This time, Mark Henry is facing Gangrel and gets distracted by Chyna's appearance. D-Lo tries to talk some sense into him. Chyna agrees to the dinner date with Mark Henry. Henry can't believe it!

Vince insists that he had nothing to do with Undertaker hitting Austin with the shovel last week and we know this to be the case because Vince doesn't lie. Vince is ready to announce a new WWF Commissioner. I'm not sure why another layer of authority figures was really needed. Slaughter is stepping aside and Vince says this commissioner will not answer to even him. The only exception to that rule is Steve Austin, because he's Vince's. Vince will make all decisions related to Austin. So he finally introduces Shawn Michaels. He's been gone about 8 months, but it seems SO much longer. Shawn promises that things will never be the same again. His delivery is incredibly obnoxious here. He announces Rock vs X-Pac in the main event. Then the DX music starts and Michaels starts crotch chopping right away.

Goldberg kicks out of the chokeslam right away and kicks out. This is over after a spear and jackhammer, which gets a HUGE pop. Bam Bam Bigelow runs out as soon as the match is over to put the boots to Goldberg and they have yet another great pull-apart brawl. Nash comes out and goes after Goldberg, which gets an even bigger pop. This was definitely effective in hyping the pay-per-view.

Jericho's hair gets even more bizarre. I love the guy dressed like Ralphus in the crowd. Jericho feels let down by the Jerichoholics for not showing him enough respect lately. He reminds his fans that he is their role model and thus better than them. He also has been relegated to a feud with Bobby Duncum Jr. He has struggled for motivation here, saying he hates cowboys because Stu Hart made him be one in his first match. Suddenly, Duncum shows up with Ralphus hogtied and his mouth taped shut.

Kind of a famous match for Nash going over a guy with an undefeated streak to make clear he was going over Goldberg at Starrcade. This was a surprisingly okay big guy match, with Nash seeming motivated and even giving Wrath a lot of openings.

[1998-11-23-WCW-Nitro] Ric Flair, Eric Bischoff and Barry Windham
Loss replied to Loss's topic in November 1998
Bischoff says tonight, Ric Flair will understand that he is the one that runs this company. This is their time to resolve their issue. Bischoff says Flair has no authority to hire or fire anyone and asks Barry Windham to come out to resolve this. Bischoff tells Flair that Windham is about to knock him on his ass. Flair responds by sighting tradition and Barry Windham's history. Bischoff says Flair just has to understand that he has the power. He slaps Flair and Flair slugs him until Windham attacks him from behind. Flair looks excited to do something physical. Windham gets the better of him though. Windham holds Flair down while Bischoff gets in some kicks. The Horsemen try to make the save, but the NWO cut them off at the pass and attack them. Great segment with lots of heat, but Barry Windham in 1998?- 4 replies

[1998-11-23-WCW-Nitro] Rey Misterio Jr vs Billy Kidman
Loss replied to Loss's topic in November 1998
Rey unveils all sorts of new moves here, and he's moving around much better than he has for most of the year. This was a good match that had the crowd. Eddy comes out and tries to interfere, but eats a dropkick and pescado from Kidman. Juventud runs in the ring in an LWO shirt and his Rey with a Juvi Driver. Heel turn for Juventud. Kidman doesn't see all this, hits the SSP and retains the title. I love that Juventud wears reading glasses in his run-in.- 4 replies

Nash looks more jovial than he has been in months, which is probably a shoot. He talks about how Savage and Sting were taken out and that everyone has been trying to undermine them from day one. Nash is thrilled that he's next. A "Goldberg" chant starts, which isn't as strong as normal. Gene catches Nash coming back to ask him about his status with Scott Hall. Nash says last time he stuck his hand out to him, he got attacked, but Hall will have to prove his loyalty. Goldberg walks by Nash and tells him to get ready while Nash makes fun of him and tells him to cut back on the caffeine. Yeah, Nash is ready to make WCW his plaything.

[1998-11-23-WCW-Nitro] Billy Kidman, Eddy Guerrero and Rey Misterio Jr
Loss replied to Loss's topic in November 1998
Gene brings Kidman, who was getting pretty over in the midcard, out for an interview. Kidman says now that Rey has quit the LWO, he'll give him a title shot. Eddy shows up to loud boos. At first I thought Rey was getting booed for showing good sportsmanship. Eddy comes out tonight and says Rey is legally bound to the LWO and he can't leave the group. Wait, last night ... Anyway, Eddy demands that Rey put on a 6XL LWO t-shirt.- 3 replies

Last few minutes. This was apparently the first match put together entirely by Kevin Nash as the booker. Everyone is standing around while Benoit does all the work. Bigelow enters the ring through the crowd and both NWOs and the WCW guys gang up on him. Goldberg comes out and is ready to fight Bigelow. They get in a brawl that looks better than anything else in this crapola match. It comes down to Benoit and Malenko against the NWOs, which could have made for a fun finale if WCW had a clue. Konnan took his exit through the middle rope. Nash signals that everyone should take out The Giant. They all gang up on him to a huge pop. Benoit and Malenko are quickly eliminated, giving us Hall, Nash and Luger as the final three with Nash victorious. There was SUCH a misplaced sense of optimism at the time that Nash had won his political war with Hogan and was going to push WCW in an entirely new direction.

