Mankind being the number 1 contender coming out of Wrestlemania is really strange considering he hardly did anything of note since Survivor Series.
-
This was a typical case of Lawler not being told what was about to happen as he basically tried to sell Bulldog as the the face (by running him down and at the same time trying to be sympatetic towards Owen).

The inconsistent censoring was a bit strange (at least to a European). "asskicking" is okay but "kiss my ass" is not?

[1997-03-17-WCW-Nitro] Rick & Scott Steiner vs Harlem Heat
Robert S replied to Loss's topic in March 1997
"He pointed at me." They basically already sold the Starrcade main event with that segment, 9 months before the event. Maybe this feud peeked too early. -
The way Gertner announces the Dudleys as "tag team champions of the world" sounds almost exactly as Road Dogg doing so for the NAO. Probably a coincidence, but still funny.

[1997-03-23-WWF-Wrestlemania XIII] Bret Hart vs Steve Austin (I Quit)
Robert S replied to Loss's topic in March 1997
When Wrestlemania XIII aired on German TV they cut out the finish of this match. When Bret was applying the Sharpshooter they went immediately to Shamrock pulling Bret off of Austin. After the German TV regulation board almost kicked off WWF from TV for good (it eventually was pushed into a late night spot after they tried airing it on Sunday afternoon for two or three weeks) in late 95 I guess WWF (I think they edited the footage themselves) was extra careful what to show and what not. -
[1997-03-10-WWF-Raw] Ken Shamrock, Steve Austin and Bret Hart

Shamrock stumbles over some lines but this is worlds better than his first few lines on the ECW invasion show. Clearly someone has coaching him (and feeding him lines) after he died that horrible death with Lawler. -
[1997-03-10-WWF-Raw] Jerry Lawler and Paul Heyman: The Great Debate
Robert S replied to Loss's topic in March 1997
This was almost hard to watch due to how low this gets. Heyman was at least to some degree playing a chracter while Lawler, I think, just did a 95% shoot promo about his feelings regarding ECW and Vince giving them time on Raw to promote themselves. -
I think this segment might have actually worked if they used the right guys. If they replaced the horrible kickboxer for example by Meng (not that he was doing much with the Faces of Fear at that point) and used some known face instead of the boxer (is that Brady Boone?), Hacksaw might have worked (though I really would have loved to see Fujiwara in this trying to get over in that 3-5 minutes he would have gotten), I think. Of course with the plan being that the guys were to be replaced anyway it made no sense to use non-jobbers for this.

The ref here counts pin-attempts much more like a US or Japanese ref than the usual Lucha refs do and therefore (I guess) I was pretty into the final fall here.

[1997-02-28-BattlARTS] Yuki Ishikawa vs Alexander Otsuka

Did they have the crowd on the side the hard-camera was posted? -
Hard to understand what Foley is trying to say. I think it went something like this: "Sid, you are looking for the Undertaker, but tonight here in Germany you have to find me first. I am not human, I am a ghost and tonight the belt is mine, all mine. Have a nice day." I think the reason for this promo being in German is that the whole show (incl. the Shotgun undercard aired as a whole in Germany (I don't think it was live, but it aired before Monday) and I guess they were too lazy to do some editing.

[1997-02-23-WCW-Superbrawl VII] Dean Malenko vs Syxx

Pretty bad finish as there was no way that Mark Curtis could have missed the (accidental, I guess) belt shot the way this was set up. -
[1997-02-24-WWF-Raw] Jerry Lawler and Ken Shamrock
Robert S replied to Loss's topic in February 1997
Shamrock was really horrible here "I don't know you." "Who are you?" (repeat 5 times) -
Amazingly that was not the biggest lie of this promo (see soup23).

The CM Punk version of this promo six years later was so much better than this.

Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 3

That sounds pretty scary. -
Kanemaru is not a guy that is very popular in the "IWC", to say the least.

Wasn't Shamrock close to Bret? I think Shamrock trained with Bret in early 97.

Thanks, fixed. Mutoh vs. Tenryu (6/8/01) is wrong as well.

Financially I guess it wasn't: It drew the second lowest buyrate of the year (Slamboree was a bit lower) and one of the lowest in WCW history. I remember the whole thing just beeing so uneven: on the one hand you had the really different feel of the show (production wise etc.), on the other hand there were these endless Miss nWo segments, a pretty bad show wrestling wise and a bad crowd. The WCW guys getting screwed was almost comical, but I guess that was the whole premise of the show. It might have been better if they did a nWo Clash of the Champions followed by a normal WCW PPV instead of the other way around like they did.
