  1. I've decided that I want to compile a list of the best matches centered around the participants beating the holy hell out of each other. I don't mean brawls or deathmatches, I mean straight wrestling matches centered around stiff strikes with stuff like matwork kept to a minimum. Off the top of my head, I'd say that Hansen/Kawada and Vader/Takada would certainly fit the bill. What else? Bonus points for matches without endless strike exchanges because I hate that shit.
  2. I was actually going to bring up Paul Hogan as a comparison. The first Crocodile Dundee movie grossed more than all the Brat Pack films combined, and the second one grossed over $100 million as well (in 1980s dollars, it should be noted). Was Paul Hogan a bigger deal in the culture than Hulk Hogan?
  3. I really don't see the argument for peak Ringwald being more famous than peak Hogan. Yes, movies are a bigger deal in our culture than professional wrestling. But Ringwald was a pretty marginal figure in that medium. Hell, I grew up in the 80s, and I had never heard of her until I was a teenager. Honestly, the soundtracks to her films were a bigger deal than the films themselves.
  4. The way Loss defines it, Hogan is not a pop culture icon. But neither is Molly Ringwald.
  5. I think this is my biggest area of disagreement with Dave on this subject. Being ahead of one's time should be celebrated, not denigrated.
  6. I already covered the second part, you willfully ignored it as you do with any post I make that you dislike. The first part has been covered a multitude of times on this forum as well. Ummmm....OK. I guess I should clarify. You did offer explanations, but I didn't find them entirely convincing. They explain why he wasn't voted in, but I don't think they adequately explain why he wasn't even seen as a serious candidate for the most part. I could go into greater detail, but arguing points with you is like a duel to the death, and I don't have the stomach for that sort of thing. But rest assured that I'm not willfully ignoring you. As to the first part, I get that wrestlers can have agendas. But that's the whole point of having multitudes of voters: to neutralize that factor and allow the wisdom of crowds to prevail. Someone thinking that Kane should have a shot at the HOF because he's a nice guy and doesn't work stiff can get him on the ballot, but it can't keep him there.
  7. To be fair, all the Abdullah/Brody matches I've seen were solid sub-10:00 DCOR brawls. But when you've seen one, you've seen them all.

  9. I had a dream last night that I got into an argument on this board over whether Rob Schneider was a racist. I think that's a sign that I spend too much time here.
  10. I wasn't trying to compare Rose and Colon as candidates. I was just pointing out that character issues don't single-handedly turn you into a joke candidate. Anyway, I'm going to once again that the WON HOF's prohibition on being inducted multiple times is completely asinine. The Four Horsemen and the Holy Demon Army should be locks for any pro wrestling HOF, but they're not eligible because Flair and Kawada are already in as singles performers.
  11. I was paying attention, specifically when it was brought up that he was highly regarded as a worker. And if being a scumbag were an absolute disqualifier, Carlos Colon wouldn't be knocking on the door every year.
  12. At the risk of sounding like a troll, why shouldn't the opinions of peers and contemporaries carry more weight than those of guys watching footage decades after the fact? Also, if Rose was so highly regarded by his peers, why isn't he a serious HOF candidate? It's not just that he cant get in, he can't even stay on the ballot.
  13. I don't think it's so much generalities as it is that the people who are anti-Tanahashi have already hashed out the opinions either earlier in this thread, the Tanahashi vs. Cena thread, etc. I haven't seen much hashing out in either this thread or the Cena/Tanahashi one. The most substantive argument I've seen is that his offense looks weak.
  14. I don't think Tanahashi has accomplished nearly enough to warrant HOF inclusion, and I'm increasingly indifferent toward him in general. But I find it interesting that pro-Tanahashi posters are expected to make the case for him in exhaustive detail while anti-Tanahashi ones can get away with expressing generalities.
  15. More faked heart attacks: Fred Sanford or Kevin Nash?
  16. I think Tyson is the perfect comparison. Neither he nor Hogan are pop culture icons, but they both have near-universal name recognition that transcends their respective sports.
  17. There is no company in the history of the world that would have declined giving Rock the belt if he wanted it, especially with his plan ending with him doing a clean job to their top star. The goal of the program was to make Cena a bigger star by having Rock give him the rub. It was a complete failure in that regard.
  18. A stale but stable company doesn't throw truckloads of money at Brock Lesnar to work three matches a year. Nor does it make a Hollywood actor who hasn't wrestled full-time in over a decade its world champion.
  19. Dwayne Johnson may have a higher Q rating than Hulk Hogan, but to the public at large, he's an actor who used to wrestle rather than a wrestler who became an actor. My guess is that if you asked a bunch of non-fans to name a professional wrestler, they'd say Hogan 9 times out of 10.
  20. Hardys/Serial Thrillaz from OMEGA.
  21. The problem a lot of people have with the Bryan storyline is that it represented the exact opposite of radical change.
  22. I don't think what happened last night was a panic move. The dirtsheets were reporting at the beginning of September that the plan all along was to blow off Bryan/Orton at HIAC and to have Orton in the title picture through the Rumble.
  23. First, Bryan was supposed to go over at NOC. Then it was supposed to happen at Battleground. Then it was supposed to happen at HIAC. Now it's going to happen at Survivor Series. Or maybe the Rumble or even Mania. Is there a cutoff? Or are people going to insist that Bryan getting the last laugh is just around the corner in perpetuity?
  24. Bret was the same size as Randy Savage.
