[1996-03-31-WWF-Wrestlemania XII] Ultimate Warrior vs Hunter Hearst Helmsley
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1996
Yeah, I remember ordering the ppv and being like wtf, I just fig it would make the yearbook proper as the feud of the year so far. -
Beautiful read Kris , I sent it to my friend that grew up in Zacatecas and she said you captured the spirit perfectly.

Watched this in full on the network and It was a ton of fun. Luger being dominated puts over the Giant as menacing. The spot to build to him getting knocked off the apron was well done. The table bump looked nasty with Luger's head bouncing off of it and him selling it like death. Flair running scared and Sting helping his friend provides a lot of good layered storytelling going on right now with Giant looking like a monster. I think the first half of WCW in 96 is better than it usually gets credit for so far besides the Hogan/DOD stuff.

Lawler gets some funny lines in with Hunter's girl. Hunter looked decent to me here. He gets a lot from the champion that helps and is limited on his stuff but he does have the character beats down and keeps the crowd engaged which is all I would ask from him at this point in his career. The Perfect angle felt odd and they blew through three commercials for this match which felt excessive. A good title match vs. a heel up and comer. ***

The WWF symbol in the Kuwait flag gets me. This was fun stuff with Davey Boy's bathing suit being the highlight.

Agree that these two are a nice point/counterpoint with one another but Goldust making overtures at faces feels stale by this point and there was so much more dimension and interesting aspects they could have done with his character than this. The attack by Mankind and subsequent sit up by Taker was well done.

I understand these matches got over but man, this series of three long ECW matches in a row can drive down a disc and take up a ton of real estate. Especially when this was the worst of the three by a wide margin and everything that was tried here was done better in Scorp/Douglas. In addition, my thoughts for this match again makes the ending feel really hollow with Paul E putting these guys and the match over as some classic and Fonzie and RVD linking up. **

Nice sentiment with Douglas actually caring about the TV belt based how the match was worked and I understand the escalation aspect of using weapons, brawling and table to get stuff over but I really dug the beginning with the chain and counter wrestling and it took me a while to get going once they went away from that. I also appreciate that the time limit draw is a nice tease given past history but this match still felt too long and while these signature Scorpio matches are good, I always feel like they need an editor which does reflect ever so negatively on him as a performer in my eyes. Little things like that are the barometer for him making my GWE list or not. The Douglas promo at the end again was overwrought and unnecessary. ***3/4

While Natrual Born Killaz was blaring over the PA, I was thinking this was going to be a treat and one of the better ECW brawl, clusterfuck matches in history. Even the first sprawling brawl culminating in the Eagles Nest spot was fine, then the match went 10 MORE MINUTES. We get a bevy of run ins and Beulah and Kimona escort Stevie out by his balls. Still was a fun a watch but this did have a slight potential to be really good and instead it got in its on way and became overly bloated. ***

Oh boy the start of these, I can't believe this angle predated the NWO.

Liger brought out his black suit for this appearance. This was better than the Nitro debut match. Flair is doing a weird gimmick now where he is eating in a fine area with nice table settings while the match is going on. Malenko and Liger mesh well together but never had a classic match against each other. This really didn't have the time to be that but felt more energetic and inspired compared to their previous efforts. **1/2

I didn't think about Elizabeth either watching the segment. The stuff with Davey Boy and DIana was fine to provide a distraction for Shawn going into a big match but having other accusations feels hokey and strange.

I don't really understand the location aspect of this. The first video showed Page in what looked like downtown Atlanta but now he is haggling rodeo tickets which makes no sense.

Pogo was the worst here but this was a damn good match too and overall this may be FMW strongest card with three different, distinct death matches on top and it is amazing to think that Onita wasn't a participate in any of these matches although he was critical to getting over Kudo vs. Toyodo and this match. This had some great visuals mixed in and Hayabusa took some hellacious damage. I loved his spot of him flying over the ring and the exploding pit. The spinning toe hold spot mentioned above was also memorable. A great capper to a great card. ****

A beautiful, brutal match. I have watched an inordinate amount of wrestling the past week (something in the neighborhood of 40 hours) and this was the best match out of all of those. The set up to the spots was great and drawn out in a way to really add tension to the inevitable bumps. Once those started coming, this match became more visceral and violent with some cringe worthy moments most of all the German into the exploding wire for me. Combat really portrayed her entire career with justice here and did a wonderful job saving her best for last. ONita in the post match Is tragic and endearing all at once. This is a match with a gambit of emotions running through your mind while watching, but it all blends into a great pro wrestling classic. ****3/4

This was a great match and a critical one to keep things fresh. The shorter time helped it as well as the monster work from Vader. Vader dominated a lot here and seemed to fend off most of Misawa's offense as he had run through all the big guns. However, Misawa is still the man and the Elbow is still his weapon of choice. I think when I watched this for the first time, I didn't understand that psychology of how effective the elbow was throughout the decade, but now it makes perfect sense and this seemed appropriate and definitive at ending a big Dome show paying tribute to the native founder of the company. Excellent match. ****

Classy tribute with some big gaijin names making the trip. I again love the hierarchy the All Japan roster has when it comes to lining up to pay respect The image of Mokota in the dugout with Baba's boots was a lasting one.

This was predictable stuff with Corino and Taz but well done and effective. I hated the Candido stuff especially Styles yelling that we all fell for it when by this point, if you really thought Candido was injured, you were a complete dumb ass. Taz seems a bit directionless at the moment without a great challenger for the title.

[1999-04-30-ECW-Fort Lauderdale, FL] Yoshihiro Taijiri vs Little Guido
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in April 1999
Fun atmosphere and a really good match that could have been great with a few more minutes to flesh things out. I really loved the mat work here and the submission attempts as it gave the overall match a rugged vibe that worked well within the confines of Tajiri being split open. HIs comeback spots were timed well and the Tarantulas was used effectively. Sal losing his mind on the nearfalls was a nice touch too. A really good undercard match to make a house show worth going to and the overall show more memorable. ***1/2 -
[1999-04-29-WWF-Smackdown] Steve Austin & The Rock vs HHH & The Undertaker
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in April 1999
I noticed that Test didn't participate in the beatdown of Rock so I guess that signified his face turn. The Union seemed ill conceived and way too quick for that group. This match was fun and a cool change of pace seeing Rock and Austin tag even though they aren't best buddies. That chairshot was alarming with how sick it was. The finish was crap but the overall action was good and hot for the ten minutes the match lasted. I will also say that HHH did look like he could hang here. **1/2 -
[1999-04-26-WWF-Raw] The Undertaker, Stephanie McMahon and Steve Austin
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in April 1999
This did hold up better as an overall payoff than I imagined and I'm starting to think the reason I soured so much on this angle overall was how lame the Higher Power payoff was just as a reset. Here, we get creepy Taker wanting to go screw Vince by having an unholy wedding with Steph. We get Shamrock and Big Show trying to make the save before Austin finally does. The way Austin reacts to the hug is great and remains true to his character. Vince saying thank you to him is another powerful moment. -
Good job of turning someone babyface when he was already getting cheers but still predominately a heel. Rock has too much charisma and catchphrases to really be a heel by this point. Him going against Shane could at times feel like Vince vs. Austin Part 2 which is something I want to track and hope isnt the case. The crowd was excited to be cheering for the guy without feeling guilty.
