  1. I don't think Nakamura has the right look to be pushed as this type of wrestler and that was hard for me to get past. I also didn't like his offense at all because it was too pro wrestlingy instead of trying to match Sakuraba's style. I did think this was an okay match and it was interesting to see some modern Sakuraba. I will give this praise for being efficient, but I didn't really buy Nakamura as a credible opponent and they didn't do anything in the body of the match to suggest otherwise.
  2. As 3-way matches go, this wasn't awful, but it wasn't really that good either. Low Ki is still great at the quick bursts of explosive offense I see. Just spots with no real rhyme or reason.
  3. I thought this was a really great, all action, high stakes tag match that just kept building and building to something better as it went along. Everyone seemed pretty desperate to hold on to their hair so they were pulling out all the stops, so you get the deep arsenal of highspots and big bumps because these guys are doing everything they can to stay in the fight. Felt pretty life or death from start to finish, and I have to give them credit for maintaining that emotion for a half hour.
  4. I've been meaning to ask this -- I think he's a good worker and don't have anything against him, but is it fair to say Alberto Del Rio has never really had that much fan support? He strikes me as a guy who is always pushed well above the level fans see him, but am I missing some window of time when he was really over at the level of a Ziggler, Sheamus or even Miz?
  5. This was a pretty cool match, as they spent the first two falls doing a series of hit and runs, daring the other guy to get in a shot that would connect. It only happens a few times and when it does, it results in a fall finish. By the third fall, the playfulness is behind them and they go balls out, busting out the big highspots on the floor and teasing lots of false finishes. I’m not sure how I feel about the WWE-style extended submission tease showing up in CMLL, and I’m also not sure how I feel about the use of the entrance ramp for spots. I'm also not sure how I feel about the big Japan-style hot closing stretch. I have no problem with any of those things as a matter of principle, but I’m just not used to it in lucha libre and for some reason it makes it all seem a little impure. I thought this was really good but probably not something that will be one of my top matches of the year when all is said and done. Blame that on me more than the match — eventually, maybe I’ll get over the idea that all lucha is too good of an art form to ever change with time.
  6. I wasn't watching from Wrestlemania to Summerslam, but were people turning on segments that didn't involve him during that time and booing other people in top spots over perceived resentment for taking Bryan's spot?

That was also pure speculation and Mattel denied it.

The choking thing having anything to do with Linda McMahon's campaign is only speculation and has never been confirmed by anyone reputable. It may be true, but we shouldn't speak about it like it is for sure. They have been rehabbing their image for years now in an attempt to attract more high-dollar sponsors. And they still don't allow choking, in part because of the possibility of kids copying what they see on TV. It's not just Benoit -- think about it. A kid chokes another kid to death and says in court he was just copying what he saw in WWE.

Not really. We've been doing this for the 90s since 2010, now we're expanding it to current wrestling and other parts of wrestling history.
  10. Luger was never actually booked to win at Starrcade. Dusty wanted the title off of Flair because Flair and Dusty were at war. So he came up with the idea of Rick Steiner facing Flair and beating him in five minutes. The idea was that Flair wouldn't pull anything with Steiner in the ring. Flair balked at that and Herd made his first executive decision, replacing Steiner with Luger in the main event and, after listening to advice from Larry Matysik, insisting that Flair go over clean. I know that's not entirely different from what you said, but I just wanted to clarify.

Threads for RAW stuff last night if anyone wants to go in detail on anything. I've posted my thoughts in the respective threads: - HHH, Batista and Randy Orton - The Usos vs Real Americans - Daniel Bryan vs Randy Orton - Paul Heyman promo/Undertaker and Brock Lesnar video - Kane, Jerry Lawler and The Shield - Music Video: John Cena vs Bray Wyatt - HHH and Daniel Bryan: Man To Man
  12. Pretty decent match. Not top tier or anything. I don't think they've forgotten about Cesaro, but there was a big buzz surrounding him around the time of the Cena match and Zayn match on NXT, and I really wish they would have jumped on it immediately instead of slotting him for a post-Mania push. He's a great worker and all it takes is another great match with a top guy to get the buzz back, but I wonder if they missed an opportunity to really do something special.
  13. I thought this was a good match. I groaned early when Bryan went to the knee and was all ready to criticize them for working the same match every time out, but that would have been wrong, as they really went out of their way to make this match feel different. The No DQ stip helped with that. I won't complain about Bryan getting protected, but he's beaten Orton so many times that I wouldn't have minded Orton going over here. Anything at all to make a Bryan title win seem unlikely.
  14. The actual week-to-week hype for Undertaker matches at Wrestlemania is always so terrible. I know it's pretty minimal build, but I sort of wish they'd do even less. Once we know who the opponent is, I'd almost say there's nothing left to do except have the match. Any additional creative only makes me less excited to see it. It may just be that I'm in a bubble, but it doesn't seem like there's huge excitement for Undertaker vs Lesnar.
  15. This was a horrible crowd to run this segment in front of, which is a shame because it was a good angle that was well-executed.
  16. I have some issues with this feud. How is Cena exposed as a fraud and a liar by losing a wrestling match? Bray's motivations don't really make sense to me.
  17. I think anything at all WWE can do to make us think Bryan won't have his moment is a good thing. That's the emotion and feeling that has kept people invested in this. There is that small glimmer of hope, but it works best if it's a small glimmer instead of a foregone conclusion. So for that reason, I thought HHH getting a spot in the main event was appropriate. It's another plausible scenario that stands in the way of Bryan winning the title. The more of those, the better.
  18. If you look at how Daniel Bryan got over, it was by losing big matches that he should have won where the perception was that the machine was working against him. It was by getting beat down all the time. So I don't have a problem with this on principle. I think Wrestlemania will work best if fans are down on their luck and think they are just being strung along, with HHH probably winning the match. Bryan is an impossible guy to bury in the sense that pointing out his flaws and jobbing him out only works to get him more over. However, pushing him too strong and the company giving off the appearance of backing the Yes Movement is what hurts him more than anything. It's a weird dichotomy when a guy benefits more from being buried than being pushed. It shows the amount of resentment so many fans have for WWE Creative. I sort of look at HHH vs Bryan as not just HHH vs Bryan, but the blowoff to a feud between hardcore fans and the creative team that has been brewing since at least the WCW invasion, if not slightly sooner when the start-stop pushes of midcarders became a staple of WWE booking. People are projecting over a decade of letdowns onto this feud, and to WWE's credit, they have been able to channel that frustration into something that works for them. Now all of that said, this segment went far, far too long. Yes, Stephanie was excellent but I think they could have made all the same points in three minutes. Plus, HHH was obviously trying to protect Bryan since there isn't anything he can really do to protect himself on spots if he's handcuffed. Add in what was probably the worst crowd WWE has done TV in front of in 2014 and the end result is a disappointing segment, even if it was probably effective.

That last segment was just way too long though. Way, way too long. Stephanie is awesome though.

The chants aren't quite as loud, but I think more heat building angles (which is what got him over in the first place) like they did tonight will get him back at that level by Mania.
