  1. I liked this segment overall but the feud was destined to be lackluster with the announced stip and them having to play up this ultimate respect thing. Piper knows how to sell face vs. face as we saw at Mania 8 and he interjects well here.
  2. These are working from a creep level and feel extremely different when backdropped against some of the other WWF produced stuff from the year so far.
  3. A high-octane video announcing the Warriors return which suits him.
  4. Sunny being pushed on sex appeal now.
  5. Now we are talking as this was a straight brawl. Takayama and Hashimoto would deliver but I was deeply impressed with the angst shown by Hirata and especially Anjo. He went toe to toe with Hashimoto and felt like he belonged. New Japan as a promotion for the 1990's really excelled in inter-promotional feuds and this match displays that thought wonderfully. ****1/4
  6. I thought this was good, but not entirely fond of it. The action felt pretty inconsequential and mundane which was accelerated by the dead crowd. The Tiger vs. Liger match felt like the baseline for those guys and this felt like the multi-man equivalent. ***1/4
  7. Ok, I just posted in 1993 that Lawler vs. Savage was one of the best USWA segments of the 90's. This is up there too. Dundee and Wolfie have legit beef with each other and that comes across in spades. I loved the shooty aspects of this with it being stated that the viewers need to read Meltzer to get the entire scoop. Gripping stuff all around.
  8. War Games this was not but as a violent garbage brawl confined to a cage, this was a strong effort overall. Good to see Tanaka and some of the other workers that become my favorites in FMW hang here. The cuffing stipulation added to the drama at the end for me. ***1/2
  9. Yeah, I thought this was good and the best tv match of 1996 but I don't have it that much above the Caesars title change. I did like the psychology in this one but the Booty Man finish really takes it down in my eyes. ***
  10. Fart noises = comedy for Vince. This is really brutal stuff and worse than I remembered.
  11. Larry King doesn't get spared this time. I have completely checked out on these in every way.
  12. This looked really pedestrian from the clips. Why did Taker wait to the finish to pop up?
  13. I don't know if Shawn ever was as good a babyface as he was in this match. Great stuff from him and Owen working a match with some hatred but not in a brawling sense overall. That being said, I never felt like Owen was outmatched and it gave credibility to the overall stipulation going in that Shawn wanted to protect his Mania spot. This match is one that when I see WWF- centric fans talk about how good it was, I also kind of balked at that chalking it up to them not having watched enough, but it delivered in spades for me. ***3/4
  14. I think this may be the best studio USWA match of the 1990's. First off, seeing Baxter here and knowing what he is like in 98 and 99 was a total mind-fuck for me. This looked like a Truth Martini ripoff. The match worked well and featured solid work by the heel team and PG-13 being sympathetic in building to the finish. Tracy Smothers between 96 and 93 is getting a push of stock in my eyes. ***1/2
  15. Another surprise showing this feud can do no wrong. Kobayshi dips into the fountain of his best 80's stuff and we get a rugged rough and tumble brawl here with them going around the whole arena and showing complete disdain for each other. This feud is awesome and really brought up highlights from both groups. ***1/4
  16. You are on an island with this one Pete as I thought this was spectacular. I thought the opening matwork perfectly set the tone for the match and it played off as an even contest where neither man wanted to let them self, their promotion, and the fans down. The stuff with the missed dives and dickish touches really added a sense of intrigue as did the hot crowd with some dueling chants. The finishing promotion felt less exhibitionary to me and more about both men emptying out their arsenal to gain the victory. Between this and DWB vs. Smothers, I am loving the hidden gem feel of this disc overall. ****1/4
  17. JYD as an ace huh. I got to say that the novelty of this USA is starting to wear off with all other promotions in the US having consistently more engaging stuff for me.
  18. I can't believe people don't like this match. I am really conflicted on a star rating as I thought for what it was and what they were trying to accomplish, it was flawless. The escalation seemed there to me with the blood and dazed selling. Sure, the match was all punches but the punch attacks were so varied and crisp that I remained completely engaged. Add to that a fabulous finish with Ron Wright being healed and you have one of my favorite matches from watching all of these sets. I can't wait for the rest of this feud if this match is any indication. ****
  19. Pretty good short segment from a guy I have never enjoyed. This had a perverse slant to it that worked for me in this iteration of Sullivan's character.
  20. I liked this match a decent amount but agree with the criticisms Pete laid out. I also think if you think Jesse on commentary could do no wrong, listen to this match as he derailed it time and time again to say his unfunny jokes like Cranberry. Scorpio diving in on the arm and Austin dancing were the highlight here. I can't believe the finish was what it was. ***1/4
  21. I liked this match a lot and it really started cooking with the Steamboat FIP sequence. Steamboat overall is actually climbing in my all time rankings which sounds strange to say. He just provided so many wrinkles here that added to the overall match. Bischoff calling this match sounds insanely sterile and not good at all. Douglas and Steamer winning seems odd and I feel like we are at the point in this feud where you either have to piss or get off the pot in giving the straps to the Blonds. ***1/2
  22. Wow, this does feel like an early 1990's segment that crept into 1993 with Raw on. Can anyone pronounce Yokozuna? It is amazing that most of the other US promotions are running really hot angles right now, and WWF has been pretty brutal leading into WM 9.
  23. Yeah I wasn't as crazy about this. Maybe it was the mispronouncing but it felt like Duggan was trying to revive his glory days and being dumb and not knowing his limits at times.
  24. Corey gets called out and Miss Texas is wrestling the men. Certainly not a peak Pg-13 segment but the Clinton bit was smart.
  25. Ditto all the comments here as this was totally captivating and made USWA feel like they were about to have the biggest match in the world. Savage in his outfit and Lawler wearing his crown having a verbal debate is pro wrestling. One of my favorite USWA segments of the entire 1990's.
