  2. Ironically, whenever I think of Harley two things immediately spring to mind: 1) the purple "King" get-up from his WWF run; 2) his ridiculous teeter-totter spot, neither of which make me think "serious". Beyond that though, yeah, he comes across as one of those legit badass dudes who would fuck you up for asking him too many questions about his tattoo.
  3. That might be the most brilliant explanation for Angle that I've ever read. Tip 'o the cap to you, sir.
  4. Use the edit feature, bro.
  5. My Angle criticisms are mostly about the very end of his WWE run and pretty much the entirety of his TNA run. I'm definitely not a "WWE hater" considering I have Cena just outside my top 10, Hogan in my top 25 and only just missed being the high vote on Matt Hardy by 2 spots. Just because I loved the first 3 years of Angle's career doesn't mean I am going to forget everything that came afterward when the only idea he seemed to have for making an "epic" match was to have a bunch of finishers & counters of finishers. I don't have an issue with the criticisms. Everybody has a take and that's legit. That's why this board exists. I just grew tired of the constant bashing throughout the reveal thread. I know people were just having fun with it, but it's tiresome when you're somebody who enjoys the guy's work (flaws and all) and every other post is "FUCK THAT GUY!". It takes the fun out of celebrating how well other guys did. Whatever. Now it'll move on to Michaels. Life goes on, lads.
  6. If your friend is going to wax poetic about the "greatness" of Kurt Angle then tell him no. I'm at least glad Angle didn't make the top 50. So it looks like the answer is "no, it's not safe". Got it. Back to my WWE-loving hole in the ground.
  7. Angle finaly dropped. Is it safe to come back to the thread now? Asking for a friend.
  8. You are not the only one who loves Jackie Brown. I wish Tarantino would take another crack at making another move like Jackie Brown -- something that has subtle character development and actual human emotion instead of simply creating his own "Tarantino Universe" filled w/ larger-than-life personalities every new film. Co-sign. Jackie Brown is my favorite of his films. Probably the best pure acting on display of anything Tarantino has put out.
  9. Do yourself a favor and watch the DVD of Citizen Kane with the Roger Ebert commentary. It'll increase your appreciation of the film tenfold. And I was racking my brain trying to find a wrestling comp for PSH and Eddie might be the best one. Nice pull.
  10. I'll take Philip Seymour Hoffman's career over anyone's. Never seen a performance from him I didn't like, even if the movies didn't always deliver. Took chances and constantly mixed it up, Could tackle any type of role in any type of film and make it work. Totally delivered as a lead when asked. Shined in supporting roles without upstaging the film. Was great at all the small things. A guy who could slide right into a big budget action film like Twister, or a wacky ensemble comedy like the Big Lebowski, then turn around and do serious, nuanced work in any number of low scale indy projects. Tragic that we lost him when we did because he had so many great performances left to give.

    Chris Jericho

Yeah, your description of him on your GWE podcast as the ultimate WWE utility guy really struck a chord with me. Not only is he good-not-great at pretty much everything, but his approach to the business seemed ideally suited for WWE's style.

    Chris Jericho

Jericho is such a weird beast to me. I remember getting way into him during early '98 when he was at his Jerichoholic peak, because he was such a tremendous character that stood out on WCW TV. Plus he was having decent matches with the cruiserweights. I marked huge when he headed to the WWF because it was clear which way the war was headed by that point and I wanted him to be on the winning side. I also thought they'd "get" his character better and position him well. Which they ulitmately did. But his first WWE run, while having plenty of high points, was oddly empty to me when it ended. I remember at the time thinking, "I really love following this guy, but his matches keep coming up short." He'd put together brief runs (the Benoit feud, the series with the Rock), but I ultimately came to the realization that he was never really a great worker to begin with, but had got that reputation (at least in mhy head) by nature of the names he was associated with and the fact that he was such a charismatic performer. His '07-'10 run was very different in terms of character and was probably the only time he felt like a main eventer, but again he didn't come back as any ring genius. I just think that stretch is where he got much more creative in his ring work in terms of storytelling. He felt different even though he was essentially still using the same moveset. Everything from the 2012 return onward has been a series of interesting ideas that either didn't quite pan out like he planned (near as I can tell) or has been done for a quick surprise/nostalgia pop. He just doesn't seem to quite fit in the modern WWE world to me, even though... there he is. He's had a long and successful career. He overcame size limitations to be a guy that company seemed to have a lot of faith in and was willing to put in big spots. He's had his share of great matches, but he'll probably always be more known for his characterizations and mic work than his ring work. In some ways, he's the ultimate WWE guy. All of which makes him really difficult to evaluate, because his career is clearly way more sports entertainment than wrestling, but it didn't completely sidestep the wrestling part the way say, Hogan or The Rock did. I think he genuinely aspires to be great in the ring (indeed to be great all around), but just never quite got there, whereas the other two knew where their bread was buttered and stuck to it.
  13. The E&C show has really found it's groove as the ultimate smark show. The "WrestlersOnly.com" dating service bit, the "Hot Tag" ad where Christian blind tagged in to bang the dude's wife, the AJ Styles fan segment where they're dragging him off and Edge (I think) says, "have him back by Monday, he's gotta put Heath Slater over!" were all gold. I think its genius can be summed up in the exchange between E&C and Mean Gene this past week: "Gene: Does Vince watch this show? Edge: FUCK NO!". Good times.
  14. This right here is why I wanted to set fire to my ballot and run screaming into the night. I couldn't for the life of me separate those two elements when trying to determine what I thought "greatness" meant and it killed any hope I had of my rankings making sense.

