For the WWF, sure, but it really wasn't must-see TV most of the time.

She usually just carried an unplugged electronic typewriter, not even a laptop. That's what made it so awesome.

The Jim Ross Is A Grouchy Hateful Vile Human Being thread

I could say a lot in response to that entire exchange, but instead I'll just say dot dot dot. -
Seems like only yesterday that he was pretending to slip her date rape drugs so he could marry her at a drive-thru chapel as part of a ruse to fool Vince.

I mean this as a troll to El-P, even though I honestly mean it, but I would be more interested in a Dean Malenko vs Jimmy Golden vs Yumiko Hotta three-way match than more Raven.

The MSG 20-minute draw of a 1980s WWF undercard of MOTYCs. Just so boring and heatless and overly long. It's not that the work was bad. It was just so routine and without any urgency to make it special.

[2013-03-02-ROH-11th Anniversary Show] Kevin Steen vs Jay Lethal
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 2013
This was a good match at times, but was so overbooked with too many false finishes, which made it hard to really get into. I don't need to see these elaborate heel stables in an indy, and I especially don't need to see more booking in a main event than WWE would probably do at this point related to their interference. I mean, it's weird to say outside interference should be protected, but it's so meaningless here that they've almost killed it as something they can do for heat on special occasions. Notice there isn't even much heat for that crap anyway. Lethal's signature spots are all so contrived. I suppose his career has already peaked. -
Is this the best match that has ever happened on Monday Night RAW? Outstanding stuff. I was surprised at how long this went. I really liked the deliberate pace from the very beginning to get the match over as something special before they jumped into all the kickouts. They wanted to create a match where the outcome was in doubt based on Cena's previous record against Punk and they did a great job of making that point. So yes, some might complain about this being 2.9 wrestling, but it was a little deeper than that. The Wrestlemania title match was on the line (why I'm not sure, since Cena won the Rumble), so each guy was having to dig deeper than usual because of the high stakes. I also appreciated how clean their stuff looked compared to some of their other matches. Cena has really become great on execution. My MOTY at this point.

[2013-02-17-WWE-Elimination Chamber] The Shield vs John Cena & Sheamus & Ryback
Loss replied to Loss's topic in February 2013
Pretty great match with a hot start before settling into a more traditional tag, with both Sheamus and Cena having runs as great faces in peril. The crowd REALLY wants Ryback to come in and clean house, and they make them wait for it to the point it gets a huge pop when it finally happens. Wow, this guy has fallen far in the last year. The last few minutes of this are as hot as in any WWE match I’ve ever seen, with Sheamus being taken out, Cena being neutralized and Ryback being pinned. Such a great tease of a babyface miracle at the end only for one not to happen.- 5 replies

Probably the most nondescript of the Chamber matches I’ve seen, with little heat and no one really giving a great individual performance within the match. Things pick up a little bit when Henry comes in and goes on a tear, but a lot of this was really bland before then. The action is fun when they are down to the final three of Jericho, Orton and Swagger, but nothing great really. Seeing Swagger here and seeing him in 2014 shows how much confidence he’s lost in the last year. I enjoy the announcers scrambling to make excuses for guys breaking up pin/submission attempts since it makes no sense to do so in a match like this.

[2013-02-10-NJPW-The New Beginning] Hiroshi Tanahashi vs Karl Anderson
Loss replied to Loss's topic in February 2013
Tanahashi does the world title match layout really well. Tanahashi executes the world title match layout in a way that’s on the bland side. I’m a little bothered that the guy pushed as The Man doesn’t really carry himself like The Man. He just performs well enough within match layouts designed for The Man, but the matches feel underwhelming even when they are good. I think it’s because the performance isn’t really dynamic or special enough to match what they’re going for, if that makes any sense at all. I can give pretty high praise to a formula wrestler whose biggest strength is that he knows how to pace and layout a match in a way that gets the crowd involved, as I think those are great qualities for any wrestler to have. But I wish he had at least one other thing going for him in these matches so far. So once again, this was a very good match where he did a really good job of getting over his challenger and working a match that kept a consistent narrative around attacking Anderson’s knee. I can even get past Anderson not really selling the attack that much, if only because Tanahashi’s offense is so unconvincing. Those were some terrific near falls too. But I mean that more in an objective way than I do “Wow, this is something that really connected with me.” I’m struggling with putting my hang-up with Tanahashi in words, because I’m not sure I’ve ever thought this way about a wrestler before.- 8 replies

[2013-02-03-NJPW-Road to the Beginning] Masato Tanaka vs Tomohiro Ishii
Loss replied to Loss's topic in February 2013
No-selling of strikes is such a huge, glaring thing for me in this match that it negates the other great work they do. I could even forgive the unnecessary table spot - after all, that’s how Tanaka made his name. And Ishii’s sympathy selling to build to his big comeback was both outstanding and appropriate considering the beating he took from Tanaka, which was insane. But the endless forearm trading, chops and headbutts which aren’t sold even for a millisecond really brings down the match’s other good qualities in a big way. I can’t even call this a good match because of that, which is sad because I really wanted to love it.- 3 replies

I'll give you an example of what I mean. Madmen throughout wrestling history typically come in and outright say they aren't interested in titles. They are there for hire to take people out. They are there because they enjoy beating people up. Whatever the case is, it's explicitly spelled out. I know WWE likes to say everyone wants to be the world champ, but I feel like that's them not keeping a clear WWE Universe narrative and talking about the wrestlers as people instead of the characters. So maybe the Wyatts could be unique to their historical counterparts because they are interested in titles. Or they could be unique to everyone in the current WWE landscape because they aren't interested in titles -- they are there to maim and take people out or whatever the case may be. Either way, it's a missed opportunity.

At no point did Nitro triple RAW's rating unless he's talking about a quarter hour.
-
Vince Russo has always told the story about the South Africa RAW leading to a meeting the next morning where Vince handed everyone the RAW magazine and said this was the direction the company needed to go, and he was made the head writer at that point. The 3/3 show did a 1.9 rating, which is pretty bad too, but the timeline doesn't fit.
-
Every character needs explicit motivation.
-
I just wish they would come out and say that. Fans shouldn't have to do guesswork on anything.
-
A correction ... it was Ahmed Johnson vs Crush. It was the 4/14/97 RAW. The show did a 2.2 rating. The next week was Vince Russo's first week as RAW writer and featured the Bret/Austin ambulance angle.
-
My main problem with the Wyatts is that they've never really said what their motivation is for being in WWE. We get it, you're a cult. So why are you a cult in wrestling? That's not unique to the Wyatts. I used to think the same thing about the Undertaker when he was starting out many moons ago. But I wish somewhere in all that promo time he'd explain why he's in WWE. I also think it hurts their aura to talk about how they came through NXT. It humanizes them too much, like they are just aspiring WWE superstars playing a gimmick.
-
That was not the RAW that got killed. I mean, it lost to Nitro like every other RAW did, but the RAW that got killed was in South Africa in April and was headlined by Savio Vega vs Crush. For some reason, people think it's the Owen/Davey Boy RAW. It's not.
