Resident Evil's Thoughts on Wrestling AND Life
Resident Evil replied to goodhelmet's topic in Pro Wrestling
Yeah, I was a big fan of the 2nd version of the show when it came out. It's the type of show where I can sit down, watch any episode they have on TV and enjoy it. It doesn't even matter how many times I watch it. I loved it when Kermit would go, "Oh Yeah". It might've been my favourite part of the show No, I didn't watch Tim Trax. I don't know if it was on any of the TV channels I had back than. You have peaked my curiosity. -

I think the point is getting missed here. For example, when people think of an open faced chop they think of Flair. While Wahoo and Johnny Valentine did them before Flair, crowds aren't going Wahoo!!!! they are going whooo!!!!! in reference to Flair. Just because someone does something earlier doesn't mean they are known for it. Now to the point I was making. In the Destroyer/Baba bout Destroyer does a great job at hiding the foreign object. When I think of that spot Lawler is the 1st one that comes to mind. So I was wondering how is it that it is great wrestling in the Destroyer bout, but typical phony wrestling by Lawler when he does it. What makes it great when Destroyer does it but not Lawler. I could understand if Lawler did it poorly but he is amazing at it by the heat he generates from it. To be honost with ya, I don't even remember the foreign oject in the Destroyer/Baba match. I remember the match most of all so in the grand scheme of things it doesn't look like the foreign object played a big part in the match. I tend to dislike typical heel hides the foreign object bits with an exception here and there. I have seen Lalwer do this before and to me it seemed to be more of the focus of the match. I also thought Lawler looked goofy doing it like I always find him. However, if it got the Memphis crowd riled up than good for him. -

What is it about Japanese crowds that you like so much? The way they tend to interact with the match gives extra importance on what's happening inside the ring. Personally, that's what I find. -

Yes, that is correct. You're learning young one, you're learning. I have no idea what paint chips taste like. Paint maybe?? You don't realize that I'm far older than you are? Are you one of those weird Calgary fans who think that the shit they watched was "realistic" and apply that to all other wrestling? Are you one of those wackos who thought everything in WWF was Vince hype EXCEPT his whole "dungeon, excellence of execution, best ever, Calgary" promotional horseshit? Does it grate you that Vince carnied Old Stu out of his business, but he could never put Memphis out of business? What's the preferrable way for a wife to submit to her husband? Unconcious after being dosed and getting rammed up the ass or becoming an old cat woman who looks on as she regrets her life as a brood mare for a sadistic imbecile? Why do dogs have cold noses? A)Yes, I realise you are older than I which was part of the reason why I wrote down "young one" B part 1)No but it was obvious the style was rougher and closer to reality than a lot of other wrestling B)Part 2 No -- I am someone that since he was a little 2 year old kid would think for himself. As far as the Bret stuff goes, I'm not exactly sure what youi're getting at there. The Dungon was more than real, Gorilla was the one who started excellence of execution which Bret obviously was as that was always part of his appeal and the best ever bit was logical in WWF land along wit it being smart marketing. Being from Calgary in WWF "US land" was part of Bret's appeal and helped make him stand out with extra cool points. Why would that be promotional horsemanure? It's smart promoting with its basis in reality. C)No, it doesn't grate me in the least that Vince carnied Old Stu out of his business. If Stampede was run better things could've been a lot different. A lot of it was thier own fault. Why would I want Memphis to go out of business? I don't like the wrestling but I don't want people to lose their jobs. People had lost interest in Memphis anyway compared to the old days once time went by. D)I'm not a believer in anal sex at all. Anybody who does anything to make their woman unconcious is not a true man. A man is supposed to be a man and protect their woman. E)Mother Nature -

I was a Fujiwara fan before it became cool to do so. Guy rules it and I'm glad to see he's getting more recognised now. Ditto with Andre who I was singing the praises of years ago. Yeah, there are other phony styles of wrestling. Sometimes WCW would have some more specifically in their tags. Lucha I really like though I prefer some other forms of wrestling. I also have to be careful in selecting what matches I watch. That being said, I'm so glad Lucha exists because it gives us a unique form of wrestling to watch. Atlantis vs Villano III mask vs mask was incredible. I can't really watch it as much as say puroresu because A)I like puroresu's style better 2)I much prefer Japanese commentary over Spanish commentary due to Japanese being easier on the ears seemingly and C) I like how the crowd interacts with the wrestling better in Japan. Japan crowds are my fav from anywhere. Euro style I like too. -

