I really like Shibata, and that didn't change watching this match. From my perspective, his performance was the most intriguing of the match. A lot has been laid out above, but I thought his dramatics and intensity were great. So, in my world, this is probably around a **** match. I sincerely don't mean any offense at all by this, but it's surprising to see this mentioned alongside the classics from All Japan in the 90's. There seems to be a lack of structure or storytelling that I feel disconnected from or unable to find that would put this in that high of regard for me. I really don't mean any offense by that either. I sincerely think that is one of the great things about wrestling, and tapping into another discussion on the board, that is why I see wrestling as an art we can all enjoy our own tastes in. I personally just can't compare it to those classics, or even to (for example) Ibushi and Nakamura from a few years back. I guess that's why I can't go as high as some in my world, but, nonetheless I had a great time watching this. After that insane headbutt, it really grabbed me when Shibata started working the submission following. Ross had another good call here on AXS. I have a son that is three, and he wandered out of his bedroom when this started. So, I let him watch the first 10 minutes or so with me. It was funny hearing him talk about Shibata and Okada. He asked me about Chibata and ToeKada when he woke up this morning. I do like the story of Okada trying to play Shibata's game. This is one I'd like to come back to in a few months and see where it lands.

Ross did a great job calling this on AXS, and I didn't hear the original commentary. So, I'm not sure the difference that might have made for me. I thought this was super entertaining and specifically because of Suzuki. Like someone else mentioned, he just looked like a monster. I really liked his facial expressions and antics. He made this a fun match. I thought it was really good, but I wouldn't consider it "great" (to me).

I really enjoy the back and forth between Rick and Lex when this starts off, and Luger nailed Steiner with a MONSTER lariat. Sting immediately picked things up when he hit that cross body to the outside on Rick, and crowd is came out of their chairs. Rick no sold when he came back in for pop and tagged Scott in for some bomb throwing. Scott was super hyped, and Dusty did a good job selling how "electric" it felt. Sure, there are some minor mistakes and lot's of no-selling, but man they gave the crowd what they wanted. It's no wonder, at the time, they stole the show on that night. These four huge faces went fast and loud, and it accomplished what they set out for, "electricity." The finish falls pretty flat for me, but I guess one team wasn't going to job clean to the other. I look back on this match and moment (including Sting and Nikita) fondly. This holds up as a really fun sprint, but not a MOTYC (as I remember PWI had this listed as the MOTY in their magazine as a kid). Final grade = fun.

This is a really good stiff and quick match. They worked it smart using the serious head wounds as a way sell the shortness of the match. With everyone else, I would love to have gotten more.

To this point in the year, this is my favorite of the full-length USWA matches from Texas & Memphis that we've gotten. Gilbert gives a great performance here during the FIP segment, and of course I love all of the brawling. I agree with Loss in that it felt very refreshing to watch a full USWA segment that wasn't dedicated to getting Eric Embry over.

This has been my favorite discovery journeying through 1991 to this point. I assume this made the Top 500 of the 90's list, but I must have been unable to find it online at the time. This really blew me away! Total MOTYC. Here are some things I loved about this match: -Negro Casas fighting out of holds frantically -The precision and tightness of the holds Santo was applying -The creativity in reversals from Casas -The personality and presence of Casas (which for me, is a big part of what tips the scale from great to MOTYC) -The pacing -The dropkick that started the second fall -The low blow after the second fall I can go on. I really thought this was incredible. I'm not sure where it will end up ranking yet, but it is in my top 5 of 1991 without question.

I agree that the arm work at the beginning looked really good, but it's kind of a bummer it didn't come into play at all throughout the course of the match. NBD though, as I thought they really delivered with the excitement down the stretch. A really good match that wasn't quite great to me, but overall it was really entertaining. I enjoyed it quite a bit. I think the handheld aspect adds a level of mystique that might bump up the enjoyment level for those of us that like to find hidden treasures. It's kind of like the basement tapes or garage recordings that might get released of one of your favorite bands.

