Just the last few minutes, thank God. The smoke blasts are terrible. Warrior is in for a few seconds then disappears, then reappears at the entrance. Hogan slips out of the cage and Warrior can't figure out that he'll have to leave the cage if he wants to get his hands on Hogan. Warrior kicks the cage open and goes after Hogan in the entrance way. This feud is awful and it gets worse. Botched finish with Stevie Ray sees DDP win the match and secure the title shot with Goldberg at Havoc. Well at least that came out of it.

Saturn saying it doesn't matter if he wins or loses before the match starts is incredibly dumb - ok, there goes a reason to care about this match. This is actually a really fun series of storyline payoffs, though. The nearfalls for the run-ins from Kidman and Kanyon were great, and Lodi takes a bump through a ringside table. They also get a great nearfall pop off of Raven's DDT. There isn't much to the match other than the kickouts, but the kickouts are very well set up and get great heat.

[1998-09-13-WCW-Fall Brawl] Chris Jericho vs Greenberg
Loss replied to Loss's topic in September 1998
Jericho does the entrance again where he repeatedly goes through the wrong door. So, so great! The Spinal Tap references are tremendous. We get the full Goldberg entrance only for a little person who looks like Goldberg to come out doing the entrance instead. This was an awesome start to a program with these two, and I'm with Jericho, people would have accepted this as a big feud at this point. It would be the only two new stars WCW created in '98 facing off and yes, Jericho should have lost - been decimated even - but the path there could have been fun.- 4 replies

Gene Okerlund is running down the card when Jericho interrupts him. Jericho cuts a promo on Goldberg for complaining about Jericho having his own personal security and says tonight, we'll get Goldberg vs Jericho, title vs title!

[1998-09-12-WWF-Raw Saturday Night] Al Snow, Pat Patterson and Jerry Brisco
Loss replied to Loss's topic in September 1998
Head is getting over, but I'm guessing the heads were handed out. Snow isn't leaving the ring until he sees a WWF official who has a pulse. Patterson, Brisco and Slaughter come out. Snow calls them stooges and rattles off lines that don't pop the crowd, but Jim Ross has to do his fake laugh anyway. Snow tries to do The Stooge Is Right and this doesn't really work. He ends up sneaking in a low blow on Patterson before taking off through the crowd. The Snow stuff seems overthought in some ways considering the part of his act that actually is over, but they deserve an A for effort. -
The Rock is out to talk about dropping the IC title to HHH at Summerslam. He's still a heel but he's getting more fan support, and teases a split from The Nation and feud with Undertaker and Kane.

Context is absolutely part of match quality. No one has argued that point longer than I have. But I also don't think the best matches are simply the ones I enjoy the most. In fact, that kinda goes against the idea of context meaning anything at all. I'll put it this way - I hate Hogan-Andre from Wrestlemania III as a match, but I would be the first to argue that it should go in a HOF. It doesn't matter if I enjoy it or not. It's a much stronger pick than something like Yoshiko Tamura vs Toshie Uematsu from GAEA in 1997, which I'd argue is one of the best matches I've ever seen.

[1998-09-11-AJPW-Summer Action Series II] Kenta Kobashi vs Akira Taue
Loss replied to Loss's topic in September 1998
This wasn't as great as the Kobashi-Akiyama match, but it was still pretty great, and this match does a far better job of presenting Kobashi as a credible champion. Kobashi is the aggressor this time around, unloading on Taue with great strikes and kicks. They have a lot of great apron battles, and the floor nodowa gets a huge reaction when it finally happens because it has been teased in so many sequences throughout the match. I also like how Kobashi's lariat is being used as the great equalizer anytime Taue goes on a stretch of offense. Wonderful match.- 11 replies

