  1. UCW only last a couple of years - it was run, mostly out of Queens, by a guy who ran wrestling store, the Wrestling Universe (hence the name). I believe there was some issue with the name, because the promotion became Impact Championship Wrestling. It's continued to run on and off (as recently as this year, I believe), but it never had the cache it did as UCW. In terms of quality, it was pretty good - brought in a lot of good talent, really helped develop some of the NY guys (it was a big launching pad for Red and the SATs, as well as Xavier), and did a decent job of continuing story lines. Certainly in terms of booking a show, it kicked the crap out of its local rival, USA Pro (which put on incredibly long, mind numbing shows).
  2. Ki v. Homicide was generally a fantastic match as well - my mind always goes to USA Pro 1/11/02 at the Elks Lodge since I was there.
  3. I think I liked Konnan in 1998 but I can't remember why.
  4. This set is making me feel like I made a huge mistake in not tracking down some FMW in the late 90s. I think this stuff is great now, but 16 year old Chris would have flipped out for this stuff. This was another excellent match. Loved the counters, particularly Shinzaki's power bomb counter. Loved what an asshole Gannosuke is. Loved the pacing. Just a great time.
  5. So many logic gaps. Why is Nash not defending his buddy while the Disciple attacks? Why didn't he accompany him to the ring? Piper said "no one can run in" but the match is no DQ? Why has Bret turned? He was Sting's friend a week ago. And still, the pop for Nash power bombing Hogan is mega.
  6. Ack, first use of the Bret-killer kick. Great testament to how good Raven was at structuring matches.
  7. Jericho's still on a really great promo run.
  8. If Hogan v. Nash is being built here, why does it take another year for them to have a singles match? Geez. Would love a dissection of the politics on that one. Loved the way this played on 80s Savage - Liz actually interfering, and then Liz actually taking a physical shot, both things that would never have happened then. Terrible chair shot from Liz, though - looked like she nailed him with the legs of it. Wish Savage had gotten a bit more of a chance to celebrate in the moment of triumph.
  9. Classic Raven gaga finish - really enjoyed it.
  10. The Goldberg matches we've gotten to see (I assume we're only seeing the good ones), have been very effective at both getting Goldberg over as a monster, but also using a bit of a unique structure to build drama. This was no exception.
  11. Simple but effective - dug the story of the match and the angle. Not sure how exciting a Dundee-Idol match in 1998 would be, though.
  12. This feud is great, but it really needed to be blown off at Heatwave, and Douglas just couldn't go. Taz was so hot here, and there was just no way to sustain it. Think about this - we're still 8 months from Taz getting his title shot!
  13. Pretty sure the goal here was to add some heat to the Dudleys-Sandman/Dreamer match at the PPV, and some drama as to whether the Sandman would show up. This feud lasted forever and didn't particularly progress anywhere, though.
  14. That was super fun, and Rocco was great here. Liked the steps spot to introduce a modicum of doubt.
  15. How hard would it have been for Bret to come in, claim to be the real world champ, and challenge Sting? Just mind boggling.
  16. JJ Dillon came off as the worst here. "You can't wrestle now! We still make the matches!" "Oh, if he says the power bomb is okay, I guess it's okay?"
  17. Two of the examples used here (One Night Only and Canadian Stampede) are basically the last gasp of jingoism as a legitimate angle - the Harts were playing the national hero angle, and far better than anyone has against Rusev.
  18. Francine would be pretty fantastic for '96, actually. She was involved in the top angle in the back half of the year. Bubba could work if he was already getting involved in office work then. Actually thought he'd be really good for '98, since he was a top guy that year and was very involved with promoting shows then.
  19. Cena shows way more vulnerability on this show. Bray should have brought a wedding ring - Cena would have sold that.
  20. ECW Heat Wave '98 is the best top to bottom ECW PPV, with nary a bad match (although I don't really like Sabu/RVD-Hayabusa/Shinzaki). Backlash 2000 and Judgment Day 2000 are pretty amazing shows, which great main events and strong undercards.
  21. Can we get Orton in a tag team or something so we don't have to watch his dull 20 minute PPV singles matches?
  22. Ambrose-Rollins is a feud that has actually built pretty nicely to a Hell in the Cell match.
  23. Foley was the best at turning on the fans he was in part responsible for creating. It was one of his key skills.