I agree that this is the best of the Brazos matches to this point. Atlantis brought structure to what usually feels a little aimless to me. Atlantis is the man.

[1991-04-27-WWF-Saturday Night's Main Event] Bret Hart vs Ted DiBiase
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
This was a really fun match. Sherri didn't seem too involved to me, as I really loved all of the stuff she was doing here. That includes the Piper stuff too, she's just great. Bret and Ted had a really good match here. One I'll remember, and I'm pretty sure I have never seen this before.- 25 replies

Oh man, that punch from Doc! It looked like to me that second punch knocked someone out. That was crazy! It looked like some of the security, or possibly other fans, were going to help the gentleman that was laid out. I really loved this, and as others have said, it was really Stan Hansen that made the match special to me. I think it might be my favorite match on the card, and I agree we got three great matches, and one really fun match.

[1991-04-18-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Kenta Kobashi vs Dan Kroffat
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
I thought this was pretty fun. It had it's moments. I enjoyed the killer looking shoulder block Kobashi laid into Kroffat, and when Kroffat went off with some fiery punches. For it's spot on the card, this was a really enjoyable contest... not seeking greatness, but meant to be entertaining and fun. I think they accomplished that with the crowd (and with me).- 13 replies

[1991-04-13-USWA-Memphis-TV] Jerry Lawler vs Eric Embry (Cage)
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
The Jerry Lawler punches in this match were just on another level. This looked spectacular. After seeing the highlights of the Jarrett/Prichard footage, I would love to get my hands on the full versions of these two matches. This looked it could really be another one of Lawler's classic main events. This was really cool to see. -
[1991-04-13-USWA-Memphis-TV] Jeff Jarrett, Steve Austin and Tom Pritchard
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
That match looked awesome. I don't know if it's possible, but I would love to see the full version of that match surface some day. I haven't been as much into their previous matches as others (I saw them as good, but not great), but this looked pretty incredible. Really enjoyed the segment as a whole. -
Current Favorite to Watch: AJ Styles, but it's probably The Revival when they are at full force. Favorite Recent Post on this Board: This one Favorite Thing About the Wrestling Landscape in the Past Three Months: I've enjoyed how NXT has proven to stand strong even after the talent pool was raided, and also that New Japan is coming to the US to put on those live shows for AXS and NJ World. I hope this leads to more current TV in the US for their product outside of NJ World.
-
With the Meltzer talk, I thought this was pretty interesting. I just finished the episode of New Japan on AXS with Suzuki vs. Okada (which I really enjoyed), and they had a commercial that revolved around the Wrestling Observer. The commercial stated that the Wrestler Observer voted NJ Promotion of the Year, best weekly TV, and they had the top three matches of the year. I could have missed it, but that's the first time I've seen the Observer mentioned like say a Rolling Stone review would be mentioned for a TV series advertisement.

