[1996-02-03-NJPW-Fighting Spirit] Jushin Liger vs Black Tiger
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in February 1996
I agree this is a touring baseline match for these two but it was still damn good and had more cohesiveness than a lot of what we have seen so far this year which is a testament to Liger and Eddy. Solid but unspectacular. ***1/2- 7 replies

[1996-01-31-AAA-Sin Limite] Rey Misterio Jr vs Juventud Guerrera (Cage)
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
All spots that are fun but not a lot of substance here and this is fitting as it sums up the month as a whole again for me with the bones there of something great but everything not exactly coming together. Damian also feels below these guys so him inserting himself feels like a letdown. Cheap finish to boot. Good but not really the great match I kind of hoped for going in. ***- 8 replies

Another decentish match from these two but it does feel like we are getting diminishing returns with them constantly being involved with each other for the first month. Flair continues his rise using all the short cuts he can. **

[1996-02-03-WCW-Saturday Night] Lex Luger vs Eddy Guerrero
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in February 1996
This is jarring to see the difference of Eddy. I thought this was a lot of fun for what it lasted and really put Eddy over well. For instance, I think Luger does just as much here as HHH did vs. Taka in the 2000 Raw match that gets brought up. Surprise finish too with Eddy getting the win over Lex to Dusty's delight. **3/4- 9 replies

Of course WWE could spin things the same way but there does seem to be a lot of berating of WWE inflation compared to what happened here. I think Dylan in this reaction show points out things perfectly. Either the actual amount of ticket sells was complete bullshit ahead of time or someone should have been wise to the fact that the setup was for only 36k so it was impossible for the show to do way better than last year which is what some of the biggest voices of New Japan were claiming ahead of time.
-
I think Dave will rank the junior tag opener at **** and not the Omega match.

Kind of interested in this too. Before King of Pro Wrestling, all the talk was how everything was setting up for Okada vs. Styles, then boom Tana wins and everyone talks about how that of course was the logical booking for Okada to get his big win over the ace of the promotion. That didn't happen here. I am intrigued where stuff goes but am starting to get a little weary and think talking about how brilliant the booking is setting up one thing to happen and then that not happening seems dubious.

So, I thought this show was great but still feel somehow lower than most despite me throwing out a lot of snowflakes. Dylan doesn't like Tanahashi vs. OKada as a series but both OhtaniJacket and myself have point to matches in the series we really like. Shoe has been a proponent of New Japan last month of so. I think the problem still lies in the middle matches that some reviews just seemingly have to justify is good. I will use Voice as Wrestling as they are consistently the best source of New Japan coverage. I fail to see where Makabe vs. Ishii was **** or OMega vs. Taguchi being considered good at ***1/4. This is where my disconnect comes with New Japan to an extent, most of the great matches that are MOTYC, I agree with. It is that middle portion where other reviewers (Joe Lanza, Jason Felix, Bryan Rose) have multiple matches at **** or hovering around and I am around the *** mark. That still classifies a good match but I think giving those huge ratings to every show is extreme and generous at times.

2:00 eastern, isn't it? Show on New Japan world says 1:15 so I would assume the Rumble would start between 1:20 and 1:35 Eastern or show. The main show starts at 2:00 AM Eastern.

The WWF wont back down and is doing what the fans asked for, more skits of this shit. This makes me pine for the DX invasion days.

[1996-01-27-WCW-Saturday Night] Steven Regal vs Dusty Wolfe
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
I loved Dusty's line about Finlay beating 392 years out of him. Good debut for a character and Wolfe is still hanging on to that early 90's sleaze ball mullet. 1/2 *- 13 replies

Finish was awesome here and it feels like All Japan has been missing. I loved the Lariat after getting temporarily stunted by the boot of Kawada. May actually want to seek this one out in full sometime.

Hennan leaving was odd. I do think Giant looked pretty good here and sitting through Gigante for WTBBP has made me appreciate him more starting so fresh. Flair gets the win with a foreign object assist from Hart.. Doesn't looked like we missed much from the finish shown.

[1996-01-23-WCW-Clash of the Champions XXXII] Brian Pillman vs Eddy Guerrero
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
We get Bobby freaking out and PIllman clowning and egging him on. I actually think Pillman still had a lot to offer right here and was still moving well and being a complete "loose cannon" pardon the pun. I thought Eddy getting over was a good testament to him giving his look and placement right here. (**)- 13 replies

Warriors come back to a big pop and some boss blue shoulderpads. Sting is all for giving them a title shot but Luger reminds him that they have just came back and that they are nursing injuries. State Patrol seem more legit! I really like this Luger and Sting stuff and think it shows a good dimension to Luger's career overall.

Oh when Pulp Fiction was fresh. This one was good and I liked the JT Smith comedy bit stuck in the middle of all the Beulah, Dreamer, Pitbull stuff. I still don't really like Dreamer as a promo much at all.

[1996-01-22-AJW-Champion Legend] Manami Toyota vs Yumiko Hotta
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Agree that this match kind of sets the tone for January 1996 as a whole to me so far minus Sammy vs. Otani. Some good stuff and the pieces are there but everything doesn't completely come together. I loved this at parts but that final stretch was some of the worst Hotta tendencies and took me out of the match a good deal. Interested to see joshi in 1996. (***1/4)- 11 replies

[1996-01-22-WCW-Nitro] Sting & Lex Luger vs Harlem Heat
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Match was fine but I agree the HH control at points was bland and they never were the legendary tag team WCW promoted them to be at points. I do like the Sting/Luger relationship being developed and they win the tag straps here. (**1/2)- 11 replies

I seemed to like the match better than everyone else as I thought it was a good sprint and one of the better examples of Flair vs. Savage by the numbers. Shocking finish too with the title switch which in retrospect I probably wouldn't have done. Hogan is just so detestable at this point hogging the spotlight to ridiculous degrees. ***
