Would a tag team with Kofi get over as an opening match-type act?

[1990-04-21-USWA-Championship Sports] Interview: Jerry Lawler
Loss replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
Billy Joe's turn aired on television, but no one has it from what we could find. I don't know the circumstances because of that.- 13 replies

Based on Wrestlemania IV bracketing, Steamboat-Savage would have happened in the quarterfinals instead of Savage-Valentine, had Steamboat won his first round match. But it didn't because Valentine beat Steamboat in the first round.

Hey, you took my line!

I think the half wrestler-half manager role, a la Eddie Gilbert, might have worked for Miz too.
-
Shawn is a threat because he wins and because he is booked to take overcome huge amounts of punishment. Shawn has absolutely been pushed as a threat for most of the past 20+ years - not a physically imposing threat, but a guy capable of winning any match anytime. All of Miz's wins are treated as flukes and just about all of Shawn's wins have been treated as well-deserved and earned. That's the difference. It's amazing when you look back at Shawn's career that he was able to go toe-to-toe credibly with guys much bigger than him despite not having any real hurty-looking offense and working super light. When you really look at why, it comes down to his won-loss record. Shawn Michaels won, so Shawn was credible. If Miz won, Miz would be credible too.

I think he had been doing it as a fan since The Rock took off, but yeah.

Moved all the Coral-Miz talk to Pro Wrestling Mostly. Sorry for opening that up.
-
Haha, no. Before The Miz was The Miz of wrestling, he was The Miz of The Real World, if that tells you anything.
-
Continued here from the Current WWE thread so we don't make that thread about The Real World.
-
Sorry for the brief aside. I'll make a thread about Coral and The Miz in Pro Wrestling Mostly if anyone wants to talk about that further.
-
Coral was his enemy-turned-friend on his season of The Real World. He said a lot of things early on that were more naive and reflective of how sheltered he had been than outright racist, but after getting infuriated with him multiple times, Coral finally befriended him. Anyway, she was a tremendous promo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jQeLvxFnmA
-
People have said this as a joke before, but seriously, I would be into them hiring Coral to interfere in his matches at ringside. She'd be a natural great promo too.
-
Yeah, Bray's an example of someone I'd say they didn't quite handle right, but came close. He was getting a reaction, so they tried moving him up. His reaction faded, so they moved him down. Of course, losing to Cena at WM is the moment he sort of fell off. I guess my point is that I still think winning and losing matters more than anything else in getting people over.
-
If they just gave wins to just about everyone who got a pop to see if they could get some momentum on their side, there would be almost no backlash from anyone. Whether Cesaro is their next top star or not, they certainly haven't tried to maximize his potential.
-
The Dolph push does sort of strike me as something they don't realize they are doing. As soon as they figure out that they have him on a pretty good winning streak, they will cool him off.
-
It matters in the sense that it diminishes Bret's status as an all-time great if he was phoning in a lot of his matches. Also, can you please call me Loss instead of Charles? When people refer to me by my real name on here when that's not the username I chose, it always catches me off guard. Sorry, just a quirk.
-
He runs a "wrestling promotion" without a roster, live events or a television show.
-
It aired on USWA TV for sure. Not sure about WWF TV.
-
That's wonderful, but please stop trolling.

I don't know the answer to that question. Possibly? I think it's a testament to Dave's credibility that he is held to a higher standard. He's kept his integrity covering professional wrestling for 30 years. Think about all that entails and how admirable that is. So when something like this happens, it stands out a lot more than it would if he had a track record of this sort of thing. For those who scoff at this because it's just wrestling, remember that Dave has covered rapes, murders, Congressional hearings, sex scandals, drug-related deaths, domestic violence, suicide and far more -- and in many cases involving people who knew very well on a personal level.
-
"Controversy" is the wrong word. He didn't take the gig. But we can still debate whether or not it's appropriate for a wrestling reporter to take on that role. Was anyone who thinks this is all ridiculous around when Bob Ryder was covering WCW as a WCW employee on 1wrestling.com? If so, do we really want Dave Meltzer to be the next Bob Ryder?

I have no issue with him helping announcers prepare for shows. He has done that before. He helped Mike Tenay track Goldberg's streak and gave Joey Styles info to use when calling the Michinoku Pro tag at Barely Legal. But as a voice on the air, when an announcer's job is to make everything seem great whether it is or not?
