Dash & Dawson vs American Alpha instead. Samson vs Crews is the other match. Right. American Alpha. Total brainfart on my part. Thanks. Did they announce the Crews/Samson match? I must have missed it. Just thought it was teased.

I don't think anyone's saying it's all about pops, but rather that discounting the notion of giving an audience what they because it doesn't fit your personal view of what constitutes proper match structure or psychology is unfair.

    Kurt Angle

The funny thing to me, JerryvonKramer, is that ever since I started listening to the podcasts and lurking on PWO about a year ago I have sort of considered you my personal avatar, because I way more often than not find myself agreeing with your thoughts on things. I am discovering the Japan scene in the same manner you have and have struggled with Lucha to the same degree you have, for example. The only place we seem to veer off onto different tracks is regards to the modern product. Even then I can generally see what you're on about, I just happen to think that guys like Angle - whether you care for them or not - are indeed working within their own particular brand of psychology.

Near as I can tell this is the Dallas show as currently presented: Balor vs Joe Asuka vs Bayley Enzo & Cass vs Dash & Dawson Zayn vs Nakamura Aries vs Corbin That would appear to leave room for one more match (the NXT specials always have six), of which I think Samson vs Crews could be a likely add given the way last night played out. Or am I missing one that was already announced/is more obvious?

Whereas live crowds tend to go apeshit for Shawn Michaels and Kurt Angle matches, despite the fact that a lot of people here think neither one of those guys "knows how to work". It's all in what you value as an individual. It's the wrestling equivalent of cotton candy or a firework display. Firework displays have a long history of dazzling crowds, but they are quickly forgotten. That's a weird analogy to me because I don't know what the artistic counterpoint to fireworks would be. Kurt Angle to me is like Def Leppard. Yeah, most of their work is grossly overproduced and their lyrics are juvenile to the point of being incomprehensible, but I still love listening to Hysteria and 30 years on I still sing along to "Pour Some Sugar On Me" because it makes me feel good. Their job, like Angle's, is to entertain me. They accomplish that in spades. Do they make me think the way U2 might? No. Do they make me appreciate musicianship the way Stevie Ray Vaughan might? Hardly. But I don't always want those things. If you can succeed in what you set out to do as an entertainer then it doesn't matter what other people do. Kurt Angle might not structure his matches in a way that is as pleasing to hardcore fans as somebody like Misawa does, but he's still succeeding at his goal, because his goal is not necessarily to please those fans. His work is not quickly forgotten by me. It left an impression on me that lingers to this day, whether or not it holds up to microscopic scrutiny.

I get you. I just think where we differ is that you seem to think that if you do something as a performer that doesn't hit with the widest breadth of the audience then it's not worth doing, whereas I feel like if I do something in a show that gets a laugh from one person, it was worth it to me PROVIDED - and this is the key - that what I did wasn't a break in character, a break in the story we were trying to tell, or (the great theater sin) "drawing focus" away from somewhere else that should have been the attention, The thing I always tell people when I'm directing them is that you never know when an audience member is going to be looking at you, so you should always be acting, even if you're not the focus of the scene, because if somebody catches you not, it can ruin the experience for them. If an actor gets too big, or tries something that just doesn't fit with the vision of the show I'm trying to present, than I'll reign them in. My take on this Cesaro example is that if he's doing things in his matches that hardcore fans are picking up on and enjoying but that is going over the head of "the masses", it's still worthwhile to do, because it's not harming those same masses' ability to enjoy his work. I'm not a huge comic book guy. When I go to see the Marvel blockbuster movies with my friends who are, we enjoy them equally but on a different level. The first thing I always ask them when it's over is: "Did that satisfy your comic nerd mind?". If it did, then I feel like the movie succeeded, because I as essentially a novice was able to enjoy it on the grand scale while the more nitpicky fan was also satisfied. They will sometimes remark that they didn't care for certain liberties that were taken, but they understood it was a sacrifice that needed to be made in order to please me, the novice. It's kind of how I am able to justify thinking Randy Savage is one of the greatest workers of all time, because even though I don't want to have to sit through a Savage/George Steele match, I get that it is a necessary element to the show WWF was putting on at that time and that Randy was playing the role that was asked of him (and playing it well). Would I rather seen him go toe-to-toe with Tito Santana for 20 minutes? Sure. But that wasn't his job on that show, so I can't punish him for that. Had he gone out and tried to have a Santana match with Steele it would have sucked a dick without being entertaining to anybody. I judge wrestlers on their ability to entertain me. If a guy like Cesaro does stuff that I miss, I have no issue with it, provided the body of the match is entertaining (which I find it to be). I would only knock him if I felt he was doing things that were actively taking away from the match, and even that thought process is frought with pitfalls as it relies on me as a fan actually "knowing" what a match is trying to accomplish.

