  1. Not a bad match. Nothing much, but there's good psychology here. Jake never lost that. Lawler is hilarious on commentary giving JR a hard time about the Fake Razor & Diesel stuff & making light of Jake's personal demons. Austin gets the win here after Lawler spits Jim Beam in Jake's face as a distraction. The Mankind vignette is fucking awesome. He's digging at the ground with his bare hands screaming "If I dig, he will come!" The build for Buried Alive has been fantastic.
  2. Awful angle, but JR's promo is amazing. It's scathing & likely 100% true. The fans eat it up & cheer him for it. They could never get the fans to hate JR. I loved the moment where the fans initially popped for the Fake Razor, but then a hushed silence fell over the crowd once they recognized the guy was a complete fake. Fake Razor gets attacked by Savio Vega to close the show. Really terrible storyline to be doing in competition with Nitro even if I love Ross in this.
  3. This is incredibly dumb. Forget the pettiness of it all, how about pointing out how stupid it is to promote the opposition's talent. This is way worse than the Fake Razor & Fake Diesel stuff because at least JR's promo is awesome.
  4. Very good match. Mero busts huge a switching springboard moonsault early. The guy is fun to watch. Faarooq has a great spot where he walks up to the top rope with Mero on his shoulders & falls back into Samoan drop. Hot finish with Sable & Sunny getting into it & Patterson (who was the special ref) getting in between them. Mero gets a hold of Sunny's loaded purse that she gave to Faarooq & nails him with it. He then hits a shooting star press to win the IC title. Really spirited match where Mero, especially, put in a lot of effort. Nice post-match interview with Mero who thanks God, Sable, & Mr. Perfect.
  5. Incredible match. Totally chaotic feel with Michaels going out of his comfort zone to survive & Mankind portraying his insane character to a tee. Mankind's entrance is awesome. Him sitting up out of the casket is a great visual. The worked shoot spot early on is awesome. Shawn just starts pummeling Foley with punches. They're the best punches of Shawn's career. All of the big spots are amazing & work really effectively as momentum shifts throughout the match. Mankind punching the chair resulting in Shawn realizing it hurt him & attacking is great. HBK doing finger manipulation! I'd never think he'd do something like that. The table bump is legendary & the follow up superkick is awesome. The finish is actually pretty great with tons of heat. Taker coming out of the casket is tremendous. Bearer's reaction to that is golden. Shawn gets kissed multiple times in his post-match celebration & Vince goes nuts putting him & the match over. Certainly a WWF MOTY candidate & probably a top 20 WWE match of all time.
  6. Ok tag match. Sunny gets humiliated again in the pre-match with her provocative poster to Owen & Davey getting marked to make her look like a she-devil or something. This is more of a backdrop for Sunny to seperate from the Smoking Gunns beginning that team's dissension. Owen's spin kick is timed peferctly right at the three count to prevent it from being broken up. Beautiful. Owen & Davey Boy's win gets a nice pop. I guess fans were tired of the Smoking Gunns by this point.
  7. Pillman rips Philadelphia in a funny moment. He introduces Owen as his guest who insults Bret. Owens says Bret is scared to come back to the WWF because of Steve Austin. Austin comes out & cuts another great promo on Bret this time essentially calling him a piece of shit. He says they will eventually lock up & he will beat his ass. Austin is really confident in his character. It's great to watch unfold. All three guys are such great heels here. The segment ends gloriously with Pillman shouting "Philadelphia sucks!"
  8. Good match. Owen is quietly having a good year. Some strong near falls down the stretch. I always enjoy seeing Mero bust out flip planchas & such in 1996 WWF. Owen uses the cast but Mero kicks out. I don't think the fans realized Mero got a shoulder up. Referee Jack Doan blatantly sees the cast shot by Mero but tries to whip his head around like he didn't see anything. Mero gets the win & the fans are bit confused probably because they thought the ref saw Mero use the cast. The mid-match Gorilla-JR argument is stupid. Talk about your competition's top talent why don't yah. I got a kick out of seeing Austin & HHH milling about on a safari. Bret's interview is good. He's an underrated promo. Usually seems like a real person saying real things. He calls Pillman & Owen liars saying he hasn't agreed to an interview at Mind Games, cleared things with Owen, or decided on if he's coming back to the WWF or not. I forget he worked the South Africa tour.
