  1. Another strong Lawler promo -- this one directed toward Jarrett and Dundee. He wants to know if they have enough guts to face Lawler and Travis.
  2. Percy Pringle introduces a highlight package of the Steve Austin vs Chris Adams feud up until this point. The week before, Steve Williams corrects the record - his name is Steve Austin - and gets in Adams' face when they are doing a promo. He calls Adams a coward when he tries to walk away from a fight and we have clips of an impromptu match. Austin ends up pulling a foreign object from his tights to punch Adams and secure the win. This week, Austin and Adams had another confrontation and they ended up having another impromptu match. Jeff Gaylord and Skandor Akbar end up running in and coming to Austin's defense and it looks like Austin has joined Devastation Inc. Knowing all the twists and turns this feud took, it's interesting to see the tipping point.
  3. The Horsemen do the hard sell for the Clash. They've done a good job hyping this show, but not really the rest of the card.
  4. WILD THING. One of the most memorable PPV hype commercials from my childhood. So bad it's good.
  5. The Good. The Bad. And The Ugly. Cool commercial with everyone on a "Wanted" poster with the wrestlers doing the promo popping off the poster in real time to do a promo. This is an extended commercial with some funny moments that is well-produced. The Samoan Savage tells Steve Williams (through translation on the screen) that his sister drinks coconut milk in many men's huts!
  6. Woman has purchased time on the Louisville Slugger tonight. She wants Ric Flair to come out and look her in the eyes and tell her no. Flair comes out quickly and tells her as respectfully as possible that if she wants to do something outside of wrestling, they can do that. But he's adamant that the Horsemen don't mix business with pleasure. Woman insists that he look her in the eyes and say the word no. She also says she will be at the Clash, but walks off before he can give an answer. Good segment.
  7. Lawler has drawn Dave Brown shooting a snowbird as they segue to the clip of Lawler attacking Jarrett at the conclusion of the Guitar on a Pole match against Travis from Dallas. They also show a clip of Lawler issuing an open challenge in Dallas after something happened (not sure what) that leads to Kerry Von Erich hitting the ring. Lawler distracts him long enough for Billy Joe Travis to sneak up behind him and break a guitar over his head. They double team Kerry until Jeff Jarrett makes the save and we've got ourselves a really hot impromptu brawl. Back at the studio, Lawler points how Kerry is so pumped up on steroids that he can't even form a coherent sentence. He cuts quite the promo. Now, we go back to Dallas and Jarrett and Kerry are being interviewed by Marc Lowrance. Kerry is wearing sparkly suspenders! Not good. Lawler has a response back at the studio for that one too. Lawler is fired up in these segments and is SO great! He points out that some people are blond on their mom's side, some are blond on their dad's side, and Jarrett is blond on peroxide. Kerry then hypes in a taped promo that he's coming back to Memphis, and he couldn't be happier if it snowed?? Ok. That aside, this is one of the more coherent Kerry promos of the year.
  8. Lawler, decked out in scrubs, laments changes in wrestling in the past few years. He points out that guys like Jeff Jarrett and Kerry Von Erich come along that weigh 137 lbs soaking wet, so they go out and find something called steroids. He talked about the health risks and benefits of steroids, and that wresters pump themselves full of steroids and think that's what makes them wrestlers. He name drops Hogan, Sting, the Road Warriors and the Ultimate Warrior, and points out that the steroids don't make them any better in the ring, they just kill their grey matter. He blames fans for thinking that's the standard, and he would actually respect them if they spent the gym. Uh, wow. He has somehow procured urine samples of Jeff Jarrett and Kerry Von Erich ("I have my sources") and assures the girls in the audience that this is not a taste test. He performs tests on both of them and confirms that they tested positive for steroids. He wants to lead by example, so he's going to take a steroid test on live television. Completely and totally surreal.
  9. The beginning of the most drug-induced promos to ever hype a Wrestlemania. I have no idea what either of them are talking about, but these are legendary.
  10. Short match, but good stuff with lots of excitement. The match is built around DiBiase trying to get Virgil to get the Million Dollar Belt out of the bag, and Virgil wanting no part of it. DiBiase pays off Slick and Big Boss Man to take the belt back. They walk off with the snake and the belt and suddenly Brother Love starts. The payoff is news to the Boss Man, and he has second thoughts about giving the belt back, because he thought he was just retrieving stolen property. DiBiase and Boss Man have words, and Boss Man ultimately decides to give the belt back to Jake and unlocks the handcuffs he himself put on Jake back in the ring. He returns to Brother Love and shoves Slick down and walks away on his own. Boss Man's babyface turn. I really like this angle.
