  1. There wasn't a whole lot that was particularly memorable here as much of tthe way seemed to be lacking any focus or build rather trading and going on cruise control until the finishing run. Which means that this was still great by most standards but just good for these guys. Some great, high level counters that these guys work to avoid the other's big moves which is no surprise given their skill and familiarity, but they pull it off so smoothly and string them together at such a pace that its still really something to see even outside the context of a huge match. Some fun fighting spiritTM near the end that many may not be a fan of but I love in limited doses. For some reason I also enjoyed seeing them shake after the match. Maybe because they knew where things would head later in the year? ***3/4
  2. Loved Tenryu's try at a tope rope frankensteiner here and may have just loved Sasaki's more, because I never saw that coming from him whereas nothing Tenryu does at this point shocks me as I've come to expect a few pleasant surprises from him every time out. Tenryu made this with his pacing and grit, but kudos to Sasaki for sticking with the plan and being an able dance partner. ***3/4
  3. This is easily the hottest I've ever seen a Tokyo Dome crowd. Right off the bat this feels totally different and more intense than anything on your typical pro wrestling show. Between the gloves and Ogawa & Murakami acting like legit American heels rather than anything subtle you'd usually find in Japan this is just insanity throughout. Iizuka is KO'd early by Murakami and shortly thereafter the whole thing is broken up and we seemingly get a DQ! That won't fly but with the NJ roster looking like they might actually kill the outsiders it wouldn't be the worst idea ever. Inoki seems to restart things by the power of his big stick. Hash kick Murakami (who's trapped in an armbar) straight to hell and calls in Ogawa. I know Ogawa isn't exactly a trained or refined wrestler, but his charisma and almost chickenshit (when selling) monster heel routine fits perfectly in this type of insane environment. But clearly not someone you can just squeeze into your standard match. Hash tries punches from the mount but is caught in a triangle. Ogawa follows with STOs for both. Murakami with an awesome judo throw on Iizuka and immediately goes into punches, while Hash & Ogawa brawl outside. Iizuka eventually finishes Murakami with a choke. More madness follows the finish. If Brock Lesnar were booked like this, his 3-4 appearances every year may just be special enough to move business. I know the Ogawa phenomenon fell apart due to Inoki / booking issues, but man does this feel like something that had quite the shelf life. ****1/4
  4. Ole promo selling Slamboree with stars from AWA, NWA, South America, Australia and more. He mentions Mr. Wrestling II, Verne Gagne, Crusher and Thunderbolt Patterson. He finally teases the Four Horsemen appearing there. Flair & Arn are in tuxes on set with a bunch of ladies, where they talk about Arn vs. Windham at Slamboree before Windham cancels his appearance on set. They're pissed but pop bottles.
  5. Cornette ranting about Armstrong trying to screw the Bodies and being a fraud and then outs Dixie Dynamite as Scott Armstrong, who comes out and takes off his mask to reveal one hell of a mullet. Armstrong looks a lot better and actually imposing without the glasses. He finally slugs Cornette as we're building towards what feels like a a legit climax.
  6. This is a great point. It was pretty simple but a great way to make things very interesting without needing to do anything spectacular. Meanwhile, this Sullivan stuff is great and his madness here doesn't seem too over the top or outrageous at all. Apparently Nighstalker turned on him?
  7. Can't argue with the masses here, as this was a great, great match. Was this the first time (at least on the yearbook ) that the Blondes were introduced as such rather thn as Austin & Pillman? The characters are fully developed here as well with Pillman shooting film. Pillman's work with the foreign object was basic and awesome. Yeah, its not an AJPW tag but you don't have to rise to that level to put on a great match. It was interesting to see Pillman worked over by Scorpio and Austin not there for the corner in a spot you'd usually see from the babyface team. Scorpio was gold here -- offense was seamless and crisp while bumping like a champ. The Blondes really great at building heat throughout the match and making you want to see their comeuppance. Cheating on an abdominal stretch and telling the crowd to be quiet? A+ for that. Scorpio finally tags in with a minute to go and he's on fire but can't close it before the bell for a draw. Loved this. Had it as my #3 US MOTY behind only Vader/Sting and Vader/Flair. ****
  8. Man Shango is huge. The action we have here is surprisingly very good. We get Lawler punches and a dropkick, and then fire to win the Unified Title which feels a whole lot more appropriate here than in the WWF.
  9. Everything about the presentation here was phenomenal. From Vader's pre-match promo to the heat with Nakano looking like a mini next to Vader, to just how much like a shoot this felt. Give Vader a ton of credit as he didn't approach this similarly to what we're used to from him in WCW but rather made it feel like a shoot. Nakano gets a pop on a choke but is almost immediately thereafter knocked down and out with strikes for a brutal TKO. An almost perfect debut and hell of a match given how short it was. ***1/4
  10. This was really terrific. While Tamura would eventually earn his rep as an all time worker, Sano was an absolute boss here. He connects on some nice suplexes while mixing in arm submissions along the way. I liked how they integrated the high spots with the subs and even had an awesome slap exchange. Tamura eventually finished it with a submission of his own after multiple awesome exchanges by both. ***3/4

