  1. Man I liked this match a lot. Triple H's best career match at this point? Has to be the best Triple H/Michaels match of them all. This got a lot of time, and though Hunter isn't over at that level, this was good enough to have been a satisfying PPV title defense. Opening stuff is classic heel/face schtick with Michaels getting the better of Hunter with some comedy thrown in. Michaels sells really well for Hunter when he's on offense. The Michaels/Davey Boy build isn't super hot or anything, but I'm liking it a lot because it's such a simpler and better format than how WWE book these days -- pick one challenger of the month and focus on a simple build to the big PPV title defense.
  2. Hahaha. This, tribute to the troops -- the real deep state is WWF/E pushing for Iraq wars so they can piggyback with their patriotic philanthropy initiatives!
  3. Pretty interesting segment in the context of WWF at the time. All very outlandish, gimmicky characters, very WWF, but all with a much darker or edgy aspect than gimmicky WWF characters of older years, plus a more 'crash TV' feel to the segment. Goldust really feels like a big star. Dustin Rhodes is just a hell of a wasted potential in wrestling -- incredible worker, good promo, could work a character. Very good segment. I was thinking that this might have been a fun triple threat match to do.
  4. Okay, I gotta say, the splash through the table and the triple jump moonsault all the way across the ring were pretty awesome. But this is worse than their last match, more transparently a spotfest, sloppy in a bad way and oftentimes boring when they weren't working their set up spots. But they do succeed in making RVD feel like a big deal as an up and comer when the match is over.
  5. Definitely might be the best ECW match ever. This is one of those ECW match that is very much rooted in being a more 'traditional' wrestling match, but still makes use of weapons, crowd brawling, etc. as supplements to the match without it really feeling like a "hardcore" match. This pulls that off spectacularly. There was plenty of great straight up wrestling in this match. For all the big spots, my favorite part might have been that awesome sling-shot rollup that Scorpio did. The progression of this match from Douglas playing around, not caring about the belt to the match becoming an epic fight and Douglas ending up giving it his all realizing the level of competition the belt offers is awesome. This really had the feel of a classic title match. Post-match angle is really good. It gets the belt over huge, Douglas comes off as sincere but still kind of a dick, so Scorpio laying him out isn't a total heel move.
  6. This definitely went on long enough to get tiresome. It really should have ended after the Stevie spot and Dreamer hitting the chair shot on Brian Lee. After that they do a bunch of big spots, but the match feels past its expiration date so they don't connect too much. Crowd was still into it though. For the most part I thought this was an entertaining match, constant action and something going on everywhere.
  7. A classic match type: Two great wrestlers have a very good, short match on Nitro while the commentary is distracted by unrelated angles. Ric coming out to live the high life on Savage's money was funny though. Good match especially toward the end, the top rope gutbuster looked great.
  8. I like that even in this segment, which is supposed to be a put-on by the heels to screw with Shawn (I assume), they still script it to put Shawn over even in this context -- "He was the best I ever had!"
  9. I didn't think too much of this match at first. The tornado tag structure with them not being able to use the outside or even run the ropes made for a confined, disorganized match. But once the countdown hit 5 minutes it really took off. The action got a lot more intense and focused with the teams looking for the finish before the explosion. The spots for the explosion pads on the outside were good, as was Hayabusa's dive over one of them. I thought the big explosion came off well and the post-explosion selling was good.
  10. Definitely a likely candidate for best death match of all time. In terms of structurally incorporating death match elements into a match, I don't think it's possible to do it any better than this. The exploding ropes were an integral part of the match, many segments of the match build around them for extended periods of time, and the high spots of the match involved paying them off, but they by no means totally dominated the match, and the wrestlers weren't totally preoccupied with incorporating them. The beginning of the match is all about building to the first rope spot; it's a gradual build where each gets closer and closer to sending her opponent into the ropes and the stakes get higher and higher. The exploding rope spots are sold like death, and with the rest of the match being big moves and selling, this really feels like a war. That German suplex spot is up there for spot of the year. And what I really liked about it was even though it was Toyota executing the move to Kudo, Kudo actually came out of it with the advantage. Really got the ropes over as super dangerous, if you take a spill into them there's no telling what level of damage you might receive. Coming up from the spot Kudo nails a couple huge moves for the win, including nasty powerbomb that dumps Toyota right on her neck. Post match Kudo is immobile and has to be lifted off of Toyota's body onto a stretcher. Really excellent match.
