  1. I loved how Aja controlled most of the match through cheapshots and brawling. Also, surprised at how little offense that Chihiro got in the whole match but what she did manage to get off were bombs and Aja did a wonderful job selling it. Aja running out of gas towards the end and going after Chihiro's leg in a desperate last attempt to stop her momentum was really nice. Personally preferred the January match because I thought the work there was much smoother but this one still did a good job a continuing the goal of turning Chihiro into a big star this early into her career. ***3/4
  2. I was pretty hyped for this when it was first announced since these two had an awesome match at the first Fortune Dream show back in 2014. Hiroyo counters Meiko's early technical approach with power so Meiko just decides to start kicking the crap out of her to take control. I felt that they did a good job of keeping the back and forth going throughout the match. The finish came off as a bit out of nowhere as the two had been working a slugfest but didn't really have many nearfalls up to that point. While this was pretty good, it was still kind of disappointing due to having seen them do much better before. ***3/4
  3. WAVE announced the lineup for this year's Catch the WAVE tournament. It's pretty underwhelming when you consider the lineup from the last two years although the final could be pretty good since it looks like it will be Sareee vs. either Misaki Ohata or Rina Yamashita. Also, the main event of the opening night of the tournament is Takumi Iroha (in a rare appearance on tape) vs. Ryo Mizunami. The last time Iroha had a big title match was vs. Kairi Hojo for the World of Stardom title back in 2015 and that match was really great. WAVE Network also uploaded every match from the last two tournaments. I really want to watch last years finals because the matchups for them look fantastic.
  4. This was the opener of the Joshi Pro show that WAVE put on to feature younger wrestlers with all of the matches having 10 minute time limits. The match is pretty much what you would expect from these two at this point. It's super physical with a lot of power spots. That works out well as they manage to have the crowd fairly hot for the end of the time limit. Certainly hopeful that there will be a more meaningful rematch in the near future. ***3/4
  5. This is for Storm's SWA title and is Kyona's forth title match this year. I really enjoyed the opening with Storm trying to use her British style matwork but Kyona countering it with her strength so Toni has to get inventive in order to counter back. Very good back and forth at the finish with Storm busting out some nice new offense. Another standout title match performance from Kyona and one of the better performances from Storm. ***3/4
  6. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNVX-InSWEM This is a rematch from the November show as it seems that they are trying to build a rivalry between these two. I really enjoyed Hana's work here. It seems that ever since she came back from her wrist injury that she has been able to incorporate more of her personality into her work. While Chihiro Hashimoto gets a lot of hype, I think Shirahime is just as good if not slightly better in some areas. She does a terrific job of selling the drama of the match as she slowly builds her comeback. Very enjoyable match between two young stars. ***1/2
  7. Finished watching the 3/21 WAVE/Joshi Pro show. Even with all of the matches having a ten minute time limit the show still produce some really good bouts and also had some faces that don't usually make tape like Takumi Iroha. Overall, March was a damn good month for joshi. After checking my spreadsheet, almost half of the matches on it are from March and that is still with the Ice Ribbon, OZ Academy, and two Stardom shows to watch. Kagetsu announced that she will be leaving wrestling for the time being after April 23. Personally, I've found her work this year to be disappointing. Hopefully this will give her an opportunity to refocus and improve some things for the future.
  8. Listening to the Emiko Kado story is pretty chilling after what happened with Shibata this week.
  9. This is for Mizunami's Regina Di WAVE title. To be honest, I avoided watching this match because I think that Haruhi is one of the worst workers in joshi, but got curious because I saw a couple of other people recommend it. To her credit, Haruhi works her butt of here and the crowd gets behind her as a result. The story of this match is more of a traditional Japanese wrestling storyline as it's Mizunami challenging the toughness of Haruhi. Mizunami does such a great job in her selling and pacing in the match that her being off on either one of those things would have greatly effected the quality of the match. Easily the most surprisingly great matches of the year so far and a credit to how great of a wrestler that Mizunami has become. ****
  10. This is a competitive squash but it's a damn fun one. SAKI works for LLPW-X which doesn't even get its results reported so she is a real unknown. She looks good in the offense that she does get in but never really pushes Ohata to the point to where she might get the win. Ohata is great here, as while she doesn't have the flashiest offense she definitely knows how to use it effectively. ***1/2
  11. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhqD2iTZs9w This popped up in my YouTube suggestions and I thought some people here would want to see it. Someone did English subtitles for the video package that Samurai did for the last Shirai sister tag match back in 2015. It pretty much explains the relationship between the two of them from Io's perspective at least, Mio wasn't interviewed.
  12. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHZI7OYklb8 Neat visual during the entrance of Matsumoto and Mizunami where they each have a single and tag title belts, but each one is from a different promotion. This is similar to the Io Shirai anniversary match from a few days earlier in that it feels like a bunch of main-eventers pairing of to have a match. While this match didn't reach the high points of that match, this one was much more physical. The strike exchanges between Arisa and Hiroyo were particularly nasty. More or less what you would expect from these four. ****
  13. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pglPdQ7_H2o This one almost snuck by me as I didn't know that it had happened until I read the results of the show. The match itself is what you would hope it would be, a contrast between the technical striking/submissions of Syuri versus the straight forward bulldozer style of Yamashita. The whole story of the match is Syuri trying to avoid and counter Yamashita's power. This is a damn good match that you don't want to skip out on if you don't watch the undercards of joshi shows. ****
  14. So after looking at the results of this show, these matches could be just as good as I thought. All of them got a fair amount of time, more than 15 minutes. As an added bonus, Best Friends reunited after their singles' match and challenged Nanae Takahashi and a partner of her choosing for the 4/24 show.
