  1. Will there be an easier transition with acts called up after the Network launch and NXT being made available in more households? Adam Rose does not count as he was essentially hot shotted to the main roster.
  2. NXT does their job to get the wrestler ready for the main stage but letting a wrestler get lost in the directionless midcard is the WWE's fault. While there will always be wrestlers or gimmicks who do not make it on the main stage, creative needs to have some idea where the character is headed and how to book him or her towards their goal.
  3. Work takes me to a hotel where the lions share of my wrestling is viewed, though I have watching a lot at home as of late too. I watch Raw on Hulu, Main Event and NXT when they go up on the network. Smackdown has become completely expendable, most weeks I don't even watch it. I have been trying to watch everything in the 2014 folder on the board which keeps me current on wrestling worldwide........even if I am 5 months behind. When trying to fall asleep in the hotel I put on an old show on the Network. I am trying to watch everything in order, currently on an MSG show in '86. I try to cram wrestling into life.
  4. I love some Negro Casas he is the perfect Rudo. He has a shady look to him and does not hide shady tactics such as kicking a technico in the balls to end the match. I like how a kick to the nuts is enough to end the match, it is realism you will not find in the US. This match comes across as a standard TV match, which I hope doesn't show my ignorance of the Lucha Libre. I can appreciate a match like this but nothing to go out of your way to find.
  5. I like finding these small indie gems on the YouTubes. What we have here are two pro wrestlers having a mat based pro wrestling match. There are no crazy high flying moves, and not a reliance on stiff strikes to entertain the crowd. Dutra and Thatcher go out in front of a tiny crowd and wrestle. Maybe I don't watch enough of the indie scene but I found this match to be a bit of fresh air, harkening back to the days of Lou Thez title defenses. This match is certainly not perfect with my main complaint being the lack of cohesive story and the out of nowhere finish. Still I can appreciate two men on the mat for 20 minutes and hope to see more from both men in the future.
  6. The more I watch Lucha, the more I fall in love with it. The way wrestling is presented in Mexico is a thing of beauty. This match was fun even if it wasn't a technically great match. CMLL does not hide injuries like the WWE tries to do. They showed Ultimo Dragoncito's presumed concussion several times. Poor guy tries a monkey flip and gets two boots right to the top of the head for his trouble. Eletrico is forced to wrestle the second half of the match on his own and does a good enough job but with the injury they are just trying to salvage something from the match. Demus316 has quickly become my favorite mini and he scores the win for his team with a J Driller.
  7. This was during the Roman is going to break away from The Shield by April phase of WWE booking. CM Punk beat the other two members and now it is Reigns turn to show them how he is heads and shoulders above his fellow Shield members. Punk and Reigns try for an epic match with the slow transition between moves (especially in the final stretch). Punk throws everything at Reigns and cannot put him down but some interference from the Shield give Reigns the opprotunity to hit the spear for the win. Punk did what he could to help the elevation of Reigns putting him over strong in a good match on a big RAW. ***1/2
  8. Raw went through a WCW-esque early 90's period where there was a great match or two every week. The Rock N Roll express essentially milked the same formula into the mid 90's with great success and The Rhodes Brothers could have done the same thing if they were allowed to stay as a team. They both know how to work each side of the face in peril/firey babyface formula which adds a little variety to their matches. The Real Americans and most notebly Ceasaro are on their way up and are more than game to have good matches. This match did lack that little special something that makes the later Ceasaro/Cena, Harper/Cena, Shield/Wyatt matches had. There is no sense of epicness that sends the match past the 4 star threshold, but it is a very solid ***1/4 match.
  9. There isn't a whole lot for me to say about this match, because if you do not like two men beating the hell out of each other then you are dead to me. These two put it all on the line and had a great pro wrestling match. I have been building my 2014 MTOY list by watching matches in order and this is a firm second place to start the year. ****1/4
  10. As I mentioned in an earlier post in the January '14 matches that I know little about Lucha but am certainly willing to learn. This is the first Pegueno Reyes del Aire I have had the pleasure of viewing and come to find out it is a Ciebernetico match with all minis for a trophy. There is a Reyes del Aire at some point in the year with regular wrestlers (forgive me if that is the wrong way to phrase that). These minis are fantastic pro wrestlers and they were flying around all over the place working in some nice submission maneuvers which served mostly as the eliminations. I made my pick about 5 minutes in after getting a feel for all the combatants. First pick was Shockercito since he was the smallest man and my backup pick was Demus 316. Shockercito was eliminated about halfway through and Demus at least made it to the final four. There is a sick looking knee injury in the 28th minute of the file and it is the ending to the match. I may not be able to rate this from a technical standpoint but I know persicion, accuracy and entertainment. This match was a good time but I didn't lose my shit over it. Still it is worth a look. ***1/2
  11. This was just okay. Sure there were some spots I liked such as the heels pulling their opponent off the apron just as the faces were going to make the tag and the double switch ending was fine. It feels like every Los Matadores match I have ever seen which is fine but certainly not MOTYC level.