Destroyer and Lawler were never hardcore enough to grow a beard to hide foreign objects in. They never walked around everywhere with a knife in their boot either.* *IIRC, that might not be accurate. -

Hmmmm..... I would have to take another view at it again. I remember not forming any thoughts positive or negative about this angle. I just remember thinking we got an angle going here. Of course, angle wasn't in my vocabulary than. Back than, I was a Badd fan as I thought he was a good hand. Payne I liked too because of his Fujiwara armbar. -

That depends, did they bust a nut while achieving physical exercise intensity? If you want, I can teach you how to do it but it won't come easy. -

Singh was terrific on the mike in Stampede and was very comical at times. Quick witted and he was awesome as a heel in the announce booth with Whalen. It was pretty cool seeing him marking out during some of Smith and Benoit's classic Stampede matches. I loooved how he was such a big fan of Johnny Smith or how he'd put over Owen Hart so strongly even though he was a heel and had feuded with him. He does have some really strong matches on his resume .At least a couple with Owen and some tags too. I remember a great one I think with Jason (AWESOME gimmick), Singh, Benoit and -- ah man --I can't remember Singh's partner right now. He had a very good Worldwide? match with Cactus Jack too in I believe Jack's initial run in WCW. Norman's gimmick was kind of fun. The Booger gimmick was horrible and I know Singh didn't like it. -

Physical exercise intensity can be evaluated. Yes, even if wrestling is an exhibition. Are you telling me people aren't working in the ring since everything is fake? I can not attest to the Torture Rack's effectiveness but I have heard that when applied correctly it can be really painful. Anyway, back than when Luger was this muscled up invinclible like superman I bought into the torture rack as a finisher. I thought it looked awesome, painful and I liked how it showed Luger was a strongman by hoisting his oppenents up, keeping them there and jumping up and down. Alex Wright didn't come into the WCW for about 4 years afterwards. Lyger's costume was freaking awesome and it is part of what gives him his appeal to the audience. I don't find it silly in the least. Myself, I thought it was pretty cool. Yeah, Johnny B. Badd's gimmick was pretty silly but at least it was fun. -

I know. It's just a friendly tease back for him teasing me about Lawler. When you do say "Lawler like spots" it does sound like you're giving credit for the spots to Lawler though. -

As Kermit from Kung Fu The Legend Continues would go, "Oh yeah" The Destroyer/Baba bout is insanely awesome wrestling and it is a match that should be on any aspring wrestler's tape/dvs collection for studying. If anyone reading this hasn't seen this match go see it now or as DVDVR would say go see it yesterday! I'm a big, big fan of the Destroyer and I actually think his "comedy" stuff is charming. I would also reccomend the Destroyer vs Rikidozan match I caught on youtube awhile back. Destroyer learned those spots form Lawler? -

Mankind is awesome. He's the kind of guy the WWE desparately needs today. I have nothing but great things to say about him. One of the best interviews of all time, terrific gimmicks, very hard worker, intelliegent, super bumper and he knows how to put a match together with all sorts of different wrestlers. I actually cheered for him against Owen Hart. Not because I didn't like Owen (Owen rules!) but I wanted confirmation of Mankind going further up the ladder Foley's physique works for him. Not everyone should have an athletic look as you need people to stand out. Variety is the spice of life. The most important thing anyway is heart and Foley had it. His heart transcended his physique. So once people see that, the heart bit actually sticks out more in comparison to an identical wrestler who was muscled out of his mind. -

