Titans of Wrestling #33: Unspecial Too
BigBadMick replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Re: the legends Battle Royal. Wasn't that the match that Angelo Poffo was excluded from, which led to Randy harbouring longstanding anger towards WWF? Definitely heard someone saying that somewhere along the way.- 12 replies

Agree on point 3 there, Parv - on everything in life. Nothing's given time to settle. -
Well why didn't he just say that then?!
-
But then, nothing he said makes any sense.........
-
One other thing about Tony - was anyone else thinking 'Hi Tony, instead of defending Heenan's right to trash you, pick up the f***ing phone and call him!'?

This isn't a good shoot. Brodus is very much a WWE apologist, and gets increasingly frustrated with the questions asked (exactly the type of questions he should have expected on a KC Youshoot, by the way). He doesn't like the idea that anyone is 'buried' if they're on tv every week, he argues that because there's so much content it's only natural that some of it will suck, and his only comments on heat backstage concern some lightweight squabbles with Hornswoggle. I'd imagine that WWE brass would have absolutely no problem with anything he says here. Having said all that, he's quite a funny witty guy, and likable too. This is just the wrong forum for him.

During the WCW Tag Title match at Spring Stampede 99, Tony seemed to get nostalgic for southern style tag wrestling and was happy to see it's application with Benoit/Malenko v Raven/Saturn. Also, he spoke very fondly of Windham's early days and rapid progression as a worker during either the SuperBrawl or Uncensored 99 tag match. These two quieter, less hyperbolic moments from Tony in 1999 suggested to me a love of old school Crockett wrestling and a hint of dismay at the product he was trying to push at the time.

PTB SummerSlam Rewind Series - 1989
BigBadMick replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Another good one, lads. I watched this event in the early hours of Christmas morning, 1991. Still holds a special place in memories. Liked getting the WONs in there. Always thought the three strong matches carried it, and there was plenty of enjoyment in the main event too. And the crowd was insane! -
Well Chad, you've got a family to support now, just like Mick. Perhaps you'll agree with him again - you'll be chasing the big bucks too ;-)
-
Can't say he hasn't been guilty of all that. The money thing is negated to me - somewhat - by his charity work. Also, as far as the thin skin goes, I get the impression he flies off the handle then thinks things through and comes out the other side with a more reasonable, thoughtful reaction. He's very good at stating both sides of any argument he's had with WWE over the years and sounding rational overall, in my opinion. That's mostly from podcasts and even the 2004 RF shoot.

I think it was more of an effort to represent as many starrcades as possible on the set. But three Road Warriors matches is tough going. Oh, Steamboat v Blanchard is missing too.
-
'Don't try to market yourself as different and the man of the people when you have the same tendencies as most other people in the industry.' How do you mean? Just asking, I'm curious and don't know what you're getting at.
-
Wow Chad, I'm detecting that you're not a Foley guy - at all. Should make for interesting listening for the next few years....
-
The rankings on that Starrcade set are all over the place. Where oh where is Flair v Garvin?! And Bigelow v Windham probably deserves a spot too.
-
I agree, Loss. And, even if WWE accept that it's a downtime, they could at least use it to build up a few guys. God, I get fed up thinking the same thing about WWE, year after year, after year.......
-
I'm still wondering if it's a deliberate cooling off by WWE though?
-
It's slightly different because so much was up in the air for most of the year but Smackdown in autumn 2002 is an exception.
-
He came across fine on the OMG WCW Moments dvd too. I'd heard that he distanced himself from wrestling for a long time, good to hear he's able to talk fondly again.

This has come up a bit lately. The consensus view is that, in the past few years, WWE heats up from January-April, then cools off a bit, then heats up again for SummerSlam, and seems to cool off until Rumble again. I've seen people talking about easing off WWE until January now. When did this begin? I've never really noticed a string of poor ppvs in a season until last autumn, and don't think it was deliberate by the company. Is it partly to do with part-timers coming back to create massive WMs for the last 5 years or so? Is it Brock's 3-4 dates per year? Has the network something to do with it now? Or is it the generally poor booking and inability to have a slew of potential main eventers lined up at any given time? I think this is a really interesting topic and hope to hear views on it, thanks.

Just getting to this. Cheers for answering my Flair-WWF 91 question Parv - thought you were ducking it!

Place to Be Podcast Episode 329: WrestleMania XIX

Great review. I love the 5 big main events in a row feel to this, that's what puts it over WM 17 for me. Thought you were a bit harder on HHH/Booker than me. It's certainly the worst of those 5 matches, but Booker does a good job keeping it moving, and gives HHH one of his best matches of 2003 (faint praise, I know). -

Great, been looking forward to this. Best 'Mania ever, I think. -
Not on Austin's show but since it was his opinion I thought I'd comment here. He was on Keller's show last week. Keller brought up WWE wrestlers being unhappy with the uncertainty of PPV pay even now, in September. Austin talked around it a bit, coming off as a WWE apologist (something I'd never have accused him of before) and basically suggested that if the guys need to take a cut now to cover set up costs on new technology, so be it. He also mentioned wrestlers covering bodybuilder salaries for the WBF in the early 90s without coming down negatively on it. Found this flabbergasting considering the number of blow ups he had with management on lesser issues over the years.

I've made this point before, but if nobody is willing to reprimand Cena for excessive and loud spot calling, shouldn't the production team take it upon themselves to shoot his matches differently (less close-ups)?
