  1. This went a bit too long and did get repetitive at times I felt, but overall this was a very good match. They were really on top of each other the whole match in a way that got over the close-quarters aspect of the strap match and they really worked this to feel like a grueling, hard fought battle. Austin loses but it still feels like he's coming out on top, away from DiBiase and on to something new.
  2. Damn Scott looks ridiculous here. The match is pretty fun; nice power match and they really throw out the moves. Screwy finish leading to another Hall angle. It's good stuff, really intriguing, and still selling the WWF invasion idea hard. Leaves a lot more questions than answers, which is a good thing here.
  3. Talk about an incongruity between the significance of the segment and its title on the DVD! Very well done production-wise. Hall is very in Razor character here and it definitely feels like they're selling the WWF invasion aspect of the angle.
  4. The crossbody over the top rope was pretty awesome. Another big Goldust angle. It really feels like the direction should be a build to a big time Goldust vs. Shawn Michaels match. It really books itself. Vader hasn't really come across as lighting the world on fire from what we see on the set after that incredible angle earlier in the year. Vince's reaction is hilarious.
  5. Pretty lame promo from Shawn pre-match. I don't think the pre-match angle helped get the crowd ready for this match after the situation is already weird from the power outage. Match was really dull. It's competently worked by athletic guys who execute their stuff well, but just nothing's going on. Double count screwy finish. This doesn't make me excited to see any more of this series.
  6. Entire match is basically the beginning of a longer Flair match, with Armstrong getting the best of Flair working around a headlock. It's really energetic and fun stuff, Armstrong's dropkicks look really good. Kind of a swerve ending; you totally expect Flair to cheat and hit him with the knuckles, but you don't expected him to be found out and DQ'd.
  7. Rock's first TV match! Pretty cool to see. Rock's wrestling definitely isn't impressive here. He does stand out physically, but nothing else gives him away as someone bound to become a major star. I mean, yeah, it's his first TV match. Nice promo to set it up with Lawler and Dundee talking about how their experience beats the younger guys' physiques any day in the ring. The match is decent.
  8. Now this I thought was a good shoot style match. Ramazi is the stronger man and hits a number of really cool throws and suplexes while Yammamoto wants to keep it on the ground and go for submissions. A brawl almost breaks out on the floor here too. Ending spot with the sleeper was cool.
  9. Nothing much of a match but that mini-riot at the end really was cool. Totally unexpected in the context and really chaotic for the little bit it lasted.
  10. No doubt this is a good match; as a solidly worked AJPW style main event, it's hard to objectively call it anything less than decidedly very good. But for Taue's only Triple Crown win, you'd have hoped for a more memorable match. I don't know if I'd call this a sprint, I didn't get a sense of a particularly faster or more frantic pace -- just a shorter main event style match without any real time spent working holds in the beginning. The ending was great though, teasing the nodawa several times and then having Taue catch Misawa out of nowhere for the shocking win.
  11. Watching these two AJPW matches back to back, no question, 90s AJPW is the best wrestling ever. No other style has come close to how AJPW is able to pull off the feel of a legit athletic competition while still operating squarely in the confines of a traditional pro wrestling style. This isn't one of the AJPW classics but man is it a great match. Loved the beginning with Kawada psyching Kobashi out, and hitting him with the boot when he came running in shortly after. I also got the feel from this match of a pissed off Kawada blowing off steam on Kobashi. The dueling submission bit toward the middle of the match was cool, and I liked how Kobashi working the sleeper was a sort of mini-theme in the match. Awesome ending.
  12. This is an old favorite that I haven't watched in forever. Actually, I knew there was another Misawa/Akiyama vs. Kawada/Taue match other than the RWTL finals that I especially liked, but I wasn't sure of the date. This is it! Akiyama truly is the star of this. He starts it off at a quick pace that never really lets up, hitting an exploder on Taue about a minute into the match. Akiyama is so on his game this match, getting the best of most of the exchanges and dishing out a lot of offense. For the first portion of the match it seems like everyone sustains some damage except him. Until Kawada and Taue finally get him alone. And it's an awesome spot when they do -- Akiyama suddenly finds himself just sandwiches right between Kawada and Taue and they go in for the kill; Misawa tries to save him but it's too late and he finds himself in the same situation. I loved Kawada and Taue working on Akiyama. He had such a hot run of offense punching above his weight class for a long while, but now he gets a sort of comeuppance. Akiyama worked a lot of awesome slap exchange in this match so when Taue finally has him down, he unloads from above with big slaps. Although this was Akiyama's match, Misawa is still the coach. He saves Akiyama at key moments and often seems to be directing traffic. Akiyama gets a big run of offense to pin Kawada, but it's after Misawa sets him up with a big German suplex, and even sort of directs him to follow up. Coming out of this match I really want to see an Akiyama/Kawada singles match.
  13. Agreed, for me it's the one match head and shoulders above everything else. I don't think much in terms of star ratings, though I do think it's worthwhile to consider what your "five star matches" would be in terms of a handful of matches that you think represent the absolute best of pro wrestling. Within that handful, 6/9/95 is a league above.
  14. Such a cool match. Mostly mat based match with some really cool stuff. I wish they worked those punch exchange more, because they were awesome when they did them. Lots of cool little things in this match. It's such a strange but awesome mash-up of mat work, traditional wrestling and comedy.
  15. Pretty dumb booking all around on this one.
  16. Fun power match with a good ending. Commentary is off-topic but amusing.
  17. Really cool to see this match up. They get a lot of time and have a damn good TV match and Eddy comes off looking great. Other than being a great wrestler, Eddy does feel a bit generic at this point, hasn't really found his personality or charisma yet. But he's getting over here. Post-match promo is awesome.
  18. I never enjoy PWG that much when I watch it, but I bet it's a lot of fun live.
  19. Dead crowd. DDP and Barbarian work a decent end of the match. Feels like a real out of nowhere push for DDP, interested to watch it develop.
  20. Fun segment. Cool to see Eddy working exchanges with Flair. Flair/Savage continues to be a very good program.
  21. I thought the match was pretty darn good. Helped that the downtime was mostly edited out of the video. The backdrop into the cage was a good spot. Good crowd-pleasing match with a lot of heat. Love the one guy going totally nuts for the Kliq.
  22. Fun stuff. Lawler says it's just business but embraces the heel role in the ring, but not too overtly. Good studio match too.
  23. Dress Up Wildfight! Yeah, I'm on the negative side for this match. I just couldn't get into it at all. There was a point where Ozaki started tossing Inoue around the ringside tied to the whip, and then back in the ring they had some good exchanges, but I quickly got lost again and was just waiting for it to end. Aside from Toyota/Kudo, which was blow away great, Joshi sure isn't doing it for me this year.
  24. Table spot looked good and they really got it over as a big deal. I agree there's been some good stuff this first half year of WCW TV, if you subtract Hulk Hogan.
  25. I thought this was an above average Pulp Fiction, helped by the fact that it wasn't very long. Taz cuts a pretty good promo.