    NXT talk

So I'm heading to the NXT show tonight here in the Boston area. I was looking forward to a good old fashioned house show with a couple of decent matches and maybe some totally unknown faces from developmental. You know, nothing to get worked up over but a fun night of rasslin'. Then during the Joe-Crews match they mentioned specifically that Joe would be challenging Balor for the title at the show. My initial reaction was, "cool, that'll be fun to see live". Then I thought: "wait, they never mention specific matches for house shows on TV". You might get them on a localized ad during a commercial break, but never as part of the broadcast. Plus they did the "you never know what's gonna happen at a live event" bit they dust off every now and then. Which got me to thinking about all the Bullet Club related stuff happening on Raw right now and how it seems like they're positioning to have Balor debut soon and fued with Styles (possibly even costing him the title match next weekend), so of COURSE my brain went to, "hmmm.... I wonder if they'd do a title switch at a house show". Which is when I came to the stark realization that after all these years I'm still a total mark at heart and they totally fished me in. God bless them.

  19. Charming. Glad I wasn't around in 2006. Anyway, my apologies if anybody thought I was complaining about civility. Not my intent. I was trying to comment on the how certain names incited a very specific reaction that I found curious, as it seemed to point towards a bigger issue than simply "I disagree with that pick".
  20. But that's kind of my point. I'm not dismissing them as being niche, but when the reaction to certain mainstream names appearing high in the rankings is that it is a sign that some outsider votes have corrupted the process, it's basically saying, "if you don't recognize the greatness of these other genres then you're not really part of what we're about". Which is weird, because ranking somebody like Triple H is not, in and of itself, a sign that you're a mindless WWE mark. If you look at the names that are left there are about 15 who would qualify as modern (2000 and beyond) WWE workers. Yet the general cry over the last 48 hours or so is that they're somehow over-represented. The simple math of it is that 100 names in the grand scheme of things is not a lot, so no single era or style is going to dominate. For what it's worth, guys, I'm not upset or even annoyed. Nobody has attacked me personally and I'm not taking any of this personal. It's just that this reveal process has been a really curious social experiment in its own right and I'm fascinated by how people are reacting to it.
  21. Right. Which is why I find it curious that certain people react to the results as if it's some great failing of the process. There are a lot of voices in the project coming from a lot of different angles. In the end what we get is an aproximation of what we are as a collective. I find the differences in thought process fascinating, not infuriating. I only wish I had come on board sooner and participated to a greater degree on the before discussion rather than the after discussion.
  22. Fair enough, but I guess I would be more comfortable with that if it was more evenly balanced rather than the pitchfork raising "DEFEND THAT PICK!" mob mentality that sometimes has crept in (humorous though the pitchfork raising may be). As for the thread discussions, I know personally I didn't participate as much as I could have because I was focusing more on reading up on guys I didn't know about than I did on guys I was solid on. Plus, at some point it becomes clear that no matter how much you may like a guy there's no stemming the tide of hate against them and I don't need the stress of getting in a flame war over why or why not Shawn Michaels' sucks with people who have zero intention of having their view changed.
  23. I dunno, BIRPITHORAAF is surprisingly easy to say.
  24. Understood. But I believe by this point its been pretty openly stated by many people that they considered other aspects and yet there's still this sense of "how did guy X make it this high" when it's clear guy X got ranked by a lot of people for being an all-time legend. My head scratching is more about people who are still shocked that those names are doing well. (And by "all time legend" I mean someone like Hogan, who may not have the most sparkling in-ring career but who transcends that in a way that makes him great in certain people's eyes.)
  25. I have questions. Why is it that whenever someone votes high on a mainstream American worker there's this massive cry for them to defend their pick? Why doesn't that happen with any other genre? Why is it that when modern workers rank high people start claiming "recency bias"? How is working in the modern era any less valid than having worked 30 years ago? How come nobody is crying about the fact that Dragon Gate style workers all got shunted down to the bottom of the rankings or that there's almost no representation of hardcore style guys, like they're doing about the joshi, World of Sport, and other niche styles? What exactly would be the point of seeing results for only select voters? Isn't that basically saying, "we're gonna keep weeding out the ballots we don't like until we get the results we want", which invalidates the whole purpose of doing such a project? How come so many people react to certain nominees with "how can you vote him higher? he was a TERRIBLE worker!" when it was made quite clear by the people who started this that it was not necessarily a rankings of "workers"? Isn't it obvious at this point that some of us voted on an entirely different set of criteria than merely workrate? How many of you who didn't grow up in the 80's are basing your opinions on a lot of those workers on the various yearbook projects? I mean, weren't those yearbooks meant to be mostly highlights, in which case you were spared seeing a lot of those guys' crap work? In the end, what were people expecting this list to even mean? There were 100,000 wrestling fans crammed into a single stadium two weeks ago for ONE wrestling card. Do we really think that the opinions of the 150 of us who happened to discover this particular message board are really THAT much more valuable merely because we're a little extra nerdy about our fandom? Yeah, these are more or less rhetorical questions and I'm not trying to piss anybody off. I'm just really kind of dumbfounded by some of the reaction of people in the reveal threads. There's been a lot of fun talk and some quality ball busting, which I'm all for. But man, there's been a lot of eyeroll material too. I love that I've found this little corner of the wrestling world that is full of such passionate and knowledgeable fans, and I'm looking forward to the many discoveries that await me as I continue to dig into the areas of wrestling I have missed up till now, BUT... I've been a fan for well over 30 years now and it never once occurred to me that my opinion on anything - no matter how well thought out or researched - is any more valid than anybody else. I kind of feel like some people round here need to be reminded of that. I'm sorry if my liking WWE guys skewed the results some of you wanted, but liking WWE guys doesn't mean I don't know wrestling. It just means we have different taste, and I pretty sure THAT is what these results are reflecting.
