  1. Not nearly as silly as some of the recent Undertaker stuff we've seen on this and the 98 sets. Still a bit much but the ridiculousness doesn't quite stretch the confines of pro wrestling. A Corporation vs. Ministry angle sounds interesting in theory but I'm ambivalent about it for sure right now. This did feel like a big deal at least.
  2. Geez can Nash and Hogan fuck off for this one? Not exactly the kind of commentary you want for a match like this, very annoying and self-serving. This is worked about how you expect and it's pretty fun, definitely has a big match feel. Screwy ending is lame but what were the options? Can't have Goldberg lose and you can't have Flair pinned going into the PPV.
  3. Ha, JR was great here. This is supposed to be him turning heel? The crowd loved it. Imagine the pop if he did the same thing to Michael Cole today! I don't get it at all, the whole Vince/JR relationship. If Vince doesn't like JR so much why was JR the voice of the product during its biggest years, why didn't he fire him well before he did last year for any reason he wanted?

It's doubly hilarious that RAW pulls this terrible rating during "WWE week."
  5. This is a pretty awesome segment, though yeah the commercial is very poorly timed. Flair is great, Goldberg is great and the crowd is hot for it. Crazy to give away Flair/Goldberg on two hours notice but this is good wrestling TV. I love Flair going nuts at Goldberg just stands there as the calm badass.
  6. This is a trip, that's for sure. All of this is weird. Some amusing in its weirdess, like the Steiner/Buff vignette. Others TERRIBLE and pointless like the stuff with Torrie. I mean I have no idea at all what the Stiner/Buff thing was trying to be or why it existed but at least it was mildly amusing. The last segment is just long and super dumb. The Nash/Hogan commentary is pretty dumb too but at least "and his name is Buddy Landell" was pretty funny.
  7. Fun garbage match. I really do enjoy a good chaotic weapons. The Tenryu angle at the end was really cool with Tenryu dissing Onita.
  8. I stalled at 85 matches a couple months ago, gonna try and make the push for a top 100 in the last 2 weeks. How many are submitting lists?

I think three hours is a scapegoat. The problem is the booking is just bad. If the shows were well booked they could easily put on a consistently entertaining three hour show. They have the roster for it.

It is just unbelievable to me the combination of the facts that WWE is such a poorly run promotion and that it is implausible that they will have any real competition in the forseeable future.
  11. I love how Mae always seems to show a special anger toward Maclin, so we also get a nice racist old lady undertone to the character.

