I liked this a good deal as a death match gore match, it built well and I liked the multiple use of the weapon pits as so many times in these matches they build to this dangerous weapon spot, hit it and then just move on. Here you had multiple bumps and dives into the weapons around the ring before things settled down with the barbed wire in the ring. Felt like a good war of a match that still showed some restraint. ***1/4

MIssy again looks really sugically helped here. Fonzie rambles about something and I really don't care about the ECW tag division at this point.

I am alone in liking this better than the first match. I thought this did a good job of showing Flair's mastermind plans from the first four months of the year crumble when he combines cockiness and not having something to counteract the shear power of the Giant. Him not going for the pinfall was a mistake after the foreign object shot, but it plays into his character. Also, Mongo shockingly brings up a smart point of the chokeslam took everyone by surprise not allowing the ladies enough time to interfere. Big push for Giant starts here with him winning the title in pretty shocking fashion. ***

[1996-04-29-WCW-Nitro] Steven Regal vs Fit Finlay (Parking Lot Brawl)
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in April 1996
Agree with PEte that this effect made this night feel really big for both shows which wasn't always the case early on in the MNW. This brawl was great while it lasted with hate, stiff shots, and using the cars as weapons. The finish was built to well and it felt like a conclusive blowoff to a fine feud. ***1/2- 12 replies

[1996-04-29-WWF-Raw] Shawn Michaels, Jim Cornette and Davey Boy & Diana Smith
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in April 1996
Shawn has actually been a better face than I would have thought up to this point. Playing some edge at times but not being a dick with it. Here his don't flatter yourself line was perfect given the setup. Cornette's promo is something else with Vince looking like he is ready to defend his man's honor. "I KNOW YOU WANT ME" never fails to not crack me up. Angle worked for me and I look forward to the matches. -
This did look like an ECW segment. The video guy was annoying and a complete shill. I don't know how filming a homeless guy on the street shows he has great directing credentials.

PIper has needed to buzz off for a while now and the crowd sending him that message directly with boos worked for me. Flair is a ridi in this and amped to a ten. I don't think this was a good use of him at all but damn if it wasn't memorable and he embraced the role presented. Arn also does his part by fainting in the corner at the Kevin Nash match. This feels like everything good and bad with WCW right now rolled into one segment.

I adore this match. It goes long but keeps the action going and has a ton of crazy dives and spots from all four guys involved. It feels like a mesh of people but it works. IN some respects this broke down into a tag formula, but I liked the spot where Blitz and Rey hit dives to the outside then started brawling back inside the ring to give the match an edge. Psicosis winning at this point felt like an upset and he has been sort of an afterthought on this yearbooks the past few years so it was nice to see him get a chance to shine here. This was right when I was giving WCW my last big chance of investment into the company even though I could sense things slipping away, matches like this is what made me stick it out for longer than I probably should have. ****

Agree with everyone here that this was a great 10 minute stretch of a match and a breath of fresh air for WCWSN. Arn continues to be pretty great on the outside and I also dig Hudson's commentary. Both of these teams work well and compliment each other. The finish was shoddy but the match was a blast. ***1/2

I need a shower after watching all of this. KAW having midgets is one of the least surprising developments of 1999. Fun seeing the Rogers cameo but not much else resonated with me.

[1999-04-17-MPPW-TV] Jerry Lawler vs Derrick King & Kid Wikkid (Handicap)
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in April 1999
Derrick King! He cuts a promo here and forces the King to work alone. Man, Dundee must have had some sort of transportation problems. Anyway, not much of a match but Lawler wins the tag belts. * -
[1999-04-17-MPPW-TV] Stan Lane promo / Stacy promo / Interview: Jerry Lawler
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in April 1999
Stacy tries to interfere and gets a spanking as a result. Stan Lane calls in for a promo while announcing and puts over the cage match. I liked this Lawler promo in the ring and again think it is clever how their is always a sense of underlying tension between Lawler and DUndee as partners given their past history. -
Hayes is still hanging out and now is the champ. Really interesting that he has been inserted in the top end of things in Memphis along with what Lawler has going on. Still find these promos from PS to be a complete blast.

[1999-04-16-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Vader vs Kenta Kobashi
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in April 1999
This match does carry some restraint and is probably the worst final since 93 but I still thought it passed the great match parameter and was again refreshing to see and to throw up in the face of All Japan late 90's was all head dropping and kick outs narrative. Vader was methodical in his actions here but everything carried impact and it allowed Kobashi to mount his comebacks at points to a great reaction. The comeback that started with the powerslam off of the middle rope dive followed by the German and moonsault was dramatic and gave Vader a solid kickout with him avoiding the Burning Lariat. He gets a German of his own to even things back up. Vader busts out a huge moonsault of his own that I marked out for and Kobashi is barely able to kick out. Vader Bomb gets another close nearfall and tall and Vader just bum rushed Kobashi and tackles him for the Carny victory in just under 20 minutes. A different feeling big match in All Japan. ****- 8 replies

DDP is still a face then? What is going on with this mess. Roddy is on color because why the fuck not. Steiner sends Page into the exposed turnbuckle back first before Page mounts a comeback and wins the feud. Not a bad way to get Page over but Steiner had some momentum too and DDP as a pseudo face/heel is confusing right now.

This was better but still had some weird effects. This also just went to remind me how much of a loaded roster WCW still had and that they couldn't put anything together well.

Overproduced and devoid of emotion. Song didn't really fit the theme of Steiner at this point.

This was right at the edge of being ridiculous but I ended up enjoying it. One for the callback aspect and two for the Rock and Austin actually having some new issue against each other from Mania besides the fact that they just fought.

I liked the first commercial better than this one.

Good god the IC belt is being passed around like a hot potato. Even though the credibility of the IC belt could be questioned before this, this is an easy bookmark in the title lineage to point to where it really became a mid card thing.

[1999-04-11-WCW-Spring Stampede] Ric Flair vs Hulk Hogan vs Sting vs DDP
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in April 1999
Hogan leaving was odd considering how much of a focus he had been so far this year. Anyway, the ending action here was fun but Savage hitting the elbow on Flair seemed like an old rivalry cropping up that I was good without seeing. I remember being shocked DDP got the win here but glad to see his hard work pay off.- 6 replies

[1999-04-11-WCW-Spring Stampede] Goldberg vs Kevin Nash
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in April 1999
This action looked really hot and Goldberg still feels like the biggest guy in the promotion here. He avenges his lost and Nash's booking is really interesting to analyze as you can see him using this job as leverage that he is giving.- 5 replies

[1999-04-11-WCW-Spring Stampede] Booker T vs Scott Steiner
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in April 1999
Nice match of two guys that felt like they were waiting in the wings to become main eventers. This may have been the worst example of people turning to the entranceway. Booker hits his spinning kick with the referee still down. Scott busts out the top rope Frankensteiner and he gets a nearfall counting the referee hand. A foreign object wins the title for Scott. Solid action from the finishing run.- 4 replies