Bryan, Reigns, whatever. Taker back to the face Wyatt? Who cares. Are we getting Miz vs. Mizdow at Mania?!?
  13. I didn't mind the finish of HBK/HHH in '04. The blood was nice and I thought the finish was well executed. The match was just a lot longer than it needed to be given where they were going, which is saying something given what they'd do 6 months later. Cut out some of the aimless filler and I'd have thought it was damn good. As it was I enjoyed it.

I thought tonight was the best job they've done making Reigns feel like a big since perhaps the breakup of the Shield. Problem is there's just nothing about him that feels like a Mania main eventer. This isn't Batista in '04/'05 where you had the slow tease of his turn and people were dying to see him against HHH. It feels like he's being forced into a position people have zero appetite or demand for yet.
  15. This was great. I like that even back then they were calling it Sports Entertainment. Consistency!
  16. Yeah that's an awful, terrible way to look at it. Why can't it be left to the fact that certain people make for good babyfaces while others are natural heels? Koscheck's nuclear heat back the day wasn't because he was black but rather because he was an absurd dick on TUF. If him and Leben switch roles on TV I'm sure he'd be the babyface coming out of the show.
  17. Not exactly the place for it, but I think his role in turning things around was as much a single-handed effort as any. If you want to include another performer there I can see giving the nod to Vince for arguably the greatest heel ever and being the perfect foil for Austin's character, but he was pulling a ton of weight.
  18. Looking forward to cherry picking some matches from these shows this week. Last year's were fun and breezy. Nothing blowaway but a really enjoyable way to mix up the styles.
  19. I wonder if the "don't subscribe because of lack of TV access" is getting no love on PWO because its a community of people who will seek out wrestling wherever they can get their hands on it and aren't going to be swayed by big screen vs. small screen. Which I find entirely possible. If you're WWE you have to hope more people become friendly to purchasing & viewing content in that manner as they become more comfortable with it because otherwise this thing is going to be facing a pretty strong headwind.
  20. I might've loved it if I watched it in or close to '87. By the time I was old enough to appreciate good wrestling, which was years after having this touted as a GOAT, it seemed like a good match. Say about 3-3.25 stars? I wonder if its similar to Michaels-Razor at Mania 10 in that it felt state of the art when it took place but following years filled with matches that met or exceeded the original, which loses much of its luster when looked back upon.
  21. 9 of the 10 best ever from the last 18 months? All 10 from the last 2 years?

  23. Not sure Angle/Benoit makes my top 10 all time matches from the promotion, but very possibly my favorite from at post-Mania 17 until maybe Cena/Umaga, if not later. Speaking of Mania 17, Rock/Austin is definitely on that list for me.

  25. I've been PS3 from day one and if I didn't have that I'm not sure I would. I don't mind watching wrestling from Japan on the computer since there's really no way for me to get it on the big screen, but if I didn't have a way to blast the network on the TV I doubt I'd be willing to pay for it.
