have to change it however.

WON awards front-runners for the first half of the year
Resident Evil replied to Bix's topic in Megathread archive
I think so too. Look at the anti A-Train and anti Scott Norton wrestling fans. There was no racism there but yet they went through the same thing despite both of them being really good workers. Of course, I've always been a mark for the big guys in wrestling but still. I think people who are defending Mark Henry (Who I am a fan of as well) are jumping to the racism card too quickly. -

Resident Evil replied to Bix's topic in Megathread archive
When I saw Jingus posting here, I knew it'd only be a matter of time before he was arguing about Cena with Bix. Jingus would talk about Cena's execution and Bix would retaliate with MOVEZZ!! With wrestling, it's about being believable enough for the person to get wrapped up in it. It's the foundation of the house. Jingus doesn't find Cena believable or buys into him enough to the point where he despises his wrestling. That's fine. Bix finds Cena believable or buys into him enough to the point where he loves his wrestling. That's fine too. -
Benoit misses Vengeance due to family emergency
Resident Evil replied to sek69's topic in Pro Wrestling
I'm sad to hear that Wellington has passed away. He gave me a lot of memories and was one of the first wrestlers that truly made me appreciate wrestling. Let's all hope that Benoit's family emergency will turn out okay. -
Poffo used to wrestle in my hometown so I'll always be a fan of him. I was mostly concentrating on Perfect's perfect dives though so I didn't notice any gay overtones. Now what if we had Poffo vs Rip Rogers? What kind of interviews would set up a match like that?
