I don't recall who put it out there first, but I think the biggest factor is that just about every modern match of interest is either available live or shortly thereafter. Then a few minutes later there's a new match or show to check out. There's not much time for anything to breathe or stand out for too long these days. There are of course exceptions as there are always standouts, but we're not in an era where there are a few hours of live domestic TV and quarterly/monthly PPVs that are supplemented by infrequent tapes you order from Japan. Its all coming at you at once. But I've got no doubt that with the benefit of hindsight when we look back at this or any other recent year, certain matches and moments will absolutely stand out as classics even if we're not already appreciating them as such.

Yes, she was there with Mike Bennett as part of the talent that was sent over for the G1 Finals and a few big shows in the fall, I believe the November PPV (which at least had Fish & O'Reilly, can't recall if Bennett was there) and certainly the tag league.

Also wanted to add I've enjoyed this. Most fantasy booking leans too far to the fantasy side of things for me, but I've enjoyed how grounded and plausible all of this has been. Can envision all of it with rational decision makers.

HHH vs. Bryan at Mania Shield vs. Wyatts at EC Suzuki vs. Styles G1 Okada vs. Nakamura G1 Finals. Those are definitely my top 4. Not sure about the order yet but I think I prefer all 3 singles to the six-man.

I'm definitely watching UFC as its the first fight in a couple years I've been excited about and on a slow weekend it'll be a good chance to drag a couple friends over. Even without UFC, I'm debating how to approach this show. No chance I'm staying up to watch it live, but if I'm buying it I want it spoiler free. It'll be tough to make it through the day online without catching those on twitter or elsewhere. So basically the options are to order and DVR, then watch in the morning, or look to catch it online sometime next week. Plus I still haven't made up my mind which commentary I want to watch with, which will also impact things.

Jericho has a big time "happy to be there" look on his face. Oro is noticeably quicker than everyone else and it really stands out. Awesome Santo-like dive by Cicolon Ramirez on Felino as part of the first fall's finishing run. Casas a little too blatant setting up Jericho's moonsault for the fall. Second fall feels really disjointed, even by lucha standards. Ramirez pins Felino in the 3rd to take the match for the technicos with a jacknife on a power bomb. Oro was definitely the standout here. ***1/4

[1993-04-30-CMLL] Ultimo Dragoncito & Orito vs Felinito & Ultratumbita
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in April 1993
Decent finish to the first fall with simultaneous German & northern lights suplexes by Dragoncito & Orito. Big low blow by Felinito on Dragoncito in 2nd fall. He's pinned shortly thereafter. Filinito & Ultratumbita seem to win by countout in a really weak finish. This did not do much for me and really dragged. -

[1993-04-30-AAA-Triplemania] Konnan vs Cien Caras (Loser Must Retire)
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in April 1993
Funky costume for Konnan, who's jawing with Jake Roberts at ringside. Caras throwing knees off the ropes. Konnan wins first fall on a roll up with a weird count by Tirantes. Always get a dual cam on Jake which suggests he's playing into the finish. Caras wins second fall quickly with a weak roll up. They spill outside, where Jake throws Mascarita Sagrada into the ring, and then Caras sticks up for him and gets into it with Jake. Konnan then starts slugging with Jake, and subsequently loses by countout. Wrestling pretty weak, but its really just an angle. Didn't come off anywhere near as hot as when I read about it years back.- 9 replies

HBK defending IC title against Duggan next week. Cheap heat on NYC. No Sherri. Clips of HBK attacking Perfect after Mania. Officials hold Perfect back allowing HBK to get in a cheapshot kick, and Perfect chases him off. Fun promo.

They're riding into the WWF to face the good, the bad and the ugly. But not again on the '93 yearbook.

[1993-04-24-WWF-Barcelona, ESP] Bret Hart vs Bam Bam Bigelow
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in April 1993
Prety big crowd here. I thought this was one of the better WWF matches of the year so far. Bigelow sends Hart out with a shoulderblock while Hart returns the favor. Bigelow posts Hart's back and continues his attack on it with a bearhug and Sammartino backbreaker. This was a really simple match but I thought it was very well focused and both excelled in their roles. Hart teases a comeback by scoring a back suplex but he's too worn down to capitalize. Bigelow eventually misses the headbutt which sees Bret work towards the sharpshooter, which is blocked, before the pinfall. Very fun match. ***1/2 Loss touched on it above, but in going through the yearbooks I'm not seeing much that makes a case for Hart as any type of GOAT candidate. I'm sure he'll make my top 100, but I can't see him finishing very highly. Just not a ton of stellar matches. -
I think bringing HHH & Steph back is necessary for Mania season as they're solid characters who can factor into numerous storylines that unfortunately simply would languish without them. That being said, this felt like an incredibly weak way to get there as I'd rather it be teased and dragged out for a couple weeks. At least save their first return appearance for the next show and try to build some intrigue there rather than drop it 11:15. On the other hand, DANIEL BRYAN. For whatever reason he makes a mark out of me and many others. People genuinely like him and you get excited and invested in his storylines and seeing him perform. That's otherwise wholly absent and has been pretty much since he went on the shelf. If 1997 Shawn Michaels had this guy on his TV he'd know where to find his smile. I'm cautiously optimistic he's winning the Rumble, but could see other scenarios play out. As long as he's a featured player the show will be a lot more interesting on a week to week basis. I'm happy to have that. If they do run with him this year, its also probably for the best as it'll give Reigns a chance to develop in the ring and on the mic before trying to crown him again next year when he'll hopefully look ready for the part and have people genuinely excited rather than curious about it. The Rollins match last night did zero favors for either but hopefully they can heat it up enough to have that be a hot match going into Mania. A Mania with Bryan/Brock, Cena/Rusev, HHH/Sting and Rollins/Reigns sounds pretty damn fun, and that's leaving aside whatever walking dead/true blood nonsense they conjure up for Bray, along with spots for Ziggler, Ambrose and the inevitable, slow burning Miz/Mizdow.

