LOL Bad Medicine. It was half a classic. Wagner did everything you could hope for on his end. Controlling the pace, telling the story and doing his best to carry an average opponent on this day. The 26m flew by with the Mexican dominating proceedings. Some funky Lucha matwork and he was strutting around like such a badass. Kanemoto was just hanging on in more ways than one. His execution was sloppy and move selection sometimes ill advised. But he was playing the role and the fans got behind the homeboy. I was willing on the Doc instead. He deserved to win the tournament so much it was ridiculous. Yet Koji put him away with a messed up Tiger Suplay for an anti-meritocratic outcome. This could've been great with a better native, or even Kanemoto when he was in his prime.

This is still such a blast. Everything fell into place with the booking, the brawling and the shenanigans. Like Childs says it's ridiculously screwy and OTT on paper, yet in context it was spot on. The deck was hugely stacked against Austin from the start, and that was before the mid-match rule changes. The brawl over the arena was really good. A general rule about historical wrestling is that if it was fresh at the time then it usually feels fresh watching it back now. No matter how many times you might have seen the same thing done since then when it feels stale. They fought over car wrecks (obv) and Austin bleeds. There was also a beatdown phase as they did everything they could think of to make him look vulnerable. There were a few moments when it lost a little steam if I'm being ultracritical. The ending sequence was inspired and unforgettably culminated in McMahon's lifeless hand counting down the 3. Everyone involved played their roles well and the action was strong. Unfortunately you could argue it was too good as they kept trying in vain to replicate its success.

This had it's moments but ended up being better on paper than it was in the ring. The counters were too quick, the end came too soon, and the flow was disjointed by the referee adjusting Han's knee pads intermittently.

A fine way to launch the Academy. It started off as an offshoot GAEA promotion that just used to run one or two shows a year. When GAEA shut down in 2005 a number of workers moved on to Oz Academy and it became a regular promotion. Since that time they've been putting out recycled latter day GAEA style stuff that has been uninspiring in the extreme. But let's go back to a time when Joshi Puroresu was alive. For the opening half the action was decent but didn't stand out to me. Then there was a move where a diving headbutt got countered by a slap. It was 10X cooler than it sounds in writing and was the spark that got things rocking. Carlos was my favourite performer with her spirit, sharp moves and submissions. All four brought it to be fair and there were some choice moments. It could've done with being a few minutes shorter as they overcooked it a little. It went 22m with hardly a pause for breath.

Showing over 22m of a 30m draw was generous by GAEA TV standards. I think that the 2nd bit of clipping did telegraph the outcome. It was an interesting match with both positives and flaws, mainly related to the length. There were fast paced counter submissions on the mat and some meaty kicks if the opponent strayed from that position. There was plenty of intensity in this fierce next gen rivalry. Kato was the one who impressed me most here, her ring presence was strong. It's a shame her knee's gave out on her as she'd have been right up there with Satomura in the years ahead. The downside here was that they didn't do the best job of constructing a 30m match due to inexperience. The selling of exhaustion towards the finish was way OTT. They both acted near death. Overall I'll call it good.

[1998-09-21-RINGS] Tsuyoshi Kohsaka vs Mikhail Ilioukhine
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in September 1998
This was nearly all matwork and there was some impressive technique on display. They displayed creative thinking, quick movement and smart reversals. At 12m it had the right duration as well. Kohsaka was the star and in the form of his life at this point in time. His Russian adversary more than held his end up.- 6 replies

What kind of show am I watching here? I thought that the Goldust BDSM the previous year was more than freaky enough, but it wasn't for Vinny Ru. After having Sable walk around the ring topless I guess he wanted the porn to go in a different direction. Viewer discretion is advised.

[1998-12-17-WCW-Thunder] Eric Bischoff and Ric Flair's Family
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in December 1998
Yeah it's difficult to watch Reid Flair in this when you know he'd become a fucked up drug addict who died at the age of 25. -
[1998-12-07-WWF-Raw] The Rock & The Undertaker vs Steve Austin & Mankind
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in December 1998
The Undertaker crucifies Austin. We fans are being made to pay for our sins. I think this shows a progression for the cartoon version of the Undertaker being corrupted during the Attitude Era. That's the most generous way I can put it. -
[1998-12-07-WCW-Nitro] Scott Steiner and Wild Cat Willie
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in December 1998
Steiner beats up a mascot to show what a badass he is. I remember talking to some poor guy dressed in a mascot costume once saying it was the shittest job he'd ever had. The worst part wasn't the kids punching and kicking you, it was their parents doing the same!- 4 replies

[1998-12-27-WCW-Starrcade '98] Goldberg vs Kevin Nash
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in December 1998
Nash books himself to end the streak at '173' and become WCW champion. The result killed the Goldberg phenomenon. 8 days later something truly horrifying would occur, but the terrors of WCW '99 will have to wait for another day. -
This rounds off the years Chris Jericho fun. He was my favourite wrestler at the time and it's still great to watch now. Here he is ably assisted by Ralphus as he tells the tale of how Konnan tragically won the Television Title. And even worse is that he gets to keep it.

A surefire way to dampen any comedy segment is to have Michael Cole tell you how amused he is. Like the NOD parody this was floundering a bit before they had a professional comedian come out and save the segment. Shawn then puts over the talent before the Rock nicely finishes off with some old school catchphrases.

I'm glad they told us that one of the dolls was Shawn Micheals as I wouldn't have been able to guess. -
[1998-11-30-WWF-Raw] Steve Austin, Kane and Paul Bearer
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in November 1998
I couldn't help but think of Sid at one point during this. I thought they were going to have a comedy moment with Bearer getting stuck in the drain but he went all the way down. Payback is hell. -
[1998-11-23-WCW-Nitro] Ric Flair, Eric Bischoff and Barry Windham
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in November 1998
It would've been a really good swerve if Windham hadn't turned here. Not for any storyline reason, I'd have just been surprised.- 4 replies

The fight scene was so hilariously corny that it would've made the whole thing worthwhile even if the rest of the date sucked. As it happens there were other highlights with D-Lo being the driver. The whole thing was quite fun, and the formula would be repeated in later years. 007 Dean Malenko anyone?
