Da Meltz still knows his wrestling. Good to hear him fighting the good fight for Richards vs Black as the more publicity that match gets the better. What an incredible year for Richads. It's nice to see him get #2 for outstanding wrestler of the year but from what I've seen (and I didn't see everyone so someone could be better) he was the #1 wrestler this year.

[1996-02-26-WWF-Raw] Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels & Roddy Piper

I still remember watching this from 1996. I obviously loved the segment because it's still in my memory. Personally, it did a great job for me in setting up Wrestlemania XII -
[1996-02-05-WCW-Nitro] Randy Savage vs Chris Benoit
Resident Evil replied to Loss's topic in February 1996
IIRC, I do believe I did hear once that Savage wanted Benoit pushed. Given Savage's personality outside the ring and his wrestling style, that makes sense.- 10 replies

Bret has a very strong confident charisma about him.

As a big fan of Michaels and Bret back in the day and someone who was closely following the product, I KNEW and felt in my heart it was going to be 0 vs 0 and that there would be an overtime period with Michaels probably winning. To me, that was the only way the match could've gone given their personalities, the storyline and the timing of the Ironman stipulation coinciding with their careers. I would not have bought have a match where each got falls on each with perhaps the exception of roll ups (Scratch that, I wouldn't buy roll up pins either). It would contradict what and who they were -- even the heart of the Ironman match itself as once you start having lots of falls in an Ironman match the idea behind the Ironman (Helps show the fans these guys are the toughest wrestlers alive) gets diluted some. We can argue on wether have multiple falls equals more stars in a wrestling match but than the specialness of this match contradicts everything and gets lost.

[1996-06-23-WWF-King of the Ring] Steve Austin vs Marc Mero
Resident Evil replied to Loss's topic in June 1996
I just remember this match as being awesome at the time but I didn't have it on tape so I never watched it since. I thought it was well structured. I always really liked Mero as a worker. -
[1996-08-10-WCW-Hog Wild] Chris Benoit vs Dean Malenko
Resident Evil replied to Loss's topic in August 1996
If you listen to the crowd before teh boos, you will notice there are some cheers before they get overwhelmed which I found interesting. The match itself I loved being a workrate fan. It's a very interesting match to look at and think about structure wise. It is also one of the most insane muscular/cardio physcial tests I have ever seen in wrestling. Benoit at this point was one of the most conditioned guys of all time in wrestling. Malenko has to be given props to him too because he worked his butt off.- 18 replies

One of my favourite parts of this match\was the ending of the match right before the overtime period. Bret Hart was all like "I've seen Michaels in this spot before come up short. He does X (forget exactly what it was) and than he makes a mistake. Than you capatalize on it" That's exactly what happenes when Michaels goes up to the top rope, screws up and than Bret catches him in the sharpshooter. However, Michaels is now too determined and survives his mistake.

Really? Even going back to something 20-30 years after you first watched it? You've never flipped your thoughts on a book or movie or record you liked or hated when you were a kid? There's a lot of stuff that I read or watched in college and enjoyed, and now wonder why the hell I was thinking. The old "I was drunk/stoned/high those years" only goes so far. Or stuff when younger. An example: One of the HD channels just aired the debut of the second season of Charlie's Angles. Late night, wasn't sleeping and just killing time flipping channels until I was tired enough to fall asleep. I came across "Angels in Paradise", the first episode after FFM left and it took me back to the summer of 1977 when it first aired. I was 11, and one of the hot topics of the summer was how they were going to replace FFM, who was the hottest thing of all-time (for that year). So this was some major shit at the time. And of course they replaced here with Cheryl Ladd, who became a big star (relatively speaking) in her own right. I've always held the memory that for us 11 year old boys that was a great freaking pair of episodes, and that on Thursday at school we were buzzing about the awesomeness of them and the newest Angel. Some I'm watching Angels in Paradise, and it's pretty damn bad. Jackie is as classy looking as always. Ladd is kind of spunky, but trying to fit in. Kate Jackson is the "leader", the smart one... but she looks fucking WIRED through the hole episode. So I'm not quite getting it... why was this such a big thing for us back them. So I set the DVR to record the second part the next night, since I had no plans to stay up that late again. And I'm watching that one, and it's about as bad as the first half. The guest stars, working a bad fake Italian mob gimick, are horrible. I forgot to mention it was set in Hawaii, and the locals are written in cringe worthy fashion. I'm really scratching my head. Then comes "rescue" time, since the whole plot of the two-parter was the Charlie had been kidnapped and taken to Hawaii with the Angels going to rescue him. He's being held off shore in a yatch by the mobsters. So rescue time... out at sea... with a boat... And 33 years later, I remember why it was such a big deal to us 11 year old boys and the episode was great: Cheryl Ladd in the rescue section running around the yatch in a bikini looked GREAT~! in a 1977 context for dumb ass kids just figuring out that girls are GREAT~! That the show was pretty weak, really laughable at times didn't matter. It's not what we were watching for. We wanted to check out the New Angel, and she was off the hook. Having rewatched it for the first time in 33 years, I can say: * Charlie's Angels was another weak 70s show that doesn't age too well * it's got a lot of company along those lines * it was hardly the worst of the old T&A TV that it spawned * Cheryl Ladd does look rather exceptional * I greatly underestimated how great Jackie Smith looked in a bikini as well... but Ladd would have been quite distracting to an 11 year old because her strengths were more obvious shall we say, while Jackie is the type you come to appreciate more as you age Okay, so I've drifted away from the topic and risk Will and Loss getting annoyed with this... but there's a point behind the analogy: I think most of us change or opinions on different things over the years. No doubt there are some that were continue to hold and reafirm. But there are always things we wonder "What in the hell was I thinking?" or realize "Ah... that's what I was thinking... yeah, kinda funny." I think the applies to wrestling as well. I'd think you've watched wrestling long enough, RE, for that to have happened on at least some things. Or perhaps give it another ten years. John Nope, no real signifigant changes in my opinions on wrestling. As far as other forms of entertainment, they have stayed pretty consistant as well though my perspective and enjoyment of things have changed some due to various life experiences. Tremendoulsy awesome pic by the way.

