Jericho and Angle have been mentioned, people were ready for them to become headliners. Even when Angle had the belt he was about 5th down the pecking order. One thing that doesn't get mentioned all that often was WM2000. Sure there was some good matches that highlighted new talent, but the one thing that I don't see mentioned a lot is that it seemed a lot of people walked away from the event with a bad taste in their mouth. That was due to excessive McMahons in the main but also due to the fact that a heel went over on the biggest stage of the year. Fans had been conditioned for the past 15 years that the hero wins at Mania, and to see a swerve and the heel go over took the steam out for a lot of people. Then they made an even bigger mistake in the main the next year with Austin.

The Rumble wasn't what it would come to be in later years. '88 had Duggan winning and he went on to lose to DiBiase in the first round of the tourney at Mania 4. '89 had John Studd winning who was a guest referee at Mania 5. Winning the Rumble didn't do anything for Hulk, it might have done something for someone else.

It's also worth noting now that Vince is around the same age as Verne Gagne was in the mid-late 80's when he was clearly set in his ways and the world by and large had passed him by. It happens to older people.

CM Punk on Colt Cabana's Art of Wrestling
Dooley replied to goodhelmet's topic in Publications and Podcasts
For real. There's been too much of the "I know, but I'm not saying" schtick happening on the board lately. -
The idea that Vince can't fall off as a senior citizen from where he was as a young man seems silly to me.

I read through the first three pages of that thread, and so far the posters seem like massive dicks, not Foley. Holy smokes. I don't have an opinion on Foley as a person one way or the other, but that thread was all kinds of terrible. Makes me appreciate the level of discourse here.

Never heard an unkind word about Tito Santana.

[1997-12-22-WCW-Nitro] Hulk Hogan, Sting and Bret Hart
Dooley replied to Loss's topic in December 1997
And if they were going to go in that direction, they'd be much better served to go all-out with Bisch opening the box and Hogan doing the Brad Pitt "what's in the box?" wail. -
Would cable execs really even differentiate between the two though? To them, they're both just a non-WWF rasslin show. I don't think TNA's reputation would grant them much over a Jarrett start-up. Let's say they both walk in to pitch. Dixie: "We've been losing millions despite being on national TV for years". Jarrett: "I used to be a big star in the WWF and this is my friend Toby Keith". I disagree. TNA can point to nine years of drawing a 1.0 rating for Spike TV and having much bigger ex-WWE stars than Jeff Jarrett under contract. That track record counts for something. It counts for absolutely nothing because Spike couldn't sell an ad on the show. That's not something you want as part of your pitch.

[1999-12-06-WWF-Raw] Big Bossman and Big Show's Mother

I hated this. Just overwrought and uncomfortable. Get to the casket surfing already so I can laugh. -
So much ballyhoo!

Don't blame the whiskey. Never blame the whiskey. Also, been watching some 88-89 WWF and good lord do I still hate Brother Love. I thought maybe the gimmick was one of those things I'd appreciate more with the benefit of age and hindsight, but nope. Still terrible. Can't stand the voice, the red face or the dopey music playing in the background while they're trying to get major angles over. Probably my least favorite "talk" segment the WWF did and yet it was their central one of this era.

I got a chuckle out of the pre-match bit where Giant runs over Hogan's bike with a monster truck (foreshadowing!). Giant's doing his overwrought manaical laugh with his arm still hanging out the side like he's cruising around on Sunday afternoon. Hogan stops mindlessly beating on the door, reaches up and grabs Giant's arm and Giant breaks his supervillian act for a second and gets a look on his face like "hey lemme go!" before pulling his arm away. Match had no suspense whatsoever and I much prefer Boondocks' alternate scenario.

[1995-09-23-WWF-Superstars] Diesel & Shawn Michaels and Owen Hart & Yokozuna

"Nobody makes fun of Vince McMannequin but me!" Vince pouting when Cornette interrupts him was funny. -
[1995-09-18-WCW-Nitro] "They Call Him Mr Wonderful"

Easily one of my favourite entrance themes ever. Agreed with this gimmick being a goofy version of the Narcissist, and a little humor makes the character work.- 12 replies

With this one segment, Nitro made Raw look and feel antiquated. The shocking Luger debut, a fun Flair-Sting by numbers match, Arn looking like a tough guy, even Norton seemed like a big deal because Savage came out to confront him. Huge difference in pace and tone to what Raw was offering.

This was better than it had any right to be. Honestly, if they avoided completely stinking the joint up most people would have been happy but they managed to put together a really smartly booked and entertaining match. The crowd was frenetic for Vince to get his after a year of screwing with Austin. Austin beat him like a drum (as he should have) and Vince's bloody face of desperation and Austin's reactions to him were perfect. I wonder how much Vince taking the table bump off the side of the cage was to one-up Bischoff getting powerbombed off the stage by Nash. I liked Show's debut through the ring but agree that Cole announcing him as "Paul Wight" was terrible, as no one had heard that name before. Then he got the one night run as "Big Nasty" before finally setting on Big Show.

That's a cool story. Random as fuck as well. A few years ago I worked in Amman for three months and there were a couple of channels with UFC and WWE on every night. In the city there are MMA shows almost every month. Yeah, that made me intrigued, so I looked around and found this on KM I live about 20 mins away from the arena where the riot occured, which still stands and has a cool history as a place where a lot of iconic rock bands played in the 50-70s That reads like the "banning" was kayfabe. I don't think Beefcake belongs on the list. Some fun Dream Team matches and I really enjoyed his match vs Savage on SNME in '89. Vs Hennig at WM6 was good too. He could be carried. I wouldn't put Honky anywhere near worst wrestler ever either. That just flat-out ignores the shittiness of say.........Ted Arcidi.

The Trial Of Eric Bischoff (Podcast Question)
Dooley replied to JaymeFuture's topic in Pro Wrestling
Only Hogan had creative control. The rest of the upper card just refused to do things left and right because Eric allowed it. As for the guaranteed contracts, they may not have been his initial idea but Eric clearly didn't have a problem with it and embraced the system. He was routinely criticized for "pushing guys to their contract". ie - big contract, big push. mid-level contract, mid-level push. Jericho talked about it in his book. Since he was the one making the offers, it's hard to not hold him responsible in that regard. -
This does seem like a really petty thing to be upset about. People chant at events, it's a thing. Someone mentioned rock concerts, are they seriously implying that they've never heard anyone chant the name of the band or the singer/guitarist/whatever during a song break or before the encore? Another mentioned boxing matches, there's tons of examples of fans chanting a fighter's name. People chant for the hosts of TV shows when they're in the live audience. Is the argument that these people aren't enjoying Stephen Colbert appropriately by choosing to chant his name rather than just applaud? "Let's go Red Sox" or [insert team name here] is heard at almost every sporting event. A couple of years ago, during the NHL playoff series between the Rangers and Caps, the fans in each building even had a chant war going. Caps coach Bruce Boudreau said the fans at MSG weren't as loud as the Caps fans. So the next game, the MSG faithful showered the Caps with chants of "can you hear us?". Not to be outdone, when the series went back to Washington, the Caps fans responded with "we are louder!" chants. So were these fans not enjoying playoff hockey correctly and not involved in the atmosphere? Anywhere you've got a crowd organized, there's a risk of a chant breaking out. Get over it.
