Wow, I really liked this match. A lot more than I was expecting -- I know about the rep of this matchup from time time but somehow had it in my head that it wouldn't hold up. But I thought it was great. There are definitely some moments where their lack of polish/experience as performers comes through but they aren't enough to detract from what is a really awesome traditional style tag match. Really liked the face offense in the beginning, especially the monkey flip and drop toe hold spot. The FIP was good with Jeff taking some big bumps and mounting two good comeback tease spots. The transition to the hot tag was really just perfect, Helms got some crazy air on that dive. Speaking of dives, Jeff's flip off the top to the outside was a real holy shit spot for me. Looked like he was gonna come down right on his head. Simple but very effective with some great big spots thrown in and going the perfect length. Hell, for tag matches I think I enjoyed this more than that Hildebrand show tag. If their 99 match really is significantly better I sure can't wait to see it. This match made me think how much a shame it is that the Hardys don't have more great, traditional style tag matches they do. Getting into the WWE when they did made them big stars and tons of money but you definitely feel the opportunity for a better body of tag work was lost there. They have these matches, the MNM match from 2007, the Briscos match from this year ... how much else? They should have dozens more classic tag matches than they do.

Goldberg. Should've evolved into a much better wrestler than he did with the natural talent, charisma and presence he had. Should've had much better programs and big matches.

For multiple segment one night angles, this is billions of times better than that Undertaker/Austin shit. Fun enough stuff, Henry convincing D-Lo to come along only to reveal that he's going to be the limo driver was funny. So was Henry denying it was D-Lo when she recognized him.

The grammar on all those signs. If there were as many signs today as then, would the grammar and spelling still be as bad? You'd think that a product team would try to find a properly spelled sign if they're going to zoom in on it.

[1998-11-30-WCW-Nitro] Contract Signing: Goldberg vs Kevin Nash
tim replied to Loss's topic in November 1998
How is Nash supposed to be taken seriously? I guess he got over as "cool" with all the 12-14 year olds watching during this era.- 5 replies

I'm surprised I've never heard of this match before. Featuring maybe the top 4 indy darlings of the era in a year with a distinct lack of 'workrate' matches and being as good as it is, you think this would've quickly got a reputation among tape traders that lasted quite a while. Really good match with a strong and well worked heel/face dynamic. Really like after Benoit's first hot tag in how he's slamming Eddy and following it up with big chops. Eddy and Jericho work well as a heel team and the FIP is really good. I love the sequence during Benoit's FIP that leads to Malenko coming off the top rope to assist a sunset flip. Nice ending stretch leading to a really great ending.

[1998-11-27-ECW-TV] Taz & Shane Douglas vs Sabu & Rob Van Dam
tim replied to Loss's topic in November 1998
The "controversy" at the end is pretty silly. Turning a choke into a suplex is a reprehensible act of negligence and brutality ... in the same match where Sabu came off the top rope and smashed Shane Douglas' head between two steel chairs. I dunno about this. Agreed that RVD having to be held back from Taz makes the idea of a RVD/Taz match with RVD trying to get revenge a lot more interesting than whatever this seems to be leading to.- 5 replies

Whoops, I meant looking at WCW PPV listings. Looking at the actual 1999 yearbook listing, it seems it wasn't even good or relevant enough to be included. How disappointing.

Awful, awful, awful. Dumb, boring, long, not interesting at all ... WWE excess at its worst. The level of bad where it's legitimately unbelieveable that it even happened. In a series of segments this bad it should be hard to pick out what the absolute worst part was ... but here, the award goes to Undertaker speaking in tongues.

For about two minutes you can't get much better than this. It's as smiple as can be but effective. Goldberg kicks out of the chokeslam, makes a quick comeback and puts the Giant away with the spear and jackhammer to a huge pop. I don't know that any 1998 Goldberg/Giant match could have been any better than what they did in two minutes right here. The dynamic they have going on with Goldberg, Nash and Bigelow is interesting. It's something that could continue to be intriguing with a cool pay-off in the right booker's hands or break down into disappointing nonsense in the wrong booker's hands. Well, I'm not really too familiar with WCW of this era other than the big events everyone knows about, so we'll see which it is!

[1998-11-16-WWF-Raw] The Rock, Vince McMahon and Shane McMahon
tim replied to Loss's topic in November 1998
Great segment. One of the best of the Attitude Era I've seen. The heat is deafening, the promo work is good and it sets up a super hot main event to end the night. Definitely a snapshot of this era at its best. -
Man the action is dull as dishwater here. Between Royal Rumbles and TV battle royales WWE has done a pretty good job the last several years of making battle royales fun to watch at the very least once the last dozen or so guys are in the ring. This was just nothing, work-wise. The Bigelow interference was cool. Looking at the match listings I can't believe that a legit Goldberg/Bigelow match didn't happen, watching some of the build up. It's an exciting match up that the crowd was into and could've been a good match. edit: Looking at the 99 listing, looks like Goldberg/Bigelow happens in February. We'll see if the feud is still hot by then after the loss to Nash.

Fun match. Nothing to blow your socks off but a nice workrate cruiserweight affair. I liked Rey's weird facebuster off the code red set up here.

Better than you might expect, a decently enjoyable hoss fight. I like the booking of having Nash go over a lesser streak building up to the Goldberg match. I wasn't watching at this time so I'm not sure of the background, but I wonder if Wrath's streak was earmarked for being broken by a guy building to a Goldberg match some time in advance, or if it were even designed for that in the first place. Or if they just winged it and decided Nash would end it on short notice.

The US Title is now by far the most meaningful title regularly on TV.

This should be a Wrestlemania main event!

For all the reasons someone might not like joshi, and it's fair enough to not like it and not want to rank any joshi wrestlers, I don't know if a lack of athleticism and physicality is reasonably one of them.

Rusev/Sheamus post-RAW single handedly made me excited for this show.

Man, I loved that spot. In fact, I specifically remember the RAW where the Khali feud was first introduced and they brawled on the entrance ramp and Cena caught the chop and tried to transition it into an FU. At that moment I knew that the night after Judgment Day I would soon be accused of trolling because I was sure the match would end up being good and I'd praise it. Sure enough I was right, I loved that match.

For a while my operating assumption was that Austin won't be on my list but after watching some Attitude Era stuff, even though he's physically limited he brings such excitement and character to the things he does that, in light of that combined with his post-comeback work and WCW stuff, he has a strong shot of being on now. I might leave Bret Hart off. And Shawn.

I was just thinking, with the overall staleness of the wrestling landscape, would the time be right for a more ECW-like indie with an emphasis on angles and characters over workrate to get over big?