  12. The match starts about 2:27 or 2:37 into the card and is well worth your time. I enjoy aspects of modern wrestling that some smart fans get a little snobbish on, such as spotfests or certain indie matches. The chain wrestling that fills the first half of the match is in the better than average tier of indie chain wrestling. Hero's focus on the hand is nice, but Rowe not using it for a few minutes after the work is especially nice. Rowe also sold a knockout forearm going completely limp. These two give a nice pace to the match starting slow and working to bigger and bigger spots until the big finish that popped the crowd. Hometown favorite Rowe took the match with his Death Rowe finisher and added himself to the list of wrestlers I would like to see more of. His aformentioned selling was very very good and it is no wonder ROH gave him a shot. ****
  13. This barely made the list only, making it because the ending stretch is so great. I was sorely disappointed with the BJW offense and wish they would have just tried to kick the crap out of TMDK (The Mighty Don't Kneel) from the outset since that is strength of any wrestler from Big Japan. It certainly shows in this match as when they shift into asskicker mode the match becomes awesome. It helps I am a sucker for crazy TMDK double teams of which the ending had plenty. ***
  14. I come into this match biased because these two are my favorite wrestlers in NJPW and they bring in one of my favorite stories in wrestling in the pro wrestler vs striker. Tanahashi controls with some nice leg work but almost loses the match when it becomes a strikefest about midway through. Tanahashi had a vicious dragon screw where his opponent is laying on the mat yet Tanahashi still goes under the leg. Also he busts out a Styles Clash while holding the legs in a Texas Cloverleaf position. Tanahashi wins the match with the High Fly Flow thus ending the 168 day reign of Nakamura. ****1/4
  15. I wasn't as big a fan of this as some were. The match is technically good but there is something missing that I cannot put my finger on. The end sequence was quite good but the middle really sagged. ***1/2
  16. Hey guys, my name is Alex. I'm 31, from South Carolina and like many others have lurked here for a little while between this and an old account I no longer use. I discovered the board after getting the '96 set. Loss's gigantic 883 favorite matches thread combined with trying to build a complete 2014 MOTY list led to me getting back into the board. I need to get into more discussions than just reviewing matches but I am very critical of my writing. Though I am not as well written as Loss or MattD but I can take my place as a firey redneck poster. I got into wrestling in 1989 with WWF Superstars episodes that came on after the Muppet Babies. My first memories involved falling in love with The Rockers and Ultimate Warrior. After renting WM5 from the video store I was completely hooked and had to watch every tape any video store had. I smartened up to the business by reading Scott Keith's Rants (sigh) and around 2006 I discovered the DVDVR message board (Brisco). It was there where I started expanding my wrestling horizons of what good wrestling was. A Flair/Steamboat technical clinic is not the only measuring stick for great wrestling, two fat men punching each other in the face can be considered great pro wrestling as well. I am looking forward to being more active here and learning more about the pro wres.
  17. I feel torn like an old shoe about this match. First the pacing is kind of weird but the final stretch has some good moments. The Bullet Club interference I get but it really takes away from the match and the match is better when they are sent away. There are some great near falls in the final stretch however the entire match lacks a cohesive story or limb work to make me love the match. The win is Ibushi's big moment though I wish it had been a better match.
  18. I loved this match the first time I watched it back in January and probably overrated it a bit. Shibata and Goto absolutely lay in some shots to one another. One aspect that drags the match down for me is that we get amazing sequences then they have to rest giving the match an up and down flow. Don't get me wrong it doesn't drag the match down much as this is a must see great match of 2014 but not the 5-star classic I was praising at the beginning of the year. Watch this! ****1/4
  19. These two wrestlers put on a nice wrestling match where they go hold for hold to a time limit draw. I really enjoyed Kyle Matthews applying every hold he could think of in the last minute trying to find something to make Conley submit. I feel this is a shade below making my list as the match is real slow developing. There is a way to fill 15 minutes and make it feel like 5 but this felt like 20.
  20. Well that is 20 minutes of my life I will never get back. This was perfectly fine indy wrestling giving Pauly a rub by taking a national star to a time limit draw and setting up a presumed tag match at the next show. The chicks filming the match completely ruin the entire experience. The things I put myself through to watch pro wrestling.
  21. We get a methodical southern brawl that is a little too methodical for its own good. It started out with Alexander a house of fire but he cooled down rather quickly into a slow paced match where the hatred was less evident. The live crowd was completely into the match and took the spectacle in as a big deal. Tempers told a good story of his ability to get out of a bad situation by cheating. Alexander had him as good as beat but Tempers took off the collar outside and the ref noticed before counting the three. I need to get down to Cornilia, GA to see Tempers at Anarchy, where he is a mainstay. Tempers carried this match with his bleeding, shouting and of course cheating. Good little indy match.
  22. This was a good main event that continued the story of the tension between The Shield, especially between Ambrose and Reigns. The Shield was able to control the lions share of the match with their combination of technical ability and craftiness before the aforementioned problems cost them the match. This match lacked the dramatic flair of matches to come and in some ways felt like a more pedestrian Smackdown main event than a match that will be remembered for years to come.
  23. This is where I get confused on Lucha. I see a simple trios match that I assume is two out of three falls however there is a fall late in the match (the German suplex) that seemingly does not count. This may have been a captains fall match of which I will have to google the rules. Nevertheless it is a fun match that will not make my 2014 list. I never picked up on a story that ties the whole match together and the lack of an ending really hurt things. I assume this is a stop in the larger story of Fuego and Zavala with Fuego's mask being taken at the end. The rudos were very good and Virus scored major points with me for kicking the middle rope on a springboard move sending Fuego crashing to his doom. Fuego impressed me with his good babyface fire and dancing while coming up from a bridge. Like I said earlier even though this will not make the MOTYC list (*** and up) it was enjoyable and a good example of Lucha being fun. Why have I skipped out on Lucha for the past 10 years I will never know.
  24. I have been working on gaining a better feel for the Lucha product. I know the people who love Lucha are extremely passionate about it. Negro Casas and Titan put on a good match but not an all time classic. I admit I was struggling with the first two falls but they pull everything back together well in the third. The limb work, albeit short, was a good mix of holds and strikes. The hold Titan wins the first fall with is quite amazing and is one reason for Negro's knee issues later on. Sadly the varied limb work does not factor into the finish and it holds the match back from where it could have gone. ***