It's interesting. Typically, I'll be watching wrestling from the 80's on my TV, and I'll let RAW play in the background. If a moment happens that catches my eye, like the Joe/Lesnar moment, then I'll hit pause and switch to WWE on my tablet. I enjoy Smackdown more than Raw, so I'll typically pick up where it is after my kids go to bed and watch it through. But, I guess what I'm saying is... don't feel sorry for me if I don't see this as the Golden Age of wrestling, because it doesn't have to be the GA for me to enjoy it. I just prefer how stories were told in the past. That's not to say it won't change in the future, or that the current product doesn't offer any great stories. There are matches I absolutely love every year. I've never stopped watching. I subscribe to the network. I hit up NJ World and RevPro from time to time (and others when I want to). I still just prefer the way stories were told in the past. And, I do think it is particularly the matches with unrelenting highspots and multiple kickouts/false finishes that get me down. It just weakens the story for me personally. It's extremely hard for me to enjoy the Young Bucks, even though I think they sound like cool dudes. I don't think Kenny Omega is one of the greatest of all-time, but that's okay. I think of it like The Godfather vs. Transformers. Not everyone is going to like the Godfather (Flair vs. Steamboat Clash VI), in fact some will think it is boring, or maybe even too long. I love the script and the story and the acting and how it falls together perfectly. In my opinion it's one of the greatest movies of all-time. However, I totally dislike Transformers/Michael Bay productions (Young Bucks matches that get pimped or Owens/Cena from a few years back - just examples) - I think the scripts are bad and the acting isn't that great, and I don't see the art of explosions for explosions. But that's okay, because obviously a lot of people do. Those films make more money and seem to entertain way more people, and Michael Bay wouldn't care what a guy like me thinks. So, it's all good. I love wrestling. I love the current product and I love the old product. I find more things enjoyable from the old, so it's awesome that so much is at our fingertips. But, I'll keep watching the new. I hope the NJPW show in CA coming up is awesome, and I hope Lesnar and Joe kill it. I wanted to come back and add that part of my enjoyment of the current product are the guys that I think keep that style or art of storytelling alive. For me, some of those guys include AJ Styles and the Revival. Of course there are others, and what's interesting is that a guy like Cena does both.

[1991-04-13-WWF-Superstars] Funeral Parlor: Ultimate Warrior & The Undertaker
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
I'm with you guys that mentioned the commentary. It totally made this. The entire segment was good, but the commentary on top really made it something special. I agree that having Savage get serious, after just losing his career to the Warrior, was a fantastic touch. Savage totally delivered too. -
I agree that Jarrett looked stronger in his early years than he looked later in his career, but I didn't get as much out of this as some. I thought it was fine, and I know the chain in the tights (or something in the tights) gets a good crowd reaction, but it seems they go to that well a lot during this period. Now, don't get me wrong. I love Jerry Lawler and Bill Dundee. I love Memphis and the USWA Texas stuff I've been watching over the years. So, I'm not hating here. I just think I lean towards this being more of the same (with a dash of good stuff from Jarrett) making it more of a good match than a great match for me. I think they are just in a little bit of slump, and I will probably get back into it full steam when it picks back up (I hope it does). I may have to come back to it, because some of the thoughts here by others make me think I just wasn't feeling it today. We'll see...

Morton was fired up when this started! He was incredible. Loved his punches vs Flair's chops. It's really always a treat when you get to see Morton and Flair work with each other. Yeah, if it had been allowed to develop it could have been great. I agree, funny how the "we want Sting" chant was ignored. Could have been great, but still was really fun.

[1991-04-05-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Kenta Kobashi
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
Fun match. I love how intense the side headlocks are, and watching this today just makes me want to see more headlocks locked in like that today. It was a little short, or maybe the ending just felt a little abrupt, but overall I really enjoyed the action and thought it was worked really well.- 11 replies

[1991-04-06-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Jumbo Tsuruta vs Toshiaki Kawada
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
I really loved this one. Jumbo was so explosive in the beginning and I like how his left leg came into play after his initial charging blows with it. Kawada played the underdog role perfectly with his selling and giving it all he had. It seemed like the crowd was super into this down the stretch, and so was I. This is a great match.- 15 replies

[1991-03-24-WWF-Wrestlemania VII] Hulk Hogan vs Sgt. Slaughter
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in March 1991
I think I agree that this is Hogan's best match at Mania. Sarge really put on a show here and fed into Hogan. His bumps were so damn entertaining. Even in 2017, and Hogan has never been my guy, but even in 2017 I found myself getting into and totally buying into that Hulk up. I agree with some of the complaints, but on the other side, I do think Hogan looks pretty cool with red, white, and blue bandana brother.- 16 replies

If Scott hasn't seen Tito Santana vs. Randy Savage from 05/04/1986 (Toronto) yet, then he really needs to! It's the best of the feud, and I think he'd really love it. It's one I'd go ****3/4 on. It's incredible.
