Impressive performance for a referee. This NWO story is nailing just about everything right, including the sense of the NWO's creeping control over more and more of WCW. They draw it out enough and, even though it's obvious what's going on, it's not so explicit so that there's still a sense of suspense.

[1996-09-09-WCW-Nitro] Interview: Lex Luger, Ric Flair & Arn Anderson
tim replied to Loss's topic in September 1996
They're really building this to feel like a monumental match. I've never seen it and am aware opinions diverge, so I'm looking forward to it. Good dissention-in-the-ranks story that gets played out all night.- 7 replies

[1996-09-07-USWA-TV] Wolfie D and Bill Dundee feud recap
tim replied to Loss's topic in September 1996
Good recap of a really well done big, long-term story. -
The grappling was really uninteresting but the standup at the end with Bas going for the kill was cool.

[1996-09-05-AJPW-Summer Action Series II] Stan Hansen vs Kenta Kobashi
tim replied to Loss's topic in September 1996
Man this ruled. Kobashi very much works Hansen's match and it's a violent, messy slugfest in the best way. Before the match they're already staring each other down and ready to go, and they get right into it from the sound of the bell. They just beat on each other the whole match, so many awesome strikes. I especially loved Kobashi working Hansen over with body shots at one point. Lots of particularly cool spots like a really impressive delayed suplex from Kobashi and Hansens totally awesome shoulder block/sort-of-tope through the bottom ropes. The selling is great and very appropriate, as it goes on you really get that great war of attrition feel. Kobashi is pretty firmly in control once Hansen misses the lariat and slams into the ring post letting Kobashi work his arm over, but he still has a lot of fight in him and it takes a lot to finish him off. I do think this went a tad long toward the end but it's definitely a top notch MOTYC.- 19 replies

I think this is only JUST below the very best matches of the year. These two teams knock it out of the park again. Great action packed match with lots of big moves, really felt like a top level title fight. Didn't quite have the drama and story of their June match but the work was still phenomenal. The Akiyama/Ace opening was indeed awesome, and Misawa and Williams follow it up well too with a really cool exchange building around grinding each others heads. Everyone looks good here, Doc is particularly impressive, Ace puts in a good performance including a really cool Ace Crusher over the ropes. Even though they lose, Akiyama and Misawa seem to be becoming more of an equal pairing -- Akiyama looks like less of the "junior partner" of the team throughout even though he takes the fall.

I thought this was just a blow-away awesome segment, maybe the best show-ending segment in wrestling history. Man that post-match angle was just insane, executed perfectly with such an awesome sense of chaos. The NWO was so great at the booth, especially Hogan. The match itself was pretty damn good too, especially Flair's run of low blows and his hot tag to end the match. And man, Mongo was another level of bad here. Giant feels like the perfect guy to turn to me. His size adds to the menacing aspect of the NWO. The bigness of the Giant reinforces the bigness of the angle in a way. I don't even think his promo was all bad -- it gets rambling, but he gets his point across, you understand why he turned and the draw the NWO has to any given WCW star.

I found this a pretty damn impressive match. Often when you have a barbed wire rope match, especially tag team it seems, the confines of the ring without even being able to run the ropes gives the match a really confined feeling and it sort of breaks down into a bad kind of disorganization. But they really used the gimmick here to work the match around a well-executed story. The first deathmatch spot was really well done, came out of nowhere. Tanaka and Kuroda are left alone to fight 2 vs. 3 and mostly are beaten down, though there is one good comeback tease. Kuroda sacrifices himself to take out one of the feels and Koji comes makes a big comeback to lead to the win, with a really good last minute or two pulling the trigger on some big explosion spots. I thought this was a really well worked match for its gimmick and the perfect length.

When Austin challenges Bret I really had a "hell yeah, this is the feud I want to see right now" moment. This program just seems so cool right now. Bret returning and taking on Austin who is on a huge upswing and really is starting to feel like a mega star. So much charisma and a really compelling personality.

Yikes what the hell is Wolfie wearing? Decent promo from Wolfie, and a fun short match. Pretty action packed for what it is.

Man what an incredible home stretch this had. The rest of the match was good, especially Inoue really taking it to Aja in the beginning and Aja's furious comeback. But everything from Aja's tope on was just on another level. This match had a big match feel all throughout but the end really emphasized it. Just big move after big move, not too fast, not too fancy, just felt like the two strongest wrestlers hitting their bombs and both barely surviving. And those kickouts were masterful, you don't see 2.999 style kickouts done that well very often. The crowd really comes unglued at the end too. This was awesome and Aja is clearly the best woman wrestler of the year.