After watching it strongly for over a year and loving it, I got really tired of the silliness. I wanted more of a sportish feel to my wrestling. Seeing I believe how the intercontinental title switched hands due to said silliness made my heart sink. I noticed that the NWA/WCW had a lot less silliness and was more serious overall so I took to that more and watched mainly that. When I saw some of the WCW/New Japan Starrcade card my mind was blown as it was what I wanted out of my wrestling and more. I couldn't believe the difference in quality. That being said, it was mainly Bret Hart that kept my interest in the WWF alive. He was one of my favs despite not being pushed hard I thought he was special, innovative, hard working and just plain out cool. The incredible Summerslam tilte switch between Demolition and the Harts singlehandidly kept my interest in the WWF alive. When Bret won the IC tilte it peaked my curiosity and hapiness but when he won the world title title it brought me back into the WWF. I still remember catching the last seconds of I believe a Superstars Saturday afternoon show and trying to figure out if the impossible had happened (and that really did feel impossible back than) and Bret had won the title. Later on that night, I did see him as champ on another show and it was one of the best feel good moments I ever had in wrestling. From there on, I watched the WWF more until he lost it to Yokozuna who in turn lost it to Hogan at Mania which for several reasons was probably my most disheartning moment tilte change I ever saw. I was never more disgusted with the WWF booking wise and I took a break from it. It wasn't long though as Bret brought me back in. From there, I enjoyed the product andwatched it to Bret got screwed and than gave it up because I hated what they did to Bret (I could relate to it with my own life) and I HATED the attitude era with a passion. In 2000 I came back because of the radicals. The product had other entertaining stuff as well so it was fun overall even though I liked a more serious side to my wrestling. Eddie and Nancy/Daniel/Benoit dying did get me away from the product. I wasn't watching too much than anyway but after that I stopped. So yeah, a lot of stoppages and restarts. Maybe 2005 was when I stopped following it as closely. -

Yes, I know some people see it like that which is unfortuante but look at it this way. It's impossible to fake intensity in the wrestling ring. He does work hard at displaying that but truth be known that is a 100% proven tatic to pump yourself up. It's similar to the thought process of what a lot of successful people do to try to take themselves to the next level. Perhaps try thinking about it that way. -

I don't watch enough WWE these days to compare him to 5 other wrestlers there. I don't dislike the WWE but I don't find it interesting enough to watch except for the odd matches here and there which sound intriguing. From what I've seen, he looks great compared to the rest of the roster. I'm also happy to see that he's shaken the "imitation indy wrestler" label he had among some internet fans and has become himself American Dragon or Daniel Bryan now as he is called. I saw the match with Jericho which was very good. I thought both wrestlers helped to make that one. His charisma especially now with the storyline they had going for him is underrated. The match with the Miz was very good to great and is my pick for WWE Moty from what I've seen. I thought he looked awesome in the big Nexus vs WWE tag when he was announced as the suprise entrant. He's going to remind the fanbase of Benoit which is a scary "coincidence" since I am worried about the amount of concussions Danielson has suffered. I did hear the WWE has neurological testing now to some degree so that is good. -

It is undeniable that it hurt him yeah. It is to his credit his presence that I previously mentioned helped him so strongly in ECW to overcome his heigth. He also had the ECW booking to help him out. When he was in the WWF, his shortness became more apparant and would become more of an issue. Still, it was the booking and the arrival/focus of the Radicals that hurt Tazz. I believe that with strong booking he would've kept his bad ass persona in the WWF even in the land of the giants. He certainly started out strong defeating Angle where he was incredibly over. -

Your posts and attitude towards everyone is typical bully pick on others to feel good about yourself garbage. I like Mantell. I'm mostly familiar with him through his WCW and WWF work though and not Memphis. See, the thing with Richards is this. You can't fake intensity in life. You can't fake heart, you can't fake drive and you can't fake passion. Wrestling is full of people like this because it's a tremendously hard profession not only to just make it but to thrive in. Wrestling is home to some of the strongest willed achievers you will ever find on this planet. I am great at spotting people who have IT in the department. In other words, the eye of the tiger. Love him or not, Richards is among the elite of the elite in this department. You also see it in his other pursuits in life such as being a paramedic. So when he tries so hard to pump himself up, it is a natural (and proven) technique and extension of who he is as a person. Scott Steiner would do it after a tilt a whirl slam. For people who realise what passion and intensity truly is, they know it is guys like Kobashi, KENTA or Davey Richards. It is realistic for guys like them to be able to do what they can. It also makes it realistic and more believable that he can survive and go 100 percent like he does. On a physical scale, almost nobody could duplicate his physical ability in the ring. So that's what makes Richards realistic. -

