[1998-09-05-MPPW-TV] Jerry Lawler vs Billy Joe Travis
Loss replied to Loss's topic in September 1998
Randy Hales explains the stips of this match first - if Lawler wins, Hales is in a cage at ringside for the duration of the show while if Travis wins, Stacy is the one in the cage. I'm enjoying all of these Lawler-Travis matches and this was another fun one, but I'm waiting for at least one to go to the next level. Travis gets a win after a ref distraction and chain shot, but the decision is reversed when the referee finds the chain on Travis's person. As a result, Hales has to spend the entire television show in a cage at ringside. Hales tries to bail and is stopped by a big chunk of his roster, who drag him in. This isn't really particularly demeaning on its own, but it gets over because Hales puts it over as humiliating. Again, I admire Hales showing so much ass to try to get this feud with Lawler over. Austin-McMahon has been a little quiet for a while so this no longer feels like a straight copycat feud at all. Five months in and still totally fresh.- 3 replies

Factoring in drawing is not a zero-sum game. Not every match that is going to be in the HOF is going to be in for the same reason. A HOF based entirely on drawing is boring and too factual. A HOF that doesn't factor it in at all and goes entirely with match quality lacks perspective. The absolute best matches of all time should make a HOF, but so should iconic, generation-defining matches that shattered attendance records. There's room for both.

I was thinking about a "Gordy List" of sorts for this project. I personally think this should be a mix of great matches and memorable ones performed on a grand stage that may or may not be great. So something like Hogan-Andre or Bret-Shawn in Montreal should absolutely be in a matches HOF. Matches we love within our PWO bubble that haven't gotten much play outside of it? I don't want to say no, but I do think it's a tougher sell. At that point, I'm looking at things like PWI, WON and Tokyo Sports MOTY honors. Our thoughts on the matches matter for sure and should absolutely be considered. I just think we need to take everything into consideration -- how it looked then, how it looks now, how influential it was, how much it drew, what type of honors it got, and yes, what we've learned to appreciate about it through revisionism. The matches that get in aren't necessarily strong or weak in specific areas, but the composite takeaway is important when factoring in everything.

Not necessarily. Sometimes, I suppose. The thing is that wrestlers own the delivery of their match but they don't really own the interpretation of it. It's possible for guys to work holds because they are blown up and still be doing something to move the match forward I would think.

How does Austin stand up as an all-timer amid the Attitude era backlash?
Loss replied to BigBadMick's topic in Pro Wrestling
The Austin-Flair RAW match that Austin had on his way out was really fun too. The one with the no punching rule. One of the few times in his last WWE run that Flair got to show a lot of veteran touches no one else was really doing at the time. -
I just watched the full version of this (from Samurai TV), and I'm glad I did. I saw the first half of this in a different way from Ditch and loved the match overall. Kanemoto goes after Liger's knee almost immediately and stays on it throughout the match. The layout is designed to put Kanemoto over strong, as he takes the majority of the match while Liger sells. For those like me who enjoy a good focused narrative, this is absolutely a match to check out. It sacrifices some excitement for the sake of coherency, but they fully committed themselves to that choice. Some of the stuff Kanemoto decides to Hulk up from is questionable, but it only really happens with two spots, and that's the only real flaw in an otherwise outstanding match. I will upload this to YouTube soon and post a link in this thread.

Do you guys mind if I try to make you a primer? I know what you like and don't like in your wrestling Matt, and if you start off with 40-minute Manami Toyota tags, I suspect you'll faint on the spot.

[1998-08-31-WCW-Nitro] Hulk Hogan & Bret Hart vs Sting & Lex Luger
Loss replied to Loss's topic in August 1998
Last few minutes. Luger is FIP. Sting comes in for the hot tag and Disciple moves Hogan out of the way of a Stinger Splash, leaving Hogan to do a number on him with the strap. Bret Hart takes the strap from Hogan and the two end up in an argument. Sting and Luger win by countout. The crowd seems hyped for the Hogan-Bret tease, but not nearly as much as they would have been months earlier when it would have been the single biggest match any wrestling company could put on. While they are arguing, Warrior appears in a cloud of smoke in the ring and scares Hogan away.- 3 replies

JJ calls Arn Anderson out to show him an old clip of him cutting a promo beachside on Mid Atlantic TV. As you can imagine, I loved this. JJ tries to talk Arn into reforming the Horsemen, making a parallel between Arn being a young guy 15 years ago and getting direction from JJ and now with Benoit and Mongo asking for direction. They acknowledge that Arn can't get back in the ring and they don't say the words, but it is obvious this is building to a Horsemen reunion. There are LOUD "We Want Flair!" chants. This was a tremendous segment, and I think they had already worked out a deal to bring Flair back by this point. This was great in building to that.