    Cesaro

The problem I have with that statement is, how would you (or any of us) know the difference? I've been acting for over 20 years. Whether I'm doing an intense drama or a balls out farce, I still approach my character construction the same way. My finished product will be wildly different because how I deliver that final performance is largely dependent on the style of the show and the people I'm working with, but I never dumb down my thought process just because I feel like the material is intended for a less cerebral audience. If your criticism of Cesaro is that he puts too much thought into his work because his perceived audience won't appreciate the level of detail he achieves, then I feel like you're basically punishing him for giving a shit about his work. Effort isn't always about physical exertion. As long as he doesn't actively do things in his matches that would run counter to the story that the promotion asks him to tell, I can't ever find fault in a wrestler putting forth as much effort - physical or mental - in a performance. You have to remember that for most of these guys the joy of their work is those 10 minutes a night between the ropes. Taking that away from them because an 8 year old wouldn't appreciate it seems weird to me.

    Jay Briscoe

Here's a handful of Jay singles matches worth checking out (all from ROH): 2002.08.24 vs Mark Briscoe 2004.03.13 vs Samoa Joe [steel Cage] 2006.12.09 vs Davey Richards 2013.12.14 vs Adam Cole vs Michael Elgin 2014.12.07 vs Adam Cole [Fight Without Honor] 2015.06.19 vs Jay Lethal 2015.10.17 vs Adam Page [No Holds Barred]
  10. My Gabe-era ROH loving heart wants to give you a big sloppy kiss for this. What a ride. Just wish more of the matches had the longer write-ups because I really enjoyed those. Thanks.

    Tiebreakers

I prefer "highest average vote". I discount the "highest single vote" because that means just person's opinion carries a lot of weight. The problem I have with "most ballots appeared on" is that there lots of candidates who are being left off of ballots not because they aren't worthy but rather due of a lack of familiarity with the particular voter. "Highest Average Vote" works for me because it says, "of all the people that managed to rank them, this one is the more highly thought of by those people". It's not perfect, but it feels like the most accurate way to separate two contenders.

Thanks. I've been meaning to go through Supersonic's Good Shit series and add his ratings. Guess I should start with PWG since that's my biggest blindspot.

    Samoa Joe

Yeah, I actually just realized this morning my ROH research stopped a couple of months into 2006, so I have lot of those matches still to add. Working on that hole today. I also don't have much in the way of PWG catalogued. Reviews for their shows were pretty scarce back in the day (at least on the sites I visited), so if anybody can point me in the direction of where some could be found, I'd appreciate it.