    General thoughts on 1998

I bought this over the summer and got busy so didn't get too far into it, but in anticipation of wanting to go through the 99 set chronologically I watched the last 3 disks of this set in order and got through it surprisingly fast, and enjoyed it quite a bit actually. Though a lot of that is more curiosity than those RAW and Nitro segments necessarily being good or anything, since I never actually watched this stuff as it aired.
  13. Now for the real match. I LOVED it. It's like a glimpse into the future to what the Liger/Kikuchi tags would hold, which is one of my all time favorite feuds. Juniors tag with lots of hate, dirty tactics and still bringing the workrate juniors style. This match was great from the very beginning and I loved every minute of it. Everyone in this tag is perfect. I've always loved Ohtani for the fact that he's the most generic looking guy you can imagine but he's SO emotive and expressive in the ring. There's this one great spot where he's hit with a big palm strike and you see him sit up and start looking around trying to figure out where he is like he's been totally knocked out of his wits. Also a great boot scrape spot and a great rope running spot that plays off a great Wagner rope running spot. These teams are really the perfect foils: Ohtani and Kanemoto as total assholes, just regular looking black-trunks juniors, vs. Liger and Wagner, two super charismatic masked legends. The end stretch is great, they really turn up the work but don't lose the edge that makes this match unique and special. The dive section is nice and I love the actual ending itself, perfect for the Kanemoto/Ohtani team. This match will do VERY well on my MOTY list.
  14. Downloading the real match now. Funny thing is it sounds like both matches share some spots, maybe playing off this match. At one point Ohtani is blocking a figure four from El Samurai and he calls in Kendo to help him out, and Kendo actually kicks his own parters arm away for Samurai to lock on the move. They also do a double team with Ohtani in the surfboard and Samurai coming off the top with an elbow. Also a cool spot where Ohtani is about to do his boot scrapes on Samurai but Kendo interrupts him to hit bootscrapes of his own, only for Ohtani to look at him cross and go super deep with his follow up scrapes.
  15. On my disk this is Liger & El Samurai vs. Ohtani & Kendo Ka Shin. Anyone else? Super fun match by the way, if not the MOTYC this sounds!
  16. This is basically Vader just killing Taue until he wins, and it's pretty cool.
  17. I really, really like Ogawa in this match. Brings a real unique element. We're so used to these big AJPW matches being super athletic spectacles with cutting edge offense and workrate to the nines, but here Ogawa is portrayed as clearly a step or two below everyone else physically and makes up for it with wits and quickness. I really like him going toe to toe with Akiyama and Kobashi in the beginning. Him and Misawa do some cool double team stuff too. Overall I like this match less than Loss, I think it could have been cut for time and compressed a bit. A lot of stuff in the middle, though perfectly solid, didn't really jump out to me as that great. It's several steps below the better 90s AJ tags in heat and direction. That said the work was always damn good to great, it's just not a super top tier MOTYC for me. Some stuff at the end was really great, I especially liked Akiyama catching Misawa off a double team whip to the corner attempt into an Exploder. Also I really liked him turning an Exploder attempt into a sort of face-smash thing before hitting one for real on Ogawa. There were a bunch of awesome little moments here, I especially liked one extended spot based around Misawa trying to hit a senton on Kobashi. This will register on my MOTY list but not in the top 10 or anything, which is a bit disappointing given Loss' praise and how much I liked Ogawa in the juniors title match had my expectations a bit too high.

    1999 MOTY List

    Updated for February.
  19. There were good things in this match but I just didn't care at all. The Cena/Rollins feud has been awful, I don't care a lick about either of them. Cena/Lesnar NUMBER FOUR is an awful indictment of WWE's booking. Reigns return was cool in itself but I'm not looking forward to the big Reigns push.
  20. I don't really know anything about this angle. Why did Onita have so much heat? This was cool though.
  21. You can't really lose with these Flair promos. I feel like normally I'd be over a feud that ended like the Hogan/Flair match at Superbrawl did but this actually has me game to see it extended to the rematch. I like Flair talking about how they're gonna give the fans something they haven't seen in years and "load it up" -- hard to really know what he means but I kind of take it as a shot against the over produced glitz of 99 wrestling and saying he's gonna take it back to two guys beating the hell out of each other. Either way it's cool.
  22. I really enjoy Vince just not giving a fuck here. The "what about the children" moral panic here actually makes Vince look sympathetic and Vince's deflection to Bill Clinton is so cheap that it's great. This whole thing also makes WCW look so distinctly #2.
  23. I'm not sure of the rationale behind this angle but Mae Young makes this whole thing great. The purpose and direction of all this is still perplexing to me but it's plenty entertaining. Mae Young is hilarious here from the moment she comes out.
  24. These Hayes promos are really fun and make me want to see some full matches of this feud.
  25. I don't think this was much better than the previous tag (which I really, really liked) but it might edge it thanks to the last fall. I like how in the first two falls they for the most part tried to keep in clear, being a title match, but would show fire througout with big chop exchanges etc. Bestia's senton to end the second fall looked really good too. Then they go all out for the third fall with the rudos laying a beating on Casas and Santo to start off. I liked how desperate Casas seemed when Bestia first started to go for the leg. Santo wiping out Casas with the tope looked really great and I liked the ending stretch with them going down to one on one. Scorpio interfering to wobbled the ropes felt really dirty and was of course promptly upstaged by the interference to hit the match winning foule. The post-match is INCREDIBLE. The fans are incensed and throw trash into the ring and directly at Bestia and Scoprio. The commentators also seem to have strong words for them. Casas challenges them to a mask/hair vs. mask/hair match and I'm ready for that one.