[1998-09-11-AJPW-Summer Action Series II] Jun Akiyama vs Yoshinari Ogawa
Loss replied to Loss's topic in September 1998
Ogawa shocked everyone when he pinned Akiyama in the six-man on August 23. Now he has a singles match with Akiyama and a chance to continue his momentum. This match is great. A switch flipped somewhere in Ogawa's mind and he's tired of being the whipping boy for the real stars. So he uses every tactic at his disposal - some legal and some not - to try to win this one. He's trying to ground Akiyama and work over his arm, so there is a strategy. But the bigger thing going on here is that Ogawa seems surprised every time he has any success in the match. From what I've seen of Ogawa in 1999, I love him there too. His push wasn't something All Japan fans of the time particularly enjoyed, and I can only surmise that's because he didn't fit the mold. But that's precisely why I like him so much. That's the whole point - that he's on this run where he's making surprisingly good showings (even when he loses) and he has no idea how he's doing it, only that he is doing it. His "inexperience" shows here, not as a worker as much as a guy who makes fatal mistakes in pressure-packed singles matches, a position new to him at this point. My absolute favorite moment of the match is when he's trying to go toe-to-toe and it absolutely isn't working at all, so he pokes Akiyama in the eye amidst a bunch of flash pin attempts. He also gets a few surprise kickouts before Akiyama ultimately puts him away. This isn't the MOTY, nor is that what they are really going for here. But this is probably one of my ten personal favorite matches of the 90s. Misawa coming out to check on Ogawa after the match and help him up is just perfect.- 14 replies

[1998-09-10-WCW-Thunder] Arn Anderson and Eric Bischoff
Loss replied to Loss's topic in September 1998
Tony Schiavone is in the ring to interview Arn and Malenko. The NWO has started attacking guys associated with Arn to send a message and Arn gives a great fired up promo in response. He says Dean has proven that he's Horsemen material whether the group gets back together or not. This brings out Bischoff who says it's not Arn's call, it's HIS call on whether or not there will ever be a Four Horsemen reunion. He tries to bully Arn into saying he works for Eric Bischoff and pulls out Arn's book, pointing out that he never gave him permission to write the book. He also calls Arn on saying that everything the NWO did, the Horsemen did 10 years earlier. Bischoff said he may have done that when putting 1200 people in a 15,000-seat arena while Jim Crockett went bankrupt while Bischoff made WCW the #1 wrestling company in the U.S. Ouch. Bischoff is AWESOME here and provokes Arn to the point that he starts choking him out! The name RIC FLAIR gets namedropped for the first time in months, with Bischoff saying he'll be happy to sue Arn the same way he's suing Flair if he ever touches him again. He says he and Arn can arm wrestle (with Arn's bad arm) on Thunder next week and if Arn wins, Flair can get back in the ring. Something changed between Thursday and Monday to make that a no-go, but this is a great segment all the same, and hopefully Flair returning can breathe some life into WCW for a while. -
Duggan gives a really great, heartfelt promo talking about his career before announcing that he has been diagnosed with cancer. He says he's scheduled for surgery this week and he's hopeful that the cancer will be removed. This was a pretty emotional scene.

One of the most half funny, half infamous things ever on WCW TV. We get the debut of Ralphus and the Jerichoholic Ninja! They escort Jericho to the ring while he spoofs Spinal Tap and he keeps going to the wrong door and can't find the ring. This is hilarious. He ends up accidentally locking himself out of the building, but accidentally opens it anyway. Wrath decides to go get him and chases him in the parking lot. Funny segment, right? Well they keep filming longer than they were supposed to so we eventually get brief footage where both stop running and start laughing on camera. WCW all the way.
-
Jericho has decided that since WCW is primarily a television company, he feels as TV Champion that he's the most important guy in WCW. He doesn't think it's fair that Goldberg gets all the big entrance with security and he doesn't, so he's arranged for his own security detail which we'll see later tonight. Ah yes.

[1998-09-07-WCW-Nitro] Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior
Loss replied to Loss's topic in September 1998
Hogan says Warrior doesn't have the guts to take the NWO on one-by-one and prove himself. He says Warrior is going to have to take on the big man. Hogan wants a cage to lower in the ring and says if Warrior can get through Giant, he can get his hands on Hogan. Hogan says he's going to beat Goldberg to win the title at Fall Brawl, which is NOT a match on the card. That's weird. But not as weird as a cloud of smoke appearing and Giant being laid out while Warrior has Hogan trapped in a cage by himself. Bischoff runs out with the key to the cage and this doesn't have as much heat as it probably should. Hogan whacks Warrior with a chair but Warrior no-sells it, then Hogan bails. Flat segment and this smoke thing is ridiculous.- 4 replies

Eddy has an airbrushed anti-pencil t-shirt, another example of guys having to create their own merchandise because WCW was so behind the curve. Eddy is supposed to wrestle but says he's going to give himself the night off, despite Bischoff's threats.