I actually have Joe sitting comfortably in the low 30's, InYourCase, which just goes to prove there's always somebody out there who's got a guy ranked higher than you. I'm sure someone else will beat me. Anyway, I'm not really the guy to try and influence people (especially at this late stage), but I figured I'd throw up a list of Joe's ****+ matches, at least according to my database (not necessarily my personal rankings). I have nothing on his trips to Japan, so if there's good stuff there I've missed it. 2002.10.05 ROH Low Ki vs Samoa Joe 2002.11.09 ROH Christopher Daniels/Donovan Morgan/Samoa Joe vs Doug Williams/Homicide/Low Ki 2003.11.01 ROH Christopher Daniels vs CM Punk vs Samoa Joe vs Steve Corino 2003.11.28 ROH AJ Styles/Samoa Joe vs Jay Briscoe/Mark Briscoe 2004.02.14 ROH BJ Whitmer vs Dan Maff vs Low Ki vs Samoa Joe 2004.03.13 ROH Jay Briscoe vs Samoa Joe [steel Cage] 2004.04.23 ROH Homicide vs Samoa Joe 2004.06.12 ROH CM Punk vs Samoa Joe 2004.06.24 ROH Austin Aries vs Bryan Danielson vs Colt Cabana vs Homicide vs Mark Briscoe vs Samoa Joe [sOTF Match] 2004.07.23 ROH Homicide vs Samoa Joe 2004.09.17 IWA-MS Roderick Strong vs Samoa Joe 2004.09.18 IWA-MS AJ Styles vs Bryan Danielson vs Samoa Joe 2004.09.18 IWA-MS Nigel McGuinness vs Samoa Joe 2004.10.02 ROH Bryan Danielson vs Samoa Joe 2004.10.15 ROH Rocky Romero vs Samoa Joe 2004.10.16 ROH CM Punk vs Samoa Joe 2004.11.06 ROH Bryan Danielson/Low Ki vs Jushin Liger/Samoa Joe 2004.12.04 ROH CM Punk vs Samoa Joe 2004.12.26 ROH Austin Aries vs Samoa Joe 2005.02.26 ROH Austin Aries vs Samoa Joe 2005.04.16 ROH Alex Shelley vs Colt Cabana vs Nigel McGuinness vs Samoa Joe [Double Stakes Match] 2005.05.07 ROH Jay Lethal vs Samoa Joe [Pure Wrestling Match] 2005.05.13 ROH Delirious vs Ebeteroh vs Jack Evans vs Samoa Joe 2005.06.04 ROH James Gibson vs Samoa Joe [Pure Wrestling Match] 2005.06.11 IWA-MS Necro Butcher vs Samoa Joe 2005.07.08 ROH Austin Aries vs Homicide vs James Gibson vs Samoa Joe 2005.07.09 ROH Austin Aries vs Samoa Joe [Pure Wrestling Match] 2005.07.17 TNA Chris Sabin vs Samoa Joe 2005.08.12 ROH Christopher Daniels vs CM Punk vs James Gibson vs Samoa Joe 2005.08.14 TNA AJ Styles vs Samoa Joe 2005.09.11 TNA AJ Styles vs Christopher Daniels vs Samoa Joe 2005.10.01 ROH Kenta Kobashi vs Samoa Joe 2005.10.02 ROH Homicide/Kenta Kobashi vs Low Ki/Samoa Joe 2005.10.25 TNA Alex Shelley/Christopher Daniels/Samoa Joe vs AJ Styles/Austin Aries/Sanjay Dutt 2005.11.05 ROH Christopher Daniels vs Samoa Joe 2005.11.13 TNA Alex Shelley/Christopher Daniels/Roderick Strong/Samoa Joe vs Austin Aries/Chris Sabin/Matt Bentley/Sanjay Dutt [Elimination X Match] 2005.12.11 TNA AJ Styles vs Samoa Joe 2006.01.15 TNA Christopher Daniels vs Samoa Joe 2006.02.12 TNA AJ Styles vs Christopher Daniels vs Samoa Joe 2006.03.25 ROH Bryan Danielson/Samoa Joe vs Kenta/Naomichi Marafuji 2006.03.30 ROH Christopher Daniels vs Samoa Joe 2006.04.11 TNA Christopher Daniels vs Samoa Joe 2006.08.05 ROH Bryan Danielson vs Samoa Joe 2006.08.13 TNA Monty Brown vs Rhino vs Samoa Joe [Falls Count Anywhere] 2006.11.19 TNA Kurt Angle vs Samoa Joe 2006.12.10 TNA Kurt Angle vs Samoa Joe 2007.02.16 ROH Samoa Joe vs Takeshi Morishima 2007.03.11 TNA Christian Cage vs Samoa Joe 2007.04.15 TNA Abyss/AJ Styles/Christian Cage/Scott Steiner/Tomko vs Jeff