Yeah, we have to talk about that too but I was mostly talking about an own organization's fans being divided. Do we give extra credit to a match that drags everyone in and less credit to a match that doesn't even if both matches top fanboys are equally fanatic about their match? We have to ask ourselves the question on why one match doesn't appeal to everyone. What went wrong with one match and what went right with the other match?
-
Of course it can but the question becomes this: Let's take as an example 2 great matches that are watched by the same fan base. To simplify things we'll divide that fan base up into A, B and C. The first match is loved by A,B and C. The second match is equally loved by A, thought of as good to fair by B and eh to bad by C. The love by a good portion of the fans is the same strength for both matches. However, it does not have the universal appeal to the whole fan base. We've seen cases where people are divided like this. Does this mean the second match is as good as the first match? If you're part of group A than yes it does but even than I think you have to give the accolades to the 2nd match for being better because it appeals to everyone which is quite an achievement. Just something to think about.

I too thought the Eddie vs JBL match was a great one but can it be considered one of the truly best WWF matches if there is too much mixed feelings on it? For example, Bret vs Austin at Mania does not get this. I don't want anyone to bash anyone here. It's just something to think about. Speaking of matches from 2004 BENOIT vs HHH Ironman -- Just a few thoughts I recently rewatched this the other night and loved it. It had some faults like when you repeatably see a wrestler charge into the turnbuckle spot only to be met by your opponent's feet. This seemed to be due to the WWE's limiting of moves. Too much interference as well. But outside of the faults, I found myself captivated a lot more this time around. Perhaps it was the French announcers who really seemed to know their wrestling history. They referenced Double A after HHH hit the spinebuster and even brought out Lyger's name. No, that's only part of the reason. It was due to Benoit having one of the best selling performances I have ever seen in the history of wrestling. Benoit was incredible here selling the effect an Ironman match can have on your body. And when you combine that selling with some credible bumps to go along with it than you have something good. Benoit takes some legit career ending bumps here including a suicide dive, a hiptoss on the EDGE of the ring apron!!!! which is a known career ender and a blind chairshot to the back of his head. This on top of a crazy chest first bump into the turnbuckles as well as some other bumps on the outside of the ring. They were all bumps that had importance. One other thing I really liked about this was the change of direction at the end of the match. At that point, the focus switches from attacking Benoit's chest to his head area. A brutal kneeshot, a hit into the post and a chairshot to end all chairshots followed by some punches. In a short period of time, we have made it so that Benoit is once again in a predicament where he's in danger of losing where as if the concentrated attack was still on the chest I don't think it would've worked as well for various reasons. Just watch Benoit's selling in this. If you can get behind that than you're going to find yourself really getting into this. The overall selling over the duration of the match, the selling of the chest after the missed headbutt/going into the turnbuckles chest first, the chairshot sell which is the best I've ever seen, Benoit collapsing after trying to make it back into the ring, the crawling over to HHH for the pin, the after match selling - It's all super. It just feels like a long drawn out battle.

I like Ultimo vs Rey but it's one of the matches I don't get and was shocked to no end when I discovered others liked it so, so much. To me, both Ultimo vs Dean matches destroyed Ultimo vs Rey. The Dean vs Rey series as well.

I too watched that match recently. It was just yesterday that I did so. It is on dailymotion.com Thank you for the memories Bam Bam Bigelow.

