[1996-04-20-ECW-Hostile City Showdown] Raven vs Shane Douglas
tim replied to Loss's topic in April 1996
Douglas' extended run of offense was pretty damn good I thought, especially his two big dives which were pretty unexpected. The first one especially came out of nowhere and looked pretty wild. Action was pretty solid throughout, and the overbooking toward the end kept it interesting. Entertaining match and actually did have a feel of a big main event in ECW context. Post-match angle ruled. I guess this is a double-turn with Scorp and it works very well and feels natural. -
[1996-04-20-ECW-Hostile City Showdown] Sabu vs Rob Van Dam
tim replied to Loss's topic in April 1996
Definitely more spot-oriented than the Sabu matches against Mikey and Scorpio. Van Dam does a couple cool things. I found this enjoyable enough for a spotfest. -
Really good match, total presentation even better. Great angle to play off the previous 60 minute draw. Both guys look good on the match, and they even work in one of the most cutting edge spots of 2017 wrestling: the countout tease! Good kind of screwy ending.

There was a point in the match I was thinking it was pretty great, everyone was looking really good, and it was definitely the best Joshi match of the year so far. A little bit later I was even thinking, even though this match is getting on in length, it wasn't getting tiresome yet. Then they kept going, and then they kept going, and then they kept going! And by the end I was tapped out. There was plenty of cool stuff in this match, and a much shorter version would have been great. But like most Joshi this year, I was actively thankful to see it end.

[1996-04-20-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Steve Williams vs Akira Taue
tim replied to Loss's topic in April 1996
Oh damn this match was incredible. This was a nasty heavyweight fight. Everything was hard-fought sloppy in the best way possible. Crowd is super into Taue. Williams gets most of the offense for the bulk of the match, with Taue's brief comebacks getting big reactions. At one point he gets knocked off the apron into the barricade, ROARS and charges back into the ring with the crowd going nuts for him. Williams teases the dragon suplex which leads to Taue's comeback and he hits a succession of big moves. The homestretch is truly epic. Both Taue and Williams look like they're about one second away from throwing up and passing out. Each move feels like a deathblow, of particular note are Doc's gutwrench powerbomb and Taue's big kick right at the end. Taue's win feels truly significant.- 7 replies

Coming out of this match I want to see Albright against these guys in singles matches. He doesn't spend a whole lot of time in the ring here but when he's in he's explosive. His suplexes look nasty even in the context of AJPW suplexes. He starts teasing the full nelson from the very beginning of the match, but when he actually hits it the camera almost misses the whole move! It does look great on replay though. Akiyama also looked great, he worked some really good if brief exchanges with Albright and a really good one with Kawada. Just great action in this match.

[1996-04-19-ECW-Plymouth Meeting, PA] Sabu vs 2 Cold Scorpio
tim replied to Loss's topic in April 1996
A 20 minute draw definitely works out much better for them than a 30 minute draw. I liked their February match quite a lot but as a match, this was definitely a lot better and more focused. This felt like a real, scrappy, hard fought match with a legit clash of styles. Scorp's offense looks great here, especially this slingshot superkick that he does which was totally awesome. Crowd starts jeering "boring" about 15 seconds in when they're doing an arm wrench, and chant for tables throughout. But it's not overwhelmingly annoying. They set up a table early on and work around it for the rest of the match, and the spot where they finally pull the trigger on it is really good. Unlike their February match which started to lose its steam at the end, this match actually peaks toward the end with Sabu getting a run of big moves but selling that he can't capitalize quickly to make the cover. Very good match. -
Great promo from Bret. He does come across as whiny, but he also has valid points and is sincere. Bret is a great promo and he delivers this very well, good continuation of some subtle verging-on-heelness that started with his dismissive, condescending remarks toward Shawn during the Mania build up.

Cornette promo is good but Vader left a bigger impression on me this segment. The way the shot him with the camera made him look very impressive; his rope running and grunting could have come across lame on paper, but Vader makes it intimidating.

