Bryan was drawing less than John Cena at house shows, selling less merchandise than John Cena and his television segments were lower rated than John Cena's, so they wrote it off as a vocal minority that didn't really represent the WWE fanbase as a whole. What's missed there is that such outcomes were almost entirely the result of self-fulling prophecy. Not to say Bryan would have been a bigger draw than Cena with the right push, but he had enough fan support that they needed to try to do something more with him. Somewhere along the way, their perception changed, probably more because Batista ending WM as the champ wasn't going to work than anything else. That's my theory. Just imagine Batista going over at the end of the same show where John Cena defeated Bray Wyatt and the Undertaker's streak ended.

This mindset that it's disrespectful for fans to reject a bad idea is something I don't get. If anything, I wish fans in every town held their feet to the fire like that, because it might result in a consistently fantastic WWE.

I love this because it's true. In today's scene, nobody buys a 6'5", 300 lb guy winning the title. It just exposes the business.

This week's article covering January 18-January 24 is now up: http://placetobenation.com/this-week-in-90s-wrestling-january-18th-january-24th/

Because of Sheamus being portrayed as a second-tier wrestler for so long, I really think that match has RAW main event potential at a maximum unless/until Sheamus is really rebuilt. They would have closed the show with a match like that at one time, but I don't think they would now. It would probably go at the top of the third hour.

Eddie Marlin was at least a former wrestler who was responsible for keeping order on the show, and even as late as 1988 (maybe later), he'd occasionally come out of retirement and do a gimmicked brawl when a feud called for it. His physical involvement didn't really bother me for that reason. If he wasn't a wrestler at any point, it probably would have.

Bret?

Apple TV mostly, but sometimes PC too.

Do they have a lot of Ray Stevens footage in their library? If not, that's probably what would keep them from inducting him as much as anything. That's what is keeping Danny Hodge out, sadly. Lou Thesz should be in whether he's marketable or not, though. He's Lou Thesz. He's one of those people where fans should at least be familiar with the name and have a general idea of his place in history. The fact that he isn't shows that as much as the acknowledgment of history has improved in the last 10-15 years, they could still do so much better. Then again, I'm not even sure everyone on their roster would know the significance of the name. If I ever see Cameron in public, I'm going to ask her about Lou Thesz.

It fits everything we have ever heard about him. He has done it with his talent for years.

I had no clue Paige was saying "Thursday" at first.

1993 RAW lives on. This was a fun TV match that would fit right in on a show at the Manhattan Center. Falla Bah makes a good fake Yokozuna and should probably be signed by WWE. Pretty agile for a guy his size. Starts at 6:03 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HG8Ct2rJKHM

This was pretty far from a traditional shoot-style match, although there were elements of it that were there. If you can get past that, I still think this is good. It wasn't the match I expected it to be, but it was a fun spectacle anyway. I'm guessing this is a nostalgia style at this point more than anything.

I had a review written out for this and got an IPS Driver Error because of the apostrophe in Kyle O'Reilly's name. Ugh. Anyway, this was a solid match. I don't remember a ton about it, but it was fun while it lasted. They didn't really get the crowd into it very much, but I credit that more to the perils of working in a dome than I do the way they worked the match. There isn't much art to matches like this because the psychology isn't really important - they're just throwing bombs. But the bombs were well paced and hit cleanly, so I think they accomplished what they were going for just fine. Good.

Everyone loves Dawna! Perhaps the sarcasm wasn't easy to pick up on, but believe me, Dawna is a favorite of pretty much everyone who has posted in this thread.

I have the show recording. How did he look in his first match back?

I don't think fans will give up on the guy. If all the bad booking before last year's Rumble and eight months on the sidelines don't make people lose their affection for him, then nothing will. I feel like he's going to be the Bret Hart or Ric Flair type of this era in that he's never really going to be the guy they want to build around, but they will often have to go back to him because of either fan demand or because their other experiments don't work out. We'll see if I'm right on that point or not.

I feel like fans want the extended Daniel Bryan reign as champion now - not just for him to win, but for him to hold on to it for a little while and take on all comers, since that didn't happen last year. I don't think his persona is the type that needs the title for a long period of time, but he at least needs a few months of challengers before dropping the title, and if they don't go for total heartbreak in the storytelling when having him drop it, they are doing it wrong.

Do old lapsed WCW/NWA fans even keep up with wrestling enough to know that there is a such thing as a WWE Network? WWE only promotes it on its own programs, which is something else I don't get. There has been no media push even at the level there has been this week for Daniel Bryan's return.

Everyone was most excited about Mr. Perfect at that time, but Goldust was the one who came out of nowhere to have a strong run.
-
Also, a ripoff doesn't have to be a direct copy. That said, it's wrestling. If even Ric Flair can be a direct ripoff of someone else's gimmick, then it's a moot point.

Vince is a complex person, but I can't imagine him caring that much about someone who hadn't worked for him in over a decade. Luger jumped to WCW to kick off the Monday Night Wars and the Confidential piece was his receipt.
-
That's an infinitely better plan for him that I personally think will get over far better than beating Brock at Wrestlemania, even though guys tend to stall out when paired with Heyman.
-
This was a solid match, but the match on Main Event was better. I wish either of them would have won two straight instead of trading wins but that's the WWE way.

Really good match from Main Event that picked up steam the longer it went. I really enjoyed the elongated finishing stretch. I know Kofi's rep but I thought he was really good in this match, as was Xavier Woods. New Day worked the crowd really well. Kidd and Cesaro both seem like good mechanics and work well as a team but the purpose of this was to get New Day over and they did that. **1/4