Goldberg is so above this crap, but he comes to the rescue of Rick Steiner. Scott makes Goldberg's stuff look awesome in their brief interaction.

[1998-11-22-WCW-World War III] Billy Kidman vs Juventud Guerrera
Loss replied to Loss's topic in November 1998
Last few minutes. Not sure how Rey got factored out of this since he beat Juventud on Thunder in the #1 Contender's Match. They use the multiple rings for spots. Some great action here. I think I'll check this out in full sometime. Rey ends up interfering and helping Kidman as payback for the match with Eddy. The LWO gets in Rey's face over it, with Eddy telling him he's either in or out, which makes no sense considering that he was forced into the group to begin with. Rey takes off the NWO shirt and takes off running. Even the undercard world order they don't give a shit about has too many members and confusing booking.- 5 replies

[1998-11-22-WWF-Super Astros] El Hijo del Santo vs Super Loco
Loss replied to Loss's topic in November 1998
Super Astros! WWE thought El Hijo del Santo could be a big star if he would just take off the mask. This is a fun TV match, and Santo does well in the five minute match where he can just show off his highspots. A WCW run where he got lost in the shuffle would have been beneath him, but he would have done okay for himself. -
I loved Psicosis and I'd be surprised if he doesn't end up somewhere on my ballot. I don't think Rey surpassed him as a worker until 1997 or so, and I'm not sure Juventud Guerrera ever did.

[1998-11-21-MPPW-TV] Jerry Lawler & Stacy Carter vs Bill Dundee & Samantha
Loss replied to Loss's topic in November 1998
Sean Stasiak makes his Power Pro debut on commentary. When Dave Brown doubts his ability to take their women, Stasiak responds by pulling both Stacy and Samantha away from the ring and trying to lure him both. They both end up slapping him in the face, all while the Lawler-Dundee match continues. The two end up setting aside their issue and targeting Stasiak for putting his nose in their business, but their sense of harmony is short-lived.- 3 replies

This has no real point or direction, goes way too long and has New Jack repeating himself a lot, but that doesn't stop it from being the best and most compelling ECW promo of the year.

[1998-11-20-FMW-Scramble Survivor] Hayabusa vs Kodo Fuyuki
Loss replied to Loss's topic in November 1998
Fuyuki isn't as good as Masato Tanaka or anything, but even this late, despite being old and slow, he's very good at pacing a match. I thought this was tremendous. I also think it's the type of match that those who haven't gotten into Hayabusa before will really enjoy, as Fuyuki sort of forces him to wrestle his type of match. This resembles a Tenryu match as much as it does anything else, with Fuyuki coming across as a poor man's version of Tenryu, Choshu or Hashimoto. This is a nice slow, stiff match with a bunch of lariats and other high-impact moves, and Fuyuki's win really makes him look like's pulled off something impressive. Great match!- 3 replies

I agree with this. And I would also add that it's clear rewatching old footage that Benoit was by far the most over midcarder in WCW, well above Jericho, Eddy, Rey, Malenko or anyone else we want to throw out. I totally understand and respect the decision not to vote for him, but I think the idea he didn't connect is incorrect. It did take him a long time to get over in WWE.

Hall didn't even "propose" the change. He just called it in the ring because he was pissed off at Terry Taylor over something.
-
If their situation is like WCW's, going back to two hours will be impossible. WCW made that move and it cost them millions of dollars because they had to refund so much ad money. Sadly, once that door is opened, it's pretty tough to go back without paying a heavy price.

As much as I love Vince, it's good that they are building up Rock as the new top heel because he's risking overexposure, as his pre-match promo makes evident. This is a fast-paced, hard-hitting and incredibly heated match between the two top stars of the era. This isn't GREAT or anything, but it's definitely good, and it reminds me of a Crockett era TV main event because of the atmosphere, action and strong face-heel dynamic. Mankind shows up at ringside to try to attack Vince, but Boss Man cuts him off and they end up brawling. Shamrock helps Boss Man and they double team Foley while Vince taunts him. Shamrock pulls the referee out of the ring after a stunner and while Austin is fighting him off, Undertaker shows up in the ring with a shovel. This heat is unreal. Even with the DQ finish, this is almost the perfect TV match for being good while setting up many things for the future at the same time.
