  1. This is confusing because we miss the beginning, which is RVD and Sabu v. Douglas and Candido, before it breaks down. More context - the month before, Candido and Storm had a dream partner tag match, with Candido picking Sabu and Storm picking RVD. RVD and Sabu ended up attacking both before the end of it, which is where Candido's issue with them comes from.
  2. The overuse of Buffer by this point was really douchey. His introduction of Page was stunningly bad - "He comes to the ring with no affiliation! He represents his own utter indignity!" I'm sort of sad to see Savage go - his character was such a burst of energy on the shows earlier in the year, even if he unfortunately just could not pay it off in the ring at this point. Why is there a roof on the cage? Had this been used in WCW before? The match itself is fine, and the angle at the end is fine too, but nothing great.
  3. Yeah, the insider-y stuff worked perfectly in the ECW environment ("He's slagging on Vince! Whoo!"), but it's falling flat here. No one remembers Shinobi. People do pop when he does stuff, though, like nailing the King,
  4. I liked the psychology of the finish, though, where X-Pac realizes that if they both get counted out, they're both out of the tournament - so he sends his buddy in to advance. Just a very good little bit of character work.
  5. This was a really sad way for Savage to go out (curious to see the cage match against DDP the next night), but the spot with the headbutt to the chair was brilliant.
  6. Malenko did too much dragging and not enough beating, even if the brawl outside had some cool visuals.
  7. Just watched the ECW 1998 Timeline with New Jack. It was solid, but not groundbreaking. Jack does a good job of talking about the overall vibe of the year, but he wasn't really involved in the top angles, so there's not a lot of discussion of the booking or the big moments on-screen.
  8. Adding to this that I recently saw their followup match at Living Dangerously, and while it's not nearly as good as this one, I thought it was enjoyable.
  9. Just wanted to add that I did find a really solid Candido-Storm match from this same show. Not essential, but very fun, with Storm busting out Candido's top rope power bomb on him.
  10. Certainly the "why?" of the change is completely ignored here. Sting never really explains himself. Of course, there's a really logical point - they have common enemies! Everyone hates Hogan! This would make so much more sense if the Wolfpac didn't also call itself the nWo. Seeing the end of it... Crow Sting is a really weird bit of business. Clearly they landed on a killer angle, but it's not quite clear how committed Sting was at the time (see all the comments Bischoff has made about his prep for Starrcade). But he didn't NEED to be committed, because all he had to do was sit there and occasionally drop in for the angle to work. But it's like no one ever thought out what it would mean when he actually returned and needed to talk and have a character beyond "he sits in the rafters and drops down." And Sting was not the kind of promo guy to be ad libbing a new character, even if he presumably had a year to consider it. So it makes sense that they basically gave up after six months and reverted to his old character (they even gave him color back), and WCW by this point was simply not good at explaining the logic of their angles.
  11. I mean, I can see the potential for him as a foil to Lawler, because of the way Lawler sets himself up. Hales is a classic dweeb, and I can see Lawler playing "cool" against him. My guess is that it will be mostly cringe-worthy, but it might well be over with the crowd, since they seem to eat Lawler up regardless.
  12. I haven't watched a lick of recent NJPW, and I'm going to give the English broadcast a shot. The foreign language commentary has always been a turn off to me with Japanese stuff (I actually prefer the FMW matches with no commentary). But with all the talking up of recent NJPW, feel like I'm missing out a bit and this seems like a nice place to jump in.
  13. I actually liked this style for Sting. Felt much more natural for him.
  14. So, can someone remind me why they weren't main eventing anytime soon with Hogan v. Nash? The whole promotion is built around it.
  15. I guess, what's bugging me here is - why does the Wolfpac still need to be the nWo? Why not make it a splinter group and say, screw it, we're not the nWo, we're something else? That pretty minor step would make this all much less illogical. Regardless, it feels like we're about to drop off a cliff with WCW, and I'm not sure about where we're going with the WWF either. This might get a lot less fun, fast.
  16. This is not a particularly great use of Randy Hales, unless they want him to intentionally be awkward, like Michael Scott as a wrestling promoter.
  17. I liked that this had a very 80s sensibility to go with FMW's quintessentially 90s style. There was a lot to love about this - Kanemura's crazy clothesline sell, the way the weapons recurred (particularly the revenge aspect in Tanaka's use of them towards the end), Fuyuki's zany intensity. I'm absolutely with Childs on Hayabusa being terrible in this. He's just so lackadaisical coming in off the hot tag that it really hurts the momentum of the match. With the right fourth guy, this had potential to really take off, but as it was it was just an excellent tag match and a great showcase for Tanaka.
  18. Bobby saying "Oh hell, just take it" is a great indication of the energy of the angle breaking down.
  19. My friend just purchased us tickets for one of the nights of the tapings in January. Planning to have had a few drinks to handle this.
  20. Decline? As a side note - good for Ambrose for moving that much merch. Of course, it's worth noting that it's probably the least embarrassing merch they have right now, with a real simple design that doesn't broadcast the fact that it's wrestling related.
  21. Added attribution.
  22. Is there something that Vince maybe fundamentally underrates about an "earthy" appeal? Austin was on top for a couple of years but was fairly quickly replaced by the Rock, who certainly had a more Hogan-esque appeal (the Rock was definitely a cartoon). He has resisted moving John Cena out of the top spot (and he has A LOT of similarities to Hogan in act and presentation) in favor of Punk and Bryan, who are a couple of perfect archetypes of the younger generation - I guarantee if you went to college in the last 10 years, you absolutely know people who have those personalities. Is there an argument that Vince has always been trying to recreate Hogan, his first and in some ways biggest success?
  23. Great heels always have a kernel of truth in their points. Jericho is somewhat justifiably pissed, and that's what makes his insane rants so great.
  24. This just drives home the point about how far afield WCW was getting. The announcers are still treating a defection to the nWo as a big deal, but the Wolfpac are basically just a baby face stable. A war within the nWo was a unique angle - a baby face stable against a heel one is less so.
  25. Yeah, I didn't think this was as good as some of the other FMW matches from this year. Little too self-conscious, and the bombs went on so long that I was a bit numb to it by the end.
