    Samoa Joe

He had a tag title run with Magnus, then challenged Aries at Slammiversary, then a good match with Angle at Destination X. Meanwhile, on Impact he was having good matches in the Bound for Glory tournament, and then feuded with Magnus to close out the year.

Joe (and a lot of the rest of the TNA roster) had a bit of a resurgence in 2012 that might be worthy of a closer look if you want another plus on his career....
  3. Was there anything worthwhile in Jannetty's 1995-96 WWF run? (Actually, I'm not even sure he left in 96, but when that one finished up....)

    GWE Podcasts

Good show guys. Set out the challenges of putting this together quite nicely. We've a lot of work to do.....
  5. Great show. That story about Monsoon's complaints about not hooking a leg at a time when wrestlers were only permitted to hook it on the pinfall is typical of his know-it-all approach on commentary. And his refusal to acknowledge he was wrong about Superstar Graham's death is hilariously pompous. One thing that backfired on him though was his insistence on extra referees for tag matches. He bleated on and on about this for years, and the fact that nothing came of it made him sound very very unimportant indeed.....

Also, Loss, I'm really enjoying your run through the title reigns. The 80s sets really brought home to me just how vital Flair was all over the place and it's nice to see some of it put into a nice clear bundle here.

No need to be so rude. Just because you don't like the comparison doesn't negate the fact that it's a perfectly valid one. Of course there are inherent differences between acting and wrestling, but Brando's name was brought up elsewhere in this thread and there are definitely similarities worth discussing. One of the major points of argument is whether Flair's later work should be held against him. Looking to a similar situation in another industry is perfectly reasonable. As for your argument that Flair has lots and lots of matches compared to the amount of movies Brando has made, well, so does Koko B. Ware. What's your point? The point is that Brando's GOAT case is made on a handful of iconic performances and Flair's is based on consistent great performances "week in, week out". It isn't a valid comparison because it's off. If you MUST make the analogy between Flair and an actor, at least pick one who is comparable. Brando isn't the right one. You need an actor who was having Oscar nominations year on year and who had a lot of great performances in a lot of films. Someone like Dustin Hoffman from The Graduate in 1967 to Rain Man in 1988 and everything he did in between. A Flair - Dustin Hoffman comparison works better for your purposes all round, even down to the late career. The Brando one doesn't work period. If you MUST make the analogy between Brando and a wrestler, you need a wrestler who was seen as being incredibly naturally talented who has 3-4 matches considered the among the best of all-time, but who for the rest of the time was in a lot of mediocre or nothing matches. Ricky Steamboat? I dunno. I like the Steamboat comparison because, like Brando, a lot of people casually refer to Steamboat as the GOAT (or at least they used to) and people bee-line to the iconic performances. Beach Blast 92 with Rude is your Last Tango, the Flair match at Spring Stampede 94 Apocalypse Now. Let's stop this idiocy now. And, sorry, didn't mean to come across as being rude. I'm just pissed off that so much of this thread has been about total crap. It's not fair to Flair. Parv, we've got two years to sort this. Chill.
  8. Hear, hear. I love the site too guys but it's intimidating as hell to go against some of the sacred cows around here.
  9. Now that's one with potential. Has Teddy done any shoots previously? He has a long and interesting career to cover if not. Just hope they take their time with his NWA/WCW run and don't rush to WWE as is their habit.
  10. One thing I would have liked to hear more on was the feeling that the magazine had grown out of touch and negative toward US wrestling in general since the turn of the century. I wondered if any of the panel felt Findlay sounded like a bitter old man recently...
  11. That IS pretty aggressive, Joe.....
  12. He talks about having several VCRs recording 24 hours a day and getting up in the middle of the night to switch over tapes, so he certainly was busy....
  13. How did Austin get left out in the cold for the last week?!! Top 10 for me, despite my reservations about 1998-99.
  14. Man, I had a cereal case (the ones that grocery stores get 16-20 boxes of cereal in) full of VHS wrestling I did that with. I believe there were several tapes with Best of Waltman on them too. Not that I have a working VCR anymore, but I always regret throwing that box away. Wrestling's like poor old decent Michael Corleone in Godfather Part 3 - it always pulls you back IN!
  15. My dad's 68 Johnny. He doesn't think he's old either.
  16. Not to start an argument, but has anyone watched the 1992 Rumble lately? I saw it last year - lots of good stuff but it drags badly at times in the second half. As far as favourite ppvs, I really liked No mercy 2008 on a recent rewatch.

I'm not Matt, but I understand why you're asking. A lot of threads here list the peak years/feuds/matches of the specific wrestlers career. I'm using that as a jumping off point and nothing else. On a different note (and I don't think this contradicts the above), what's the general feeling on Flair's 70s stuff? Really haven't gotten into it a great deal, nor heard much discussion of it so far.
  18. That's good of you..... It's a positive for me in a lot of cases.
  19. Apparently a fan jumped the rail last night, but his intention seems to have been to high-five Cena rather than inflict bodily harm. More seriously, Loss, don't you think those moments highlighted from the past few years touch that kind of heat? Now granted, that's several instances over 2-3 years and you listed 4 from 97 alone, but I think today's fans can still get nicely riled up when their buttons are pushed correctly.
  20. The word polished comes to mind. So do the words top 3 on my ballot.
  21. The Shield vs The Wyatts? Daniel Bryan's face turn in the cage and Mania triumph? Money in the Bank '11 and Lesnar v Punk at SummerSlam last year.

    Sami Zayn

'I saw him live for the first time in 2007 in a small little GAA hall in Ireland' What?! Where?!! Don't get that much in Armagh and Down clubs....
  23. The 'self-conscious epics' of his second run will be a point of division here. Personally, I've no problem with them - they're great big spectacular matches. I'd say he's a top 20 for me presently. Loved almost all of his work from 2007-10, and there's plenty to savour in 2002-06.
  24. Read a few Suckerpunch. It wasn't kayfabed, Rob should be proud of his writing there too.
  25. Doesn't the Flair match go an hour?