  11. That match has no rep, while Vader/Cactus had a strong rep for a long time. That's the main reason.
  12. The Flair negativity seems to have evened out. For a while, it was out of control. From what I gather, even those who no longer consider him GOAT still consider him a reasonable part of the conversation.
  13. Billy Travis continues to impress. The guy is just way too talented to have never gotten a big break. Solid match, with Jarrett playing FIP and getting choked out with the secret chain. This isn't quite as good as you want, just because Jarrett getting worked over never really builds to a hot tag. Still worth seeing though.
  14. Is this Tom Zenk's career match? I know that doesn't say a ton, but I think this beats the Pillman match at Wrestle War easily. It's really good, as Flair plays subtle heel and puts Zenk over strong, even in winning the match. He chops Zenk so hard at one point that he makes his chest bleed. This is a great showcase for both guys, but this is a strong Flair performance. Flair hooks the tights for the win, to strongly hint that he's about to turn heel.

I've been really impressed at the quality of NWA TV matches, but almost every singles match included in full has been good at the very least. Great start to the year.
  16. I don't know if it's the very best Liger match ever, and right now, I'm not really interested in exploring that question. But this is an out of this world match and pair of performances. More hate-filled than any juniors match. There are a few highspots, but most of this is just a bloody brawl. This is deserving of all the hype it gets, and it's one of those matches that reminds me of why I'm a fan. If the match was great, what really put it over the top was Liger's disgust with himself in the post-match for having to get so violent to pull off the win. One of the best things about this match is that where most matches start off more sportsmanlike with more wrestling and then build to a brawl, this is the inverse. It started out as more of a hateful brawl, and when their hatred had taken them as far as they could go, they had to revert back to wrestling. The hate probably felt good, but skill was what was going to bring this home. And never have the nearfalls felt more appropriate in a juniors match than here. They are both desperate to end this thing, so they are going for every pin attempt possible. Liger is losing more blood by the second and both guys have taken a big beating. So there's this desperation to the close calls that is often missing from those types of sequences. That's why I love this match so much.
  17. This was just not at all as good as I hoped it would be. Owen has great highspots, but isn't really aggressive enough to have a good match in New Japan. He was an amazing athlete, but so much of what he was doing felt overly acrobatic and too graceful. Liger ceded most of the match to him, so the end result was really a soulless exhibition.
  18. Jake delivers a strong promo pointing out that the only way to get to DiBiase is to take his belt, so that's what he did. Good stuff.
  19. In a classic line, Dusty says with Sapphire, he has "a place to stick it".
  20. This is really fun, as Perfect and Genius play pinball for 10 minutes to some lame-looking offense. The whole match looks a little contrived at times, but it works and I can't deny that. It's a shame the Hogan/Perfect feud wasn't big, because they have strong chemistry in the ring. I love Genius taking notes during the match on his scroll! Hogan plays FIP. Perfect is the aggressor while Genius flutters by in front of Warrior, much to his chagrin. Hogan tags himself in right before the finish to hog all the credit. Warrior accidentally hits Hogan in the post-match melee, which causes some problems. Wrestlemania, here we come.
  21. I love Saturday Night's Main Event show openings! That's why they are all here.
  22. This crowd is SO excited to see the return of the Rock & Roll Express. Another excellent WCW TV match in January. This is laid out like you would expect, but it's given 20 minutes and is executed very, very well. Cornette takes a nice bump off of the dropkick. Shane Douglas - who is in a bad spot with the bookers at this point - eats the fall.
  23. Jim Ross asks Sting how he is adjusting to life in the fast lane, and he says he's handling it just fine. He also asks if he is prepared to beat Ric Flair for the World title at Wrestle War on February 25. Before he can answer the question, the Horsemen are out with women, perhaps binders full of them! Woman interrupts the party and makes an offer to Flair once again. She tells Flair when he's finished with girls, to let him know when he's ready for a woman. Good segment.
  24. Mean Mark Callous debuts in the NWA. The interplay with Funk and Long is really hilarious. Yes, med2089, this is the segment you think it is!
  25. Lawler shows pictures to prove that he knows celebrities. There is one of Rodney Dangerfield and one of Art Modell. He promises video footage of himself and Christie Brinkley next week. He is quite angry about his reputation being soiled. Dave Brown got him worked up!
