  1. But the panicked reaction was because they only got a 50% increase on TV rights, not because of their lower cash on hand, right?
  2. Yes. I wish we lived in a world where he could be investigated for fraud over changing the hometowns of wrestlers.
  3. Wow, jumpin' on is now a whole lot easier than jumpin' off! I look forward to making this my first Titans listen.
  4. In fairness, I think most of this is hysterical overreacting from investors who don't understand WWE's core business. Vince is suffering for it without question and has made a few tactical mistakes, but this is all kind of a circus that started with the 60 million fans number. If people paid attention to the television ratings, they would know that number to be completely ridiculous.
  5. That's of course ridiculous. It also assumes most stockholders watch WWE programming.

I think people overblow the "give it away on TV" thing quite often, but sometimes, you want a better build for a match, and matches are often better in the context of a feud than they are as a one-off. To me, it's not so much about PPV vs free TV. It's more about building anticipation than not building anticipation. Wrestling is as much (or more) about the journey as it is the destination.
  7. The SNMEs have supposedly been ready for a while. At one point, they were just waiting on all the free gimmicks to end before adding them. Then they changed course and did nonstop free gimmicks. So I don't know what the status is now.
  8. Dawho, would you be able to use the threads in the Match Discussion Archive for reviews? That will ensure that everyone's comments are in one place. Thanks!

  10. Can anyone confirm when Kick Ass Wrestling actually started? It didn't exist yet in '98, correct?
  11. I suspect no changes at all to their product and instead more sucking up to stockholders and promotion of their charity work.
  12. Some great thoughts here. I like where this thread is going. Funkdoc, I'm not saying this to criticize WWE since we don't know who's on their writing team, but I will say I wouldn't be surprised if there's not a single woman, LGBT person or person of color on the writing team. If the company culture was one where the writers could speak up and there were more minorities in positions of power, segments like the one with Los Matadores that got so panned a few weeks ago wouldn't hit the air. That segment was absolutely not deliberately racist. It was just clueless. A lot of this doesn't really make Vince a bad person on its own, but he's a wealthy old white man who lives in a bubble and is surrounded by yes men. His creative vision draws on his life experience and world view, just as anyone's would. Wrestling needs a Shonda Rhimes.

Speaking of Reigns, is there any update on how serious the injury he supposedly got in Europe was? Reigns going out right now with Bryan already out would be terrible timing.
  14. I brought this up precisely because what WWE is doing right now isn't working. They just got a TV rights renewal where they were undervalued based on the ratings they deliver, and one of the reasons is that most wrestling fans are not college educated and are low-to-middle income. I wasn't at all talking about wrestling I would personally like, and I didn't mean to turn this into an "improve the product" thread. We've seen great product before and it doesn't draw more sophisticated viewers. Some of the answers lie there, but after all this time, I still think the biggest issue is that no wrestling promotion has ever found a way to fully resolve the real/fake thing. Pretending they are real in every aspect makes for a far better presentation in my opinion, but it also turns people off who feel like they are being insulted. That's why I think WWE needs to embrace that they're fake even more than they already do. Anything less than that feeds the perception that the people who watch are stupid and don't know better, thus why would anyone advertise to such fucking idiots?
  15. It's also worth noting that it's not like wrestling attracted educated, wealthy fans before Vince McMahon. The issue pre-dates him.
  16. I feel like they need to go more over the top in admitting it's fake, even using the word FAKE. FAKE FAKE FAKE. Not "form of entertainment", but FAKE. Again, the issue is that advertisers and television executives that don't pay close attention to wrestling but make huge decisions that impact wrestling think fans are so fucking stupid that they don't understand that wrestling is fake. I think WWE should do an ad campaign with two people discussing a TV show. One responds like a typical non-wrestling fan. Here's an example: "Did you see Game of Thrones last night?" "Oh, I don't watch. You know that's fake, right?" Continue dialog about how the fight scenes involved stuntmen and that the actors probably went out for drinks after. I think getting people to wrap their heads around the fact that people know it's fake and don't give a shit because the enjoy it anyway is important -- far more important than any issues with product.
  17. I think the biggest issue is that people who don't watch wrestling think people who do watch wrestling think it's real. How do you get the message across to advertisers and TV executives that wrestling fans are in on the secret?
  18. Let's give this a shot. If your answer is "it can't", don't bother posting in the thread. Realistically, are there changes in wrestling's presentation that could happen that would result in upper middle class college graduates watching in greater numbers? If so, what are they?

I can't think of a single other person who would be viable as champion right now. That's probably why WWE wants to keep the belt on him.