[1996-04-13-ECW-Massacre on Queens Boulevard] Sabu vs Mikey Whipwreck
tim replied to Loss's topic in April 1996
Another awesome Mikey ECW brawl. More spotty than the Cactus match but still definitely not just a spotfest. Sabu's aura is definitely here in this match in a good way but it's Mikey's style that makes this feel like a real fight rather than a stunt show. The spot where they pull the trigger on the table set up across the apron and barricade is really, really good, as is the ending. Lots of nasty spots while retaining the feel of a real competitive match, and decent enough selling. I liked this a ton. -
[1996-04-12-ECW-Glenolden, PA] Bubba Ray Dudley vs 2 Cold Scorpio
tim replied to Loss's topic in April 1996
Always great to see schtick getting over in front of the audience, opening dance off ruled. Then they went on to have a pretty damn good match too. Crowd was hot throughout and Scorp hits an awesome plancha that gets big distance. -
[1996-04-09-AJW-Champions] Aja Kong & Mima Shimoda vs Manami Toyota & Kaoru Ito

My biggest gripe with Joshi so far this year is the length, so I appreciate that this is JIP. Good action in these last few minutes with some sick double stomps and a good ending. -
Huge pop for Warrior, way better than the Wrestlemania return. This is definitely an edgy segment. Warrior/Goldust feels like a really cool program here. Putting Warrior with an act that's pushing the envelope more than any other in the Big 2 helps him not feel like a lame nostalgia act.

I liked this match a good bit. Opening matwork was pretty good and the first fall ended on a nice sequence, and the move that ended the second fall was a beauty. Third fall was really good, Santo looked spectacular busting out the big moves and dives. With how flip happy the modern wrestling scene is, I wonder why people don't try that senton dive more often, it's awesome. Very watchable and fun match.

What a match! Each team takes turns working over a guy for an extended period of time for awhile; TAKA getting worked over in the beginning is a highlight, all the bigger guys hitting huge offense on him, and he stages a great firey comeback. The control segments start to feel more and more nasty as times goes on, each being very good and the transitions between them very good. The ending stretch is high-end MPro level wild while still feeling competitive and not going overboard. Tons of awesome spots -- there's this great sandwich dropkick from Kanemoto and Otani where Otani comes into the frame at the last minute. Wild action and nearfalls ends with TAKA hitting two Michinoku Drivers in a row on Samurai for the pin. One of my favorite matches of the year so far.

Well, 1996 exploded in March. Tons of great matches, WWF TV got better and WCW TV had some good stuff too. Nice variety. Clearly, I like Cactus/Mikey more than just about everyone.

[1996-03-31-WWF-Wrestlemania XII] Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels (60-Minute Iron Man)
tim replied to Loss's topic in March 1996
The second half of this match is definitely very good, but man that first half was totally dull. Just very uninteresting hold trading, just sitting in them passing time. The one thing that can be said positively about the first half though, was that it progressed very gradually, so by the middle of the match when it kicked into gear, it did feel like they had already had a grueling contest. But it was still boring. Although the shot of Michaels knocking out the time keeper was really good, and gave them something to replay a couple of times while Bret was sitting in a headlock. But the second half is really good. Mostly build around Bret working on the back. He busts out all the offense and the threat of the Sharpshooter looms large, and the one time its teased is really well done. Michaels few, brief comeback teases are all really good and well received by the crowd. Towards the end Michaels comesback and dishes out some big offense and nearfalls. The Sharpshooter at the end felt like a big deal since they didn't bust it out until then. Very ending with the double SCM was good too. There was definitely a really good match in here. No doubt it should definitely, definitely not have been an Ironman match, and it should definitely, definitely not have gone 0-0. -
[1996-03-31-WWF-Wrestlemania XII] Roddy Piper vs Goldust (Hollywood Backlot Brawl)
tim replied to Loss's topic in March 1996
Back in the ring it's a pretty decent brawl and Piper getting his revenge at the end is an entertaining ridiculous spectacle.- 18 replies