[1998-09-05-WWF-Raw Saturday Night] The Undertaker, Kane and 2 Cold Scorpio
Loss replied to Loss's topic in September 1998
Now Undertaker and Kane are going after Scorpio. They are out to destroy everyone on this show. Vince looks on smiling. They do a spike tombstone. They see Vince looking on and chase after him as the show ends. -
[1998-09-05-WWF-Raw Saturday Night] Interview: Al Snow
Loss replied to Loss's topic in September 1998
This is interspersed with a video package of Al Snow in ECW and SMW, and from his previous WWF stints. I feel like they've spent four months reintroducing this guy without just getting on with it. Snow talks about how normal he is while discussing how he hears voices. I have liked Snow at times, but I don't think this is a particularly good interview. -
Call for papers of possible interest to PWOers
Loss replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Pro Wrestling
I think it's worth pointing out that at least in a major league wrestling company in the United States, there has never been a "gay gimmick". There have been effeminate gimmicks, but they have always been too afraid to actually use the word "gay". The effeminate gimmick is meant to play on audience homophobia, but I can't recall a wrestler point blank ever actually being gay by saying he was attracted to men and declaring himself. It sounds like they are looking to cover material that has already been covered many times. I'm reminded of this nauseating book: http://www.amazon.com/Professional-Wrestling-Spectacle-Peformance-Studies/dp/1578060214 -
[1998-09-05-WWF-Raw Saturday Night] The Undertaker, Kane and D-Lo Brown
Loss replied to Loss's topic in September 1998
Undertaker and Kane are about to go after D-Lo in his match when Rock makes the save and tries to help out his Nation member. They double team him while D-Lo bails. Good stuff setting up Rock's upcoming babyface turn. -
[1998-09-05-WWF-Raw Saturday Night] Vince McMahon promo
Loss replied to Loss's topic in September 1998
Vince is in a jolly mood because Steve Austin will experience a physical and emotional BREAKDOWN on September 27. Vince pulls out his GUARANTEE for the first time - saying that Austin will not be champion anymore. Vince calls Undertaker a fool for sending Kane back to the locker room after Summerslam. Vince's sarcasm over Austin being on such a hip show as Regis & Kathie Lee is hilarious but I don't understand why he said that. Vince says Undertaker and Kane couldn't even terrorize a kindergarden and calls them "putrid pussies". This brings them out. Vince takes off through the crowd and they follow him. Vince is great! -
Lance Storm introduces Dawn Marie as Tammy Lynn Bytch. Storm says that the woman hanging out with Candido is an impostor. He throws all the standard insults at Tammy based on her reputation. The match didn't do much for me anyway, but it might have been closer to good without the unnecessary table spots. Dumbest finish ever with Tammy pinning Storm with an inside cradle. Why would the referee count that, and why wouldn't Joey Styles even try to sell confusion over that?

Can anyone help me fill in those question marks on Lawler's team? This is kind of a lethargic brawl that isn't helped by Lawler standing outside and mingling with Stacy while taking shots without getting in the ring at first. This is also a lot of green guys doing garbage can shots and not much else. The eliminations are also hard to follow. Lawler has fun toying with Hales at ringside, but doesn't seem interested in working a match. He reminds me of the Uncensored match where Hogan just came out for a photo op with Rodman.

Brandon Baxter is out to say something to Stacy - everyone knows they are together and it's not befitting of her to lie to the people. He says he had no intentions of having the fling with Stacy, but she threw herself at him and he couldn't resist the temptation. He asks Stacy to come out and confess because they can't go on living a lie. Stacy comes out but tells him off and calls him a liar. He says he has proof that they were together in the form of an audio cassette. She ends up kneeing him in the gut and walking off. Poor Stacy - her accent is too Southern to cut promos even in Memphis.
