Goldust comes out as Hunterdust, wearing a huge nose and a HHH wig while walking with a crutch. Luna dressed as Chyna is funny. Okay TV match, but nothing special. Owen wins the title and it would appear that HHH has outsmarted everyone, but in reality, Sgt. Slaughter says the decision stands and that Owen is now the European Champion. I guess this was as good as it was going to get for Owen - beating a HHH surrogate to win a title.

[1998-01-26-WWF-Raw] Cactus Jack & Chainsaw Charlie vs New Age Outlaws
Loss replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
I liked the Funk/Cactus conversation in the ring earlier that day. Kind of a blah match that the NAO win by DQ. Cactus and especially Funk try to bring some excitement but yeah, the NAO just weren't there. A brawl continues for a few minutes after a match which peaks with Funk doing a moonsault on a pile of chairs which was stacked on top of Road Dogg. Later, Funk and Foley are being interviewed but are quickly interrupted by DX, who make fun of their hardcore legend status before the NAO join them in an attack. -
January 26 was the date of false sincerity for heels. This went way too long and I started zoning out, but Shawn ends up offering to referee a match between Steve Austin and Mike Tyson at Wrestlemania.
-
Jericho fell right into this role. The heel turn really turned around his career. I laughed when he asked Rey to keep us abreast of his progress.

Savage arrives by himself and looks ready to raise hell. Not that Juventud Guerrera vs Louie Spicolli was a monumental match or anything, but I have never liked main eventers rushing midcard matches and beating everyone up. He wants Luger to come out and instead, the entire NWO is out. An NWO breakup was definitely the right course, but it didn't need the slow burn at all, and it really needed to be Hogan/Savage vs Hall/Nash. This seemed to be about making sure Hogan and Savage were a level above Hall and Nash. The NWO no longer feels fresh or different at all and this is just so stale even though they are running with the dissension.

[1998-01-26-WCW-Nitro] Interview: Kevin Nash & Eric Bischoff

Kudos to Nash acting like a total heel here - false sincerity, lying, gloating ... it's all here.- 5 replies

They are so lucky that powerbomb didn't result in a far more serious injury. JJ Dillon gets booed like crazy even before making the announcement, but I like the focus on wrestling that fuels all of this. Criminal prosecution? For a powerbomb?

Goldberg is just a total superstar here - really looking like the next version of Hogan or the Road Warriors in terms of popularity. He really doesn't get enough credit. This was a guy who knew who he was. Armstrong ate that spear pretty hard.

The Nitro Girls are bringing everyone back into the frathouse, surely to sit down and have a conversation about Lou Thesz or something. Kidding aside, this is the kind of thing that made WCW look really major league, and Gene Okerlund is the perfect guy to be on-site since I don't think any of the other announcers would know how to get it over.

[1998-01-26-AJPW-New Year's Giant Series] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Jun Akiyama
Loss replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
This was a borderline great match but was also on the uneven side. I really enjoyed it overall more for what they were aiming for (slow building classic) than what they actually did (match with long periods of dullness broken up by a few moments of excitement), but there was some really good stuff in this. Akiyama probably gives what I'd call his best singles performance to this point in his career. Misawa really slowed the pace down, which on its own isn't a bad thing, but it made this match feel small at times. I hope these two have a match that fully reaches the potential of the matchup at some point, but this was a major improvement over their 1997 matches for me.- 12 replies

I started a thread earlier today in Publications & Podcasts to discuss that article. Please comment there instead of here. Thanks.

How much do you think matches airing on MSG Network played a part in getting wrestlers over in the NY market? Does anyone know what kind of ratings those shows drew?
-
Yeah, the IWC had a meeting in 1994 and decided to start liking Dustin Rhodes. I wasn't there, but I heard about it.
-
I didn't like Luger during this time using the forearm to set up the torture rack when he used to do back work. Scott Hall comes out with a chair and Hogan stops him, leading to a Luger win. Lousy finish to the last match on the card, and the Hogan-Hall dissension went nowhere. Sting has lost so much in record time. He still gets a nice reaction but it's not as huge as it was a few months before this. Luger and Sting lay out Nash and Hogan to close the show.

I thought this was a satisfying match - meaning it was good enough to not be a letdown after all the hype, but not really more than that. I do think this was probably the best match Flair could deliver at this point, but by 1998, his stuff is old hat. It's a good match, but it's also very house show-like with both guys rolling out their standard spots and not really creating any special moments or anything.

Last few minutes. Coffee finishes were back in style. I've always heard Nash worked hammered here which would have been more than enough reason to fire him in a more sane time for wrestling, considering that he seriously hurt someone. That doesn't even get into Nash being scheduled to do a job at Starrcade and then not putting Giant over at the subsequent show.

[1998-01-24-WCW-Souled Out] Larry Zbyszko vs Scott Hall
Loss replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
Last few minutes. Dusty Rhodes joined the NWO and I have no idea what the point of it was. Like, at all. It also made no sense for Spicolli to take bumps for him if he was turning. It also seemed to get over like a lead balloon.- 8 replies

[1998-01-24-WCW-Souled Out] Chris Jericho vs Rey Misterio Jr
Loss replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
Last few minutes. Jericho wins the cruiserweight title, setting off a run that got over but was very different compared to what the division was before that. Nice finishing counter from Jericho and I liked the post-match angle too. Rey's out for a while.- 7 replies

Benoit is pretty over with this crowd. I could have done without the overly cute chair spots that didn't even really get much of a pop, but I did really like the layout of this and how it complemented the build to the match. Raven took most of the early part of the match before Benoit got a big comeback run. I like Raven holding his breath to sell the crossface too. Good on them saving all the Flock run-ins until after the finish. That's how you do it! This should have been the beginning of Benoit and Malenko as a tag team but it took another year for that to happen. This crowd is REALLY into Benoit and Malenko.

This was a really fun way to start a pay-per-view, and I miss WCW when I see stuff like this because they were willing to showcase styles that hadn't always been part of the American presentation. So while I give them credit, I wish they had taken it even farther, giving these guys 25 minutes and three falls to work with. But I'll take what I can get. La Parka's chair rampage got over big with this crowd. Bobby Heenan's repeated "OH!" on highspots is annoying the fuck out of me and I refuse to let it go.

Even though the ring crumbling was a cool visual, what led to this wasn't filmed very well because of the Luger-Savage run-ins not being caught on camera. This was all set up for Giant to finally get his revenge on Nash and then Nash ... well, we'll get to that.

[1998-01-21-RINGS] Kiyoshi Tamura vs Mikhail Ilioukhine
Loss replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
Tamura is a guy who consistently blows me away. I think I've always respected the skill it takes to be great at professional wrestling, but Tamura really delivers something that goes beyond the norm. The cardio needed to work this style is a pretty high standard, but on top of that, his technique and explosiveness is incredible. On top of that, he really understands the psychology and timing aspects of great pro wrestling and is tremendous at building to a series of moments - both where he's dishing out punishment and also where he's on the receiving end - that get a huge response from the crowd. This was just an unrivaled display of mat wrestling and was a super match.- 11 replies