[1996-08-24-ECW-Natural Born Killaz] Rob Van Dam vs Doug Furnas
tim replied to Loss's topic in August 1996
I love love love this match. Even as is it's going pretty high on my MOTY list, without that brawl through the crowd where mostly nothing happened, it would probably go preposterously high. This is RVD's best match ever, and more than that this is the best RVD's ever looked as a wrestler. Here his offense doesn't come across as showy and contrived, but as violent unorthodox offense; really in this match he feels like a more athletic, precise, and better Sabu. Furnas is awesome here with his nasty power moves with some hardcore stuff incorporated very well. He could've done awesome things in the ECW setting I imagine. There's awesome spots happening every minute of this match, and the Van Daminator to finish came across as a legit devastating, opportunistic blow. I'm surprised the consensus is so low on this one.- 10 replies

[1996-08-24-RINGS-Maelstrom] Volk Han vs Tsuyoshi Kohsaka
tim replied to Loss's topic in August 1996
Great RINGS match with some really, really awesome submissions. Volk Han especially brings it -- a traditional arm wrench in a shoot style match! He briefly attempts this one crazy submission where he tries to bull Kohsaka's arm between his legs while holding down his ankles. Wish he got a chance to really lock it in. All the big submission high spots really hit with the crowd and looked great. -
[1996-08-19-WCW-Nitro] Sting & Lex Luger vs Ric Flair & Arn Anderson
tim replied to Loss's topic in August 1996
Outstanding segment, for all the great WCW segments recently this one is right up there. Arn's promo was just amazing, and the close-ups on Flair's face were great, he looks skeptical, he doesn't *like* the idea, but you can see he knows it's the right call. Both Sting and Luger held up their end on the promos too. This really feels like a huge alliance and has me looking forward to War Games.- 9 replies

Really good quick TV match. Simple but very well executed action. Dean really is great in these quick TV matches as opposed to longer technical classic type matches.

Too cheesy for the direction the product is starting to head in.

Easy to see why the over the top lovefest turned a lot of people off of Shawn over time during this reign. I love how one of Vince's favorite adjectives to talk up Shawn is "flamboyant."

Really good segment, and the Undertaker schtick is really starting to have an edge to it to keep up with the feel of the WCW product. The more edgy than cartoonish outlandish character of Mankind helps. The flickering of the lights worked really well and Bearer was great getting increasingly nervous. Probably would have been good to keep Undertaker out for a while though, let Mankind focus on the Shawn program and then return with more impact.

Ugh, the restarts were so bad. Really awkward and disrupted the flow of the match. Just delete those restarts and have them work the match the way they did and it would have been damn good. Still was really, but the restarts took a good bit away from it. What really struck me in this match is how much better Michaels looked -- not only was the match worked in a way that made him look better, but he looked like the better wrestler to me. Vader's extended time on offense was too "methodical," and in general he never really came across as the killer Vader he should have been, though the counter to the headsissors was great. Shawn's opening offense was really good and aggressive; Shawn's offense in general was really good in this match, he had some damn good punches and his rope-running flying forearm was a great spot. Good ending too. Very good match overall, marred notably by the restarts. Michaels was very impressive, Vader a bit disappointing.

[1996-08-18-WWF-Summerslam] The Undertaker vs Mankind (Boiler Room Brawl)
tim replied to Loss's topic in August 1996
Normally when WWE/WWF do these long, multi-step out of ringside area gimmicks it's incredibly lame and overproduced, but this was very good and not overproduced at all. For a WWF prop brawl it actually felt violent. Foley's big bump off the ladder was brutal and in general the whole thing came across as these two doing serious damage to each other. This was definitely a star-making feud for Foley.- 17 replies

This match was such a blast. Liger was awesome and the crowd loved him. Really, really good MPro style match with a super hot crowd, a great heel/face dynamic, a big dive section and Liger feeling like a super star. This was great.

[1996-08-17-AAA] Rey Misterio Jr & Konnan vs Juventud Guerrera & Jerry Estrada
tim replied to Loss's topic in August 1996
This was a fun match, never dragged and had some cool stuff. Konan is clearly bad, but didn't take away from the match at all. Some cool double-team doomsday device spots and the highlight of the match for me was Juventud's ridiculous exaggerated bump off a hurricanrana. Easy to watch, which hasn't been the case for all AAA this year. -
[1996-08-17-UWFi-Mid-Summer in Jingu] Genichiro Tenryu vs Naoki Sano
tim replied to Loss's topic in August 1996
Really sparse stadium but I thought it was still a cool atmosphere. The match is definitely good and has some cool stuff, but it felt stylistically awkward and never really came together. Still, a fun watch and short.
