Honestly, old-timers' hostility toward Colon is probably due more to him being a lousy payoff guy than to Brody.

Actually, steroids weren't added to the Controlled Substances Act until 1990.

So the R&Rs are the only ones who made it in (EDIT: scratch that, Ray Fabiani also made it in). I continue to be baffled by Ivan Koloff's failure to get inducted. What possible argument is there against him? Also, it should be noted that Brock did great among reporters and historians but poorly among active and former wrestlers. That should put the final nail in the coffin of the "wrestlers are insecure legitimacy marks" argument.

I wouldn't say that HHH ruined Goldberg since the bloom was already off the rose by that point. But Goldberg didn't get over by getting screwed and looking vulnerable. He got over by destroying everything in his path. There was no need to reinvent the wheel.

I don't think there's anything about WWE's business practices I wouldn't believe. They've entered the Tyson Zone for me. If some newz site claimed that midcard pushes were based on whose tears Vince thought were the most delicious, I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand.

So according to Ricardo's shoot, Seth Rollins and Summer Rae both ended up with heat backstage for the grave offense of using ice packs. Apparently, they hadn't been around long enough to deserve them or something. This fucking company, man...

All great matches are fun, but not all fun matches are great.

It's increasingly likely that I'll have Kobashi above Kawada on my ballot. I had always taken it as an article of faith that Kawada was the smart one and Kobashi was the dumb one when it came to stuff like structure and selling. But I'm starting to think that the opposite is closer to the truth. For all the talk about how Kobashi/Sasaki is a dumb match, it's differential calculus compared to Kawada/Sasaki.

Different styles of the NWA touring champ
NintendoLogic replied to Johnny Sorrow's topic in Pro Wrestling
The Observer back issue that was put up today contains Dave's Fritz Von Erich obit. Fritz was NWA president for a time in the 70s, so Dave talked a bit about how the NWA champion was booked. Under Muchnick, there were screwjobs and time limit draws, but the champion always won decisively in the end so there was no doubt that he was the best in the world. Under subsequent presidents, screwjobs became the rule rather than the exception, and the prestige of the belt steadily declined. -
I would define a fun match as one that you enjoy while you're watching it but have no real desire to revisit after you're done.

I figured this was worth a bump since we're almost at the the end of the year. At this point, I have no idea what my MOTY for 2014 is. I'd say it's between Shield/Wyatts and Atlantis/UG, with Okada/Ibushi as a dark horse pick.

You know, giving away the Network for free for the one month the creative team openly doesn't give a shit might not have been the smartest move.

I've decided that AJ vs. Samoa Joe at Turning Point is my official pick for best match in TNA history. That may sound like damning with faint praise, but it's legitimately a really good match.

Wasn't it Lawler's idea for Hawk to no-sell the piledriver?

"Well, the important thing is that you've found a way to feel superior to both."-xkcd Not taking sides or anything, it's just that the quote came to mind when I read that.

No AWA. The list only includes matches that are currently available on the Network.

WWE can fuck right off with their long-ass lists where each entry has its own page. There's no way in hell I'm clicking through 100 pages, especially if I'm going to be "rewarded" with insights from the likes of David Shoemaker.

You have to figure that some day WWE will have to contend with someone whose silence can't be bought. Maybe that's why they're so desperate to keep Rey under contract.

Yeah, Tenryu was even better in his 50s, and he wasn't anywhere near as good as Flair in his 30s. Also, I remain mystified by the love for the Wahoo match. I'll watch it again and see if it does anything for me.

Yes, there are plenty of great sub-20 minute matches. But there are far, far more great matches that go longer than 20 (I'd say between 20 and 30 minutes is the sweet spot). Not only that, the overall quality of those longer matches is far higher. I'm confident that if you made a list of the 20 greatest matches of all time that go longer than 20 minutes and one of the 20 greatest sub-20 minute matches, the median quality of the former list would absolutely smoke that of the latter. The fact that most wrestlers are incapable of reaching those heights is immaterial. That's like penalizing Metallica because most guitarists can't play Kirk Hammett's solos.

From the paragraph on Teddy Long's shoot interview in the current issue: I don't even know where to begin.
-
Most guys in WWE could not put on an engaging 20 minute match. Then most guys in WWE suck, which is why they need everything laid out for them by road agents. That's ridiculous. I know the less-is-more mindset is in vogue these days, but it's more often the case that less is just less. There's a reason virtually every great match in history has been at least 20 minutes.

I just saw Ishii/Goto. I lost almost as many brain cells watching it as Ishii and Goto did participating in it.
-
I think being the only guy who knows how to pull his punches in a promotion full of dumbasses who like to concuss each other is a strong point in his favor.

The issue wasn't that the spot was botched. It was that he booked a spot that was too dangerous for WWE.
