The same thing happened with Dominion last year: They sold out before my friend and I were able to get our act together and go buy tickets. It's possible that only the cheap 2nd floor seats (the only ones in out price range) are sold out... but usually the expensive seats go first, if I remember correctly. New Beginning in Osaka has an absolutely cracking card. I really would have been happy to see Mox vs MiSu and Hiromu vs Lee live in person.

Apparently tickets for New Beginning in Osaka are already all gone.

That was pretty damned close to being a bad AA match. The Renegade really was the drizzling shits in the ring.

- Jericho's post-match comments should be very interesting to anyone hoping for more NJPW vs AEW moving forward.

It's pretty rare for me to really care who wins and who loses. WK 14 night 1 had two such matches. This was one of them. I exhaled with genuine relief after every one of Ospreay's nearfalls. I marked out pretty hard for the ending. It's a great feeling to be taken on an emotional rollercoaster ride like that. As I said, it's pretty rare for me.

Oh, man. That just pushed my "That is awesome!" button again and again, from watching Fujiwara make his way to the ring, to Liger making a hot tag to Sano, to the interesting dynamic of two legendary old rivals from the past teaming up against two rivals from the present, to the actual feeling of sadness watching one of the absolute Greatest of All Time go out on his back. So good. So fitting.

I guess it's already been knocked down to the second-or-third-best show of the year so far by those other shows that Jericho and Mox worked this past weekend.
-
Yeah, that really did come across as silly reading about it. Like, out of all the bad-ass dudes in Naito's stable, only one of them could be arsed to run out to have his back. Still, though... the match itself sounds really good and I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Thanks. With that many people it's probably a little from column A, a little from column B. I did feel like the Osaka crowd was legit angry at the end of Dominion '19. Hopefully I'll get to form my own take on it tomorrow or the day after.

Did the very end of the show come across as poorly-thought-out watching live as it does reading about it? Kenta is not the worst first opponent for Naito, but I think it would have been preferable to give Naito his moment in the sun rather than rushing to set that up.

I was really hoping for a Tanahashi win to set up more NJPW vs AEW down the line. I guess we've got MiSu vs Mox to look forward to, at least. It's satisfying that they finally pulled the trigger on Naito. Not as satisfying as it would have been two years ago, but still satisfying. I had to go pick my daughters up from ballet, so I missed the last half of night 2. I wasn't patient enough to avoid spoilers, but I am looking forward to watching those matches when I get the chance. I'm hoping we get to see Naito defend one of the belts against Okada or Ibushi at Dominion (at least partly because I live near Osaka and I would very much like to have the chance to see that live).

I said yesterday that I thought Hiromu vs Ospreay set a new standard for Jr Hwt wrestling for the 2020s. I sincerely believe that MiSu vs Mox has the potential to set a new standard for asskicking.

Jericho, too, I believe. He's held titles in CMLL, WWA, WAR, and New Japan in addition to WWE, WCW, and AEW. I honestly can't think of anyone else at the moment, though.

Maybe Kensuke? IWGP, Triple Crown, and GHC Champion (among others), Stampede Wrestling International Tag Team champ with Sumo Hara, WCW US Heavyweight Champion, WWC Caribbean Tag Team Champion with Mr. Pogo. That's 4 countries. Although, he did win the WCW strap in Japan as part of an inter-promotional show.

That being said, I understand that both of these things can be true at the same time. You'd love to see it, but you realize it really isn't likely so you don't get your hopes up. Or, maybe you'd love to see it some day but weren't particularly hoping for it yesterday.

I tend to go with "A match where the wrestlers' main intent seems very much to be 'going for a five star rating' over and above any other considerations." To be clear. I don't think this applies to any of the big three WK 14 day one matches. I was just trying to show that I am not entirely antagonistic toward the viewpoint of Jmare, Superkix, and Something Savage (or anyone else) w/r/t generally preferring shorter matches (I just don't think that 'top of the card at WK in the Dome' is the best place to look for them). It was indeed an excellent example of how no-selling can absolutely be an effective tool in a pro wrestler's story-telling kit. It's hard to do properly and it's easy to abuse, but the once-prevalent idea that 'all no-selling is automatically bad regardless of context' is entirely incorrect. I'd argue that Ibushi's no-selling followed by insanely stiff striking was the most compelling stretch of that match. For a few minutes around the mid-point of that match, he absolutely did. I joked that Shibata was backstage cringing and saying "Yikes! Take it easy, there, kid!"

As the years go by I also find myself preferring a good 15-minute match with a little story to a half-hour-plus self conscious epic, 9 times out of 10... But come on, be real. Anyone hoping to see a sprint in the main event of Wrestle Kingdom in the Tokyo Dome is going to be disappointed every year.

That was just tremendous. Sheer insanity from Archer vs Mox onward. Great nostalgia trip with the Liger match, too. Between this and the excellent 1/1 AEW show, the year in pro wrestling is off to a rip-roaring start! Really looking forward to Naito vs Okada. How much do those guys have left after what they went through tonight? Hiromu vs Ospreay was the platonic ideal of a 2020s Jr Hwt match. Set the template for the coming decade. Some of the nearfalls tonight really had me going. I was genuinely pulling for Hiromu, and for Naito. That's kind of rare for me, to be on tenterhooks w/r/t who wins and who loses.

I really hope that happens, and that it leads to all kinds of cooperation between AEW and NJPW in 2020 and beyond.

I was really satisfied with how this match played out. Cody getting into deep water and needing Arn's coaching to pull out the victory let Cody take the W while making Darby look dangerous and getting Arn over. Good stuff.

I hope we get Tommy Rich and the great Bill Dundee as Memphis legends next week. Maybe a memorial tribute to Lance Russell and Sputnik Munroe? I assume there's no way Lawler shows up. Will Austin Idol's NWA connection keep him away, or might he show up with Aldis to set up a one-off match? Maybe Jimmy Valient? Who else? Any chance Jimmy Hart shows up?

I don't want to be controversial, but I think this was the best pro wrestling show of the year so far. Not just in AEW, but in all of pro wrestling.