Wow, Bischoff addressed Eddy Guerrero during a Hogan promo. I'm impressed and I don't remember that happening. Hogan announces that his partners at War Games will be The Disciple and Stevie Ray. Wooowww. Hogan promises to dispose of Warrior then set his sights on Goldberg to regain the title. He calls Warrior out right then.

[1998-08-30-WWF-Summerslam] Steve Austin vs The Undertaker
Loss replied to Loss's topic in August 1998
I think the problem with these two having a good match is that they are both so dominant and both are portrayed as such asskickers that there isn't enough of a contrast. In theory, when you have two guys where no one thinks either guy can be beat, you have a lot of intrigue, and they did have that to an extent. But this suffered in practice because neither guy really worked from underneath too long and Undertaker hadn't yet turned heel. This was solid, but it was also anti-climatic considering the epic build. It was a match that didn't live up to the hype.- 12 replies

Connecticut Yankee is horrible! This whole PPV feels like the payoff for the WWF spending months creating new stars. They borrow some stuff from Shawn-Razor three years earlier here with Rock working over HHH's knee. Their timing is off on some stuff, specifically when Rock has to stall climbing the ladder while HHH did the spot with Mark Henry and Chyna. Pretty amazing shift in the middle of this as Rock is suddenly a huge babyface with the crowd. That one flaw aside, they really crafted a great match here, specifically in teasing finishes while prolonging the match. There are better ladder matches but in terms of matches that click with a crowd and accomplish something in the big picture, this might be at the top of the list. As much as the WWF had been grooming these guys, this reaction still had to have shocked the hell out of everyone. I could nitpick this, but I think that would entirely miss the point. The WWF is on fire.

The NAO win the tag titles but this was great for getting Foley over and beginning his transition to babyface. Good booking here. I think the NAO are too heelish here but I like the booking sentiment. Kane shows up in the dumpster after the Outlaws toss Foley in and lays him out with a sledgehammer.

They've rewritten that period now anyway. DX turned things around.

[1998-08-30-WWF-Summerslam] Owen Hart vs Ken Shamrock (Lion's Den)
Loss replied to Loss's topic in August 1998
This was a great match in a unique setting. Owen was a total pro here. I watch Shamrock and it makes me sad that his wrestling career didn't go farther than it did because he was very good. I think the Dungeon Match was slightly better, but this was excellent with lots of bumping that resonates more on the hard surface. -
Deeeeeeep armdrag.

Mankind is awesome here, going off on Michael Cole when he says he has to go out there with Kane so people get their money's worth. Vince calms him down and suggests a way to cement his legacy - one man defending the tag titles in Madison Square Garden and that he'll see that Mick is inducted into the MSG HOF next week. Mick has the awesome line where he has 13 words for DX. Great interview!

[1998-08-30-WWF-Summerslam] Jeff Jarrett vs X-Pac (Hair vs Hair)
Loss replied to Loss's topic in August 1998
This crowd loves X-Pac. The guy was very over at this point. This was a good match that lost heat when Jarrett dominated, which tells me it was the right time for a gimmick change. He needed to lose this match. They also left him with enough hair to be repackaged. They had to use scissors after the clippers went out. Good match, and I love Finkel's delight in this. Method Man loves X-Pac too! -
[1998-08-30-WWF-Sunday Night Heat] Interview: Shawn Michaels & Sable
Loss replied to Loss's topic in August 1998
Shawn Michaels conducts an interview with Sable. That's interesting. Shawn's cameos from 1998-2002 are sort of sad. Sable hypes her match with Jacqueline. Her mystery partner against Marc Mero and Jacqueline has yet to be revealed. She won't reveal her partner now but wants to dance with Shawn and that's how the segment closes out. They clearly wanted us to think Shawn might be her mystery partner. Oh, the days of Shawn return rumors constantly. -
They recap the affair accusations from last week. Stacy sends in a taped response to everything that came out last week. She says Randy Hales is doing everything in his power that he can to hurt Jerry Lawler and nothing is working. She says everything said was false. Back at the studio, Hales asks Lawler to come out and promises this is not a setup. He just wants to talk to him and make sure he knows the truth. Hales again brings up Lawler's ex-wife and talks about how Stacy ruined his life. He says he can prove she's cheating on him. He has a postcard from Brandon Baxter in Florida with the postmark date to prove it. Lawler rips up the postcard and stands off a group of heels. This is like Austin-Adams combined with Austin-McMahon.
