On the subject of wrestlers physical appearance
sek69 replied to Loss's topic in NMB Wrestling Archive
I don't get why people are acting like there's just a smidge of difference between Rey and other main event level wrestlers. It's like someone pointing out that Rey isn't tall enough to ride the good rides at the amusement park is somehow sacreligious. Fucking Domenic was almost as tall as him during that angle with Eddie. Another thing, pointing out that Rey is small doesn't mean that only hosses and roid monsters can be credible champions and/or over with the crowd. Like I said before about this discussion, when you can convince Taker that it's good for business to let someone almost two feet shorter than him win on a consistent basis, then you'll have your Rey Mysterio world title reign. -

Most of Ricky Morton's matches where against guys like the Midnights and the Horsemen, who were in his range size wise. Nikita and Krusher weren't really all that big either, hell Krusher is Barry Darsow, and no one ever considered Smash a hoss. -

That's somewhat of a loaded question since Stevie's never been booked as anything but a jobber or comedy wrestler. Anyone booked to face a career jobber would be expected to win. -

Rey could be jacked like Lex Luger, and it wouldn't matter (to me at least) because he looks like a midget against the hosses. You can pair him with someone reasonably close to his height like Eddie or Benoit, or even HHH, and it would look credible. I don't see him being matched up with giants like Taker, Kane, and Show on a regular basis and making it look credible. Yes you can have a match or two and do the David vs Goliath thing, but over the course of a few months as part of a regular program it kind of exposes the business if this 5'2 guy is getting wins over seven footers. -
TNA shouldn't try to force things. Right now Joe could rape a puppy and still get cheered, so they should just go with it rather than trying to make people hate him. They should have learned from Austin's disaster heel turn that if the fans don't want to boo someone, they won't. 75% of TNA's problems stem from not having enough TV time to get over all the talent and angles, which makes everything feel rushed.

Unless someone developed a steroid that makes you taller, I don't think Rey Mysterio plays a role in this discussion. -
I agree that Rhino could use a refresh, but making him look like everyone else in TNA isn't what I would suggest.

The guy's full of shit on some points (LOL @ Warrior outdrawing Flair), but his basic premise is pretty much correct. Flair post-1993 has been pretty sad to watch at times.
-
You could include Roddy Piper considering he was one of the biggest draws of the 80s and only got 1 short "thanks for your years of service" IC run.

Bruno Sammartino, who turned 70 on October 6: He looks better than he did when he was wrestling.

I might have been more right than I realize, since rumors have Dusty Rhodes as the new RAW GM.

Wrestling probably still would have been big, but not *as* big as Hogan made it. Vince likes to act like he could have plugged anyone in that slot and it would have produced the same result, when history shows that the whole reason Vince is Vince is because he happened to come across three of the most charismatic personalities in wrestling history (Hogan, Austin, Rock). Vince's embarrassing attempts to regain lightning in a bottle after the Hulk years illustrates that better than everything. If he was just a cog in the wheel, why was Vince so desparate to find the "next Hogan"?
-
The NWA elects a new President and BOD at their convention, and the last one was in October. Liger appearing on Bound for Glory illustrated how good NJ and TNA's relations were, Yukes taking over the company is what might put it in jeopardy since they make video games for WWE.

They've had a deal with New Japan, via the NWA.

It's probably a shock for anyone associated with the McMahon family to come across people who don't kiss their ass and think they're the greatest people ever.

Bullfuckingshit on your bullfuckingshit. If a heel gets cheered for doing heel tactics to a face, then the face isn't very good in his role.
-
Hogan didn't garner a sympathetic babyface reaction like others mentioned . Other than the time he got squished by Earthquake, I don't recall Hogan ever getting any babyface sympathy from the fans.
-
Basically they're looking for Sapphire, 2005/6 version.
-
Hogan was great at making the guys he faced look like monsters, but he really wasn't a great babyface per se. Jesse used to call him on it all the time, how he'd be using heel tactics and the face announcer would accept it because he's the great Hulk Hogan.

I don't know why, but it seems like no one who's started wrestling in the last 10 years can cut a promo with any emotion. I don't know if Hayes had any legit emotion with the Flair situation (I'm guessing not unless the drinking part hit home), but he sure had me sold with that promo. Isn't that the #1 rule of cutting a promo? You gotta believe what you're saying or no one else will.

I've been impressed with how they've been able to resist the temptation to immediately compete with WWE. You know they're itching to do it, but they've put more of an effort with building their own brand rather than doing the "OMG WWE SUX~!" bit for the whole show like ECW was prone to doing.
-
Kerry Von Erich from about 84 to 87 was right up there with Ricky Morton in terms of working babyface. I can't even imagine what it must have been like being in the Sportatorium for his matches. Sometimes even when you watch them on tape/DVD the shrieking girls make your ears hurt. It probably helped that some of the best heels in wrestling history passed through Texas at that time, but I don't think I've ever seen the crowd rally behind someone on a consistent basis like that since.
-
Didn't some of the hosses who ended up working in Japan make inquiries about TNA first? I know I remember reading about someone released from WWE that TNA said "no thanks" to, but I can't put a name to the story. I'm guessing that the HUGE~! announcement is something about getting more TV time, since they really don't need to sign any more talent. They need the TV time to get the guys they have now over.
-
It was funny that I was just watching World Class tapes and made a post about how good the Freebirds were at drawing heat, then Hayes comes out and proves my point. WWE should never have a wrestler who can't cut a promo as long as he's around.

It's a chicken and egg thing, is he voicing the opinon of the non-fan, or do non-fans have their opinons because of assholes like Rome?