Savage vs Ultimate Warrior Career vs Career

I was going to talk about this but I decided not to. I never really meant to do a review. I just wanted to say a couple of comments but than it just kept on growing. -
The Warrior vs Savage from Mania is one of the best pro matches I've ever seen. Savage was the best ever in the WWF for making his matches feel important and epic and this was no different. Of course, things are amplified here because of the career vs career factor at play. Savage through his work ethic, wrestling, selling and body mannerisms was a terrific wrestler. Body language is something I'm big on in wrestling but it's an awful hard thing to describe. But just as one example -- Savage is well known for pointing towards the sky before coming off of the top rope. It's an act that has been copied by almost every fan mimicking wrestling at sometime in their life. It's cool, it adds a ton of importance to a move and it even looks epic because of the bigger than life aura it projects. The movement itself is also very similar to the hardest bodybuilding pose to pull off effectively as you have to have everything developed well to look good with this pose (see Sergio Olivia). Savage has a very good build and he pulls this pose off making himself look even more believable by looking like a supreme athlete to the fans. The lats or what I like to think of as the human wings are spread out for everyone to see right before Savage takes flight. It's a beautiful, awe inspiring sight. Now, it looks like I'm kind of going off here but I'm just trying to emphasize how important body language is in wrestling. Just one movement can mean so much and Savage I feel on an overall basis was as good as anyone has ever been in this department. The match itself is big making everything happen in it even bigger as there is nothing more important than a career; not even the world title. Warrior as a super babyface has never even been closed to being legally pinned before. He is even higher than Hogan in being indestructable. Savage was already a wrestling legend who has always hanged at the top of the card. He is the heel but the result is still up in the air though there is no doubt that Warrior is the odds on favourite by a pretty good margin. Where the match really shines is the ending stretch. Savage ends up hitting 5 top rope elbows against the Warrior. 5 of them when usually 1 is enough except if you're Hulk Hogan. But Warrior's even above Hulk Hogan and almost doesn't even seem human. He survives it and ends up hitting the press slam followed by a splash. The press slam, not only another visually and physically epic move but a move so protected that only one person in history survived it. However, that was Hulk Hogan, a guy who Savage could never, ever beat no matter how many times he tried. When I'm watching Savage up in the air like that, all I can think about is how the career of one of the all time greats is about to come to an end. Years of effort about to go down the drain with his former manager (adding even more emphasis and emotion as if this match needed any more to every move in the ring) Savage as a heel has no chance now. No heel really ever kicks out of a top face finishing move back in the day. But at Wrestlemania and on the biggest/most important day of his wrestling life Savage does the impossible. He breaks perhaps the singe biggest rule in the WWF by kicking out of a face's finisher move. Something he could not do against Hogan but yet in the face of his career being wiped away kicks out of a finisher from a wrestler that is even above Hogan. Words can't describe how much that nearfall means to me or how shocking it was. It's the kind of nearfall that can't be replicated and at this point I'm often already at the point of tears. There aren't too many matches that have that kind of effect on me. From there on it's superb as well. Savage is unbelievably great at selling fatigue here so we never forget how devastating Warrior's military press slam really is. He gets himself another chance and in a desperate attempt to put away the man who survived 5 elbow drops tries to crush Warrior's throat? on the guardrail. But Savage's desperation turns against him with a sick hit of the guard rail and in yet another great selling bit by Savage we see his own career right than and there pretty much evaporate. Savage is for all intents and purposes out. However, he still has the instinct to survive and repeatably just tries to go out to the floor after being shoulderblocked by Warrior. This is the part that truly gets to me as we see Savage not being able to do ANYTHING at all but still wants to go. He still wants to wrestle and keep going on but it is all for naught and essentially hopeless perhaps even due to his own desperate action. Thinking of Elizabeth watching her former man go through all of this at the end makes it all the more emotional. In the end the Warrior covers Savage like he was nothing which is a boost to his charactor as well. What a match. An epic emotional bout that made both the Warrior along with Savage look strong, told a story and set the seeds for Savage to turn face leading to one of the most emotional wrestling angles of all time. Star ratings don't give this match justice. This is why I watch wrestling.

In his earlier days I don't think Baba looked fake. I only think it was afterwards that he did so. Even than I never minded him. He was a wrestler just wrestling for the love of the game and I appreciated that.

I would like access to both folders please. A PM has been sent as of today, January 16th. Thanks. PM'd you. -- Loss, 01/16

Michaels has always been very good though at not looking simulated with his body language inside the ring. One of the big reasons for his popularity imo.
-
I love how Bret Hart often holds himself up in the ring by draping his arms around the ropes.

I have mixed feelings on Punk. On one hand I don't like some of his matches against Eddie and vs Joe II but I really liked Punk vs Joe III and a tag match there I saw in OVW where I thought he did a really good job. I get the simulation feeling too but I also get the "feeling" that Punk takes pride in his work and wants to be a great hand. I like that. I also like the fact that he sticks out with his straight edge gimmick and his tatoos so I'm hoping that he has a good future ahead of him. Still haven't seen enough of his work though. I think he's a good hand. This was fun but man, you have to check out Benoit vs Guerrera from Worldwide. Just an incredible 4 minute match.