Tazz was an underrated commentator in the WWE. He always had at the very least a good presence and at times a terrific one in ECW. I liked his offense overall. His matches didn't have as strong a structure as the greats did but I thought he was a little bit underrated in the ring too. A strong hand to have on your roster. I was very impressed with his match with Kurt Angle at the Rumble which I rewatched recently. I honostly forget what happened with Taz. IIRC, there was some kind of sexual claim against him that wasn't proven either way? I have no clue here -

Awesome Idea! Fav match? Fav style? Underrated workers? Fav video game? Toughest worker? Ask away! -
An antismark is you. Classic case. You love mediocrity and pump it up to the moon and than cry and knock down those who love to achieve. If it were the video game world you would diss Zelda and than pump up some average video game. You would say something like "I can list 2000 games better than The Legend Of Zelda a Link to the Past" Than you post some garbage made up reasons, try to walk around like it is fact and tell everyone else they don't back up their opinions and are wrong when they all disagree. I'm an anti antismark. I fight the good fight. S.L.L. , Bix, Phil Shneider too are anti smarks though they all have their differences. Jingus isn't.
-
I like DVDVR but let's be honost. It's well known to be the home of anti smarks and followers. It's contrarian to the max to the point where it is often made fun of at other boards. And I never paid any attention to that poll since I didn't care besides voting for Savage who I thought was awesome in Memphis. His speed, body language, intensity, promos, presence and punches were the best. It doesn't matter where they occur. It's still horrible. And I don't think that Memphis was full of guys with terrible punches. Savage for instance had awesome punches. You have something against Misawa's wrestling ability? Why? Guy was fantastic So? Big deal. It wasn't part of his regular like arsenal like Lawler's was. The move is one of the nonsensical moves in wrestling history It all depends. I am usually a fan of guys who take big bumps. Yeah, but it's a pet peeve of mine if not done right. The question was about personal pet peeves, not "reliable" ways to get heat. You got Lawler in the 90s working outside of Memphis as a joke wrestler doing his comedy/joke stalling and than not having any talent in the ring to back it up with. It's not like Johnny Smith in 89 who would go out and stall but than have the talent to back it up in the ring. Yes I hate Memphis style because it does use other things that American wrestling uses. It doesn't matter where it happens at. Stampede I had a lot of problems with too but there hardcore NHL tough style like wrestling was better overall to me so I could still enjoy the product. Don't know why you find that funny but Memphis style takes way less thought to do and as a result it is not as satisying to watch. I like matches where I can see the wreslers thinking and achieving. Russel would take a long time to talk about. Whalen too who is one of the more fascinating commentators. Predicability is one of the problems with North American wrestling. You can just see it more in Memphis. For things to become more meaningful again you have to break away from predicability before going back to it again. It's human nature. Memphis isn't part of the equation here. I know what Dylan likes in matches and was making a point that Richards can wrestle that way better than any of his favs can if he so chose to. If you honostly do not think that people hold Bruce Lee fights and Piper vs David in They Live in higher regard than 99% of movie/TV fights out there than I do not what to say. They Live's fight is tributed and talked about to this day as one of the best, most realistic ever. Bruce Lee as everyone knows is beloved by all. Once again, people tribute Lee all the time. He is a legend. You can't contrarian yourself out of this one. The difference between Lee and other fights is roughly the equivalent of Japanese wrestling to Memphis. Yeah, you have brainwashed yourself to a degree in believing that. It doesn't say much about the viewers of Lawler if they can be so easily duped into believing what he is doing and letting themselves get emotionally tied to it. Lawler comes off as a dangerous phony conman in real life .I've seen one f the Lawler vs Dundee matches. . I have seen Kobashi, Kawada and Misawa along with tons of others have a million matches better than Lawler vs Dundee. You know how people give auras or vibes? Lawler is one that likes sexually underage kids or childeren which has been proven by commentary. His overall phoniness with everything has been exposed there too. Maybe Lawler doesn't sexually abuse children, maybe he does. I don't know but I do know he gives off that same vibe that I feel from others who I know are sexually evil.