[1996-01-05-ECW-House Party] Sabu vs Stevie Richards
Resident Evil replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
I looved this match as I'm a humongous fan of Sabu and a pretty big fan of Richards too. I am kind of surprised that the superkick to end all superkicks was not mentioned here. The way Richards desparately hits it out of nowhere and how Sabu, Styles and Heyman react to it is incredible. It makes you think Richards has a chance at this. Both men become stronger as a result of this match. It is one of the 2 best superkicks of all time. This match was meant to elevate Richards and it did. Great stuff.- 16 replies

Jake Roberts in WCW was my personal favourite debut of all time.

End of career Andre is amazing. I don't think I've ever seen a guy more limited in his ability to move but who made so much of what he had (which was quite a bit, just not conventional). He seemed to know what to do in every second of every match to make a match effective. And his selling and expressions were just great. I think, for instance, the Warrior/Andre SNME match (which I think was WON worst match of the year) was REALLY smartly put together, and don't get me started (again) about the MSG House Show between Colossal Connection and Demos. This post is so good it has made me come out of PWO retirement. End of career Andre was SOOOO underrated. I remember enjoying Warrior vs Andre and Kronus is right. WMIII's main event ruled. I've watched that over 10 times and I could watch it aother 100 easily. As far as the intensity approach goes, it's gotta be legit. There are wannabes out there. But if one does tire of watching too many all out matches, it means they have been watching too much wrestling and need to take a break and do other stuff before coming back again. As for the original quesiton, I've never flip flopped my opinion on anyone. Some I have changed slightly on but flip flopped? Can't think of anyone.

Man, could you just go away? This whole thread has been full of everybody talking about how fun these early episodes of Raw were, and how well all the matches hold up. Nobody is being super negative against anything. You're being a fucking doofus. I have 3 posts in this thread. One was I how loved Double J's gimmick. The other was that Kid vs Razor was classic as it's one of my fav Raw memories. Fun memories. Srry if my mindset doesn't allow me to think insulting someone's parents is cool. Srry that I don't put up with bs. My other point was that Bret in 95 was away from the top of the card and it was annoying for fans of his to see this. Hakushi and Jean Pierre made for some awesome matches but we Bret fans still suffered through a Kiss My Foot match that we didn't want to see. The Kiss Your Foot match was even agreed to be stupid in this thread. Has there ever been a worse stipulation in wrestling? And yes, this is not a negative thread but it is true that this is the most negative board in existence. THINK ABOUT THAT for a second. ThisThat's just not wrestling but any board that has to do with any subject matter. This has been pointed out by others as well. It is a bunch of nerds having to take down people in order to make themselves feel good. I hate it when people have to tear down others in order to pump themselves up. It's the wimpy way out and I will call people out on it for doing it or liking it. I've always been the one to defend people against bullies. No ifs ands or buts about it. There are people who make up lies or distort the truth just to be negative here and than talk like it's fact which is a whole new level of patheticness. I don't want to be part of this board. Ban me please. I don't want to be tempted to stay here. I've never had time anyone to properly discuss anything and there's just too much stuff to correct people on anyway . --- Last post ever here ----

I think it comes from all the times he challenged Flair in the NWA and never won the belt, and now here he is in the WWF challenging for the belt and again coming up short. Looking at it with 2010 eyes where everyone trades wins weekly and belts don't matter, yes it looks silly. In 1993 it made a lot of people think he was a guy who would never win the big one. Plus the whole deal with the balloons and confetti falling from the sky to celebrate a count-out win was so odd, it kind of made him look like a goof for being so excited over an empty win. Yeah, I was going to write down that Luger already had the choke artist reputation from his days going up against Flair but you beat me to it. His rep did hurt him.