  11. They don't waste too much time before getting to the hardcore spots. This wasn't exceptional, but definitely good. One relatively minor spot that I liked a lot was Kanemura's apron dropkick.

    1996 MOTY

Updated for April. 1996 has really heated up these last two months. Lots of good matches and angles.
  13. I thought the match was decent, though not as good as their earlier match. The chokeslam out of the figure four was a cool spot -- and Giant wins! I was totally expecting a screwy finish.
  14. Fun match, they made use of the environment in a way that fit their brawling style well.
  15. Cornette is a riot here. Shawn also does well, actually feels like a fighting babyface with an edge. This looks like the start of another good title program coming off the win. And yeah, I was thinking that Lothario is just totally useless when he came walking out with Shawn here.
  16. Biggest match of the year! Biggest match in modern Japanese wrestling history? And with this famously being the match that inspired Bischoff to do the NWO angle, this is a hugely significant match for 1996 on top of everything else. This match definitely feels enormous. The crowd goes nuts for the introduction and the entrances are great. Lots of gravitas to the pre-match proceedings. The match itself is definitely worked like a big match. It's not about constant competitive exchanges and bomb throwing, it's about building to a couple huge moments where Hashimoto or Takada land a series of big shots. And when those moments happen the offense looks great and the crowd erupts. Takada landing some nasty looking clean kicks on Hashimoto only to have one flash countered with a leg sweep is one of the best spots ever, and that pop for the final brain buster is epic. I don't think this is a high end MOTYC type match, but it's worked very well in context and is awesome to see.
  17. I liked this a lot but not as much as others. Fujinami's topes at the beginning were awesome. Fujinami bleeds a bunch and some of his brief comeback teases are great, especially one where he's firing back with punches. But overall, I feel like this was largely just an exceptionally good competitive squash.
  18. I was pretty bored by this outside of the big spots. Shinzaki's bump from the apron across the guardrail was awesome though. Muta writing on the board in Shinzaki's blood was a cool spot too, and judging by the crowd reaction it probably comes across even better if you can read it.
  19. I didn't think much of this match. The very opening stuff was good and Sasuke's big dive as sweet, as was an asai moonsault he does later. They pick it up a bit toward the end, but a lot of this bored me.
  20. A big step up from anything else we've seen from WWF this year. All the 'hardcore' spots in this match felt wonderfully organic and unique. Shawn grabbing Hugo's boot ruled. The powerbomb through the table was a real holy shit spot in context, unexpected in a WWF match of this era and totally not telegraphed. The fire extinguisher spot really came out of left field and got a huge reaction, leading to a really, really great comeback from Shawn. Maybe my favorite part of the match was Shawn going out to get a chair from the wreckage, but it's tangled up in all the wires, he tries to shake the wires off but can't, and just drags them all into the ring and is assaulting Diesel with a chair with all these wires hanging off of it. Awesome scene. The ending is great with Shawn paying back the low blow. Shawn looks awesome as a champion coming out of this, a real tough guy who can take anything a bigger man can dish out and still come out on top. This was a really good first program for Shawn.
  21. I didn't really get into this one overall and my attention waned for a lot of it. But there were some really good moments in here -- Yammamoto hits a nasty slap to score a knock down at one point, and there's a brief but really intense strike exchange towards the end.
  22. This match is short but man is it awesome. Just a blitz of beautiful, snug, hard hitting action. That clothesline is a spot of the year candidate and Dusty appreciating the match is fun. It seems crazy to like this match more than the PPV match because it's so short, but I do.
  23. Diesel started this off really good but Shawn really took it over with some firey delivery. This feud pulls off the personal edge well. Good for the build.
  24. I hated the ending at first because I was actually loving the match, but what followed made this a great segment overall. Cool stipulation and this match does feel huge. Flair feels like the biggest star in wrestling during his entrance. Match was really fun, mostly with Sting and Luger taking it to Flair. At the end the Giant gets in and there's an awesome segment with Sting trying to break Giant's grip around Luger's neck. Flair throws the coffee in Giant's face and the match is thrown out. Giant is heated after the matches, challenges Flair to a title match and Flair accepts; great promos from both there. Flair: "I don't like the way you've been looking at the girls anyway!"
  25. Good ending clip. Hot finishing stretch mainly built around Vega scoring super close nearfalls on Goldust. Austin costs Vega the match.
