Watched the rest of the WrestleCon show. Excalibuar & Marty DeRosa are the announce team on this and they are good. Last 3 matches:
Abyss, Brian Myers, Chris Hero, Drew Gulak, James Storm & Tommaso Ciampa vs. Big Ryck, Colt Cabana, Matt Sydal, The Dudley Boyz & Tommy Dreamer (Bubba Ray Dudley & D-Von Dudley)
What a mixed bag of guys I either don't know, don't like, kinda like and then a few I really like. 12 people seems like too many though. They do a lot of schtick to start this including a funny sequence where Hero does a bunch of kip ups and then trash talks Tommy Dreamer into trying one and...well you don't think he can actually do one do you? I definitely get the "dude wrestling in his underwear" criticism about Gulak, he needs kneepads. Things seem like they are going to get heated as Ciampa comes in and german suplexes Colt and then trash talks Bully Ray and calls him in. Amusingly, Ray tags in D-Von and they set up for a double team move that the crowd things is going to be the 3D but then it isn't and all the heat gets sucked out of the room. I am not excited for the big man/big man matchup of Zeke vs. Abyss but that's because Abyss sucks. If you only knew the push that Zeke got in my TEW game...but I digress. Zeke dominates Abyss but tags out way too quickly for my liking. Tommy takes an atomic drop on the guard rail for what reason I don't know as the set up to him being FIP. Like, this is a crowd that is clearly content with these guys doing goofy shit and taking it easy. I just realized that Brian Meyers is the former Curt Hawkins although it's really not that much higher on the "Who?" scale. Hero is not afraid to elbow and kick old man Tommy Dreamer hard in the face. Colt & Bubba do an amusing deal where they steal each other's spots with Bubba coming in and doing the elbow when Colt does his Dusty Rhodes bit and then Colt holding Gulak for the What's Up headbutt. Things break down into all 12 dudes brawling and then it gets down to only Sydal & Ciampa in the ring. Sydal is still so good at doing those jumping knee strikes. I need to seek out his post-WWE run. Abyss chokeslams Big Zeke and looks like he's on the verge of heart attack after. We get a train of everyone running in and hitting their finisher and it ends with Sydal hitting the Shooting Star Press on the former Curt Hawkins. At least they saved the best finish for last. This was fun honestly and the crowd was definitely happy with it.
AR Fox, Jushin Thunder Liger & Ricochet vs. Roderick Strong & The Addiction (Christopher Daniels & Kazarian)
Wow, The Addiction come out to Iron Man and Kaz has Animal paint and Daniels has Hawk's. Never seen a Roderick Strong match either, at least that I can recall. JVK calling him the default CAW is not really fair off the mark but he's fun being a dick during the entrances and shoving Liger. Ricochet is also Prince Puma who I am more familiar with. I am ok with these guys doing the LOD look but not doing LOD spots and acting like they are not power wrestlers. AR Fox has some really shitty looking gear. Damn as soon as I say that he drills Roddy with a dropkick. AR Fox is going to compete with Andrew Everett as the "king of wasted motion" in this match I can feel it. Kazarian decides to call a time out and then go for a handshake. I would like him being a chicken shit better if he wasn't just pretending to be invincible Animal 3 minutes before. Roderick Strong is not staying in the ring long enough for my liking. AR Fox plays FIP for a long time here and being forced to sell is going to keep him from competing with Evertett's crown like I thought. Fox's "babyface firing up during a submission" face needs work. Ok I'm a Roderick Strong fan now. All his shit looks good and he's a real dick head in this match which always scores points in my book. I could see his backbreaker thing getting played out but I have not seen him do it in 100 matches by now so I don't know, it might not. We get like 100 moves in the finishing stretch that ends with Liger hitting a brainbuster on Christopher Daniels. This was fun, but I would have rather had a more traditional structure to the ending than Fox making the hot tag and then like 3 minutes of everyone doing a shit load of moves. But I knew I wasn't going to get that anyway so I was at least happy they did a long FIP sequence that was quite good.
No Disqualification: Rob Van Dam & Sabu vs. The Hardys (Jeff Hardy & Matt Hardy)
Apparently these two teams faced each other a long time ago "in some shitty bar" which Marty & Excalibur discuss after one of them corrects the other about it being a "first time ever" match. Jeff really likes painting his face. I can only imagine how much he argued about that in WWE because they wouldn't let him do it all the time. I know he's supposed to be cleaned up but painted up Jeff just screams "This dude is high as fuck" The best thing I can say about this going in is that I can tell by how much time is left that they aren't going to go real long here. I really don't know what to expect it feels like a very boom or bust matchup here. Sabu has a blonde dressed like I Dream of Jeannie with him which is an interesting addition to the act. They spend FOREVER deciding which side of the ring Matt Hardy is going throw his shirt out to. Wow Matt takes the most awkward monkey flip I have ever seen from RVD. Sabu gets his Genie to give him a chair and it looks like the shittiest wrestling chair ever. Then Jeff gets one from Matt and they duel with them until Sabu throws his at Jeff's head. Sabu sets up that plastic POS chair up to do his signature "jump off the chair into my opponent in the corner" move but Jeff kicks the chair into him as he's running in. Good thing because he would have died trying to spring off that chair. That sets up them doing some fun stuff with cutting off each other's signature spots. We get a ladder in the ring and Matt takes a suplex off onto it and it looked real nasty. Hardys opt for the "use the ladder as a weapon" strategy over the "use it to jump off of" strategy to show that they are older and wiser (minus the taking suplexes on it part) Some of this stuff falls flat though because unless you really blast a guy with the ladder, it usually doesn't look good and feels "phony." These chairs suck so much as weapons. Sabu makes the best of it by just throwing them and not swinging them. The table is pretty much already broken when they set it up so Matt has to go on it really gingerly and Sabu jumps off so fucking fast with his legdrop that it was very comical. Someone hands Sabu a table and not just anyone a "japanese table" and the crowd tells him it's not gonna break. It DOES break when Sabu legdrops Jeff Hardy thru it however. This feels like a mercy killing when RVD his the Five Star Frog Splash on Jeff and ends this. This was a spotfest of the trainwreck variety and not the fun variety. These guys had too many problems with their plunder and they didn't do very good making up for it, or even covering for it and not making it obvious.
Overall this was a fun show. Guys I want to see more of following this would be ACH & Roderick Strong. Need to check out some of Matt Sydal's post WWE work also because I loved him as Evan Bourne and he still looked really good here. Pic is included to show just how shitty those chairs in the main event were.