Fall Guys: The original expose now on Kindle!
WingedEagle replied to Bix's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Thanks for the heads up. This will happen. -
The Ryback bit was a lot better when I heard it on Jericho's podcast and I have to think would've gotten over more if delivered as part of a sit down interview rather than in this format. But it was still different from the standard fare, and while the crowd seemed to drift, they popped at the parts designed for it so maybe it has a chance. On another note, Lawler just teased Bryan retiring which means I am now very, very stoked for that part of the show.
 -
So originally I was sure that we were getting some very disappointing news about Bryan because you wouldn't run a presumably hot angle on a holiday week Raw. But if they're opening with a package recapping Edge's retirement due to injury, I can't imagine letting that overshadow Bryan. Not that my guess is worth a damn, but I'm at least optimistic now.

[1993-04-24-WCW-Saturday Night] Vader vs Cactus Jack
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in April 1993
Cactus bodyslams Race prematch and they start brawling outside the ring. Cactus nails him with a chair, while Harley goes up for another bodyslam on the floor and Cactus's elbow. What a trooper. Stiff punches by Cactus, back suplex then Vader catches him coming off ropes for big slam. Hits a couple Vader bombs with punches mixed in, then a dumb spot where he tries to jump feet first on Cactus who obviously rolls away. Cactus goes for a somersault dive but Vader rolls away and Cactus gets the floor. Vader powerbombs him on the concrete floor, which I somehow thought looked reasonably safe given what it was. Cactus is counted out, then stretchered out. Brutal, but more disjointed than the first match. ***1/4- 15 replies

Pre-surgery, Tammy is very pretty and well spoken. Of the New England Sytches, who everyone should've heard of. Filed a sexual discrimination suit against SMW for not employing women. She goes to Wellesley, just like Hillary Clinton did. She'll start as manager, and maybe onto promoting, then commissioner. I already enjoy her more than Cornette.

[1993-04-24-WWF-Superstars] Update: Lex Luger and his steel forearm!

[1993-04-24-USWA-TV] Jeff Jarrett vs Brian Christopher
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in April 1993
Lots of punching by both, but nothing too great here. I suppose it plays well for a studio match. Rex King & Steve Doll in to attack Jarrett, Billy Joe Travis seemed to be waiting for the run in and they attack him as well. Pretty poorly done. Lawler eventually saves. -
Promo that seems to focus on softball while including a brief mention for a Monday night show and Sherri.

				Greatest Upsets In Professional Wrestling?
WingedEagle replied to Fantastic's topic in Pro Wrestling
Rewatched the finish of Lesnar/Taker today. Very comfortable saying I've never seen a crowd that shocked at a finish. They weren't yawning after that last F-5, but were simply waiting for something else to bridge things to Undertaker winning. Then he lost and it was the wrestling version of Chris Webber calling a timeout he didn't have, Charles Smith blowing 4 layups or Leon Lett. Just incredible. Were the announcers tipped to the finish before it happened or no? -
There was plenty of good to be found in 1993 WCW if you're cherry picking. But on a week to week basis its not hard to see why that TV was excruciating.
 -
Off the top of my head, a few I enjoyed include the PPV matches with Cena and Hardy, Michaels on Raw, Undertaker at Mania and Summerslam, Orton on Raw during the rated RKO period and the Backlash '07 four way, I also loved his out of ring work on Smackdown for most of the time he was on top there. One of my favorite characters.

Han is ridiculous. Everything is so smooth, fluid and just looks so natural. But I'm not breaking any ground here. Between his varied strikes and seemingly endless ability to go for submissions that don't look at all ridiculous you get a nice look at what Han can do. Fun and original match that probably plays better on a yearbook than on a show of similar action. ***1/2