-
Oh come on, dude, that's a total copout. You don't have to go back and watch anything. You can't come up with a single solitary memory of a match, angle, interview that you found to be eye rollingly bad? Bret's comments about it coming off phony echo mine. I watch wrestling for the fighting spirit ever sinceI was a young lad watching the WWF. I never was into the bad guy vs good guy thing. I liked the sport aspects of wretling. Years ago, I watched when Bret and Owen went down to Memphis to wrestle I believe Lawler and Jarrett. Even before the match occured, I knew the match would be toned down, basic, predictable and boring face vs heel structure wise. There would be nothing to stimulate my brain match structure wise. It would be toned down from even the WWF match structure which in turn was "toned down" from the WCW which was a step down from Japan. I was right. The match did nothing for me. I'm not even dissing Lawler here and I was actually a fan of Jarrett. Jarrett I liked. I blame a lot of the match's problems on Memphis structure and the King's phoniness. Pet Peeve #2 -- When a wrestler turns from face to heel they automatically go from exaggerated babyface to exaggerated heel at the tip of a hat complete with the fake begging off at the knees bit. Pet Peeve # 3 -- Heels begging off at their knees Pet Peeve #4 -- Basic tag structure always being the same and predictable. You need to change it up at times in order to give the basic tag structure more meaning otherwise it starts to mean "nothing" Pet Peeve #5 -- When the hot tag occurs -- heels always having to predictably get destroyed by the faces. Pet Peeves #6 -- Heels setting themselves up for bodyslems by running into them Pet Peeve #7 -- Maybe my worse wrestling pet peeve ever. Heels running into weak, lazy punches that don't even hit after the face gets the hot tag. I was actually watching a good Memphis tag the toher month but this just ruined it. Pet Peeve #8 -- Wrestlers getting their head slammed into the turnbuckle 10 times over and the crowd counting along and it always having to be the face that does it Pet Peeve #9 -- Ditto on the 10 punches in the corner turnbuckle bit Pet Peeve #10 -- Too much emphasis on punching to the point where it doesn't mean anything. Pet Peeve #11 -- Fistdrop from teh second rope Pet Peeve #12 -- Anything in a Jerry Lawler match Pet Peeve #13 -- Stalling when you're not a good wrestler as you don't have anything to bring the fans out of boredom once you get back into the ring Pet Peeve #14 -- Reffs being blind to cheating heels Pet Peeve #15 -- Match structure doesn't take as much thought compared to anything else in the world Pet Peeve #16 -- Heels and faces always having to wrestle a certain way -- only allowed to hit certain moves -- Too predictable and makes things comes off as phony. Things I like -- Macho Man and some of the interviews Who if he wants to can wrestle your style of match better than any of your favs. And in his defense of ur roid accusation, he has no obvious signs of steroids that so many other wrestlers do. Is he on or isn't he? I don't know but there's no obvious signs. It all depends on the person watching it and his/her reactions to it. The emotions it generates. For some it can be great, for others it can be horrible. For me, yeah it is fact, I don't like Memphis wrestling because it is everything I hate about wrestling. For you, it's different. However, with that being said it is pretty obvious that Memphis wrestling can come off as pretty corny when in comparison to other wrestling around the world. Because you love it that way. Don't deny it! The same way any movie/Tv fight is more phony than Roddy Piper/Keith David in They Live or a Bruce Lee fight. Ask anyone what they think is phoniest. You know what the answer is. It's the same thing with Memphis wrestling. You judge wrestling by how it effects its audience -- yes that's true --- but you also judge it by how it effects you. You can also judge how it will fare among people who don't watch it or among wrestling fans who watch different styles. I think Memphis because of its phoniness hurt its growth potential to go beyond what they had. I also think that they would have troubles in other markets outside of Memphis because of this. Yes they got some heat and kudos to them for it but I think they handcuffed themselves as well. I feel sorry for you here. You have no natural instinct to warn yourself of sexual predators or people that just come off as phony in life. Your mind and emotions also can't seem to comprehend what makes Sayama vs Kid so incredible for me and the fans back than. You're missing out and I feel bad for you over that. It is legit one of the best matches ever. And while I'm on a roll -- Pro Wrestling = MMA