Jarrett/Kurt Angle/Rhino/Samoa Joe/Sting [Lethal Lockdown] 2007.06.17 TNA AJ Styles vs Chris Harris vs Christian Cage vs Kurt Angle vs Samoa Joe [King Of The Mountain] 2007.10.13 TNA Christian Cage vs Samoa Joe 2008.04.13 TNA Kurt Angle vs Samoa Joe [six Sides Of Steel] 2009.06.21 TNA AJ Styles vs Jeff Jarrett vs Kurt Angle vs Mick Foley vs Samoa Joe [King Of The Mountain] 2009.11.15 TNA AJ Styles vs Christopher Daniels vs Samoa Joe 2010.02.14 TNA AJ Styles vs Samoa Joe 2012.05.13 TNA AJ Styles vs Samoa Joe 2012.06.10 TNA Austin Aries vs Samoa Joe 2012.07.08 TNA Kurt Angle vs Samoa Joe 2015.03.13 ROH ACH vs Samoa Joe 2015.03.28 ROH Kyle O'Reilly vs Samoa Joe 2015.10.07 NXT Baron Corbin/Rhyno vs Finn Balor/Samoa Joe 2015.12.16 NXT Finn Balor vs Samoa Joe 2016.03.09* NXT Sami Zayn vs Samoa Joe [best of 3 Falls] So yeah, there's a pretty nasty dropoff once you get to 2007, thanks mostly to TNA's horrible booking and the lack of any reviews for stuff Joe may have been doing elsewhere at the time. I did poke around on the scores for his TNA run over that time and there's a LOT of stuff in the *** range. He had pockets of shit here and there (the tag run with Magnus against Crimon & Matt Morgan provided about what you'd expect and went on for WAY too long), but for the most part he was serviceable without being exceptional thanks mostly to his position on the card. Looking back though you see a guy who had a phenomenal peak run from 2004-2006. He worked guys of all sizes and styles, producing high quality work with all. One of the things that really jumps out me about his career is his versatility. He could work technical classics (his run with the Pure title has a number of them), wild brawls (see Homicide fued or the Necro Butcher match), stiff strong style (vs Low Ki and Kobashi), or a more high-paced junior style (his TNA X-Division run). He worked long matches (the Punk series and the recent Zayn match) and plenty of furious sprints. He also seemed to really know how to play his role without ever not being Joe. The ROH 4-Way against Delirious, Ebeteroh & Jack Evans is a great example at it was a total comedy match that Joe managed to somehow fit into without suddenly becoming "comedy Joey". I also note that he stood out strongly in a lot of multi-man matches, which is not an easy thing to do. Whether you love them or hate them you have to acknowledge that they are a big part of new millennium booking and they usually fail to live up to the level of the assembled talent, but Joe made his count. I'm a big proponent of giving guys their due for managing to find a way to entertain when they're handicapped by the company they work for (be it booking or just style). The All Japan guys were blessed to rarely have to work anything more than straight-up matches (no gimmicks, I mean). Some of them might struggle if saddled with American style booking, so it's something I always keep in mind. I have Joe pretty high because he along with Styles, Danielson, and Punk got me through the mid-2000's when the WWE was having some very lean years and I wasn't yet into the Japanese stuff. ROH kept wrestling alive for me over that span and Joe was the lynchpin of that company during their height. His return to form in NXT makes me believe he was better than his late years TNA run let him be.