  15. This is for Io's World of Stardom title as Hojo was the last woman to pin Io in a singles match back in the 5*GP last year. It's also almost exactly two years to the day that Hojo beat Io for the then vacant title that started her rise in Stardom. I really like the opening sequences in the match as they established the Io was seemingly always a step ahead of Hojo. They also play off of their last match a fair bit as they tease the ganso bomb type move off of the apron a few times and Hojo takes control of the match by working over Io's back. I was surprised that the finish wasn't nearly as elaborate as you would expect between these two it came off as simple compared other big joshi title matches. Still this is a great match and most likely the end of their rivalry in Stardom at least, with Hojo stating that she wants it to go to the "next level." ****
  16. Io/Hojo from the 3/20 Stardom show is great. I would recommend watching their last match from 9/3/16 before watching it since they play off of that match quite a bit. The post-match is interesting as Hojo says that she wants them to fight at "the next level" then Io quickly changes the subject.
  17. In a promo before the match, Storm says that Hiroyo is a dream opponent for her. They don't try to do anything epic here, but they still go out an have a really fun match. The whole match is back and forth between the two of them, neither one of them is in control for too long. In fact, they must have lost track of the time because they don't really build to a finish as the time limit just ends which felt different if unintended. A very fun match. ***1/2
  18. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OE4zCJuQ3Q This is a rematch of their super underrated match from exactly one year earlier. The main difference between this match and that one is that this match is more about strikes and suplexes than matwork. Honestly, Syuri probably took nastier shots here than she has in any of her MMA fights so far. Even thought the match is short they both put over how hard hitting it was with their selling. Strong match that should be a big win for Syuri. ****
  19. She's a freelancer so groups a hesitant to push her. Her current OZ Academy reign is the first major title run that she has had in her career. I agree that she has everything that you need to be a headliner. If she had come along in the mid 80's or mid 90's she would probably be a bigger star than she is now. It's really a shame since I think that she's a top 10 joshi worker right now.
  20. This felt like one of those random mid-90's AJW Korakuen Hall main events with the abnormal teams. Wow, these four just went straight at each other by just being nasty stiff the whole way. Meiko especially was laying into Mayu in such a way that you think that she owed her money. I was very impressed with Chihiro here as this felt like she was really out there to try and show up her veteran opponents which is something that you usually don't see from her. She would really try to thrash Io whenever they would try to go to the mat. The others are pretty much what you expect in a big match. The best joshi match so far this year. ****1/2
  21. If you have Stardom World, make sure to check out the main events from the last two shows (3/5 & 3/9.) Both of those matches are really great with the latter, Io Shirai's tenth anniversary match with her teaming with Meiko Satomura vs. Mayu Iwatani and Chihiro Hashimoto, being the first legit joshi MOTYC of 2017. Toni Storm vs. Hiroyo Matsumoto from the 3/9 show is pretty good too.
  22. This is for BY Ho's Goddesses of Stardom tag titles as they are challenged by rising star Kyona and veteran freelancer Matsumoto. Like both of her other two title matches from earlier this year, the match is built around making Jungle Kyona look like a major player in the promotion. Again, while there are times where her work isn't smooth and her inexperience shows, she still manages to look like she can hold her own. Hiroyo looked great here too. It shows you how she's a super underrated tag worker she is when she already has two great tag title matches this year with completely different women in both matches. The finish is well done as the match is held in Kyona's hometown so the crowd really gets behind her during the nearfalls and the eventual win. ****1/4
  23. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcT7KCLKXAU This is Nakamori's first defense of the JWP title that she won at the end of last year. They did a terrific job laying this match out with a veteran like Leon posing enough of a threat to the new champ but not being a clear favourite. It made you actually buy into how close and competitive the match was. The finish is long but that due in a way to the both of them selling the big moves that each of them were hitting on each other. The only thing that keeps this from being a great match is the work isn't as smooth as it should have been. Still, this is a strong, well earned, first defense for Nakamori. ***3/4
  24. I understand why they would want to get their side out, I just don't get the timing. Why not wait until after the show on the 20th to let them try to draw as well as they can with the biggest match up that they currently have. This news getting out now is more likely to cause them to lose Stardom World subscriptions quicker to. Anyway, Sendai Girls is getting interesting. Syuri beat Meiko Satomura in a rematch of their super underrated match from last year. This is also the third big singles job that Meiko has done in the last six months. Also, they also announced Aja Kong/Chihiro Hashimoto rematch for their April Korakeun show. Ice Ribbon is running a pretty loaded show on the 26th with this lineup on top: * Tsukasa Fujimoto vs. Arisa Nakajima * International Ribbon Tag Team Championship : Avid Rival (Misaki Ohata, Ryo Mizunami)© vs. Over Sun (Yumi Ohka, Yuki Miyazaki) vs. Tsukushi, Hiragi Kurumi * ICEx∞ Championship : Risa Sera © vs. Rina Yamashita All three of those matches have the potential of being very good if not great.