  9. I love these videos of the WWF experience. Sid having a tug-o-war with an elephant is amazing. Hey, that looks like Biker Taker! Perfect teasing an in-ring comeback again. I loved Austin's smug look in what seemed to be some sort of WWF parade. Piper randomly showing up in WWF weeks before his Halloween Havoc appearance is prime Monday Night War era. The Backlund/Sheik stuff is amusing. Backlund is a wonderful crazy man. His misuse of vocabulary is always funny. Sheik just rambles incoherently for a few minutes & it's hilarious. What a bizarre segment.
  10. Not much of a match. Solid, but unspectacular. Austin gets DQed for pulling the referee into Mero. The post-match brawl is fun. I always enjoy those. The importance of this match is more to do with Pillman on commentary. He claims to have gotten Bret Hart for a big interview at Mind Games & hypes that up. I'm really enjoying the start of this Bret-Austin build. I'm excited to eventually here Bret's response to Austin's challenge.
  11. "Loose Cannon" Brian Pillman is a bizarre choice for an interviewer. Great, straight to the point promo by Austin. He's really gathering steam as an overall performer & presence in WWF at this point. He makes the big challenge to Bret Hart, claims he's the best there is, was, & ever will be, & takes a shot at Bret's pink & black attire. I also liked that he threatened to whip Pillman's ass too after being cut off teasing that feud as well. The Bret-Austin feud is underway.
  12. Not sure if I found the right commercial (watching via WWE Network & didn't find it while watching this particular episode). I searched on YT & did find a cheesy Shawn video from 96 with porn music though. Hard to take Shawn seriously as a tough, fighting champion sometimes with this stuff.
  13. Lame. This is actually well produced but this gimmick is even more silly considering the shift of the WWF product at the time. I realize that statement might sound absurd after this followed a Taker segment, but Taker had earned good will with the audience for over 5 years by this point & was consistently evolving his character to match with the times.
  14. Bearer never really gets to explain his turn. However, this segment is very effective in getting over that Bearer has joined with Mankind & his gloating about The Undertaker's "death" is great. Mankind is cutting a promo on his match with HBK at Mind Games when the lights go out. The Druids bring Taker to ringside & lay his lifeless body in the aisle. Bearer is great mocking Taker & telling fans to bow their head. I loved that he called it a "wake." Taker sits up in an awesome moment & raises his hands up causing the turnbuckles to light up with pyro. Bearer & Mankind retreat as Taker enters the ring & does his pose. Really cool segment that does a great job of introducing the newest layer of this feud with Bearer's turn & Undertaker being out for revenge. I agree they should have waited until at least Mind Games to bring Taker back, but this was still effective & that's what matters.
  15. Awkward match. The pacing is too slow at the start. Shawn getting a shine is expected & should happen but things seemed to be going in slow motion. I liked all the dives but I think they could have picked up the pace a bit. Once Vader took control the match got great. The powerbomb on the floor is a great transition. Vader manhandling Shawn & catching him on his comebacks is awesome. I loved when he pulled him up off the "skin the cat" & just launched him into the mat. Shawn's fit isn't that bad. He's visibly pissed off the remainder of the match though. I laughed when he pushed the camera back after the tumble to the floor. All the restarts really clogged up the momentum of this match. The fans still popped for Shawn's comeback & Vader's missed moonsault, but this is way overbooked. Take away the restart's & the ref bump we have a great match. Instead it's a good one that's hurt by booking.
