[1992-04-18-SWS] Ric Flair vs Genichiro Tenryu (2/3 falls)
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
This was good for reasons other than what I would've expected, but never quite reached the levels I was hoping for. Then again if it had, it'd probably be a pretty well touted affair. Good chops early which is no surprise given who's involved. Flair works the knee and mixes in some heel spots much moreso than you'd think from Flair in Japan. After being pinned by the figure four in the first, Tenryu does a great job selling it the rest of the way. Flair's animation and character really shined in this setting. The pacing and story brought things down, even considering expectations coming into this. ***1/4 -
I sat down to watch this one night thinking I'd bang this out in 30-35 minutes and maybe have time for Flair/Tenryu afterwards. I was wrong. It was fun to see this and probably a hell of a spectacle if you were there live, but not something I'd seek out again or recommend to someone. As others have noted, you can get a whole lot more with less from this crew. The highlight for me was actually the opening with Kobashi & Kikuchi vs. Fuchi & Ogawa. This was some of the best heel work I've seen from Fuchi/Ogawa as they looked like a regular Tully & Arn out there. Kobashi put on a show going over an hour here. Kudos to the crowd for staying hot right through Kawada joining for the stretch run. ***1/2

Apparently I wasn't as high on this as others. I liked the heel work and the faces played their roles great as well. Sagrada bumped like a champ and I was perhaps most impressed with Misteriocito here. But it didn't resonate as more than a very good match, nothing too memorable. ***1/4

I've seen the final from two weeks later a ton and have always loved it as a classic. Somehow I'd never seen this one but it was just phenomenal and really primes you for the tourney final. Samurai slaps Liger before the match to establish the story and he continues heeling throughout the match, throwing chairs and again at the finish. Samurai tears at Liger's mask, a spot which would be prominent in the rematch. Liger's shine is great, with a jumping lariat, superplex, flying elbow and tombstone before Samurai hits a huge somersault dive to the floor. Samurai finally takes a a clean pin after a low kick and rana. This was awesome. ****1/4

This felt like a high octane exhibition. Scorpio looked like a stud here, which was often the case for him against Benoit and especially during this period. Really nice roll through sequence for the pin. *** 1/4

This was a fantastic sub 10 minute match, one of the best I've seen. Its also no surprise that one of Casas' best performances in Japan comes against someone well versed in his style. Casas strikes me as the type of wrestler who if he were a chef, would likely run the single greatest Applebees or Diner in the country. He can take pretty average ingredients (time constraints, card positioning, opponent) and make something excellent out of just about anything. Put him in a first class steakhouse and he'll likely deliver there as well. ***3/4

[1992-04-14-WWF-Munich, GER] Randy Savage vs Shawn Michaels
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
So much to love here. Savage selling the knee on his way down the aisle and consistently thereafter, Shawn bumping like Shawn, Sherri putting on a *clinic* and reminding me why she was so great. Savage actually sold the knee for so long before hitting the elbow at the finish that I was convinced HBK would roll away. The post-match heel attack was nice, but how about Lord Al Hayes saying a review of it could result in a lifelong disqualification for HBK? Amazing. ***1/2- 28 replies

[1992-04-13-WWF-London, ENG] Ric Flair vs Davey Boy Smith
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
Davey Boy has a huge pop in the intros in a match totally made by the crowd. Bulldog wins clean with the powerslam. Flair really put him over strongly and the crowd loved every bit of it. **3/4 -
[1992-04-11-SMW-TV] Heavenly Bodies vs Brad & Bart Batten
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
After all of those vignettes and build up we finally have the debut of the Bodies. It may have been an extended squash but I thought it was pretty great, with the Bodies looking phenomenal on offense in this style and making fast tags while the Battens were a hell of a canvas for what they were doing. ***1/4 -
[1992-04-11-SMW-TV] Paul Orndorff vs Hector Guerrero
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
Orndorff is pissed at being a wildcard in the title tourney, and then in the match he rolls through a crossbody for the pin. The piledrivers after the match on jobbers and then Guerrero on a chair were the best thing here. Early SMW on here outside of the Bodies skits & debut didn't click much with me but this wasn't bad.- 13 replies

[1992-04-11-USWA-TV] Brian Christopher vs Tom Prichard
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
Pritchard wins the Southern title in a quick, fun match. Too short for greatness but what we got was a very good tv match. Afterwards Christopher claims it wasn't a title match and eventually retains because no contract was signed. He then lays out Pritchard with the belt. Fun angle. **3/4 -
[1992-04-11-USWA-TV] Brian Christopher vs Tom Prichard
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
Christopher plays a great southern heel. The Moondogs eventually attack Pritchard with a chair. -
We start with clips from another great brawl at the MSC with more boards, chairs and garbage cans. The Moondogs are selling for most of it and take a bloody beating before a Dog pins Lawler with Lee holding his leg. After that, Embry is in studio to give one of the highlight promos of the year so far, calling out just about everybody in this angle. Lawler & Jarrett come out as Embry wants to team with them, and he proceeds to tell them that they need him because he's the nastiest & lowest thing around. He is absolutely on fire and a great addition to this feud.