That was soooo phony. Bret vs Lawler was easily my worse Bret feud ever. I couldn't wait for it to be over so Bret could stop playing in the mid card and get back to main event status again. It was "go away (kiss my foot anyone?) and let Bret wrestle where he is supposed to again heat" Of course, on a board like here where everyone has to be super negative against everything and everyone, I suppose people could relate to Lawler making fun of somebody's parents and think it rules. Because making fun of people is just sooo cool! (sarcasm)

Was “Stone Cold” Steve Austin ever afraid of being “fired”? Would the threat of firing him keep him from still coming in and beating the heel boss? Even if fired, security would need to be hired to keep Austin away from beating heels. Firing him wasn't going to get rid of him; the only way to get of him was to beat him. That is the logic of wrestling. Compromising by choosing to avoid conflict instead of escalating it is the act of a wimp. Cena is a guy who has fans among women and kids but struggles to appeal to emotionally crippled males like Resident Evil who struggle to mask their fear of women and the vulnerably of childhood. You shouldn't build a fed around appealing to Resident Evil. But the socially inept barely hiding their fear of their impotent weaknesses behind embrace of power fantasies is an important part of the audience. HaHa. Good one. I got a smile out of it Just wanted to note for the record that I like a lof of the qualities Cena has. Some qualities I don't. Austin's character actually had wimpish aspects too. Also, several companies built a fed around appealing to Resident Evil! -

You're obsessed with It's A Wonderful Life S.L.L As a tidbit just for you, on one of the episodes of Batman TAS they reference it in a hilarious comedy spot. Okay, I'm watching a quick summary of the angle here. I like it. I especially liked it when Cena double crossed the Nexus at the end of Raw? The battle Royal with Cena going over the top rope at the end was compelling and interesting but I also must say Yes, it did make Cena look like a wimp. I am using wimp here as definied by mother nature. Yeah, Cena will come through at the end and be a hero. People like to see their heros come back once they see chinks in their armour since they can relate to that (Superman is too hard to relate to sometimes) and it can once again get them to appreciate the hero's efforts. In the end, he will look like a hero unless he goes heel or something but he really did look like a wimp at the end of the royal. They gotta be careful here. Kids, DVDVR smarks and the girls/women all look to him as a hero and seeing how dissapointed they were in the crowd made me think twice about turning Cena wimpy. I wouldn't have wanted the Ultimate Warrior or Bret Hart or Titio Santana to do this when I was a youngster -

Can someone summarsize the Cena angle? Is he acting like a wimp in it? That could be a dangerous thing to do especially since from what I've seen and heard, Cena has for the most part been the opposite of a wimp. -
Yeah, I think they were putting their own spin on it.

Not an in house WWF track, it sucks. Duh. Yeah there is a WWF/WWE bias on the board. Muta in WCW may have been the coolest thing professional wrestling ever did Muta and Gary Hart together may have been the coolest thing professional wrestling ever did. I always loved how Gary Hart was like the Jake Roberts of managers. He would almost never scream and yell, he'd just state how his guy was going to beat the top babyface's ass. Yup, Gary Hart was a great manager for Muta. That reminds me of my fav PWI (or a different mag) story where they talked about Hart having some kind of power over Muta due to some kind of family thing. They weren't sure of the specifics though and it painted Muta as a babyface and a victim. When the magazine asked Muta about it, he didn't say anything about it but looked at them with his sad face before Hart changes the subject. The Great Kabuki and his father was tied into it somehow too. Wish I could remember it. It added to Muta's mystique for me.

It was expected of Hogan to hulk up after getting hit by someones finisher (or a very strong move) back than so I still think the Macho Man would be considered more of a threat to Hogan than almost anyone else out there even after Wrestlemania. Everyone already knew it was obvious that nobody on the roster had anything at all to put Hogan away. There was only one person that did and that was the Warrior. That's one of teh reasons why the Warrior was so special and people got sooo into into the Wrestlemania VI match.

When was the last time you did something productive to give urself happiness instead of having to give yourself pleasure with futile attempts to make fun of someone? Making fun of people is the wimpy way out. Going all out while training is the balls to the wall manly man William Shatner way out.
