JJ was just so painful around this time. Probably just bad material, but hard to believe he's the same guy that managed the Horsemen.

Nice little angle to set up the next Arena show. Love the parking lot scene with Taz and the subtle innuendo in Shane's promo re: Storm.

[1998-01-26-AJPW-New Year's Giant Series] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Jun Akiyama
Migs replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
So, I'm not sure I'd ever seen an AJPW 90s main event in full before this. Is this representative of the style? Much of it felt like a product of the worst excesses of 90s wrestling. There was a tombstone on the floor two minutes in and a tiger bomb that got a one count.- 12 replies

Agreed that the Luger/Liz interaction is really weird to watch. Finish looked horribly contrived, and the work before it was really slow.

I find all of my music boards relate to specific bands, so it allows going deep nerd on the nuances of last night's setlist and the like.

What are we looking at in terms of time tables? Anything on what content is coming besides the Monday Night Wars stuff?

The best feud of 1995 is probably Raven-Dreamer, which is excellent. Can't name a single WCW or WWF feud that would come close.

Next paragraph of the piece: "That said, while the WWE Network looks like a separate business model more than that of Simpsons World, there’s nothing to say that the latter won’t run into many of the same issues that ultimately undercut the success of the former. The Simpsons World presentation at TCA impressed even the staunchest of critics, but a pitch-perfect demonstration of a digital platform is a different matter than delivering on the promises made in that demonstration. Moreover, what happens if this platform, with all of its revolutionary potential, doesn’t launch fully formed? What if the “Every. Simpsons. Ever” app launches and you can’t get every Simpsons ever on your smartphone? What happens if you’ve been promised 552 episodes and you only get 250? What does a comprehensive collection look like if it just isn’t comprehensive? It looks like WWE Network."

Yeah, this was good but left me pretty cold after the buildup. It might have needed another 5-10 minutes to push this into more epic territory.

Big surprise - I think Heenan has been pretty excellent on commentary so far, when he was normally pretty tiresome at this stage in his career. The intensity feels legit instead of hackneyed tonight.

This is great, and the intensity Benoit shows is exactly why he never needed to be a good talker in order to get over. When I started digging into the internet wrestling community in 1997, one of the best things was finding that there were a bunch of other people who enjoyed Chris Benoit matches as much as I did. The storyline here is so simple, too, with Benoit going through Raven's lackeys until he finally gets to face Raven. Between this and the Flair-Hart feud, it stands in real contrast to how dull the convoluted nWo stuff feels. It's also why I bought WCW PPVs long after Nitro had started to go downhill - if there was a match you were excited about (that didn't involve the nWo), it generally delivered. The bit with Raven smiling in the crossface is a great bit of character work. I might go above **** on this one - it felt like the right length and right intensity.

Yep, that staggered SNME rollout really upped the excitement. They can't be dumb enough not to do a Raw/Nitro back to back morning block, right? Feels like that would get me back on the train of throwing on the Network in the morning before work.

I definitely enjoyed that Championship Edition, and it would be quite easy to do on the Network. -
[1998-01-18-WWF-Royal Rumble] Shawn Michaels vs The Undertaker (Casket)
Migs replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
This is the problem with Russo booking - why have Kane pretend to be on the Undertaker's side, other than to set up a "swerve"? The only thing I could think of is that by pretending to be on his side, it made it more painful when he cost him the match, sort of an emotional attack. Except that Kane had already cost Undertaker plenty of matches, and had had plenty of opportunities to pretend to be on his side. This is reason #76 that Vince Russo is the worst.- 20 replies

Not much interesting happening here other than the elevation of Rocky, which had begun in earnest with the Austin match the month before. And it's not hard to see why - pretty much everyone else other than Mick was just riff raff.

So weird to see Dustin doing good work after watching the increasingly weird gimmicks and 30 second matches. It's like they dropped WCW '92 into the middle of '98 WWF, and it's strange but also pretty awesome. The nut shot that stopped the Vader Bomb looked snug. Leave it to Vader to dish out his potatoes but also take a nice ball shot. Nice build with Goldust countering the big power moves early but being unable to do so late. Finish looked fantastic as well. "Goldust does to the WWF what Dolly Parton does to a sweater - makes you sit up and take notice." Very topical reference from JR.

[1998-01-10-ECW-House Party] The Sandman vs Sabu (Stairway To Hell)
Migs replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
I'm struggling to think of a Sandman match that's close. He had a couple of good ones with Mikey in the summer of '95. A couple of the Raven and Cactus brawls are okay, but Sabu's athleticism really added a dimension that those matches didn't have. I recall a couple of the late period ECW title matches he was in with Credible and Corino as being good, but those were much less due to The Sandman.- 12 replies

I found this one pretty dull - perhaps due to the way it subverted my expectations for an M-Pro match.

This is a good point - I was honestly a bit surprised initially that this was not the case, although I understand their constraints.

It's kind of stunning to see just how little wrestling was happening on Raw.

[1998-01-10-ECW-House Party] The Sandman vs Sabu (Stairway To Hell)
Migs replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
This was an interesting comparison to Bigelow-RVD, as they cut a pretty impressive pace. This can't even be called a spotfest - there was a logical progression in the violence from their prior matches, and we've established that what these guys really want to do is hurt each other. I like that they used the cane shot as a finish - it always looked devastating and it didn't always get the respect it deserved in terms of selling.- 12 replies

[1998-01-10-ECW-House Party] Rob Van Dam vs Bam Bam Bigelow
Migs replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
Van Dam seems to be developing that meandering, unfocused style that would eventually make his matches in 99-00 pretty much unwatchable. Spot-pose-spot. This wasn't terrible, but I do think the 4/4 match is probably better. I vividly remember Francine's outfit. That was fairly exciting for 14-year-old me.- 8 replies

My fondest memories were probably of Raw Magazine. Because I was 14 in 1997. I read the articles too, I swear...