That sounds great guys. About the handheld talk -- If the match is good enough than it has to be included. Personally, if it's shot well enough than I like them even better than anything on Tv simply because A)it's a different perspective B)You have that great feeling of watching something you're not supposed to be watching and C)hearing the crowd reaction from the arena seats. There are matches I feel that come off better on handheld rather than TV. Lyger vs Benoit from 8/92 immediatly comes to mind as you have better heat, a beautiful shot of the ring and an excellent view of the finish which comes off better on handheld. And with the 5 minute Nitro or other WCW program matches -- A few of them do have to be included because there were some doozys here and there on the program.
-
Very good point there. It's hard to derive anything concrete from this match because of the drunk factor.

Dusty Rhodes Charasma galore. Bob Backlund I still can't get over the strength he had. A controversial wrestler when discussing quality. I'm in the camp that he was a very good wrestler. He has managed to be in several great bouts against Hogan, Bret and Adonis Dump Matsumoto She was the best heel she possibly could've been at the time. What more can you ask for? Atlantis Want to see more. I love the Mask vs Mask bout with the excellent wrestler that is Villano III Jim Breaks He reminds me of Johnny Smith somewhat so of course I'm a fan. The kind of wrestler you want on a roster. I'd like to see him in a time warp and see how the fans would react to him today Sgt. Slaughter Always been a fan of the Sarge. I just always thought he was a good wrestler. Adrian Adonis Great wrestler. He had a smart mind in the ring. CM Punk I appreciate his devotion to his drug free stance since I've done the same thing. Roddy Piper One of a kind. He has never been replicated and I don't think he ever will Randy Savage Very good wrestler who I believe was able to connect well with the entire crowd base through his charisma, his distinct interviews, ring attire and his before mentioned wrestling ability. One of the cornerstones in keeping the WWF as strong as it was. After Hogan and Andre, he might have been the biggest name. -
Benoit vs Villano III Mask vs Mask Bout -- One of Benoit's best ever?? The first time I ever watched this, I was disapointed. I really liked the other Benoit vs Villano III bouts and I enjoyed this one too but I expected more. Than my buddy took a look at the match and really enjoyed it. I decided to give it another look and this time I loved it. The first time I saw this, I don't think I was paying enough attention. Due to the video, I didn't even notice that Villano III was bleeding. I also thought the moves were more random than they were. Watching it the second time, I noticed the moves were not random at all. It's a truly great bout and I think it passes even the Lyger vs Pegasus mask vs mask bout. The matwork in the beginning is very cool with all sorts of neat holds and counters. It's not random matwork either as one person or the other will beat down the other for awhile. Benoit gets some suspense in too hitting a submission and a similar submission that got him victories in the past. From there, the bout kicks into high gear with Villano suffering an abdominal injury as well as a head injury. And that's what Benoit concentrates on for pretty much the rest of the bout. He's in total rudo mode playing to the crowd, throwing Villano's head into the cement and taking control of the bout by hitting Villano in the stomach. There's some real nice work here with Benoit coming off the middle rope and hitting Villano in both the stomach and the head at the same time. Another great moment was when Benoit threw Villano outside of the ring, put his head into the ringpost, threw him back in the ring and than put a figure four headlock submission hold on (which I believe was more effective here than in Japan) . Just excellent work there and a move that made perfect sense. The bout ends with Benoit seemingly changing direction due to Villano's fighting spirit and some oneupmanship. Terrific ending to the bout as well. I realize I'm mostly talking about Benoit here but Villano was super here and it's easily visible that he has a terrific mind for wrestling. So yeah, give this match a watch. The once super rare bout is now on youtube so check it out. They cut out interviews, some past highlights, in studio discussion and the brief second fall but the rest is still there so it's not too bad. I think it's one of Benoit's better bouts. _________________

Tully Blanchard Classic heel and the type that can't be cheered. For that, I give him his props Akira Taue Taue is the man. The "little train" that could. Because of that, he has amassed very hardcore fans Aja Kong The woman. Negro Casas Want to see more of him in Mexico. I like his Japan work. Dynamite Kid Perhaps the best ever. Sooo natural in there.I love his top moments in Stampede where he physically probably had the roughest go of it that a wrestler has ever had. He was already hurt even before he went to the WWF. Oh yeah, and perhaps the best heel ever. HHH -- Overrated and underrated at the same time. The match with Flair at Survivor Series was awesome. Has had a very negative effect on the WWF overall. Takeshi Morishima -- The potential is definitely there. Without a doubt. Finlay -- If I could borrow a phrase, he is the "anti ROH" and I love him for that. What a wrestler should be. Mistico -- Haven't seen too much Edge -- Sooo refreshing to see a top heel besides HHH. Very good at it too. -
None of us have done any video shoot interviews yet.
