  1. Star ratings for fights are ridiculous because it's not something prepared ahead of time like a meal, a movie, or a wrestling match. If someone lands a massive KO in the first 30 seconds, is that plus stars for the finish or minus stars for lack of length? Do grappling exchanges count for more stars or striking exchanges? Are two guys exhausted in the third round but still "swinging away" rewarded for "showing heart" or docked for being too exhausted to fight technically? Is a fight with clinical precision rewarded more than something like Frye-Takayama? It's one thing if you're saying "I had fun watching the fight" or did not, much like other sporting events. But if you assign stars to it, it turns into "eh, i would have liked to have seen a little more ground work before the big KO", which I think most of us can agree is beyond ludicrous.
  2. Sorry, but the idea of rating an actual sporting contest is stupid. If somebody won via a KO in ten seconds, does that make it a zero star fight? You're not actually being series, right? http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/30453/the-10-greatest-world-series-games http://www.mensfitness.com/life/sports/10-most-memorable-mlb-world-series-wins http://www.sportingnews.com/mlb/story/2012-10-23/greatest-world-series-yankees-dodgers-reds-red-sox-mets-braves-twins I could literally post another 100 links to people rating the Greatest WS Games of All-Time... without putting much effort into finding those 100. We could do the same with most every major sporting event. In fact, people in the first *two days* of this season's NBA were talking about how many really good games there were. People do it all the time. I'm 100% confident that you "rate" sporting events as well on some level. Star ratings for fights are stupid.
  3. I remember Piper taking on Savage on house shows when he came back in '89. The Apter mags even had a cover story on it, saying something like "Piper beating Savage scares Hogan".
  4. What's more likely? HHH changed his tune on Warrior or saw that he's in a position to make money off of Warrior's legacy now? More likely HHH was a fan of the fucking body builder and back when he wasn't in charge he bashed him like all good employees were told to. So he was being a company guy then, but he wouldn't be a company guy now even though he's almost the head of the company now? I'm confused. It's possible that HHH was always a closet Warrior fan and was honored to get squashed by him all those years ago. I just haven't seen anything that would suggest that.
  5. One of the side effects of cocaine use is paranoia. Just sayin'.
  6. What's more likely? HHH changed his tune on Warrior or saw that he's in a position to make money off of Warrior's legacy now?
  7. But this wasn't for the Warrior hatchet job DVD. This was for a Wrestlemania retrospective deal. I think it may have been the WM2000 "Wrestlemania all day" because I remember HHH having the belt with him at the time.
  8. Seriously? HHH is even on WWF-produced videos bitching about WM12 and calling Warrior a "total dickwad".
  9. I have the bluray. They go out of their way to show that he enjoyed talking with his fans and doing charity. In all fairness, where did that talk come from? The only instance I remember is in Bret's book. And with wrestlers, you never know how much truth you're getting. Like, maybe he was missing a fight or something and couldn't meet a kid and all of the sudden it turns into Warrior hates meeting sick children and avoid them at all costs. It's difficult to tell when somebody has an axe to grind. Piper said something along the same lines. He told a story about how he (Piper) would try to avoid being noticed in airports, wearing hats and sunglasses, while Warrior had a full-length neon "Ultimate Warrior" coat on but would tell any kids that asked for autographs to buzz off.
  10. Roadies were never booked quite right in the WWF, but seeing them get the midvard comedy treatment here was just sad.
  11. I love how he frames the first WM as putting Lauper into the mainstream as much as Lauper helping the WWF. Man, he really hates Lauper. He also infers that Andre didn't like Hogan, which is the first I've heard of that. Apparently Harvey Whippleman was the photographer that blinded Hogan at KOTR '93, I had always assumed it was Cornette.
  12. Is Toby Keith involved in this?
  13. Yes, Bret, he willed himself out of this world and away from his loving wife and daughters - all because he got to shake the ropes one more time in front of wrestling fans. I don't think Bret's intimating anything that others haven't in this thread.
  14. Wasn't Hogan's plan for Beefcake and the Nasties to lead the face contingent against the NWO? I remember Beefcake cutting a sit-down promo along those lines. Thankfully, sanity prevailed.
  15. That's a stretch. One TV network wouldn't want to throw a competitor under the bus? If they make TNT look bad, it hurts their position for future NFL rights and helps their own.
  16. And Lesnar's no compete was deemed to be wholly unenforeceable.
  17. Counting things like the Miller Lite cat fight or matches between valets with little to no training almost feels like cheating.
  18. I hated (and still hate) Paul Bearer but I can concur that he did some of his best work as a mouthpiece for Kane in that era. I saw the point of him initially managing Taker as a heel and being a mouthpiece for the zombie. But as soon as taker turned face in '93 I found him completely useless until the heel turn. To be fair, I'm not really high on babyface managers in general.
  19. The same Corino who when was made champ many felt the promotion had lost its soul? Was that really a talking point at the time? Seems like an odd complaint coming not so long after a Justin Credible reign. That was my first thought in reading that. If anything, Corino and his whole "King of Old School" schtick was the perfect heel for the ECW mutants.
  20. And what always gets forgotten is that right before the match, the "burned out" crowd gave Austin the biggest pop of the show. Taker/Shawn didn't somehow rob them of their voices; HHH and Orton just worked a match no one wanted to see. Lack of a buffer match had nothing to do with the match sucking. The idea that crowds need a buffer match might be the dumbest thing invented by WWE. How many people have actually been to cards and thought "Man, I sure wanna see a shit match right now to cool myself off?" I know from being at WMX8 that it didn't matter what happened after Hogan-Rock, people were going to be chattering to each other about what they just saw. Hell, a bunch of people left the building afterwards.
  21. Also in wrestling talk, the boys will often continue to call a wrestler his gimmick name even if they no longer use it. Even the office would continue the practice privately. As for the Bulldogs, I would bet they were paid on a higher percentage (by Vince) because they were in demand and could get work elsewhere. Also don't be so confident that the numbers he put in his book are completely accurate. He is a wrestler and rounding up is common. Also, the event DK was referring to was WM3, wasn't it? One would think payoffs would have been on the large side for a show that did that gate and PPV business.
  22. Maybe he's just looking for some company.
  23. What's this story? I didn't start following stuff on the net til 2004 so there's probably a lot of well known dirtsheet stories from around this time I have no idea of. After Pillman died, Vince addressed the troops and admitted that some of his ideas weren't working as well as he'd like and encouraged the talent to be more pro-active in their character development. That led to more "reality-based" characters/promos and less stuff like Thurman Sparky Plugg and TL Hopper. I thought that was after that RAW with the European tourney final that got killed against Nitro. In Foley's book he mentions it was after Pillman died.
  24. Giant turning was a last-minute thing (as with many things in WCW). The plan was Bulldog jumping but he turned around and re-signed with the WWF. Since they'd already had DiBiase tease it the previous week, I guess they felt they had to do *something*. But I agree, Giant really wasn't a fit with the NWO.