The Moondogs attack Embry during a squash, splashing him and using weapons. This whole story is so simple, violent and effective.

[1992-04-05-WWF-Wrestlemania VIII] Hulk Hogan vs Sid Justice
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
I dare someone to find a well produced video package I don't want to watch. After that we jump to Hogan kicking out of the power bomb, hulk up, boot, slam, legdrop and the garbage DQ. Papa Shango is out followed by Warrior to a massive pop and some gratuitous posing afterwards. I don't recall the details, but was the original plan for Hogan to get his win back the following year vs. Warrior? -
[1992-04-04-WWF-Superstars] Hulk Hogan career retrospective
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
Thought I'd hit this earlier but apparently not. Vince is out in a tux to pay tribute to Hogan. We get highlights of Mania 3 vs. Andre and 6 vs. Warrior. Love the bit about the four pillars of Hulkamania and Vince's facials. Hogan isn't sure this is his last match but Vince thanks him as though it is.- 13 replies

[1992-04-05-WWF-Wrestlemania VIII] Ric Flair vs Randy Savage
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
This holds up a lot better than Piper/Hart and is still a great watch today. Savage is super over as a babyface. Savage takes an awesome bump over the top and then sells for a while, coming back with some great punches that are still my some of my favorites in the business and no I don't care about Jerry Lawler or anyone else. Give me Savage's punching any day. Savage axehandles Flair into the railing where he uses the opportunity to blade himself. A Savage elbow gets 2 and Perfect pulls him out. The finish with Flair going for the figure four and slapping him was great and fit perfectly in this context. Afterwards a bloody Flair kisses Liz in a great spot and follows it with an awesome promo in the back. Savage spits some of his own insanity for good measure. **** -
[1992-04-05-WWF-Wrestlemania VIII] Interview: Lex Luger
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
Luger is beyond gassed here. Can you imagine them going to these lengths to sign and promote someone who couldn't debut for a year today? -
[1992-04-05-WWF-Wrestlemania VIII] Bret Hart vs Roddy Piper
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
Definitely a seminal moment in Hart's rise as a single. Piper heels a bit early spitting at Hart. Hart fakes a shoulder injury to set up a small package that ratchets things up a bit. After another cheap shot by Piper Hart blads himself and works underneath for a while. We get an early five moves of doom but the sharpshooter is blocked. Piper thinks about cementing his heeldom with a chair but can't bring himself to do it and then comes the finish. Whether its because I started watching a few years after his big run in the mid 80s and thus didn't have any connection to him, Piper is someone who's never done it for me. Good fire, quick on the mic and clearly charismatic but I never saw him as anything special. Still a good match due to Hart but I'll always remember it because of him. ***1/2- 38 replies

I don't think you can have anything worse than an above average mix with this bunch which makes WCW in this time such fun to rewatch. Arn bumps like a champ for Windham early and then Rude works underneath for a stretch, something he probably doesn't get enough credit for. After that we get Windham working as FIP for a while and absorbing a ton of great heel offense and double teams before Austin brings in a chair for the DQ. I'm still waiting for them to start pushing War Games during these segments. ***1/4

Cornette is at one of the best hotels in town and we still don't get an appearance from the Bodies. Good stuff from Cornette yet again. Back in studio, Ron Wright's health is being upset while DWB delivers a great heel promo setting up Volunteer Slam before Brian Lee comes out to confront him. I like DWB's schtick as a heel in SMW so much moreso than as a face in Memphis.

[1992-04-04-USWA-TV] Eric Embry vs Dirty White Boy (Stretcher)
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
The Moondogs are out to attack DWB while Embry watches. Soon enough he enters the ring and is knocked down and attacked by the Dogs before Lawler & Jarrett are out. Nothing bad can come from including Embry in the Moondogs feud. -
[1992-04-04-USWA-TV] Jerry Lawler & Jeff Jarrett and The Moondogs
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
Richard Lee interrupts a studio match as he wants Lawler & Jarrett suspended for excessive violence. Lawler & Jarrett are out shortly to attack and strip Lee before the Moondogs are out with chairs and boards. Typical fun brawl in this feud.- 11 replies

[1992-04-04-WWF-Superstars] Interview: Ric Flair & Mr Perfect
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
Nature Boy! Flair tells us Liz was there and loved it once, and wants back in now. Perfect promises a centerfold at Mania which I don't think was even ever mentioned again.