I do live too. You know better, but you are into the live experience so you kind of put that out of your mind. Which begs the question of why we see so many dead crowds and always have to write them off as being jaded. Guess it just goes to show how badly people want to root for Sami, so good on him.

    What's next for you?

Since Matt D just brought up the apparently impending Portland set, I have a question as a (relative) newb to the board. When you guys all refer to the "All Japan 80's set" or the "1990 Yearbook" or any of those, what specifically are you referring to? I gather they are homemade comps, but are they still available or were they more of a "you had to be there when" kind of deal. Always feel like I'm outside looking in on some of those discussions. Thx.

"Like if Sami got a pin from the Blue Thunder Bomb when it's never gotten a win yet on TV." Still amazes me how much the live audiences pop for nearfalls when he does that move since I don't recall him ever winning with it. I mean, it's GOOD that they do, because popping for nearfalls makes a match awesome, but their legit shock is puzzling to me.

I hate spoilers on taped stuff that hasn't aired, but if somebody comes to this thread the day after a show airs not expecting to find spoilers on the previous night's episode, that's kind of on them.
  20. "If I was to only watch Triple H's best matches, and just plain ignored all the week to week bullshit that happened over the years I'd have a much higher opinion of him." Therein lies one of the main problems I have with the project overall and why, in the end, I don't sweat it. There are too many wrestlers, wrestling too many styles, over too many eras, with inconsistencies in footage availability, quality, and type. No one on this board has the ability to look at every name in contention with a full-on microscope. For some guys the footage doesn't exist, which means we maybe miss their peaks. But it also means for others who do have a lot we see their valleys. On top of that it's next to impossible to completely filter out our own personal history as fans. Some guys we grew up on and our opinions on them are tainted by what they meant to us and how we viewed some of their matches at the time. Sometimes the nostalgia helps (especially if we haven't revisted those matches in later years), and sometimes it hurts (as in the Triple H case, because most of us lived through his reign and remember all the crap). Other guys we're basically spot-checking select matches to see if our personal opinion falls in line with the general reputation. It's all a crapshoot in the end. I'm looking at my list as "of all the guys I have had the chance to see, here are the ones who I feel delivered the most consistent enterainment in whatever role they were aksed to fill". I already know that I'm leaving guys off that if I had the time to really look into I would probably like and would find their way onto my list. So be it. I hold no delusion that the final list is going to "mean" anything in the long run. Putting it together is a destination point that has allowed me to really expand what I watch as a fan, and the aftermath will be more of the same. The purpose of this project to me isn't to answer an unanswerable question, but rather a way to shine light into the corners of this hobby that we don't always look at. I may shake my head when I read some of ya'lls opinions on guys I love, but in the end it just serves to validate for me that my own opinion is just that - my own - rather than me being brainwashed into accepting a universal take, since it's quite clear at this point there IS no such thing. Vote for whoever you want. It's not gonna effect any of these guys' lives. And no matter WHAT you do, we're still gonna be debating this shit into infinity. Why else would we be here?
  21. I'd like to think Bryan's rep will age gracefully over the years if for no other reason than his ROH stuff is holding up well now while a some of the other stuff from that promotion's era is not. Plus it feels like we're swinging towards more of a mat-based future, and while not a Thatcher or Sabre, he worked more of that style than most guys. Plus he's not likely to dump on his own legacy with shitty behavior or sad comebacks. He seems too grounded for either.

Great match between Joe and Zayn *WAS* the latest show.
  23. Odd to me that people want to compare the two so directly. Bryan's run in ROH was that of a bigger guy, because the promotion was made up of mostly small-to-midsize workers. It wasn't until he got to WWE that his size became a defining characteristic of his work. They are completely different cases to me, despite Bryan's late career underdog push.
  24. I did this for 2015 and some people found it a handy resource so I figured I'd try to do the same with 2016. 25. I know it's like 19 months after the fact, but what the hell, I'm still catching up on old Titans episodes. Anyway, quick anecdote for Johnny after his brief tirade against Ted Arcidi in this episode. Back in 2001 I did a community theater show just outside of Boston with Ted. Nice enough guy, but he wanted NO part of talking about his wrestling career. Totally blew me off when I brought it up (outside of acknowledging it).