  16. This is awesome! I loved the production of this. The camera following Taker into the boiler room. The commentary being mostly silent so that the audience at home can feel the room. The brawl itself is great. The stuff they do is pretty standard but everything feels visceral. It's two guys who hate each other fighting in a fucking boiler room & it works. Mankind's bump off the ladder is insane. The filming makes it because watching I wasn't sure where he was going to land. Had a kick out of the other wrestlers cheering on Taker or Mankind based on their face/heel alignment. Loved the desperation of heaving garbage & random things while trying to make it to the arena. Mankind pouring scolding hot coffee on Taker is nuts. The teases at the ring apron are great. Good lord that concrete bump by Mankind is sickening. The Bearer turn is executed wonderfully. That was a hell of an urn shot at the finish. Mankind's outro music is awesome & made for a great mix with the big Bearer turn. The druids coming out to carry Taker away is fucking awesome. Great moment. This entire segment is a great piece of business. It couldn't be replicated because something like this is so unique. I loved it though. This feud is great.
  17. Really good & energetic match. These two have great chemistry. I think I'd rather watch a random Shawn-Owen match than a random Shawn-Bret match. That leg sweep counter to the enziguri was sweet. Liked Shawn's shine a lot. The head scissors to the floor/plancha combo is great. HBK could work really well from underneath. His selling is strong & he bumps big. I like how Shawn uses different moves to set up the elbow. I've seen him use a body slam, piledriver, & now a powerslam as a transition for it. Hot finish with Vader getting involved & Shawn giving the superkick a second try after a weak first attempt. Good idea to make sure the finish looked good. Post-match is great with Shawn removing Owen's cast then taking Cornette's racket from him & whacking him with it. Vader destroys Shawn to great heat. Strong go-home for Summerslam.
  18. We finally catch up with Bret on the Wrestle Vessel. Good segment. Perfect is indeed an odd choice to be the one hunting down Bret during his hiatus. Bret seems content hanging out with his family. I don't blame him. He says give it 2-3 months for him to come back & give a "yes or no" answer.
  19. The Sunny thing is amusing. Lawler saying "Just don't get my lap wet!" is funny. The Ahmed video is good. This was probably it for him. Really unlucky. His not too unintelligable in this interview. I liked how genuine this interview was. I felt for the guy.
  20. Good segment. Making your World Champion seem like an actual human being is always good. I thought Shawn was pretty good here. He seemed genuine for the most part. Nice job of building up the Vader program & teasing a new program with Bret.
  21. Watching Mark Henry powerlift is awesome. I forget he punked out Lawler in early 96.
  22. Really good TV tag title match. Billy Gunn is a pretty good stooge bumper. Shawn has a nice FIP section. I liked the part where the Gunns were kicking him in the head with their cowboy boots. Shawn takes some big hot shot bumps into the ropes. Ahmed's hot tag is great. Man, he was over. Ahmed gets the ropes pulled out from behind him & here comes Faarooq. That's got to be the worst look ever. The beat down is actually pretty good but it's hard to take it seriously with that fucking helmet. The crowd did go wild at the close with Faarooq & Shawn brawling.
  23. Fun way to open the show. Sunny gets Shawn's birthday cake she made for him slammed into her face by Ahmed. Big pop from the Seattle crowd.
  24. Awesome match! All action with a ton of heat. The babyfaces are insanely over. The guardrail collapsing during Shawn's entrance is a famous moment. Pretty nuts. Sid's offensive flurry at the start is amazing. The place comes unglued! All of the pairings were really fun to see & they never slowed the pace down. Shawn's selling is fantastic in this & I loved the build to the Sid hot tag. He'd been getting chants all match. I have to point out how awesomely nuts Ahmed's offense is. He nearly killed Owen on those rolling German variations & took Vader's head off with a clothesline later on. I liked Vader getting the pin on Shawn to set up the Summerslam match. The post-match is fun even if the babyfaces looked like assholes for attacking Camp Cornette without being provoked. I would have been completely fine with it if the heel's had instigated the fight. Shawn's dive is great. This match shouldn't be overlooked because it is pretty great. Probably a top 5 WWF match in 96.
  25. Sid's promo is awesome. Sid at his best is really entertaining because he's got a great look with tons of charisma. Cornette sells Sid's return like death. He does his best to put this over as a big deal. I like Sid much more than Warrior so I'll take this replacement.
